Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez” swept France’s 30th Lumiere Awards, the local equivalent to the Golden Globes, at a ceremony held on Monday in Paris at the Forum des Images auditorium.
“Emilia Pérez” dominated the show, winning a whopping five awards: best film, director, script, actress for Karla Sofía Gascón, and music for Camille and Clement Ducol. The awards were voted on by France-based journalists from 38 countries.

In his feature debut, Belgian filmmaker Michiel Blanchart takes a simple and familiar action film set-up and gives it his own spin by adding pertinent social commentary. In “Night Call,” Mady (Jonathan Feltre), a young locksmith, has quite the violent and eventful evening in Brussels. He tangles with nefarious characters, makes affecting friendships and runs against the clock to save himself. Blanchart proves himself adept at giving all his ensemble various shading, shifting the audience’s allegiances and making his film much more than the usual brutal actioner.
Mady is called upon by Claire (Natacha Krief), a mysterious but affable woman, to open her apartment after losing her keys. After she flirts with him, he allows her to trick him and runs away stealing a big plastic bag. Suddenly he’s alone in a stranger’s apartment looking like a burglar. The bag has lots of money in it, the...

He’s helmed such diverse features as 1994’s thriller See How They Fall, 2009’s Academy Award-nominated gangster film A Prophet, 2012’s devastating romance Rust and Bone, and 2015’s Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or-winning portrait of refugees escaping war, Dheepan. His work is united by the fierce pursuit of his singular visions. For his latest project, Emilia Pérez, Audiard set out to combine elements of musicals, film noir, and crime dramas, and he recruited a troupe of gifted performers and artisans all committed to realizing his ambitious tale of a woman on a quest to live as her truest self. At the Golden Globes on Sunday, Emilia Pérez walked away with one of the biggest prizes of the night: Best Picture, Musical or Comedy. But as Karla Sofía Gascón took the stage for a speech about self-actualization, the internet flamed the Netflix movie for what many called an inauthentic portrayal of Mexican culture and trans experience.
“When Mexicans tell you that a movie… is portraying a Mexico full of stereotypes, ignorance, lack of respect and is profiting from one of the most serious humanitarian crises in the world,” wrote Mexican...

Netflix’s Emilia Pérez could be about to sweep awards season. The main trio of actresses that drive the story are nominated in the early rounds of red carpets and awards ceremonies, namely the Golden Globes — with ten noms — as well as the BAFTAs — where it leads the longlist with Conclave.
After entering the conversation in May 2024, the Spanish musical crime comedy arrived on Netflix last November. For all the details about the work that stars Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldaña and more, read below:
What is Emilia Pérez about?
The story follows Saldaña’s Rita, a lawyer who is overqualified but also overlooked at her large law firm, which aims more just to get criminals out of trouble than to actually serve them justice. Rita gets an unexpected opportunity to exit this situation when Manitas (Karla Sofía Gascón), the leader of a notorious cartel, hires her to help him withdraw...

Jacques Audiard has always been unpredictable. Throughout his 30-plus year career, the Palme d’Or-winning French filmmaker has delivered the gritty prison drama “A Prophet,” chronicled destructive passion in “Rust and Bone,” told a tale of Tamil Sri Lankan refugees in “Dheepan” and explored Westerns with his English-language debut, “The Sisters Brothers.”
His latest effort is “Emilia Pérez,” a Spanish-language, Mexico-set crime musical starring Karla Sofía Gascón as notorious cartel leader Manitas del Monte, who fakes her own death to live authentically as a trans woman. In a story about transformation, the engineers of change can be many. Take “Emilia Pérez,” the award-winning musical film about a Mexican drug lord, Juan “Manitas” Del Monte, who hires a lawyer to help facilitate not just a disappearance but also gender-affirming surgery that will transform the brutish cartel leader into an elegant socialite, Emilia Pérez.
The transformation from Manitas to Emilia is the dramatic center of the film and the product of a collaboration that included Boris Razon, writer of the 2018 novel “Écoute,” on which the film is loosely based; screenwriter and director Jacques Audiard; actress Karla Sofía Gascón; and the below-the-line talent responsible for the look of both Manitas and Emilia, particularly costume designer Virginie Montel and makeup department head Julia Floch-Carbonel.
Karla Sofía Gascón (Martha Galvan for TheWrap)
“They allowed me to go deeper into the character and make it feel real,” Gascón said of Montel and Floch-Carbonel.

How does such a genre-defying film like Jacques Audiard’s transgender Mexican cartel musical Emilia Pérez come into being? In this case, it went through a uniquely adventurous development process.
The acclaimed Netflix film, which was loosely inspired by a chapter in Boris Razon’s 2018 novel Écoute, originally began as two distinct projects, both written by Audiard and titled Emilia Pérez: an opera libretto to be performed for the stage and a gritty crime movie the director envisioned shooting on location in Mexico.
“It took a lot of time for the two projects to merge into one, to make Emilia Pérez,” says Paul Guilhaume, the French cinematographer who shot Emilia Pérez and is considered an Oscar frontrunner for his work on the film. “I didn’t even know myself which one I would be shooting — both, or was it one or the other?” Guilhaume recalls of the early days...

French filmmaker Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez sizzles with energy, acing its tempo by rapidly pushing one scene after the other with a weaving of strategic ellipses. Audiard maintains the film’s accelerated pace with a steady hand, anchoring it as a musical crime melodrama like a bouncy symphony. The scenes are placed like a staccato, contributing to a mosaic that’s playful yet strikingly coherent. The plot of the film is emotionally charged, and the storyline moves with electrifying motions and creatively utilizes the brilliant use of cinematic language through which the filmmaker brings them to life. His approach allows us to focus closely on the characters’ words, their moments of hushed intimacy, and the smallest of gestures or expressions, all delivered in a pulsating style. The mastery shines through in his ability to draw empathy for morally ambiguous characters, making the audience feel invested in their fates. The film’s ambition,...

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week: several music videos by Jacques Audiard. Jacques Audiard's newest film, Emilia Pérez will be released this week in cinemas and soon on Netflix. A darling at the Cannes Film Festival, and a probable oscar-contender, the film might seem like an odd fit for Audiard, since it's a full blown musical. But while Audiard is mostly known for his gritty humanist dramas, like Dheepan, Un Prophéte (A Prophet), De Rouille et d'Os (Rust and Bone) and De Battre Mon Coeur s'Est Arrêté (The Beat That My Heart Skipped), there has been a droll sense of humor to his films before (The Sisters Brothers), some magical realist touches...

Here is an unusual film from a restless mind. French filmmaker Jacques Audiard’s eclectic career has already seen a gritty prison drama (A Prophet), a comedy Western (The Sisters Brothers) and a romantic drama about orcas (Rust And Bone). His latest, Emilia Pérez, is part drug-cartel gangland thriller, part trans coming-of-age drama, part grand melodrama, and part opera libretto musical. It’s nothing if not unique.
Zoe Saldaña stars as an exhausted, hard-working lawyer in Mexico City, too busy to have a life of her own. Then one day she is kidnapped on the streets by machine-gun-wielding gangsters and bustled into a van. But the kidnapping is not a death sentence or a hostage situation: instead, it’s an unlikely (and compulsory) job offer. Zoe Saldaña has the incredible fortune to be involved in some of the biggest franchises in movies. She broke through in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot series, then joined the massive production of James Cameron’s Avatar and became part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in James Gunn’s off-beat space adventure films, the Guardians of the Galaxy, which crossed over with the Avengers movies. Saldaña would also get to dabble in some smaller, dramatic films in between the big studio films. This November, she can be seen in the Netflix trip, Emilia Pérez.

The EnergaCamerimage International Film Festival has unveiled the first batch of movies selected for its 2024 main competition — a trio of aesthetically adventurous stories about women.

Camerimage organizers will unveil the rest of this year’s competition selection — which usually totals around a dozen movies — in the days ahead.
As previously announced, this year’s Camerimage competition will be assessed by a panel led by jury president and two-time Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett.

With the official trailer for Emilia Pérez dropping today, I'm still not entirely sure what the film is about, or how all these women fit together. I do know what French auteur Jacques Audiard is capable of, with films as diverse as The Beat My Heart Skipped, Rust and Bone, A Prophet, and The Sisters Brothers under his belt. I know that its amazing cast of women - Karla Sofía Gascón, Zoe Saldaña, and Selena Gomez - won a rare collectice acting award at Cannes Film Festival. I know it's a musical and there are drug cartels and a transwoman finally realizing her transition and a lot of fabulous hair and costumes and some serious violence. It's definitely an unusual combination of factors, and we...

"To listen is to accept." Netflix has revealed the main official trailer for the big 2024 film Emilia Pérez, a musical about a Mexican cartel leader becoming a woman. It's the latest film from award-winning French filmmaker Jacques Audiard, and it premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year where it won Jury Prize & Best Actress prizes. We already posted the French trailer a few months ago and the US teaser as well. Talented lawyer Rita receives an unexpected offer... She has to help a feared cartel boss retire from his business and disappear forever by becoming the woman he's always dreamed of being. It's set mostly in Mexico City, following the story of Rita and Manitas – and what happens after he switches to a she. The film stars Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz, Edgar Ramírez, Mark Ivanir. I am a big fan of this film!

“Emilia Pérez” is almost here.
There were few films out of this year’s Cannes Film Festival that generated as much buzz (and sparked as much discussion) as Jacques Audiard’s musical drama. The film ultimately won the Jury Prize, with its female ensemble collectively awarded the Best Actress prize. And now, as the film approaches its Netflix premiere on Nov. 13, you can watch the brand-new trailer below.
The film, which is France’s entry for the Best International Feature Film Oscar, is described officially as “an audacious fever dream that defies genres and expectations” (you definitely get that from the trailer). In the movie a “fearsome cartel leader Emilia (K Gascón) enlists Rita (Saldaña), an unappreciated lawyer stuck in a dead-end job, to help fake her death so that Emilia can finally live authentically as her true self.” In addition to the aforementioned performers, the movie also stars Adriana Paz and Edgar Ramírez.

“Emilia Perez” will screen at the New York Film Festival on Monday night, ending a whirlwind festival run that started way back in the spring when the ambitious project premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. To unofficially celebrate the milestone, Netflix debuted the full final trailer for the Jacques Audiard film, one that most awards experts expect to receive several top nominations, including Best Picture.
Here’s the Netflix boilerplate for the genre-blending musical crime drama: “From renegade auteur Jacques Audiard comes ‘Emilia Pérez,’ an audacious fever dream that defies genres and expectations. Through liberating song and dance and bold visuals, this odyssey follows the journey of four remarkable women in Mexico, each pursuing their own happiness. “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” is one of the most highly anticipated upcoming Dcu projects, based on the comic series by Tom King. The limited run, which spanned from 2021 to 2022, reimagined Supergirl in a darker and more complex light than usual.
Unlike her cousin Superman, Supergirl was stranded on a fragment of Krypton during its destruction, growing up in a harsh and isolated environment, grappling with deep mental trauma after witnessing the death of everyone she loved.
Supergirl casting was announced several months ago, with House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock set to portray Kara Zor-El, and now the film reportedly has its villain. According to Deadline, Matthias Schoenaerts will play Krem of the Yellow Hill, the primary antagonist from the limited comic series on which the movie is based.

‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ is easily one of the most exciting upcoming Dcu projects. The movie will be based on a comic by Tom King. The limited series ran from 2021 to 2022 and painted Supergirl in a much darker light than we’re used to seeing her in.
During the destruction of her home planet Krypton, Supergirl was stuck on a piece of the planet that drifted away. She grew up in a harsh environment with a lot of mental trauma to unpack, considering that she has seen everyone she loves die.

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Belgian actor Matthias Schoenaerts (The Old Guard) will play the lead villain in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow opposite Milly Alcock.
Schoenaerts is taking on the role of Krem of the Yellow Hills. The big bad in Tom King and Billquis Evely's Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book, Krem kills the father of a young alien girl who then enlists the Maiden of Might on her revenge mission.
The trade reiterates that shooting will begin in the UK next January and this casting is another indication that the upcoming movie will still closely to the comic book it shares a name with.
Schoenaerts most recently starred alongside Kate Winslet in HBO's The Regime. He's also known for appearing in Rust and Bone and Red Sparrow, but Krem will be his most high-profile role to date.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No! And it ain't Superman, either. It's actually the latest casting announcement for Craig Gillespie's hotly anticipated new Supergirl movie. After having learned back in January that House Of The Dragon breakout star Milly Alcock is set to play DC's Maiden of Might in James Gunn's new-look DC Universe, and then getting word in April that none other than Cruella helmsman Craig Gillespie is being eyed to direct the project, now we know who Kara Zor-El will be facing in the new movie. As Deadline are reporting, Rust And Bone actor Matthias Schoenaerts has landed the lead villain role opposite Alcock's Supergirl.
There's no official confirmation as of yet which villain from DC's rogues' gallery Schoenaerts — who you may best recognise from his turns in the likes of Netflix's The Old Guard and Jennifer Lawrence spy thriller Red Sparrow — is set to play.

Warner Brothers and DC have cast acclaimed Belgian actor Matthias Schoenaerts in the role of Krem, the main villain in their upcoming Supergirl movie “Woman of Tomorrow.” Schoenaerts, known for intense roles in films like “Rust and Bone” and “The Old Guard,” will play the comic book character who triggers Kara Zor-El’s journey to become Supergirl.
According to sources close to the production, the film will be based on Tom King’s comic run of the same name. It will tell the story of Kara after the destruction of her home planet Krypton. In the movie, Krem is said to murder the father of a young alien girl. This prompts Supergirl to get involved in her first heroic conflict.
Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, “Woman of Tomorrow” aims to provide a grittier portrayal of Supergirl than past adaptations. The movie will show the differences between Kara and Superman’s origins.

Belgian actor Matthias Schoenaerts has nabbed the plum villain role in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which Craig Gillespie is directing for DC Studios.
House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock is toplining the superhero feature as Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Superman.
The feature is inspired by the Tom King and Bilquis Evely comic and will depart from the earnest take on the character audiences may know from the CW Supergirl series. The story hews closer to a grand science-fiction adventure than standard superhero fare as the comic told of a young alien girl who seeks Supergirl’s help in exacting revenge for the killing of her family.
The villain in the comic was Krem of the Yellow Hills, the man who kills the girl’s father. Supergirl is drawn into the conflict when he injured everyone’s favorite superpet, Krypto.

Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez and Adriana Paz star alongside Spanish trans actress Karla Sofia Gascón in the genre-jumping feature about a Mexican drug lord (Gascón) who enlists the help of a lawyer (Saldaña) to undergo gender-affirming surgery.
Emilia Pérez premiered in Cannes, where it won the Jury Prize as well as a joint best actress honor for the ensemble cast.
Audiard is already an Oscar nominee for A Prophet in 2009. His filmography includes such features as Rust and Bone (2012), The Sisters Brothers (2018) and Dheepan (2015).

Cotillard joins returning cast members Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston, Billy Crudup, Mark Duplass, Nestor Carbonell, Karen Pittman, Greta Lee, Jon Hamm and Nicole Beharie.
Season 4 will pick up in the aftermath of the Season 3 finale, which saw Alex (Aniston) attempt to halt the acquisition — and impending dissolution — of Uba by suggesting a merger between Uba and Nbn.
Cotillard is best known for starring in “Allied,” “Inception,” “La Vie en Rose,” “Rust and Bone,” “Two Days, One Night,” “The Dark Knight Rises” and “Assassin’s Creed.” She also recently starred in an episode of the Apple TV+ series “Extrapolations” alongside Forest Whitaker.
