Review of Pinocchio

Pinocchio (2002)
7/10
Flawed but charming
14 October 2005
The Italian cinephiles were relieved when they heard Roberto Benigni was going to make a new version of Pinocchio, more faithful to the source novel, yet after the movie was released most people hated it. I have to say I actually enjoyed it:from a visual point of view it's awesome, which is good news since big-budget SFX-laden movies are EXTREMELY rare in Italy(and the rest of Europe).I was slightly disappointed by the fact that some parts of the book had been left out, and I have to admit Benigni's portrayal of Pinocchio could have been better. However, his love for the material is obvious and he gets extraordinary performances from I Fichi d'India and most of all Kim Rossi Stuart, who's the best thing in the movie.

If you're expecting something as good as La Vita è Bella, don't waste your time, but if you're willing to give this film a chance, you may not regret it.
