The first two minutes had me worried as it was the overdone death trope but once past that the first episode was surprisingly good, handling the introduction of the protagonist followed by the "training montage" fairly well.
The following episodes included entertaining Mech plus Magic in the best possible way, and surprisingly the technical breakdown during the R&D portions was entertaining as a bit of realism was introduced.
The single other detracting factor was the evil masterminds, they were a over the top and cliched.
Look forward to a 2nd season, it deserves one.
