Matt Groening's medieval fantasy

Warning: Spoilers
This animated series is set in the Kingdom of Dreamworld. Here nineteen year old protagonist Princess Tiabeanie, Bean to her friends, would rather spend time getting drunk down the pub than being regal in the palace... she certainly doesn't want to get married as her father intends. She has two friends; Luci, her personal demon who always tries to help her make the wrong choice; and Elfo, an elf who left Elfwood to discover misery! As the series progresses Bean and her friends will get into a number of scrapes; learn how her mother came to be turned to stone and be accused of attempted murder.

Having enjoyed 'The Simpsons' and been a real fan of 'Futurama' so I was a little disappointed that Matt Groening's latest project would be on Netflix as I didn't have access to it... as soon as I did it was the first show I started watching. I really enjoyed it. It is unfair to compare it to his previous works as, apart from the art style, it is quite different. It takes advantage of the fact that viewers don't have to wait a week before the next episode to give ongoing plot lines as well as some standalone stories. There are a few cliff-hanger endings to encourage the viewer to watch the next episode straight away. There are less obvious gags than I expected but this is balanced by drama and stronger storylines. I liked the three protagonists and the secondary characters where fun too. It is clearly aimed at a slightly older audience with Bean's drinking, quite a few deaths of minor characters and some drug references; not to mention some darkish plots. The animation is solid and the backgrounds look great. Overall I really enjoyed this and look forward to its return.
