Basically (2014)

Brosnahan turns it into something nice

Warning: Spoilers
This is "Basically", an American English-language live action short film from 2014, so this one has its 5th anniversary this year. It is one of actually many short filmy by writer and director Ari Aster before he has his big breakthrough with Hereditary recently. Now for this one here he got Rachel Brosnahan to play the main part and she was also not yet at the peak of her popularity and success she achieved as Mrs. Maisel. At least as many probably know her from House of Cards. But back to this one here. She plays a young woman (while being 23 or 24 only herself actually) who talks to the camera, i.e. to the audience, and speaks to us about everything that is/was going on her life. Sex, friends, job activities, parents, out-of-body experiences and dwarves and a lot more really. I mean she is constantly talking for almost 15 minutes, so there has to be a lot in here also quantity-wise. But also quality-wise. Early on it feels a bit like rambling which fits because her character is as smart as she is shallow it seems. But maybe it is not true because the film moves on to more essential monologues and questions eventually. And if you are not really in the mood for this almost philosophical stuff, you can still enjoy the one shot (as a straight male) that has a guy with his tongue in her private parts. Anyway lets not get too obscene now to not cause harm to the imdb censorship people. Overall, this film needed a little while to really get me interested, but the longer it went the more I appreciated the different locations, outfits and haircuts on Brosnahan and of course also what she had to say. She clearly carries this film nicely and it is a good combination between her acting (her talent is so visible) and Aster's writing which is far more memorable here than his directing. I enjoyed the watch, but maybe I am biased too because I like the actress. Still overall, without a doubt, this is a thumbs-up for me. Go check it out. It is pretty easy to find.
