Great Performances but didn't win me over

My Review- "Save Me " Streaming on Stan)

My Rating 6.5

This 12 part Series in my view has some super performances especially from Lennie James the series Creator , Executive Producer and Star .

Lennie James is cast as "Nelly "Rowe an absent father down and out womaniser who spends the entire series on a solitary man hunt for the abductors of his daughter Jody who he gave total custody up to her mother On a tireless quest to find his missing daughter Jody, Nelly will go to any length to uncover the truth and he'll discover more about himself and those around him than he could have ever imagined.

I'll watch any series that features Suranne Jones who is also splendid as Jody's distraught Mum Claire McGory who obviously still has an emotional connection to her ex "Nelly" I have no issue with the ensemble performances in "Save Me." my problem with the series is that it's spoilt by a padded out script with far too many characters that I think confuse and detract from the story.

The one glaring fault or criticism of Lennie James screenplay is the lack of Police involvement and the fact that Nelly takes on the whole investigation and quest to find his daughter himself.

Surely if a suspected teenage girl abduction trafficking ring was involved in kidnapping and selling their prey to the highest bidder every cop and detective in London would be assigned to the case .

We see an occasional visit by a couple of Detectives but they only seem to turn up when Nelly finds a clue or a dead suspect turns up.

Some series do go on and on and are a big time investment they have to leave the viewer wanting more .

I was impressed enough to watch series 2 really only for the performances but doubt I'll watch a third series of "Save Me." as I've seen this bleak sad crime story before in Series like "Sex Traffic" 2004 and various British Crime Thrillers so this series really didn't present anything new this viewer.

Obviously many people think it's much better than I do so I'm not panning the series entirely it's just didn't impress me.

In an interview with the Radio Times published on Monday, 12th April 2021 the writer and star of the series, Lennie James, revealed that he is currently working on scripting a third series of the drama, that Sky Television have not yet commissioned a third series and that if they do commission series three it will be the final series. James also announced that due to his commitments to Feat the Walking Dead and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic the earliest release date for a possible third series would be late 2022.

I won't be waiting in anticipation.
