Aggressively Japanese Splaterfest
27 November 2021
I'll admit that the Squid Game hype brought me to this forgotten gem, and while there are certainly similarities, I don't think there's any cause for plagiarism claims. It goes full speed into over the top violence, but it's all being perpetrated by cutesy, cartoonish characters, so the resulting gore feels as palatable as a live action Itchy and Scratchy episode. If watching a myriad of nameless teens getting gruesomely picked off brings you any joy, this movie is as fun as they come, mixing a healthy dose of comedy into the bloodbath. Eventually, there is a redundancy to the death games, and while the film wraps up just before it becomes tiresome, I don't think there would have been much value to the sequel that is alluded to, but never ended up materializing.
