Far North (2007)

In the far north, Saiva (Michelle Yeoh) is known to be cursed. Her family is massacred by Soviet troops. She's raped but she gets her revenge. She and her daughter Anja (Michelle Krusiec) struggle to survive. She encounters dying Loki (Sean Bean) in the wilderness and brings him back to life.

I would probably start with the origin story although killing the dog is a good visual gut punch. This has a compelling cold hard story of survival. It's an intriguing small indie. When the twist happens, I could only say "What?". I thought I missed something in the movie. The fear of being alone could be powerful but that's an odd way of dealing with it. It turns into magic realism and I'm not sure this is good. I'm not willing to say that it's a bad move either.
