Action may just be the genre that’s most reliant on money in order to properly pull to a believable degree. Whether it’s car chases or shootouts, pulling it off on a budget isn’t for the faint of heart. So I always commend a film that comes along and does so in a believable way. Sure, Old Guy isn’t going to light the world on fire (check out my review Here) but it’s a decent enough time, especially for indie action.
We at JoBlo recently sat down with Lucy Liu and Simon West to talk about the film, and how difficult it is to make action on a budget. West has been working in the action space for a long time, so we discuss what element gets him to choose one project over another. And given that we’re in the midst of Awards season, and...

Jason Statham and Sylvester Stallone have collaborated on multiple projects over the years, and we’re not just talking about the four Expendables movies they made together. Stallone also wrote the screenplay for the 2013 Statham action film Homefront, which was directed by Gary Fleder and based on a novel by Chuck Logan. Now, Statham and Stallone are continuing their working relationship with the action thriller A Working Man, which also reunites Statham with his The Beekeeper director David Ayer – and looks to be very much along the same lines as that film. A Working Man is set to reach theatres on March 28th, and in anticipation of its release, we decided to put together a list of everything we know about the movie. Here we go:

The Rebel Wilson-led action comedy “Bride Hard” has bagged a domestic release from Magenta Light Studios.
Bob Yari’s upstart production and distribution venture will roll out the feature from Simon West, about a secret agent whose toughest assignment is making sure her friend gets to the altar on time.
The cast is stacked with more than one Barden Bella; it includes Anna Camp, Emmy nominee Anna Chlumsky, Academy Award winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”), Gigi Zumbado (“Heart Eyes”), Stephen Dorff and Justin Hartley. The film is eyeing a wide release for 2025, on the back of Magenta Light’s buzzy first release “Strange Darling.”
Wilson plays Sam, a maid of honor for her childhood best friend. Out of her comfort zone, and with fellow bridesmaids judging her every move, she struggles to maintain her cover. But when a team of mercenaries take the uber-wealthy guests hostage, it’s...

Since the days of classics like Bullitt and Dirty Harry, the action genre has turned into a box office powerhouse, with the 2010's boasting some big ones. The action genre has been a staple of cinema since the earlier days of film. It's been a key to building up careers of Hollywood giants like Bruce Willis through franchises like Die Hard. Often focusing on wronged heroes embarking on a quest for vengeance against criminals and terrorists, the genre is loved for its flashy fight sequences and tough protagonists.
From the late '60s on, each decade of film has produced its share of classics, and the 2010s were no different. Although the decade did begin with a slew of lackluster action movies, the genre soon picked up steam as an array of new franchises were kicked off or taken to new heights. Did John Travolta lose out on The Expendables 2? (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Yes, That was almost the reality, folks, before John Travolta missed his shot at joining the most bro-tastic crew in Hollywood. Back in 2011, the Expendables 2 rumor mill was buzzing. One name cropped up – Travolta. David Varod, CEO of Nu Boyana, casually dropped the bombshell in an interview with Novinite.
The sequel, set to shoot in Bulgaria, was already lined up with a roster that included legends like Stallone, Statham, and Die Hard’s Bruce Willis. And then, just when you thought it couldn’t get any better—Boom—Travolta was supposedly in the mix. It was supposed to be a reunion of every action icon you could imagine. Except… it never happened.
While the idea of Travolta joining the Expendables squad was a fan’s fantasy, it didn’t play out that way. Why? Well, maybe it was...

Jean-Claude Van Damme does not always star in his own franchise sequels, but the legendary action star appears in Kill ‘Em All 2, which is currently trending on Netflix. Jean-Claude Van Damme is one of the world’s most iconic 1980s action stars, but while many of his movies began franchises, he does not always star in their sequels. Van Damme’s movies have often been described as “the most remade” of all time, based on the success of their franchises. However, until Kill ‘Em All 2, Jean-Claude Van Damme had only played three recurring characters.
In Kill 'Em All 2, Van Damme reprises his role as Philip, a former spy on a revenge mission. The movie takes place seven years after Kill 'Em All, with Philip discovering that the brother of one of the men he killed in the original film is also out for revenge. The cast of...

After receiving a degree in chemical engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology and a master’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Sydney, Dolph Lundgren started his acting career with a James Bond film (A View to a Kill) in 1985, quickly followed by his iconic performance as Soviet boxer Ivan Drago in Rocky IV, and then a string of action films. Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky was a surprise worldwide hit despite starring mostly unknown faces, especially Stallone himself. The story of the action legend being almost homeless and out of money before he wrote the screenplay for the sports drama in three days and sold it to a studio is nothing short of legendary.
With Stallone, the studio took a gamble and reportedly only assigned $1 million for the production mostly because the actor insisted on playing the lead man. While it ended up being highly profitable with a worldwide gross of $225 million, Stallone himself could not recreate the feat with another franchise he created decades later.

The Expendables is a franchise that promised action movie fans the ultimate dream: to bring together the greatest action stars of multiple generations under one explosive banner. While the series has delivered its fair share of crowd-pleasing moments and some of the Expendables' biggest stunts, not every casting coup has lived up to its potential. Despite assembling an impressive roster, including Stallone and Schwarzenegger teaming up with rising stars, with each entry, several performers found themselves in roles that failed to capitalize on their unique skills.
From martial arts icons to new actors, these performers deserved better than their brief or underwhelming appearances in the franchise. Whether limited by screen time, poor character development, action sequences that failed to showcase their abilities, or no action sequences at all. These stars represent missed opportunities in a series built on celebrating action cinema.

Critics may not have been fond of this 1980s Chuck Norris Western, but it's one of my guilty pleasures. Norris was part of a wave of action stars to emerge during the 1970s and 1980s, with his roundhouse kicks and trademark beard becoming part of his star persona. The '80s featured some of Chuck Norris' best action movies like the Missing in Action trilogy or, my personal favorite, Code of Silence, but his film career faltered by the time the 1990s arrived. While Norris had a compelling look, he just wasn't that great of an actor.
That's why his most successful movies leaned on his physicality and cut way back on his dialogue. His appearance in The Expendables 2 really exposed this, as the veteran star badly fumbles his own Chuck Norris joke meme. Despite his limits as a performer, I still think Norris made some gems in his career,...

One four-minute action-packed scene from The Expendables 2 is arguably the highlight of the entire series. While the Expendables movies include several of the best action stars of all time, not all the films were loved upon their release. For example, the fourth film in the series, Expend4bles, which came out almost a decade after the third entry, was hated by most fans and critics. Expend4bles received terrible reviews and has a Rotten Tomatoes score of just 14%. On the other hand, The Expendables 2 is the highest-rated movie in the entire series.
The Expendables 2 expanded on the first movie in every way. In addition to stars like Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Bruce Willis, and Dolph Lundgren, The Expendables 2 brought in Arnold Schwarzenegger (who previously only made a brief cameo in the first Expendables movie) and Chuck Norris. The Expendables 2 was the only one of the four Expendables movies that actually accomplished what Sylvester Stallone set out to do with the all-star action franchise. For years, Stallone was best known for headlining two major franchises: the Rocky franchise, about an underdog boxer becoming a world champion, and the Rambo franchise, about a Vietnam War veteran reckoning with the fact that the only thing he knows how to do is kill. But in 2010, Stallone added a third franchise to the roster: The Expendables, about a band of aging mercenaries secretly making the world a better place.
Although it was conceived by screenwriter David Callaham, once Stallone took over the project, The Expendables became an excuse to get every big action movie star on the same marquee. Stallone is backed up by Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, and Mickey Rourke, and Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis make a...

Spy proves one glaring truth about the career of Jason Statham. Statham is an action movie icon whose movies have earned more than $8.4 billion collectively, with some of the highest-grossing being The Fate of the Furious ($1.24 billion), The Meg ($529.3 million), and The Expendables 2 ($274.5 million). Statham has proved to be a box office draw both as a lead in franchises such as The Mechanic, The Transporter, and Crank and as a supporting character, particularly Deckard Shaw in the Fast Saga, who held a title role in the 2019 spinoff Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw.
However, amid his many successful standalone and franchise action movies, Spy reviews have earned the star his best Rotten Tomatoes score yet with a near-perfect, Certified Fresh, 95% score on the review aggregator platform. In a sense, Netflix really is the new Blockbuster Video (or Hollywood Video or whatever rental chain my fellow old people preferred to frequent). Once you marched past the rows stacked with endless copies of the latest release at your local Blockbuster, you could uncover films and TV shows that either flew under the radar or were deemed too scandalous for mainstream tastes. (Stumbling upon and being mildly traumatized by the grotesque cover artwork for horror B-movies was practically a rite of passage for folks of a certain age.) You don't get anywhere near the same range of choices on Netflix -- especially now that its library is increasingly composed of the service's originals -- but it does similarly allow certain older, somewhat forgotten titles to gain a new lease on life, however fleeting it may be.
Admittedly, it's easier to understand why certain movies or series abruptly crack Netflix's...

Jason Statham's 2011 action thriller The Mechanic is a remake of a classic Charles Bronson film of the same name and is now one of the most popular movies on Netflix. The Mechanic remains one of Jason Statham's highest-rated movies of his celebrated career and one of Statham's most successful film franchises. The film follows Statham's Arthur Bishop, an elite hitman or "mechanic" who is the best in the business. After Bishop's mentor Harry (Donald Sutherland) is murdered, Bishop goes on a one-man-army mission to avenge his death and make those responsible pay. It's a classic premise for Statham and one of his most immersive movies.

Netflix has an ever-changing content library, meaning that while some great new titles arrive, some key shows and movies are leaving in October 2024. We're midway through September, and Netflix has been releasing tons of great content on its platform. I Never Thought My Favorite Jean-Claude Van Damme Character Was Also Going To Be One Of His Silliest

Belgian martial artist-turned-actor Jean-Claude Van Damme has many incredible characters under his black belt, but one of my favorites comes from a silly source: The Expendables 2. At 10 years old, Van Damme enrolled in karate school, though I highly doubt he knew the level of success the decision would garner. After earning the Mr. Belgium bodybuilding title in 1978, he moved to Hollywood to become an actor. Ultimately, Van Damme landed his big break as ninjutsu practitioner Frank Dux in the 1988 martial arts flick Bloodsport one of my favorite Van Damme cult classics.
Van Damme's career-launching role in Bloodsport made him a hugely popular action star during the late '80s and well into the '90s. In my opinion, some of his biggest and best career highlights include Kickboxer (1989), Lionheart (1990), Double Impact (1991), and Universal Soldier (1992), though flicks like Hard Target (1993), Timecop (1994), and Street Fighter (1994) also come to mind. Eventually, Van Damme's...

The Expendables reveals a harsh reality about legendary actors Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. The two historic leading men are known for starring in some of the greatest movies of all time and are key figures in the modern makeup of the action genre at large. Stallone of course rose to superstardom by defeating all the odds with the ultimate underdog story Rocky, which has since become one of the most profitable sports movie franchises to ever exist. Schwarzenegger is also an icon in his own right, playing many legendary characters of cinematic history in films like The Terminator, Predator, Total Recall, and Conan the Barbarian.
Despite these two larger-than-life movie stars rising to prominence in Hollywood at around the same time, there has been very little overlap in their cinematic careers. Their very first feature film collaboration didn't happen until 2010's The Expendables and continued in two of its three subsequent sequels,...

Have you ever wondered what happens when an action legend decides to make a comeback after a decade-long hiatus? Look no further than Agent Recon, the latest release featuring none other than Expendables 2 star Chuck Norris. The actor, who lit up screens and filled our hearts with adrenaline as a stunt performer rebel alongside Bruce Lee, rocketed to legendary status through iconic films like The Way of the Dragon.

Alas, Norris’ latest venture, Agent Recon, hasn’t exactly been met with rousing applause. The actor’s performance has been described as “largely motionless” with his almost mannequin-like presence on screen. One disenchanted fan humorously suggested that his on-screen action was so lackluster that it was as if he was a corpse propped up for the film’s effect, or at least a shadow of his former self.

The Expendables franchise started strong with Sylvester Stallone but declined in quality over time. The critical failure of The Expendables 3 set the stage for Expend4bles' bad reviews. Jason Statham did his best in Expend4bles, showcasing his acting skills despite the movie's flaws.
In 2014, Sylvester Stallone handed off The Expendables franchise to his replacement, but the new lead was pretty much doomed from the start. The Expendables franchise started off strong when it first premiered in 2010. The action franchise, helmed by legend Sylvester Stallone, stood out among other movies in the genre due to its star-studded cast and edgy R-rated content. However, barring a slight improvement with The Expendables 2, every new The Expendables movie has seen a decrease in quality and reception. The most recent film, Expend4bles, had the worst response yet with $51 million at the box office and 13% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Powell's trend of remakes and sequels to '80s/'90s films continues in Backdraft. Powell risks being typecast as just an action star if he continues with nostalgic projects. Hopefully, Powell will make more original films to showcase his talent beyond action roles.
High-octane, nostalgia-driven movies have fueled Glen Powell's seemingly meteoric rise, but his new remake plan continues a potentially dangerous trend for the actor. It was recently announced that Powell would star in a remake of Backdraft, the 1991 thriller starring Kurt Russell. While the project promises to bring attention back to a somewhat forgotten thriller, the movie also means that Glen Powell is continuing to pursue a particular type of movie role something I'd like to see him move away from.

With Inside Out 2 boosting 2024’s summer sales by becoming the first film to break a billion dollars this year, it’s now on Deadpool 3 to keep this momentum flowing, which is set to release this month. While fans are expecting to see many beloved heroes appear onscreen, following the scale of this multiversal story, one variant that no one wants to see again is Deadpool from X-Men Origins.
Arguably on par with Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern, in terms of butchering a beloved comic figure, John Wick star Scott Adkins took the blame for the infamous version of the character.

Hollywood veterans Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, and Bruce Willis are widely regarded as 3 of the greatest action heroes of all time, having gifted some of the most immersive pieces to the cinema. That’s why, when they collaborated for The Expendables films series, the result was nothing short of a pure blissful experience for audiences and big bucks for the actors.

Van Damme excelled in his villain roles, bringing complexity and charisma to characters like Stillman and Vincent Brazil. Films like "Swelter" and "Assassination Games" showcased Van Damme's ability to play morally questionable, sinister characters. While "Enemies Closer" and "The Expendables 2" allowed Van Damme to shine as a villain, there is a desire for him to play more villainous roles.
Action star Jean-Claude Van Damme has unusually portrayed the hero, but there have been several occasions where he showed off his villainous side. Although movies like Bloodsport and Universal Solider cast him as the lead protagonist, some of Van Dammes best performances came when he was allowed to let loose and play a sinister baddie. Through mind-bending sci-fi films to star-studded action franchises, Van Damme has had his fair share of villainous roles in the 45 years since his acting debut.

The Expendables franchise started strong with an impressive ensemble of legendary action stars in the first installment. The introduction of the "Young Expendables" in the third film set up a potential new direction for the franchise. However, The Expendables 4's lackluster performance and failure to capitalize on the young recruits led to its downfall.
Before The Avengers, the greatest crossover of all time might have been 2010's The Expendables. Directed by Sylvester Stallone, the over-the-top action flick's premise hinges on its impressive ensemble cast of legendary action stars. The first installment boasted not just Stallone, who plays Barney Ross the leader of the titular elite group of mercenaries but greats like Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Bruce Willis, and, notably, 2024's biggest action star, Jason Statham. While The Expendables is light on plot, its top-notch action sequences helped the film gross a staggering $274.5 million.

Sylvester Stallone is set to part with some of his beloved watches, with the Rocky star auctioning 11 luxury timepieces from his collection at Sotheby’s New York on June 5. Included in the sale is an extremely rare Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime, seen by enthusiasts and collectors as one of the most complicated wristwatches in the world, that originally sold for $2.5 million.
Aside from Stallone’s star power, what’s sure to draw interest to the forthcoming sale is that this will be the first time a Grandmaster Chime has been put up for commercial auction. In 2019, at the Only Watch charitable auction, a one-off steel model Grandmaster Chime sold for a whopping $31 million, setting a record. Stallone’s Grandmaster Chime has a price estimate between $2.5 million to $5 million, but is likely to climb well north of that, with a record price for a watch at a non-charity auction a real possibility.

Despite being a box office flop, Expend4bles surprisingly earned the best Rotten Tomatoes audience score of all Expendables movies at 70%. Audiences and critics have very different preferences; viewers may enjoy Expend4bles' chaos while critics may focus on its faults like bad CGI. Expend4bles lacked the star power and nostalgia factor of its predecessors, leading to speculation about the future of the franchise.

Super-producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently told People magazine that Bruce Willis was so generous on the set of their 1998 blockbuster “Armageddon” that he gave money away to the crew to make sure people had some “nice extra cash at the end of the week.” Willis headlined the Michael Bay-directed film opposite Billy Bob Thornton, Liv Tyler and Ben Affleck.
“Bruce is such a good guy,” Bruckheimer said. “He was so generous to the crew. They’d have [cash giveaway] drawings, and he’d throw a lot of money in the hat, and the crew members would always take away some nice extra cash at the end of the week, whoever won.”
Bruckheimer called Willis a “giving guy” and a “good friend.” Apparently the “Armageddon” crew had a weekly cash pot going at the end of each week of production. Willis made sure to increase the jackpot with his own money to make the reward that much greater.

The Avenue has landed North American rights to the action comedy “Old Guy,” starring Christoph Waltz, Lucy Liu and Cooper Hoffman.
Simon West directed the film, while “The Last Son” scribe Greg Johnson penned the script.
The film follows aging contract killer Danny Dolinski (Waltz), who still believes he’s the best at what he does. Marco Brambilla's 1993 film "Demolition Man" has a pretty wild premise. In the near-future of 1996, a wildly destructive criminal named Simon Phoenix (Wesley Snipes) is at large and taking hostages in Los Angeles. The cop sent in to apprehend Pheonix is John Spartan (Sylvester Stallone), an officer so reckless that he's earned the nickname of Demolition Man. When Spartan finds and confronts Pheonix, he explodes the building they're in. They both escape, but an investigation reveals the bodies of the hostages in the rubble. Oops. Spartan didn't handle that operation very well.
As punishment, Spartan and Pheonix are both subjected to a new prison experiment. Instead of living in cells, prisoners are cryogenically frozen for decades and fed subliminal rehabilitation messages. Spartan is thawed in the year 2032, where the world is now overseen by a benevolent (seeming) right-wing cult leader who has whipped Los Angeles -- now San Angeles -- into shape.

It’s an interesting month on HBO and Max this March, as two acclaimed films hit the streamer along with some intriguing original programming.
First up in the movies arena is the streaming debut of Wonka, starring Timothée Chalamet. Later in March on Max, there’s also Dream Scenario, a highly-regarded comedy boasting Nicolas Cage as Paul Matthews, who suddenly starts appearing in people’s dreams for unknown reasons, and who naturally becomes very famous as a result of this strange phenomena.
Series-wise, the biggest show on Max this month is The Regime. It packs a solid cast, including Kate Winslet, Matthias Schoenaerts, Andrea Riseborough, Martha Plimpton, and Hugh Grant, and tells the story of “life within the walls of a modern...

Directed and co-written by Sylvester Stallone, The Expendables was a hit when it was released in 2010, drawing in viewers who wanted to see an old school action movie that allowed Stallone to share the screen with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis for the first time. Two years later, The Expendables 2 was even more successful, and many fans feel that film is where the concept really reached its potential. Mistakes were made on 2014’s The Expendables 3 that could have been easily fixed with a fourth film, which should have come along after a couple years. Instead, it took nine years for Expend4bles to happen… and when it did, with Scott Waugh at the helm, Stallone not only didn’t have a writing credit, but he was barely even in the movie. Expend4bles was a box office failure. But franchise cast member Dolph Lundgren thinks we might still see The Expendables 5 someday.

Dolph Lundgren is open to returning for Expendables 5 if Sylvester Stallone is in charge and involved in the development. Stallone's creative direction and involvement in the scriptwriting were crucial to the success of the first two films in the franchise. A potential Expendables 5 needs Stallone's larger involvement to save the franchise and bring back original cast members, restoring audience interest.
While the latest chapter has left the franchise's future in doubt, Dolph Lundgren is open to an Expendables 5 return on one condition. The action genre vet has starred in all four installments in the franchise as Gunner Jensen, one of the senior members of the group of mercenaries and their heavy weapons expert. The Expendables served as the first major reunion between Lundgren and Sylvester Stallone after the former's breakthrough role of Ivan Drago in Rocky IV, which he would later reprise for 2018's Creed II.
