Bette Davis certainly deserved any award she ever won; however, the plot of this film certainly couldn't have been nominated for best screenplay. The story is too pat; too hackneyed, to be considered too seriously. It is only the immense talent of Davis that saves the film.
The story of a former star who has fallen on bad time and bouts of alcoholism was a theme that was repeated many times before and since this film was made. Watchable only for Davis.
