Almost immediately, their childlike curiosity gets the better of them and upon opening the box, they find a bunch of live, psychedelic Sonoran “acid” toads. When the toads begin to overheat, the duo make an ill-advised attempt at mouth-to-mouth, thereby dosing themselves with extreme amounts of the toads’ psychedelic secretion.

Although Sebastian Stan made his first onscreen appearance in Michael Haneke‘s 1994 drama 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance, his acting career kicked into high gear in the 2000s with a recurring role on Gossip Girl. But it was the part of Bucky Barnes, a plucky WWII veteran turned brainwashed assassin in Marvel’s Captain America and its sequel, The Winter Soldier, that made him a star. Stan has played Barnes, aka The Winter Soldier, throughout eight films and counting, yet that’s far from the extent of his acting career.

There have been a number of different kinds of movie time machines — from phone booths, to ancient Japanese scepters, to a cocaine trafficker’s wacky sports car. But it wasn’t until 2010 that a character broke the time barrier using a magical jacuzzi.

Hot Tub Time Machine was a goofy, but mostly enjoyable comedy that found John Cusack, Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson and Clark Duke traveling back in time to the 1980s. At least it nailed the complex nature of meddling with the timeline in a way that few other time-travel films do.

Because it was a modest success, Hot Tub Time Machine spawned a sequel. And it’s not great. In fact, it’s quite bad. Even John Cusack didn’t want to return for Hot Tub Time Machine 2, and that guy once made a movie in which cell phone signals turn people into telepathic zombies.

But Hot Tub Time Machine 2...

Balance isn't just something that martial arts virtuoso Mr. Miyagi likes to harp about to his students in the "Karate Kid" franchise; it's also crucial to what makes the property tick. Director John G. Avildsen and writer Robert Mark Kamen's original 1984 "Karate Kid" film established the template for the movies and shows that followed, mixing the gritty realism of Avildsen's other sports classic, "Rocky," with lively martial arts fights and borderline cartoonish antagonists. At their best, these tales of troubled, scrappy teenage underdogs studying karate under the tutelage of Miyagai and his disciples are rousing coming-of-age sagas capable of presenting heavy subject matter in a crowd-pleasing package. At their worst, they still offer invaluable life lessons, even when they veer into the realm of self-parody.

George Folsey Jr., a famous film editor and director known for his work on classic comedies like “Animal House” and “Coming to America,” has died at 84. His son, Ryan Foley, who is also a film editor, told everyone that he had died.

Over more than fifty years, Folsey Jr. had a very successful career in Hollywood. People knew him best for working with director John Landis for a long time. Major hits like “The Kentucky Fried Movie” (1977), “National Lampoon’s Animal House” (1978), and “The Blues Brothers” (1980) were produced as a result of their collaboration, which started with Landis’s 1973 film “Schlock.” During the 1970s and 1980s, they helped shape American humor.

George Folsey Jr, the veteran film editor and producer who worked closely with John Landis on movies including Animal House, The Blues Brothers, Coming to America and the ill-fated Twilight Zone: The Movie as well as the iconic music video for Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” has died. He was 85.

The news was confirmed Wednesday by his son, fellow editor Ryan Folsey, on social media.

Folsey Jr was the son of George Folsey, the 13-time Oscar-nominated cinematographer whose credits included Meet Me In St. Louis, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Executive Suite and The Balcony.

George Folsey Jr., the veteran film editor behind classic films such as “Coming to America” and “Animal House,” died Dec. 29. He was 84.

Variety learned the news from Folsey Jr.’s son Ryan Folsey, who is also an editor. Folsey Jr. was the son of cinematographer George J. Folsey.

Folsey Jr. collaborated frequently with director John Landis. Over the course of his five-decade career, he went on to edit or co-edit a total of six of Landis’s films which included “Schlock,” “The Blues Brothers” and “Coming to America.”

Furthermore, Folsey Jr. worked with the “Burke and Hare” filmmaker as a second unit director on “Trading Places,” “Into the Night” and “Three Amigos.”

Some of his other editing credits include the “Michael Jackson: Thriller” music video, “Hot Tub Time Machine,” “Clarity,” “Wolf Mountain,” “Just Swipe,” “Summer Rain,” “Despair,” “Freeloaders,” “Chain of Command” and “My Sister.”

The Cobra Kai creator also worked on a time travel movie franchise that has gotten some recent news. The show is co-created by Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg. Cobra Kai is a Karate Kid spinoff TV series about Daniel Larusso and Johnny Lawrence becoming martial-arts rivals again years later. It has done very well during its tenure on Netflix so far, where it has had five completed seasons. The last third of Cobra Kai season 6 is set for release on Netflix next year.

All three of its creators have also had careers outside of Cobra Kai, though the Netflix series is arguably their biggest show. All three of them worked on a raunchy comedy series called Obliterated, which was unfortunately nixed by Netflix after a single season. The Weymouth, Massachusetts native and Upright Citizens Brigade alum was the co-creator EP, writer and star of Adult Swim’s long-running comedy series, Childrens Hospital on which he played Dr. Blake Downs, Flake the Clown and Rory Spindell. Corddry took home four Emmy wins on the show for Best Actor in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series and Outstanding Short Form Comedy or Drama Series in 2016, and 2012 and 2013 wins for Outstanding Special Class – Short-Format Live-Action Entertainment Programs. Childrens Hospital ran for 87 episodes.

Deadline can reveal The Last Republican, the documentary about Kinzinger directed by Steve Pink, will get a week-long Oscar-qualifying run in Los Angeles beginning November 22, accompanied by special screenings in New York, San Francisco, and additional theaters across Los Angeles.

The Exchange is launching worldwide sales on the movie at the upcoming American Film Market. The sales deal was negotiated by Brian O’Shea on behalf of The Exchange and by Lastine Entertainment Lawon behalf of the filmmakers.

Sebastian Stan recently revealed that he came close to landing the role of Captain James T. Kirk in director J.J. Abrams' 2009 Star Trek reboot. The casting process for Kirk was under a considerable amount of scrutiny at the time, considering how iconic William Shatner's portrayal of Kirk was. The coveted role would eventually go to Chris Pine, which catapulted the actor into stardom. Stan would find massive success two years later with his role as 'Bucky Barnes' in Captain America: The First Avenger.

Rob Corddry has been promoted to series regular status for Season 2 of the Max comedy series “Bookie.” Corddry appeared in Season 1 of the Chuck Lorre series in the guest role of Walt Dinty.

Season 2 of “Bookie” is set to debut on the streamer in December. Corddry joins fellow returning cast members Sebastian Maniscalco, Omar J. Dorsey, Jorge Garcia, Andrea Anders, Vanessa Ferlito and Maxim Swinton.

Initially, “Hot Tub Time Machine” director Steve Pink wasn’t sure about making “The Last Republican,” a documentary about former U.S. Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger. As a self-professed far-left progressive, Pink didn’t know if Kinzinger, a conservative whose efforts to hold Donald Trump accountable for the Jan. 6 insurrection, was a worthy doc subject.

“The thought was that we are both from Illinois, so that was cool and we both have a Midwestern orientation, but I just couldn’t imagine a single thing I would agree with him on, except for this one thing, which was clearly that something new was happening here in American life where the nature of our democracy was and is being questioned,” says Pink.

Adam Kinzinger had turned down more than a dozen requests to make a documentary. Then the director of Hot Tub Time Machine walked in.

The Illinois Republican congressman who famously — and largely solitarily — turned on Donald Trump after Jan. 6 was reluctant to participate in a movie that focused on his fading hopes to retain his seat. But Steve Pink, the aforesaid auteur of the jacuzzi, wanted to get more personal than that.

“Everyone else was interested in re-election,” Kinzinger said in an interview with THR as the Toronto International Film Festival was set to start Thursday. “But when I talked to Steve and the team their interest was in the human element — what’s the cost to you and your future kid?”

That conversation was more than two years ago. Now the resulting film, The Last Republican, could make an impact on more than just Kinzinger when it premieres at TIFF 2024 on Saturday.

It’s a sign of the truly bizarre political times in which we live that the new documentary about former Illinois congressman Adam Kinzinger was made not by any of the usual filmmaking suspects. The Last Republican, receiving its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, wasn’t helmed by, say, Michael Moore, Errol Morris, or Barbara Kopple, but rather Steve Pink. It only makes sense when you find out that one of Pink’s previous directorial efforts, Hot Tub Time Machine, is Kinzinger’s favorite film. “It’s the thing that sold me,” Kinzinger jokingly comments, well aware of the director’s ultra-liberal leanings. “You have contempt for what I believe, in terms of political viewpoints,” he acknowledges.

A profile of the late Irish literary giant Edna O’Brien and a story about the haenyeo fisherwomen of South Korea are among the 21 TIFF Docs selections unveiled by Toronto International Film Festival on Wednesday.

Joining Sinéad O’Shea’s Blue Road - The Edna O’Brien Story and Sue Kim’s The Last Of The Sea Women are Men Of War, an exploration of a failed coup in Venezuela from the team behind Cocaine Cowboys, and The Last Republican from Hot Tub Time Machine director Steve Pink, who looks at how former Congressman Adam Kinzinger broke ranks and stood up to Donald Trump.

Documentaries about the rise and fall of media company Vice, former Republican U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger and disability rights activist Patrice Jetter are heading to the Toronto Film Festival.

TIFF’s Docs program gets underway Sept. 5 and will feature 21 nonfiction films from 24 countries. The program will open with the world premiere of Eddie Huang’s “Vice Is Broke,” an investigation into the once high-flying digital news outlet that filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last year after boasting a valuation of $5.7 billion in 2017.

Nonfiction films about conflicts in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan and Venezuela, as well as documentaries about politician Adam Kinzinger, Irish writer Edna O’Brien and disability rights activist Patrice Jetter will screen at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, event organizers announced on Wednesday.

TIFF’s Docs program will consist of 21 films, two-thirds of them world premieres and 16 of them available for distribution. “The lineup is like holding up a mirror to what’s going on in the world today, which includes a lot of different things,” TIFF documentary programmer Thom Powers told TheWrap.

The opening night film will be Eddie Huang’s “Vice Is Broke,” in which the former Vice host details the rise and fall of that media organization.

Ex-gop Congressman Adam Kinzinger, a prominent critic of Donald Trump, will get a major platform at the Toronto International Film Festival just weeks before the U.S. presidential election.
