Crown Court (1972–2007)

Before 'Rumpole', there was 'Crown Court'

Warning: Spoilers
Long before reality dross of the 'Judge Judy' variety slimed its way onto the screens, the stuff to watch back in the day was 'Crown Court'. Running for twelve years on ITV and starring only the very best of British acting talent, 'Crown Court' would see a case take place over three episodes a time. The jury ( which was made up of real members of the public ) would be intstructed to give a verdict based on the evidence given.

In the final part of the episode before the verdict was given, the screen would fade to black to which point a caption reading 'And The Verdict Is...'

It has been a good number of years since I have seen 'Crown Court' but from what I can recollect, it was interesting stuff. Never once did the show leave the courtroom ( excepting waiting areas and the like ). Taking part in the show over the years were Maureen Lipman, Mark McManus, Michael Elphick, Miriam Karlin, Bernard Hill, Patricia Routledge, Gregor Fisher and Brenda Fricker.

'Crown Court' is occasionally re-ran on satellite channel Legal TV and is now available on DVD. Forget 'Judge Judy' or 'Jeremy Kyle' or even farcical nonsense such as 'Rumpole Of The Bailey', this is the real thing.
