Sexism, Celtic Goddesses, and a Bunch of Laughs
27 July 2017
Angel is a successful advertising director; he is also a sexist pig who doesn't even pretend to resist cheating on his wife with every young woman he sees. But there are a group of women, witches perhaps, who have powers to change that - after they kill him. Now Angel is dead, but still forced to live out his life as if he's not (only his young daughter sees that there's something very wrong with Daddy), except when the witches put him in a trance and summon him, zombie-like, to do their bidding, all in an effort to bring back some ancient Celtic Goddesses who will right the wrongs done to women over the centuries…. This was at times quite funny, as the super-macho Angel is so over-the-top that one can't help but laugh, although the film was marred by the fact that the subtitles were out of sync, so that one couldn't always be sure who was saying what. There's a bunch of gore in it too, which might put some people off, but overall it sends up the world of misogyny in a mostly light- hearted way. I did notice that when audience members laughed, it was almost always *female* audience members, though!
