Review of Maroni

Maroni (2018– )
2/10
Just - well - boring

Warning: Spoilers
This review is pretty much all spoilers. I started watching this in dubbed German ("Die Geister des Flusses"), and completed episode 1 of 4. Tonight I decided, despite being disappointed by episode 1, to try to keep watching. I'm 9 minutes into episode 2, and just can't keep going. So, I like police procedurals (e.g. Wallander), dark atmospherics (e.g. Ripper Street), and cool film locations (e.g. Australia's "Wanted"). I was hoping 'fantomes" would be interesting because it takes place in French Guiana (which for me is "exotic"), and has a voodoo theme. Sadly, I found the characters lacked any depth, they also lack a backstory. "Chloé" looks to be in her teens, I think the casting company could have chosen a female lead who was more convincing. Chloé seems very cranky, and there's not explanation as to why (except maybe that she was transferred to Guiana?). The first episode also had a lot of filler: looking at files/photos, walking around the apartment, a completely out of the blue and useless bar/sex scene, door slamming, and well - a lot of pouty face from "Chloé". The Guinean policeman, Dialo, doesn't say very much and unfortunately his role is completely overshadowed by Chloé's presence. As it is, both characters are underwhelming. It's one of those things where I really wanted to like this because the premise and location sounded really intriguing, but I just can't continue. It looks like a lot of people did enjoy this series, and maybe you will too. 2 stars for the beautiful jungle scenery.
