Review of Compulsion

Compulsion (1959)
a great courtroom thriller
8 October 2001
I have always been fascinated by the Leopold Loeb murder case. When those two kids went on that killing spree at Columbine, people compared them to Leopold and Loeb. These two rich brats killed an innocent little boy just for the thrill of it and it was probably the most shocking crime in America at that time. This riveting classic is the best one of the best movies about a real life crime that I have ever seen. It was probably considered shocking and controversial at the time. It has been pointed out that Orson Welles speech at end was the longest monologue in film history. Some have said that it bogged the film down but I thought that Welles was magnificent! This man was truly a genius who never got credit when he was alive. Most people today just remember him for his Paul Mason wine commercials, his "War Of The Worlds" broadcast, or Citizen Kane, he should also be remembered for his great performance in this film. I personally think Leopold and Loeb were a couple slimy rotton killers who should have been executed, but that does not take away the fact the Darrow's summation at their trial is one of the most eloquent in an American courtroom.
