After starting off his career by directing independent dramas like George Washington and All the Real Girls, David Gordon Green shifted over to making stoner comedies like Pineapple Express and Your Highness for a while, then made his horror debut by taking the helm of a full trilogy of Halloween sequels: the 2018 Halloween, Halloween Kills, and Halloween Ends. That trilogy turned out to be rather divisive – some fans love what Green did with them, others were disappointed with how the story played out. Then he was planning to direct a trilogy of sequels to The Exorcist… but when The Exorcist: Believer was poorly received, he stepped away from that project. He’s currently doing the press rounds for his latest film, the family holiday comedy Nutcrackers, and during an interview with MovieWeb he shared advice and encouragement for directors who have the chance to work on established franchises like he...

Director David Gordon Green returns to the world of comedy with Nutcrackers, starring Ben Stiller. Here’s a festive trailer:
For the last few years, director David Gordon Green has spearheaded the revival of John Carpenter’s iconic Halloween franchise, helming 2018’s Halloween, 2021’s Halloween Kills and 2023’s Halloween Ends. It was quite a sharp left turn from the films that made his name, like The Sitter, Your Highness and stoner comedy Pineapple Express. Or his stately dramas like George Washington, All The Real Girls or Joe.
Now, Gordon Green returns to the world of comedy with Nutcrackers, a festive film about a wealthy single chap (Ben Stiller) who reluctantly becomes the surrogate father figure to a highly dysfunctional family.
The synopsis for the movie reads as follows:
Hotshot Chicago real estate developer Michael (Ben Stiller) never had time for family. His sister once said he was incapable of love.

Over the years since he first embarked on this adventurous journey as an actor, James Franco has starred in quite a lot of top-notch roles that have made him stand as one of the most pre-eminent actors in the entire industry. But while a majority of them have landed him global recognition, he has also made some bad choices that didn’t result in the best of situations for him.

This year’s Toronto International Film Festival will open with a familiar face: filmmaker David Gordon Green’s latest, the world premiere of his heartfelt comedy “Nutcrackers,” will kick off the festival on September 5. While Green is a regular at the annual festival, screening everything from his Jake Gyllenhaal-starring Boston Marathon biopic “Stronger” to his horror re-quel “Halloween” at the event, 2024 marks the first time he will officially open the fall fest.
The film also sounds as if it marks a return to early form for the longtime auteur, who has spent his most recent years helming a series of horror-centric sequels and remakes, including three “Halloween” films and last year’s “The Exorcist: Believer.” For his newest feature, Green seems to be reinvested in the kind of personal drama that drove early films like “All the Real Girls” and “Undertow,” albeit with a slightly lighter touch.

David Gordon Green's 2018 slasher film "Halloween," a direct sequel to John Carpenter's 1978 slasher film also called "Halloween," famously ignored the nine "Halloween" sequels and remakes made from 1981 to 2009. The original film starred Jamie Lee Curtis as a teenage babysitter named Laurie Strode who ran afoul of a mysterious, silent masked killer named Michael Myers. In the original "Halloween II," it was revealed that Laurie was Michael's long-lost sister, a conceit Green would handily abandon for his 2018 update. Instead, Laurie was, 40 years later, still wounded by the events of the 1978 film, and had become a ragged survivalist, outfitting her home with booby traps and training herself how to use weapons in the off chance that Michael should ever escape the local mental institution and begin his killing spree again. Perhaps predictably, that very thing happens.
Green's "Halloween" ends with Laurie trapping Michael in a burning building, seemingly to die forever.

As noted in this intro to a “Happy Sad Confused” conversation with David Gordon Green, the filmmaker behind “The Exorcist: Believer,” the director’s career is confusing to many. He began as an indie arthouse filmmaker; then started directing studio comedies, many of which were produced by Judd Apatow, and then, of course, he’s gone off on his recent horror detour which has included a “Halloween” trilogy that started in 2018 and what’s intended to be a new “Exorcist” trilogy that started this year with “Believer.”

The reality is that from the very beginning, Green claims he was a cinematic omnivore who looked at Steven Soderbergh, a filmmaker who’s tackled every genre under the sun, as his guiding light model.

Even as The Exorcist: Believer gets panned by critics and looks to be one of the craziest gambles ever by a movie studio – Universal shelled out $400 million for the rights – director David Gordon Green may avoid helming the rest of the planned trilogy. But his decision may have less to do with its reception than just how he operates.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, David Gordon Green said it’s quite possible that he’ll get sucked into another project instead of directing more Exorcist movies. “My intention is just to start making things, and as those plans come together, if I find myself in that [The Exorcist: Deceiver] director’s chair, I’d be thrilled… But right now, I’m navigating it from a story perspective and looking at my realities of life as I pivot.” He added, “One of the things that’s been really great between these...

Could anyone have foreseen the legitimately fascinating trajectory of David Gordon Green's career as a director? After helming gritty, dramatic fare like "George Washington" and "All the Real Girls" as a newbie filmmaker, Green suddenly pivoted hard in the opposite direction, tackling the genre-blending stoner flicks "Pineapple Express" and "Your Highness." He would only branch out further from there, trying his hand at everything from uplifting true-story films ("Stronger") to grounded crime dramas ("Joe"), darkly satirical TV series, and even heavily-fictionalized, anachronism-infested biographical series with big Millennial energy ("Dickinson").
Green has since continued this trend of swerving from one type of storytelling to a radically different one with "The Exorcist: Believer" (read /Film's review), a legacy sequel to William Friedkin's Og "Exorcist" and the follow-up to Green's divisive "Halloween" trilogy. The Halloween (2018) episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written and Narrated by Jason Hewlett, Edited by Jaime Vasquez, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
When it comes to horror franchises the Halloween series is a bit like Chewbacca; it doesn’t make a lot of sense narratively unless you really understand what is going on. That’s right, you just heard a Star Wars reference in a video about a Halloween movie. Just roll with it… Technically the Halloween films are four different stories and one one-off tale told over the course of thirteen films, if my math is right away. Only one of these narrative shifts seems to have been done for creative reasons while the rest were undertaken in an effort to continue the series and make more money from the Halloween brand. If this sounds cynical to you,...

With its list of new releases for March 2023, Amazon Prime Video might be rolling out its most impressive monthly lineup yet.
We know that sounds like something straight out of a press release but in this case, it’s actually true! Prime Video, bless it, has some excellent original titles like The Boys and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, but its monthly release updates have often been less inspiring than its TV peers. That’s certainly not the case with March 2023 though.
Prime Video gets its streaming party started early by premiering the first three episodes of Daisy Jones & The Six on March 3. This series, based on a book of the same name, tells the fictional Behind the Music-esque story of an equally fictional band. Then, on March 17, Amazon’s partnership with Donald Glover bears its first fruit with the series about obsessive fandom called Swarm. Reggie Jackson documentary Reggie premieres...

March is still winter, no matter which animal you ask, which means it’s still completely acceptable to cancel all plans and curl up under a blanket in front of the TV. Prime Video’s movie library updates throughout the month, with most of its new additions on March 1 — including the “Rocky” saga, multiple “Carrie” adaptations, “12 Angry Men,” and more.
For Prime users who love books and TV, March means the highly-anticipated premiere of “Daisy Jones & the Six,” based on the best-selling novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid. The eponymous Daisy (Riley Keough) and Billy Dunne’s band (Sam Claflin) make a mean match, starting with a hit single and leading to what seems like endless fame and glory. But where there is success there is peril, and both the band’s rise and an electric connection with Daisy threaten Billy’s marriage and everyone’s personal lives. James Ponsoldt,...

Hulu is bringing two major TV titles to its stream this month. The first is The Orville: New Horizons on June 2. Now “New Horizons” promises to be a fresh start for the series on Hulu. Next up is Only Murders in the Building season 2 on June 28. Season 1 of this Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez-starring series was a big hit. Let’s see if our favorite podcasters can pull it off once again.

It’s blockbuster season and Amazon Prime is celebrating by bringing a major action film to its stream.
That’s right, Amazon Prime’s list of new releases for July 2021 is highlighted by none other than The Tomorrow War on July 2. The year is 2051 and mankind is locked in a vicious war against an alien species. Our only hope is to go back in time and find…Chris Pratt. Ok, perhaps that’s a little reductive of the film’s plot. Future humanity also comes back to bring Sam Richardson to the future.
In terms of originals, there isn’t much else to speak of on Amazon Prime this month. The only other major release is The Pursuit of Love on July 30. This BBC series is directed by Emily Mortimer and takes place during the WWII era and follows two cousins as they navigate their lives. Lily James and Andrew Scott star.

It’s safe to say that the Covid content drought is just about over. Netflix prides itself on being the most, let’s say, prolific streaming service in the game. With its list of new releases for May 2021 it’s once again revealing why.
There is a lot going on for Netflix this month and it all starts with some high profile original films. Zack Snyder’s latest zombie effort Army of the Dead premieres on May 21. That will be preceded by Monster, the adaptation of Walter Dean Myers’ classic YA book, on May 7 and Amy Adams Rear Window-esque The Woman in the Window on May 14.

The latest in our series of writers defending loathed films is a plea to reconsider David Gordon Green’s foul-mouthed fantasy adventure
In 2008, David Gordon Green surprised his modest but dedicated following by pivoting from Malickian post-industrial indie movies to Pineapple Express, a stoner buddy picture so indebted to cheeseball 80s action comedies that it commissioned its own Huey Lewis theme song. Far from a sellout, the movie still exhibited his sensibility, chasing humanist absurdities with unexpected violence, recalibrated for mainstream delight. Three years later, delight turned to alienation with his follow-up, Your Highness, a fantasy-spoof vehicle for Green’s longtime friend and collaborator Danny McBride. Critics cringed, audiences stayed away, and McBride’s career as a big-screen star was short-lived.

Three years ago, who would have thought that David Gordon Green would go from being the guy who directed episodes of “Red Oaks” and “Eastbound & Down,” as well as films like “Pineapple Express” and “Your Highness,” to one of the biggest names in horror. But then he combined with Blumhouse and released “Halloween” in 2018 and is finishing up two more sequels in that franchise, as well as developing a series remake of “Hellraiser.” And now, to top it all off, it appears like he might be tackling one of the biggest horror films of all-time, “The Exorcist.”

Thor: Love and Thunder hasn’t even started filming yet, but that won’t deter people from utilizing their creative talents to envision how the finished movie might look. As such, a new fan trailer has now imagined the storytelling tone that the pic may take.
The main selling point of the Odinson’s fourth solo outing is the return of Natalie Portman and the reintroduction of Jane Foster, along with the story somehow seeing her appropriate the Thunder God’s powers and rise as the Mighty Thor. Exactly how or why is yet to be alluded to in any official statement, but in the trailer’s judicious use of footage from The Dark World and Avengers: Endgame, it suggests that it has something to do with her bonding with the Aether in the former, perhaps some residue of its reality-warping power still remaining within her.

As we wade deeper into the uncertain waters of isolated living, the list of movies and TV shows you haven’t seen already may be starting to dwindle. But fear not, quarantine content consumers — HBO is out with its list of everything new coming to the streaming service in May, and there are lots of fresh options to keep you entertained this month.
Popular movies like “BlacKkKlansman,” “Crazy Rich Asians,” “Jaws” and “School of Rock” are all arriving Friday, May 1. Plus, the director’s cut of “Little Shop of Horrors,” “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” and “The Art of Getting By,” to name a few.
TV shows arriving throughout the month include the premiere of limited series “I Know This Much Is True” starring Mark Ruffalo, out May 10, and the season finale of HBO’s dark comedy “Run” starring Merritt Wever and Domhnall Gleeson, out May 24.

May isn’t quite summer yet but it is usually time that the networks start wrapping up their newest shows and preparing for a relatively fallow summer period. Since HBO isn’t a network, it has no such business model. But May sees the winding down of some HBO blockbusters all the same.
While there are some notable new releases for HBO in May 2020, the bigger story might be the things that are ending. Westworld concludes its third season on May 3 while new series Run wraps up on May 24. Thankfully the film losses in May aren’t too bad for HBO, unless the Agent Cody Banks saga drives a lot of traffic.
The most notable TV premiere in May is I Know This Much is True, a book adaptation starring Mark Ruffalo. This is a very bleak story coming along at a bleak time in history but perhaps those two things will cancel out.

After catching his big break in Hollywood directing stoner comedies Pineapple Express and Your Highness, David Gordon Green has spent the last decade branching out as a filmmaker, moving into drama with the likes of Joe and Stronger before pivoting into horror with his reinvention of the Halloween franchise alongside Danny McBride, with the duo’s venture into uncharted territory resulting in the most successful outing for Michael Myers yet.
Green and McBride are currently hard at work on sequel Halloween Kills, before moving straight onto their trilogy-closer Halloween Ends, but it looks like they’ll be staying in the horror genre for a while yet, with the news that Green has signed on to direct the pilot episode of HBO’s Hellraiser series, as well as serving as an executive producer with McBride as part of their Rough House Pictures Banner.

It used to be that ‘remake’ was something of a dirty word in horror after audiences were bombarded with substandard do-overs at the start of the 2000s
But despite early cynicism David Gordon Green’s new take on John Carpenter’s seminal stalk ‘n slash was well received by fans and critics alike and did great box office. So when it was announced that Halloween 2018 would form part of a trilogy with Halloween Kills coming in 2020 and Halloween Ends to follow in 2021 we were basically ok with that. Proving that no feature film is immune to the Honest Trailers treatment, the good folks over at Screen Junkies have turned their attention to Halloween, the 2018 sequel from Blumhouse and director David Gordon Green.
By and large, Michael Myers’ long-anticipated return was a resounding success, given Halloween earned rave reviews and a healthy $253 million at the global box office. It’s not enough to set the world on fire, but for an R-rated trip down memory lane, Green’s sequel ticked all the right boxes – that is, until Screen Junkies claimed their next victim as part of the ongoing (and frankly hilarious) Honest Trailers video series.
Here’s a snippet:
After nine sequels and reboots that ranged from ‘meh’ to ‘please kill meh’, only one creative team can restore the Halloween franchise to its former glory: Kenny Powers and the director of Your Highness.

With a filmography that ranges from indie dramas like George Washington and Joe to comedies like Pineapple Express and Your Highness, the career of David Gordon Green didn’t exactly hold much precedent for the slasher movie territory he ventured into with Halloween. But over the course of 15 years and multiple projects, the director claims to have kept one death scene in mind should the opportunity ever arise to give the horror genre a try.
In a bonus featurette from the film’s upcoming home release, Green reveals that his personal favorite death scene was the sad demise of Oscar (Drew Scheid), with the director recalling in a newly released clip how he’d envisioned this death by impalement on an iron fence long before he started work on Halloween:
“I’ve thought for over a decade that if I ever made a horror movie, I would have to include that moment.

Luca Guadagnino. Image courtesy of Mubi.Born in Palermo, Sicily, to Italian/Algerian parents, Luca Guadagnino reckons if he hadn’t become a critically acclaimed, award-winning director/producer/screenwriter, his career would probably have revolved around fashion, interior design or historical research. In fact, all of the obsessions that have clearly added to the artistic textures and detailed truths perceived in his eclectic work to date that have made them so remarkable. From his debut crime thriller The Protagonists (1999), the first of five films to star Tilda Swinton, who many call his "muse," to the incisive paean Bertolucci on Bertolucci, Guadagnino has dug deep into the human emotional and identity landscapes while never forfeiting the lush style or delicate sensuality each of his subjects, both real and imaginary, bring to the aesthetic table. After working diligently in both the feature film and documentary arenas Guadagnino’s big-time breakout came with...

But who could possibly play Coach? Just last week we were treated to a new promo spot for DC's upcoming SyFy series Krypton. I'm actually kind of excited about this series because it deals with Kal-El's family history on the planet Krypton. This is an aspect of the Superman mythology that we've never really seen played with before.
Today we've learned from KryptonSite that the series will premiere in March of 2018 and they also revealed a new synopsis that has been released, and what's interesting about it is that it hints at a time travel plot device:
"Set two generations before the destruction of Superman’s home planet, Krypton follows Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe), the legendary Man of Steel’s grandfather — whose House of El was ostracized and shamed. With Krypton’s leadership in disarray, Seg-El encounters Earthly time-traveler Adam Strange (Shaun Sipos) who warns he’s under the clock to save his beloved world from chaos.

It’s been a long time coming, but Syfy has finally narrowed Krypton‘s premiere window to March of 2018.
At least, that’s according to a report unearthed by KryptonSite (with a tip of the hat to ComicBook.com). Sadly, there’s no mention of a concrete premiere date just yet, but we do have a new and indeed extended synopsis for you to peruse, which tees up a superheroic family drama anchored by Cameron Cuffe as Seg-El, Kal-El’s grandfather.
If you’ve been keeping tracking of Krypton‘s prolonged development cycle, you’ll know that the freshman drama has been angled as a prequel series, one that will seemingly “branch time and space.” There’s also a new interpretation of Brainiac to look forward to, considering Blake Ritson has been cast as the “parasitic, hyper-advanced alien android of immense intelligence.”

David Gordon Green drifts yet further from his Pineapple Express and Your Highness frat comedy legacy with this safe and reverent adaptation of the true-life story of Jeff Bauman, a young Bostonian who lost his legs in the marathon bombing of 2013. You may not be familiar with the tale, but the film’s title will give you an idea of the direction of travel.
