Juliette Binoche has been named this year’s Cannes Film Festival jury president.

The news, announced by the festival early on Tuesday morning, comes nearly 40 years after Binoche’s Croisette debut in André Téchiné’s Rendez-vous.

The French star won the Cannes best actress prize for Abbas Kiarostami’s Certified Copy in 2010. That same year sheprotested against the imprisonment of Jafar Panahi, brandishing a placard bearing the director’s name on stage.

Let me start off by saying I loved Deadpool & Wolverine. It was easily the best superhero movie of 2024 and rightfully earned every dollar it made. However, it does not deserve an Oscar nomination.

The possible categories Deadpool & Wolverine had any chance for being nominated for could have been nominated for are Best Picture, Actor in a Leading Role, Actress in a Supporting Role, Writing (Adapted Screenplay), and Visual Effects. The rest, it had no chance of receiving a nomination for.

The much-anticipated 2025 Oscar nominations were officially unveiled on January 23 at 7 Pm Ist. Hosted by Bowen Yang, Rachel Sennott, Sian Heder, and Eric Roth, the announcement took place at the iconic Samuel Goldwyn Theater, a hallmark of the Academy’s legacy. The event was live-streamed on platforms like Disney+ Hotstar, Oscar.com, Oscars.org, and the Academy’s social media handles. Additionally, it was broadcast on ABC’s Good Morning America.

Originally planned for January 17, the nomination announcement faced delays due to the LA wildfires, which disrupted the voting process. In response, the Academy extended the voting window and canceled the traditional Oscar Nominees Luncheon to ensure fairness and prioritize safety amidst the challenges.

After months of hype, campaigning, predictions, and pivots, the 2025 Oscar nominations arrived Thursday to provide clarity in a muddled awards season.

Leading the way: Emilia Pérez (13 nominations), The Brutalist (10), Wicked (10), A Complete Unknown (eight), and Conclave (eight). Those films will compete with Anora, Dune: Part Two, I’m Still Here, Nickel Boys, and The Substance.

With its 13 nominations — including Best Director (Jacques Audiard), Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldaña) — Emilia Pérez set a record for an international film, eclipsing Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Roma, which each had 10. The Spanish-language, Mexico-set French-imported musical’s tally matched last year’s leader, Oppenheimer, which went on to win Best Picture.

But without an Oppenheimer-esque juggernaut dominating the precursor awards, it’s expected to be a tight race with formidable competition.

As usual, the Oscars gave us some real surprises this morning. They went much bigger for A Complete Unknown and Wicked than originally expected. They also snubbed Challengers in several categories, left out Selena Gomez in Supporting Actress, and celebrated Nosferatu in places where Dune: Part Two got dropped. French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat’s body horror masterpiece The Substance was one of the best horror movies of last year, and it’s one of the rare horror films to come along in recent years that had actually been generating Academy Awards buzz. Well, the nominations for this year’s Oscars were announced today, and The Substance received some major recognition.

For starters, Demi Moore has been nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for her performance as Elisabeth Sparkle in The Substance, a fading celebrity who injects herself with a cell-replicating substance that literally makes her give birth to a younger version of herself (Margaret Qualley). It’s a performance that already resulted in Moore taking home the Golden Globes trophy for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, which sets the stage for a potential Academy Awards win.

Timothee Chalamet’s Oscar buzz is growing strong as his musical biopic A Complete Unknown continues its stronghold at the box office. It is in the news for its impressive performance despite facing tentpole movies at the cinemas. It has now surpassed the domestic haul of one of the most expensive films of 2024, Joker: Folie a Deux or Joker 2. It features Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga in the lead roles. Like many award shows around town, they’d been delayed by the L.A. wildfires, which continue to approach containment. The luncheon had previously been dated for Friday, January 10.

The musical biopic surpassed All Eyez on Me’s $44.9 million domestic haul on its third Wednesday to become the #14 highest-grossing ever at the US box office. The 2024 release is based on the 2015 book Dylan Goes Electric! by Elijah Wald; the film portrays the legendary singer through his earliest folk music success until the considerable controversy over his use of electric instruments at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival.

Like a rolling stone gathers no moss, Timothee Chalamet’s awards campaign for A Complete Unknown continues unabated. On Friday, NBC announced Chalamet will host the Jan. 25 edition of Saturday Night Live and serve as the night’s musical guest. The expectation is that Chalamet, who plays Bob Dylan in the new film, will perform Dylan songs on the broadcast.

Regardless of the playlist, Chalamet’s dual role on the broadcast will make some Saturday Night Live history. Chalamet is one of the most prominent rising stars in Hollywood, and has starred in movies such as Call Me by Your Name, Beautiful Boy, and Bones and All. 2024 was one of the best years of Chalamet's career, as he starred in the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown. Reviews for A Complete Unknown, which chronicles a few years early on in Dylan's career, have been exceptional.

The red carpet has been rolled out, the suits and gowns have been set free, and the statuettes have been shined, which can only mean one thing: Awards season is back back back! Last night, at a ceremony in Los Angeles hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser, it was the 2025 Golden Globes' turn to kick off the Hollywood festivities, offering us our first real sense of the top dogs and dark horses as the BAFTAs and Oscars inch ever nearer. And so far, Jacques Audiard's trans mobster musical Emilia Pérez and Brady Corbet's monumental epic The Brutalist are leading the pack, with the two movies picking up four and three gongs respectively on a night in which major contenders Anora, Conclave, and Wicked were largely relegated to the sidelines.

The 82nd Golden Globes awards ceremony has just finished up, and while a number of comic book, sci-fi, fantasy and horror movies and TV shows were nominated in several major categories, only a few prevailed on the night.

Colin Farrell won Best actor in an anthology, limited series, or TV movie for his lead performance as Oz Cobb in The Penguin, but co-star Cristin Milioti lost out to Jodie Foster (True Detective: Night Country).

Kathryn Hahn was nominated for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy for Marvel Studios' Agatha All Along, but Jean Smart picked up the award for Hacks.

Deadpool and Wolverine was nominated in the recently-added Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category, along with the likes of Alien: Romulus Twisters and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, but Wicked skipped away with the gong.

James Mangold's new Bob Dylan movie, A Complete Unknown, is drawing a surprising comparison to the biopic of a completely different music icon. Timothee Chalamet stars as Bob Dylan alongside several remarkable actors who play real people involved in Dylan's life in the early 1960s. Despite only having been released on December 25, 2024, A Complete Unknown is already breaking box office records and receiving Oscars buzz. In fact, Chalamet is considered one of the top contenders for a Best Actor Oscar nomination and is currently favored to win, confirming just how good he is in the role.

However, Chalamet is not the only Oscar-worthy talent behind A Complete Unknown, as director James Mangold has previously shown his skills as a biopic director. In 2005, Mangold directed Walk the Line, a Johnny Cash biopic, which was nominated for five Oscars and saw Reese Witherspoon...

Viewers who enjoyed Netflix's thriller movie Carry-On have several upcoming Taron Egerton films and a brand-new television series to look forward to. Egerton leads the cast of Carry-On alongside Jason Bateman (Ozark), Sofia Carson (Descendants), Danielle Deadwyler (The Piano Lesson), and Theo Rossi (The Penguin). Carry-On received a Rotten Tomatoes score of 88% and has remained one of the top movies on Netflix since it was released on the streaming platform on December 13, 2024.

Carry-On was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra based on a screenplay written by T.J. Fixman (Ratchet & Clank). It follows Egerton's protagonist Ethan Kopek, a young Tsa agent who is blackmailed by a mysterious traveler (Bateman) into letting a dangerous package slip through securtiy and onto a crowded flight on Christmas Eve. Egerton, who is best known for his roles in the Kingsman spy action films and the Elton John biopic Rocketman, hasn't starred in a feature film since 2023's Tetris.

Awards season is officially ready to launch. On Sunday night, the Golden Globes will kick off the race to the 2025 Oscars with the 82nd annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony.
