"I'm from a different space and time." Vertical has debuted an official trailer for an indie sci-fi thriller film titled Parallel, yet another multiverse / parallel universe concept coming to the big screen. They also mash up this concept with a plot about grief, another movie trend these days. It's set to open later in February in select theaters and on VOD to watch. The film follows the journey of Vanessa, a grief-stricken woman who mysteriously finds herself navigating between parallel spaces. This is actually a remake of the 2019 Chinese film Parallel Forest, about a woman who takes refuge at her family's lake house to grieve after suffering the loss of her child. She must reckon with the multiverse concept as a way to overcome her grief. It's the first feature from the Hodge Brothers Productions company. Parallel stars brothers Edwin Hodge and Aldis Hodge, along with the vey talented Danielle Deadwyler as Vanessa.

Danielle Deadwyler, who many Oscar-watchers felt was a strong contender for a Best Actress nomination this year for her role as the grieving mother Mamie Till-Mobley in “Till,” spoke about her snub on the British podcast “Kermode and Mayo’s Take” on Thursday. When asked to respond to “Till” director Chinonye Chukwu’s assertion that the lack of a nomination reflected “unabashed misogyny towards Black women,” Deadwyler said she agreed.
The actress cited the “lingering effect” of prejudice in “the spaces and the institutions.” She noted that back when Hattie McDaniel won the Oscar for “Gone With The Wind” in 1940, she was not permitted to sit with other white guests.
“We’re talking about people who perhaps chose not to see the film,” she said of the current academy, adding, “We’re talking about misogynoir. It comes in all kinds of ways. Whether it’s direct or indirect, it impacts who we are.

Hot off of Butler’s turn as the King of Rock ‘n Roll for Baz Luhrmann’s mind-bending biopic “Elvis,” Jacob Elordi will play the “Jailhouse Rock” crooner for A24 drama “Priscilla.”
Based on Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir “Elvis and Me,” the film will be directed by Sofia Coppola and star “Mare of Easttown” breakout Cailee Spaeny as the ex-wife of Elvis. Coppola also adapted Priscilla’s New York Times bestselling memoir for the big screen.
Per a Deadline source, Spaeny was Coppola’s first choice to portray Priscilla, while “Euphoria” star Elordi auditioned for the role of Elvis. The film marks Oscar winner Coppola’s first feature since “On the Rocks” starring Rashida Jones and longtime collaborator Bill Murray. Seattle-based MindRiot Entertainment is teaming up with Panama’s Hypatia Films, an associate producer of Claire Denis’ Cannes Grand Prix winner “Stars at Noon,” on the groundbreaking documentary, “In Search of Atlantis,” based on the findings of Seattle native Dr. Jason Rubin who has used deductive reasoning, the writings of philosopher Plato and the most advanced satellite sonar imagery to pinpoint the location of the fabled lost island of Atlantis.
According to MindRiot co-founder and chief creative officer Jonathan Keasey, Dr. Rubin passed on other Hollywood suitors as he liked MindRiot’s approach to the content and the fact that it had marshalled the support of multiple universities, including deep sea explorer Don Walsh, the honorary president of the Explorers Club, and even European authorities, given the maritime jurisdiction of Rubin’s site in the Atlantic Ocean.
Denis is among the constellation of world talent descending on the 70th San Sebastian Film Festival.

Penelope Cruz just earned her fourth Oscar nomination for her nuanced performance in “Parallel Mothers,” the latest film from her frequent collaborator, Pedro Almodovar. The actress plays Janis, a photographer who comes to realize her baby was switched at birth.
Cruz recently spoke with Gold Derby senior editor Denton Davidson about her working relationship with Almodovar, how her maternal instincts lend themselves to so many of his films and her memories of winning an Oscar for “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” in 2009. They remain nowhere near as well-represented as their male counterparts in the editing Oscar realm — the best-known is Thelma Schoonmaker with eight Oscar nominations and three wins — but women such as Úna Ní Dhonghaíle (“Belfast”), Pamela Martin (“King Richard”) and Teresa Font (“Parallel Mothers”) are seeking to make their mark in the race.
Dhonghaíle was almost finished cutting “Death on the Nile” with Kenneth Branagh when he mentioned “Belfast” to her. “Kenneth shot in a very painterly style. A lot of the scenes were held and had a depth of field,” Dhonghaíle says. “The mise-en-scene was just as important as the rhythm of the film.”

In Variety‘s Up Next, we asked four Oscar winners to pick the one person who represents the future of Hollywood.
Pedro Almodóvar describes his scripts as making a dish. “They need a lot of cooking time in the oven,” he says. Applying that logic to “Parallel Mothers,” it took about 10 to 12 years. Almodóvar has been writing since he was a child, but his initial goal was to be a novelist. But life had different plans — in the form of 23 scripts (so far) and an Oscar for original screenplay for “Talk to Her” (2002).
Almodóvar is in love with many in film today, but he absolutely gushes over Julia Ducournau, who penned “Titane,” which will be representing France for the international feature Oscar. He calls her movie “amazingly brilliant and completely schizophrenic. She has great promise, and I will continue to follow her.” Ducournau has revered Almodóvar’s work her entire life.

T. S. Eliot gave it a cryptic name in The Waste Land: “The Burial of the Dead.” Pedro Almodóvar has instructed his glamorous cast in Parallel Mothers to carry out just this, again and again with soil-mucked hands, in hypnotic and sometimes circuitous rhythm. Often a savvy master of charged symbols and double entendres, he would know that “dead” can be a metaphor and burials are seldom final. The intertwining thematic strands of motherhood and exhumed Spanish history battle for supremacy, maybe in an unnecessary fight to the death.
To bring to bear another familiar analogy often used in film criticism, Parallel Mothers is a film of promising ingredients sadly undercooked. It has that slightly stilted, over-heightened quality that characterizes Almodóvar’s weaker pictures, and, with a sting of disappointment, one can sense it from the opening ten minutes. There are tonal issues, awkwardly on-the-nose dialogue and plotting; the acting...

Almodóvar is back again! An early teaser trailer has debuted for the latest Pedro Almodóvar film, this one titled Parallel Mothers, originally known as Madres Paralelas. It was just announced as a Venice Film Festival premiering in a few months, and will open in the US later this year from Sony Pictures Classics. The film is another drama that centers on two mothers, portrayed by Penélope Cruz and Milena Smit, who both give birth on the same day. "With Madres Paralelas I return to the female universe, to motherhood, to the family," Almodóvar said earlier this year. "I speak of the importance of ancestors and descendants. The inevitable presence of memory. There are many mothers in my filmography, the ones that are part of this story are very different." The film's cast also includes Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, Israel Elejalde, Julieta Serrano, and Rossy de Palma. This teaser is dialogue free so...

“That lady is wearing a wig!” is the first thought that comes to me at the start of Parallel… Shortly thereafter, the film throws up an interesting conceit and, aside from the wig, this film is extremely professionally made. It is a sci-fi mind bender with similar ambition to Looper.
A group of friends have created a parking app, and they are trying to seal the big deal, but it all goes wrong, and they lose out. The banter among the gang is believable and funny. The characters are likable and believable as people. There is a bouncy, fun, Ocean’s 11 vibe to a lot of the gang’s hijinks.

Netflix is co-producing with Alazraki, who produced and directed the original, and Chris Columbus, Michael Barnathan and Mark Radcliffe from 26th Street Pictures, with whom the streamer has a larger overall deal, which also includes an untitled Chupacabra film with Jonas Cuarón, son and frequent collaborator of Alfonso Cuarón. It’s been years since we last heard about the sequel to the best time-travel film of the past decade, “Source Code,” but writer Ben Ripley isn’t ready to move away from mind-bending sci-fi just yet. Netflix is reportedly teaming up with Ripley for a new film titled “Parallel” about — you guessed it — parallel universes.

Friday is here, and that can only mean one thing. The weekly barrage of new releases on VOD have arrived to tempt viewers to part with their hard-earned cash, and there are some real big hitters on offer. To sum up how badly the ongoing effects of the Coronavirus pandemic have affected the theatrical industry, The Croods: A New Age is now available to rent or buy, despite the animated sequel having topped the domestic box office for the last three weekends, and it’s still the number one movie in America as we speak.
This week’s marquee release, however, is undoubtedly Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, which was once being touted as the summer blockbuster capable of single-handedly reviving the cinematic experience from the worst year in recent history. Obviously that wasn’t the case, and the $200 million action thriller is now looking to pull in some big numbers...

Parallel is a new sci-fi from Mexican filmmaker Isaac Ezban, and features Swedish actor Martin Wallström in the leading role, and to we had the pleasure of speaking to the actor to mark the film’s release. Wallström talks to us on Zoom about the project and what lured him in, and compares himself to his character and how vital it is that he is able to understand the motives (some of which are questionable to say the least). We also ask him about his time spent on Mr. Robot alongside Academy Award winner Rami Malek, and ow sad he was for that experience to end – though he admits it was the right time. We also chat about Stellan Skarsgard, who he loves, and we love, and basically this turns into a Stellan love-in. Enjoy!

"This is the biggest unfair advantage in human history." Vertical Ent. has released an official trailer for a sci-fi thriller titled Parallel, from filmmaker Isaac Ezban. This originally premiered in 2018 at all the fall genre fests: FrightFest, Morbido, Sitges, Utopia, and a few others including Fantasia in Montreal. A group of friends stumble upon a mirror that serves as a portal to a "multiverse", but soon discover that importing knowledge from the other side in order to better their lives brings increasingly dangerous consequences. Whod've thought?! The film stars Aml Ameen, Martin Wallström, Georgia King, Mark O’Brien, Alyssa Diaz, with David Harewood and Kathleen Quinlan. I dig the setup and the intro to the parallel universe, but I'm worried it will get really cheesy when bad things start happening. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Isaac Ezban's Parallel, direct from Vertical's YouTube: A group of friends stumble upon...

The movie will release in theaters and on demand on Dec. 11.
“Parallel” follows four friends who find a mirror that serves as a portal to a “multiverse.” But they quickly find out that getting information from the other side to better their lives can have lethal consequences. The cast includes Martin Wallström (“Mr. Robot”), Aml Ameen (“I May Destroy You”), Georgia King (“Devs”) and Mark O’Brien (“Ready or Not”).
The movie marks the English-language feature debut for Ezaban, a Mexican director known for “The Incident” and “The Similars.”

A few weeks before TIFF 2020, actor-turned-helmer Michelle Latimer is missing the cooler climes of Thunder Bay, on Lake Superior, where she grew up.
But the hottest ticket in Toronto can’t skip town before her rare premiere double-header.
In 2008, Latimer, who is of Algonquin, Metis and French heritage, left a busy acting career and has (mostly) worked behind the camera directing docs and series, notably, Viceland’s eight-parter “Rise,” about Indigenous-led resistance movements, which included an extended episode about the Standing Rock occupation protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline. In January 2020, Latimer was the inaugural artist-in-residence at the Sundance Institute Screenwriting Labs. She’s currently developing a dramatic feature based on the true story of Canada’s only female dangerous offender, in collaboration with Sienna Films.
This week, Latimer is one of a handful of directors attending their physically distanced in-cinema premieres. Hers include feature doc “Inconvenient Indian” (National Film Board...

Mexican filmmaker Isaac Ezban definitely has a type. After impressing festival audiences with his debut feature The Incident, a film about people stuck in an eternal moment, and The Similars, in which identities being to shift when a group of strangers find themselves stuck waiting at a bus stop, it's pretty clear where his interests lay. Ezban's fascination with the ramifications of identity, decision making, and the possibilities of an endless universe makes another, perhaps more coherent appearance in his newest film, Parallel. Ezban's first English language feature, Parallel is the story of four friends who stumble upon a passage to infinite dimensions in their attic, and how they utilize this new, unnatural power. The short take? Not well. More an exploration of the ethics...

Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk is a bombastic force of cinematic warfare. See it in IMAX 70mm if you can. There’s nothing pretentious about watching a movie as the director intended, 75% of which was shot on IMAX film. Sprawling coastal shots are nothing but landscape porn given Nolan’s theatrical eye, and those top-down shots from cockpit perspectives? Worth the IMAX price hike alone (and this is coming from one stingy theatergoer).
Yet, this isn’t an “action-first” campaign by any stretch. Soldiers don’t hunker down and exchange fire. We’re taken back to a period in British history where 400,000 men found themselves stranded, with home a relative stone’s throw away. Winning meant surviving, and the only mission was to escape. Scared, shivering men sat on a beach waiting, while enemy aircrafts rained ammunition at will. Sound too simple to be a Nolan piece? Don’t worry, the...
