I've read the same reviews you have. About how Argento's heart wasn't in this one. About how it's not a patch on his earlier films.
Well, I don't entirely agree. At all really. Often, but not always those are harsh comments from fans who think an artist should create art in exactly they way they're expected to.
Brody delivers a strong performance, the story is engaging and the baddy is creepily interesting.
But back to Argento... He's directed this beautifully and the camerawork is up there with the very best of his movies...
In fact, I won't go on further other than to say that I feel this one sits about a 3rd of the way down a list of his films. Just watch it and decide for yourself. Personally, I think you're in for a treat, especially if you've read about how mediocre it is.
