Johnny Marr has announced that he’ll be releasing a best-of compilation album, Spirit Power: The Best of Johnny Marr, on November 3rd via BMG. Personally curated by Marr, Spirit Power will celebrate his past decade of output, focusing on highlights from the string of solo albums he released between 2013 and 2022. Joining those tracks are previously-released singles “Armatopia” and “The Priest,” as well as a 2015 cover of Depeche Mode’s “I Feel You.” For the deluxe 2xCD version of the album, fans will also get to hear a handful of previously-unheard demos and rarities. As for the two brand new songs — “The Answer” and the single “Somewhere” — they were both produced by Marr with his co-producer, James Doviak.

In the summer of 2021, I stumbled onto the world cryptocurrency by accident. A friend of mine encouraged me to buy some Bitcoin at the height of the mania, and to be honest, I was tempted. According to media reports, a lot of knuckleheads seemed to be getting rich off these cryptos, whatever the hell they were. I had never paid them much mind before, but I have a degree in economics and these things sure didn’t act like currencies as I understood them. That piqued my interest. It was...

Daniel Espinosa is a director who likes what's real. Going back to his directorial debut, the Swedish crime picture "Snabba Cash" (presented by Martin Scorsese), he tends to go for real environments, car crashes, and stunts. Espinosa's first Hollywood action movie, "Safe House," emphasized practical effects. Even when the director made his sci-fi movie, "Life," he didn't want it to be a CG-fest.
Now, given all the CGI in "Morbius," Espinosa calls the new experience a bit surreal. It's his biggest movie to date, as well as hist most computer-generated. Even the titular monster's face is CGI, although Espinosa initially planned to go...

The headline news for fantasy fans on Netflix UK this month is the arrival of eight-part adaptation Shadow and Bone, based on Leigh Bardugo’s Grisha trilogy. It’s the story of Alina, a girl who discovers she wields a mighty power that sees her targeted by a covetous foe. You can read more about the cast here. For families, at the end of the month there’s Sony’s latest animated feature The Mitchells Vs the Machines, which is made by the creators of excellent animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
Comedy-wise, Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer co-star in regular-Joan-gets-superpowers movie Thunder Force. And for anybody looking to brush up their Spanish for a summer holiday, Netflix has the latest Harlan Coben mystery thriller, The Innocent.
On top of that, there’s a clutch of older films, from John Carpenter’s They Live to the Coen Bros.’ The Big Lebowski...

Netflix is the king of the streaming world until proven otherwise. But in recent months the streamer’s lists of new releases have looked relatively sparse as competing media conglomerates remove their titles from Netflix’s library. With its list of new releases for April 2021, however, Netflix appears to have its original production machine operating at high capacity once again.
There are plenty of intriguing Netflix original series and films this month. The one that appears to have the highest blockbuster potential though is the series Shadow and Bone on April 23. Shadow and Bone is adapted from Leigh Bardugo’s Grisha-verse trilogy and should bring another compelling sci-fi/fantasy universe to the streaming world.

Ryan Reynolds is one of the most popular actors on the planet, while Denzel Washington is one of the most respected and acclaimed talents to ever grace the silver screen, and both stars have an impressive track record of box office success. Throw them together in an old fashioned two-hander that doubles as a high concept action thriller, and a big hit with audiences is almost guaranteed.

The film landscape in Scandinavia is far from homogenous. In Sweden, where no drastic coronavirus restrictions were enforced, shoots were not suspended so long as no more than 50 people were assembled, while elsewhere in the Nordics, a lockdown was imposed and film productions were stopped.
On April 14, film production resumed in Denmark — after a pause that lasted more than a month — under a new set of rules relating to the coronavirus crisis that also apply to Sweden, according to the Nordic Film Guide, which was put together by the Swedish banner Hobby Film and based on information released by government bodies. Besides leaner crew numbers, the guidelines also require at least 4 square-meters (43 square-feet) between each person on interior shoots and no buffets or coffee stations on set. Crowd scenes are out of the question right now. Shooting in public places in Sweden is permitted, while Denmark is allowing such lensing on a case-by-case basis.

Netflix has placed an order for “Vinterviken 2021,” a contemporary adaptation of the acclaimed 1993 Mats Wohl novel, “Vinterviken,” the U.S. streaming giant announced Thursday.
In a coup for Endemol Shine’s Emea scripted division, “Vinterviken 2021” will be produced by Filmlance International, part of the Endemol Shine Group and producer of the original “The Bridge” (“Bron”/”Broen”), a milestone in Nordic Noir, as well as “Caliphate,” which earlier this year broke audience records on Swedish public broadcaster Svt’s VOD catch-up service Svt Play.
The original novel inspired a high-profile movie of the same title. The inclusion of the year in the new movie’s title looks like a declaration of intentions. A high school romantic drama, “Vinterviken 2021” plumbs social inequalities and prejudice which have only grown in the 25 years since the novel, doing so through a teen love story between Elisabeth and John-John where the audience discover, along with its...

Global film and TV executives, including “Elizabeth” producer Alison Owen and “Shakespeare in Love” producer David Parfitt, have spoken out about Harvey Weinstein’s guilty verdict, calling it a “seismic” victory that will bring about immutable change.
Monday’s long-awaited outcome to the U.S. trial, which saw Weinstein convicted of sexual assault and third-degree rape, has been regarded as a landmark victory that will continue to transcend borders and impact women in the international industry.
Monumental Pictures boss Owen, who has produced the likes of “Suffragette” and “Jane Eyre,” worked with Weinstein across five films and, in 2017, broke her silence on his “sleazeball” behavior on set. Owen’s sister-in-law Laura Madden, a former Miramax employee, was one of the first women to go on the record for the New York Times’ ground-breaking investigation into Weinstein.

The CW is aiming to be a bit of a David in a sea of Sunday night Goliaths. The network is returning to Sunday nights this fall for the first time since 2009, which could be huge news for the producers and talent behind The CW’s existing shows and new pilots.
By adding two more hours to the network’s schedule (8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Et), The CW will program 12 hours of original scripted fare in-season — likely more than Fox in the fall, which will devote at least seven of its 15 hours to sports (and a few more hours toward reality fare).
“We’re increasing our scheduling by 20 percent,” The CW president Mark Pedowitz said. “That’s a big-sized bite. We will do this with the same quality programming we do on Monday through Friday, on Sunday nights.”

Swedish director Daniel Espinosa might have been another foreign filmmaker working in obscurity until his film Snabba Cash (Easy Money) caught the attention of Hollywood, and he was hired to helm Safe House, an action-thriller starring Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington that became a huge hit over here. (Espinosa’s next movie, the psychological thriller Child 44, failed to find much of an audience, more due to poor marketing than anything else.)
Now, Espinosa is back with Life, an outer space thriller starring Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson and more, which looks at what it might be like if life was discovered on Mars, and what might happen if that life turns out to be hostile. For the astronauts of the Iss (International Space Station), it becomes a life or death situation as a single cell organism starts growing and becoming stronger and smarter, as they have to figure out...

In the taut wilderness thriller Edge of Winter, Joel Kinnaman plays an unemployed, single dad with seething personal issues and more than a bit of a mean streak. It's another complex character in an increasingly long line of layered performances by Kinnaman, who always manages to bring humanity to his roles, no matter how flawed the characters may be. After his breakout role in the Swedish crime thriller Easy Money (aka Snabba Cash), Kinnaman came to widespread attention for his portrayal of detective Holder in AMC's The Killing. Now, like many actors these days, he seems comfortable sliding between Hollywood tentpoles like Robocop and Suicide Squad, independent productions like Edge of Winter and even television with roles on House of Cards and the streaming service's upcoming cyberpunk show...

Here's the first trailer for Edge of Winter, a new thriller starring Suicide Squad leader Joel Kinnaman (RoboCop remake, AMC's The Killing) and the McU's new Spider-Man, Tom Holland. Kinnaman plays a father who's struggling to retain visitation rights with his two sons (the other played by Percy Hynes White), and after they get stranded way out in the wintry woods, things go from bad to worse when they meet a new bunch of characters at a nearby cabin. This looks like Kinnaman has a lot of dramatic heft to throw around in this one, and this may be the most fascinating character he's played since he starred in Snabba Cash (aka Easy Money) back in 2010.

If I had to name the film that’s causing agents the greatest amount of stress about their young, male British clients’ future — I don’t know why I have to name that film, but let’s just go with this for a second — it would be Christopher Nolan‘s Dunkirk, an IMAX-shot World War II actioner that Warner Bros. have given a prime summer spot on their 2017 slate. Although it already may have leads in the form of Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, and Tom Hardy, its large ensemble will primarily consist of unknowns — which is to say, “multiple opportunities for young, male British actors.”

It’s hardly uncommon for New Hollywood figureheads to support (often in the executive producer position) a project by young, up-and-coming filmmakers that recalls their own work. If only that list – which includes the Transformers series, Super 8 (Spielberg both), Willow (George Lucas), the Jeepers Creepers series (Francis Ford Coppola), and Snabba Cash (Martin Scorsese) – was a little better. (Our favorite example? Last year’s The Better Angels, which has Terrence Malick’s stamp of approval.) But the endorsement should count for something. Should.

It’s hard to dislike Tom Hardy as an actor. Whatever cinematic challenge he takes on, from atypically brainy blockbusters like Inception and The Dark Knight Rises to taut dramas like Bronson and Locke, he always gives it his all, digging under his character’s skins with a diligence and canniness that elevates him above possibly any other actor of his generation. Along the way, he’s found particular success in embodying strong, silent types, the kinds of men who more resemble wild animals than well-mannered gentlemen. Hardy’s characters are like caged wolves – as much as you want to reach in and pet them, you might lose your hand if you do.

Until now, Daniel Espinosa has generally been known for gritty genre fare ("Snabba Cash," "Safe House," the upcoming "Child 44"), but for his next jaunt he's boldly going to outer space. The director is in talks to helm "Morningstar" for Warner Bros. The plot details of the script by David Birke ("Gacy," "13 Sins") are being kept under wraps, but it is said to have the vibe of a Cold War thriller and involve "world building." So basically, it sounds like it's an opportunity for Espinosa to expand the wheelhouse he's already in. [The Wrap] While yet another take on "David Copperfield" hardly sounds exciting, our interest is certainly piqued with Armando Ianucci ("Veep," "The Thick Of It") behind the camera. He'll helm a new take on the Charles Dickens classic with BBC Films honcho Christine Langan saying Ianucci's “sensibility usually runs very clearly through all his work. This won’t...

Pictures, the actor is heading to the studio that made the first adaptation of the DC Comics superhero for his next project. Deadline has word that Gibson is attached to star in Desert Eagle, an action spec script that the actor/rapper wrote with Mike Le. The story follows two border patrol agents sent to investigate a drug cartel being operated out of a Native American reservation casino. That sounds kind of like an old school thriller premise from the 90s. The script will now be rewritten by Matthew Stuecken and Josh Campbell (they also wrote the remake of Snabba Cash in development) with Ted 2 producer Scott Stuber on board as well, but the original script should be a...

Exclusive: Looking to get more mileage out of its relationship with Furious 7 star Tyrese Gibson, Universal Pictures has optioned Desert Eagle, an action spec scripted by Gibson and Mike Le. The plan is for it to serve as a star vehicle for the actor-musician. They’ve hired Matthew Stuecken and Josh Campbell to rewrite the script. Ted 2‘s Scott Stuber will produce via his Bluegrass Films banner. Gibson will be exec producer through his Voltron Filmz.
In Desert Eagle, a pair of border patrol agents investigate a drug cartel being operated out of a Native American reservation casino. Gibson last starred in 2013’s Fast & Furious 6, which grossed $788 million worldwide, as well as Fox Searchlight’s Black Nativity. Aside from reprising his Roman Pierce role in Furious 7, he co-stars with Jake Gyllenhaal in the Antoine Fuqua-directed Southpaw and opposite Kevin Hart and Ice Cube in the...

I've seen two films by director Daniel Espinosa — the Swedish thriller Snabba Cash, and his American studio debut Safe House — and I enjoyed them both. Child 44, his newest film, is an adaptation of the best-selling 2008 novel that stars Tom Hardy as a Soviet soldier trying to track down a child-murdering serial killer. Ridley Scott produced the film, which also stars Noomi Rapace, Gary Oldman, Joel Kinnaman, and Vincent Cassel. Thanks to iTunes for the trailer. The film arrives in theaters on April 17th.
A politically-charged serial killer thriller set in 1953 Soviet Russia, Child 44 chronicles the crisis of conscience for secret police agent Leo Demidov (Hardy), who loses status, power and home when he refuses to denounce his own wife, Raisa (Rapace), as a traitor. Exiled from Moscow to a grim provincial outpost, Leo and Raisa join forces with General Mikhail Nesterov (Oldman) to track down a serial killer who preys on young boys.

We're still waiting for Swedish-raised filmmaker Daniel Espinosa to make good on the promise of his 2010 thriller "Snabba Cash" (aka "Easy Money"). The movie launched the international career of Joel Kinnaman (2013’s “RoboCop”) and made Espinosa a much in-demand filmmaker for Hollywood studios —after juggling several offers, he directed “Safe,” starring Denzel Washington. But will Espinosa become of those acclaimed foreign filmmakers who devolve into the anonymous Hollywood hackwork (like, ahem, Baltasar Kormákur)? Maybe Espinosa will fare a little bit better with his upcoming film “Child 44.” Based on the first novel in author Tom Rob Smith’s trilogy featuring disgraced Mgb Agent Leo Demidov investigating a series of gruesome child murders in Joseph Stalin's Soviet Union, the movie stars Tom Hardy as Demidov and co-stars Noomi Rapace, Kinnaman, Gary Oldman and Vincent Cassel. Here's the official synopsis: A politically-charged serial killer...

Somehow, the sloppily assembled, unfunny "Let's Be Cops" earned over $120 million worldwide (Wtf), and since money talks in Hollywood, that means director Luke Greenfield gets to level up. And so he shall, setting up the movie "Slingshot," which is said to be in the spirit of "E.T." and "Back To The Future." No other plot details are available just yet, but let's just hope a little more craft is put into that effort. [Deadline] Daniel Espinosa ("Safe House," "Snabba Cash") has been tapped to direct "Boston Strong." The project was once set to star Casey Affleck, who has since dropped out of the movie that "follows the massive manhunt to apprehend the two men believed to be responsible for the bombings, as well as examining the city’s reaction following the events." “The Fighter” writers Eric Johnson and Paul Tamasy penned the script, but no word yet on when production might begin.

Following a creative hiccup that resulted in the loss of director Fredrik Bond, the action sequel London Has Fallen is seemingly back on track with Scandinavian director Babak Najafi, director of the Snabba Cash sequel Easy Money II: Hard to Kill, behind the camera. We already knew Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart and Morgan Freeman were all returning from Olympus Has Fallen, and now The Wrap has added a new cast member into the mix with Watchmen and A Nightmare on Elm Street remake star Jackie Earle Haley taking the role of Deputy Chief Mason. What are the odds that he ends up being the main bad guy? We're not sure, but casting an actor like that in what seems like a disposable role certainly raises our eyebrows. In addition, the trade has revealed that other returning cast members from the original film include Melissa Leo as Secretary of Defense Ruth...

Earlier this month, the Olympus Has Fallen sequel lost its director, Fredrik Bond, with just weeks before the film started shooting. Thankfully though Millennium and Gerard Butler have found a replacement in Scandinavian director Babak Najafi. He directed the Snabba cash sequel Easy Money II: Hard to Kill, but London Has Fallen will be his English-language debut.
As soon as Bond left London, the studio and Butler started looking for a new director to take over. But the actor wasn't liking the directing prospects so much so that he considered leaving the project entirely. Wayne Blair (The Sapphires) and Gary Fleder (Homefront, Runaway Jury) were considered, but Najafi led the race.
Written by Creighton Rothenberger, Katrin Benedikt, and Christian Gudegast. The Olympus sequel picks up in London, where the British Prime Minister has passed away under mysterious circumstances. His funeral is a must-attend event for leaders of the Western world.

Just last month, we learned that Charlie Countryman director Fredrik Bond would get behind the camera for London Has Fallen the sequel to Olympus Has Fallen, one of two White House-set thrillers that hit theaters in 2013. However, recently creative differences saw Bond leave the project weeks before production was slated to begin, prompting producers to quickly look for a replacement to step up and stay on schedule. Now it sounds like they've found one as THR reports Scandinavian director Babak Najafi, director of the Snabba Cash sequel Easy Money II: Hard to Kill, is now in talks to tackle the sequel instead. More below! This would mark the English-language feature film debut of Najafi, but he has also directed some episodes of the Cinemax action thriller series "Banshee," so he's not completely inexperienced. The sequel sounds like it has a lot of struggles to overcome, especially since star Gerard Butler...

Exclusive: Looks like Gerard Butler won’t be alone for London Has Fallen, the Millennium Films sequel to the action hit Olympus Has Fallen. Babak Najafi, best known for helming Easy Money II: Hard to Kill (better known as the sequel to Snabba Cash) is now in discussions to helm the action film that is being transplanted to the Blighty.
This has been a hot open assignment since Charlie Countryman helmer Fredrik Bond bristled at the scale of the movie and exited. He got the job after the helmer of the original, Antoine Fuqua, didn’t like the sequel direction and decided not to take part.
Several up and comers went after the job, and were rumored to be getting on a plane and heading to meet Butler. One was Wayne Blair, helmer of The Sapphires. Now, I’m told that the job will belong to Najafi if his reps...
