Saving Face (2004)
Very well told story with a lesbian theme.

Silly me. The DVD box lists Joan Chen's name first and I went through the whole movie thinking "Wil" was played by Joan Chen. I guess I should check out the actors first next time!

Good movie. Michelle Krusiec is actually the lead character Wil (Wilhelmena) who is a 29-year-old doctor in a NY hospital. (Krusiec is full Chinese, she was adopted by her aunt whose married name is Kruisiec.) She has accepted her gayness for some years but it remained dormant until her boss' daughter Vivian (Lynn Chen, married to a man in real life) shows up. It turns out that they had met before, 10 years earlier, and Vivian has had a crush on Wil ever since.

Joan Chen is Ma, single, but who turns up pregnant. Word spreads quickly from the clinic! She will not tell who the father is, her own father is outraged, Ma has disgraced him and his good name, she is exiled to daughter Wil's apartment. Wil does what I suppose any good Chinese daughter would do in this situation -- she arranges dates in the hope of finding a suitable husband for Ma before the baby is born.

So, the whole movie is an examination of Chinese family culture and traditions. In the process we see Wil and Vivian try to work out their relationship, which gets a bit more difficult when Vivian gets her big break offered a job as a dancer with a ballet in Paris. And we see Ma going through a bunch of suitors until the surprise father is finally revealed.
