Zack Snyder is most decidedly a divisive filmmaker, but a very popular one at that. From his feature directorial debut, a remake of George A. Romero's zombie classic "Dawn of the Dead," to the complicated DC epic that was "Justice League," he's never been afraid to do the unsafe thing, for better or worse. So, what does a director like that enjoy watching? What are the movies Snyder looks to for inspiration?
Around the time that "Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire" was debuting on Netflix in late 20223, Snyder spoke with Letterboxd and shared his four favorite movies of all time. First and foremost, without hesitation, Snyder listed George Lucas' seminal sci-fi classic "Star Wars: A New Hope" as his favorite movie. Here's what he had to say about it:

With Twilight of the Gods unleashing Zack Snyder's Norse mythology retelling onto Netflix, his new animated series has garnered higher praise and a greater Rotten Tomatoes score than most of the Rebel Moon franchise. The animated series focuses on a half-giant who embarks on a brutal quest for vengeance against the Gods after her family are murdered on her wedding day. Twilight of the Gods features an all-star cast including Sylvia Hoeks, Stuart Martin, Rahul Kohli, Paterson Joseph, Pilou Asbaek, and John Noble as many of Norse mythology's most well-known figures, including Thor, Loki, and Odin.
While Twilight of the Gods has been a hit with audiences, its critical response has also led to a unique situation for the director on Rotten Tomatoes. There are certain in-jokes among us chronically online film enthusiasts that'll probably get you strange looks if you crack 'em devoid of context in the real world. Take Zack Snyder's "Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole," an animated fantasy epic that made $139.7 million at the box office, yet, as the internet's running gag goes, nobody has actually seen. Then there's /Film's own recurring bit of referring to Mark Wahlberg as a hamburger salesman, which is more factual that you may've realized. However, if you really want to baffle impress your normie pals with your deep-cut knowledge of niche social media humor, all you need to do is applaud Emma Stone for her representation of the Asian-American community.
To clarify for all you fine folks who've no idea what I'm talking about -- this now nine-year-old punchline involving the "Superbad" veteran was birthed by Cameron Crowe's controversial bomb "Aloha.

Ah, the fall. In the words of the great philosopher Calvin, "Bugs are dying by the truckload! Ha ha ha! Good riddance to 'em all!" We've still a few weeks left of summer on the calendar, but the days are already getting shorter and dead, crunchy leaves have suddenly begun turning up in my backyard. More relevant to this discussion, it's that time of year when Netflix's original slate typically becomes a whole lot more interesting. This is when the streamer starts rolling out the awards season hopefuls it acquired at film festivals earlier in the year, along with some of its more niche genre films and TV series.

Zack Snyder’s Last Five Films At The Box Office(Photo Credit –Instagram)
Arguably one of the most prominent directors in Hollywood, Zack Snyder has defined DC films for nearly a decade. After joining the DC cinematic universe with 2009’s Watchmen, Snyder has helmed some blockbuster hits in the superhero genre. However, in 2017, Zack Snyder pulled out of Justice League, leaving post-production duties and reshoots to Joss Whedon after a family tragedy.
Between 2010 and 2024, Snyder has directed nine films. His four films in the years since he left Justice League have gone straight to the streamer. Five years ago, at the onset of the pandemic, Netflix bet big on Zack Snyder after they acquired his zombie project Army of the Dead (2021), which garnered some decent reviews and won the Oscars Fan Favorite award in 2022.

For a good while now, Zack Snyder has been teasing his harder-edged cut of Rebel Moon – a more uncompromising version of his Seven Samurai-inspired sci-fi saga, filled with the sort of blood and gore that has characterised much of his other works. The filmmaker was open with his plans on Netflix – to first release a family-friendly-ish Part One and Part Two, before delivering a new version for older audiences that lets his darker instincts fly. Now, we’ve got our first proper look at exactly what that means – and the trailer for Rebel Moon – The Director’s Cut (aka Chapter One – Chalice Of Blood and Chapter Two – Curse Of Forgiveness) certainly doesn’t hold back on the slow-mo blood splatter. Watch it here:

"The want war – I will give it to them." Netflix has revealed a very short teaser trailer first look at the new animated series called Twilight of the Gods, the next Zack Snyder creation for the streaming network. He has been developing this in tandem with the Rebel Moon movies, another animated offering much like with his previous Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole movie (2010). The series is inspired by Norse Mythology. The Twilight of the Gods refers events that led to the destruction of Midgard and Asgard, then the death of most of the Æsir and Vanir gods in an ultimate battle against evil, the forces of nature and the Giants. From Stone Quarry Animation working with Xilam Animation. The new series brings Snyder's "daring & spectacular vision" of ancient Norse mythology to life, and features the voices of Sylvia Hoeks, Stuart Martin, Pilou Asbaek, John Noble,...

Zack Snyder touched down at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on Wednesday to offer a sneak peak of his upcoming Norse mythology animated series Twilight of the Gods as part of the Next at Netflix showcase.
Aside from the 2010 animated fantasy adventure Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole, the Justice League director has worked mainly in live action across his career.
Snyder suggested the process of developing an animation was similar in many ways to that of setting up an action film.
“We do a lot of drawings, and I do love the process before shooting, storyboarding and layout and all that. I like that part of the process when I make a live action film,” he said.
One advantage of animation he suggested was that the director had more direct control over what ended up on the screen.

Update: Netflix has unveiled a new teaser for the show, so you can see some of it in action for yourselves. Our original article continues below.
If nothing else, Zack Snyder has a distinct style. Much like Michael Bay, you can recognize a Snyder film the moment you watch it. Whether you clock his use of slow motion, his eye for striking imagery and poses, or his slick action, Snyder's background in music video directing means he knows how to craft memorable images in a short amount of time with limited resources.
This is to say, Zack Snyder was always meant to work in animation. Say what you will about his owl movie, which no one saw, but "Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole" showed this, with fantastic visuals that matched Snyder's narrative obsession with myth-making.
Now, he's getting another chance at it, with "Twilight of the Gods.

Attendees at Netflix’s presentation for the Annecy Animation Festival got exclusive glimpses at footage from Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl and Zack Snyder’s Twilight of the Gods, among other forthcoming animated projects heading to the streamer.
Snyder and producing partner Deborah Snyder took the stage to share sequences from their animated series that is inspired by Norse mythology and hits Netflix on Sept. 19. This included footage of a dragon battle that involved copious amounts of blood.
“[It’s] shocking for me that the main characters form a team,” Zack Snyder quipped about Twilight of the Gods, given the similar themes from his previous work that includes 300, Watchmen and Justice League. He jokingly added, “I can’t wait to do a single character.”
Snyder, who previously directed the animated feature Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole, explained that his process for animation doesn’t differ greatly from how he typically works.

When we think of Zack Snyder, our minds might automatically soar to his superhero epics like Man of Steel or Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. But did you know there were two other ambitious projects that, despite Snyder’s imaginative touch, ended up being even bigger financial hurdles for Warner Bros?
Yes, we’re talking about the aesthetically stunning yet underrated Legends of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole (2010) and the stylistically bold Sucker Punch (2011).

Is there any current director who is more controversial than Zack Snyder? It’s wild how divisive a figure he is, with his fans nearly cult-like in their devotion, while his detractors are just as fervent. Here at JoBlo, we’ve always been ardent supporters, even if we haven’t unquestioningly praised all of his films. Thus, we thought it would be interesting to do an all-around ranking of his films (although we’ve left the animated Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole off the list). So, without further ado, here’s our ranking from worst to best.
Sucker Punch:
I’ll admit to not knowing precisely what Snyder was trying to pull off when I saw this movie in 2011. It remains the most obscure of his live-action films. It is a tough nut to crack, being that it’s a fantastical, hyper-surrealistic fantasy centred around a woman...

Rebel Moon 2's Rotten Tomatoes Score Reveals A Harsh Reality For Zack Snyder's Entire 20-Year Career

Rebel Moon 2: The Scargiver's abysmal Rotten Tomatoes score reveals a sad truth about Zack Snyder's filmography. Dawn of the Dead remains Snyder's best-rated film, showing a decline in quality over the years. Splitting Rebel Moon into two parts hurt its critical reception due to lack of depth and character investment.
The abysmal Rotten Tomatoes score for Zack Snyders latest opus, Rebel Moon Part Two: The Scargiver, reveals a sad truth about the polarizing directors entire filmography. The first two-part Rebel Moon movie was supposed to launch a massive sci-fi franchise that would continue for at least another two two-parters, resulting in a trilogy that would bafflingly consist of six movies. However, after the first part was widely panned by critics and the second part was met with an even worse reception, it seems unlikely that this six-part Rebel Moon trilogy will come to fruition.

When asking viewers to list the qualities that best characterize a Zack Snyder film, ‘slow motion’ is probably going to be mentioned nine times out of ten. Rebel Moon, his 2023 American epic space opera flick, is probably well-known to those who enjoy visually stunning stories and epic action sequences. In addition, if you have watched the movie, you might have noticed the unusual use of ‘slow motion’.
Naturally, the renowned filmmaker is well aware of that, and during an interview with Wired, he discussed why and how he approaches those kinds of scenes and the kinds of rules he sets for himself and his team while filming.

Few modern blockbuster filmmakers draw as sharply divided reactions from critics and general audiences as Zack Snyder. For every review that praises Snyder’s remarkable ability to create grand, fantastical visual imagery on film, there will be another review criticizing the filmmaker’s overreliance on slow motion and weak plot points. Let us take a look at Snyder’s filmography, and the critical reaction to his works as determined by Rotten Tomatoes.
Dawn of the Dead (2004), Tomatometer: 76% Zombies attack in Dawn of the Dead
Zack Snyder‘s maiden effort as a director remains his most critically successful venture. In 2004, Zack Snyder presented the world with his dramatic reimagining of George Romero’s classic horror tale of a zombie invasion. The slick, visually compelling action scenes coupled with a strong screenplay by James Gunn help elevate the film above your run-of-the-mill horror remakes.
Dawn of the Dead is now available for streaming on Starz.

You know that famous quote commonly attributed to Alexander the Great about how he wept when there were no more worlds to conquer? We're starting to think that Zack Snyder feels much the same way, except that his version of conquering the world is more about finding ways to re-release his movies with extra footage attached at all costs.
To be fair, this isn't exactly a new phenomenon for Snyder. His 2004 "Dawn of the Dead" reboot eventually led to an unrated cut down the line and his comic book movie "Watchmen" ended up with several different versions post-release. He pulled the same trick once again with both "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" and, most infamously, his "Zack Snyder's Justice League" experiment that resulted in a completely different movie altogether compared to the theatrical cut. Directors like Tim Burton and Wes Anderson excel at directing animated films because their distinct artistic styles translate flawlessly between mediums. Some directors can only bring their desired stories to life through animation, which allows for versatility and recognition among audiences. Animated films directed by renowned live-action directors can be a refreshing departure from their usual style and can receive critical acclaim and awards.
Occasionally, directors who are known for their work on live-action sets will switch things up and direct an animated film or two. He might not get his wish, but Zack Snyder is keen to shoot more footage for a Sucker Punch do-over.
I know one person precisely who’s a massive fan of Zack Snyder’s 2011 movie Sucker Punch. I know lots of people who are, well, less keen.
Amongst the many films that Snyder has made, it’s the one that’s got the worse reviews (now that Justice League has been sorted out anyway). It’s also the one that’s hit the most disappointing levels at the box office too. You could be forgiven for thinking that Zack Snyder would just walk away from it, and get on with his myriad of other projects.
But that, chums, is not the Zack Snyder way. His new films, the two Rebel Moon movies, are arriving with extended cuts pretty much built in. Now, he’s talking about Sucker Punch also getting a revisit.

Zack Snyder's decision to release shorter, PG-13 versions of his Rebel Moon movies makes sense considering his history of releasing extended cuts of his films and the larger context of director's cuts. Rebel Moon: A Child of Fire and Rebel Moon: The Scargiver will receive longer director's cuts, adding 45 minutes to an hour of extra content to each film. Planning multiple versions of a movie for different viewing experiences is not uncommon, as seen in the Extended Editions of The Lord of the Rings. Releasing director's cuts of Rebel Moon provides more options for audiences and benefits Netflix.
Zack Snyder is famous for his extra-long R-rated director's cuts, so some have been confused by his decision to release a shorter, PG-13 versions of his Rebel Moon movies to Netflix first. While the situation may seem different to some of Snyder's other director's cuts, it actually makes a lot of...

Some directors, like Guy Ritchie and Tim Burton, have struggled when deviating from their signature genres, resulting in critical and commercial failures. Filmmakers such as M. Night Shyamalan and David Lynch have had major missteps with their attempts at different styles, with their films being widely panned. Even highly acclaimed directors like Spike Lee and Francis Ford Coppola have had disappointing ventures outside their usual genres, often due to the challenges of remaking successful foreign films or taking on unconventional projects.
Some directors who switched styles for a new movie managed to deliver surprisingly great films, but for others, moving away from their signature cinematic language did not quite work. Very few directors have been able to have versatile careers, with most finding success in a specific category and sticking with it. Filmmakers like Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg have managed to deliver masterpieces in multiple genres, but this is a rare accomplishment.

Trigger Warning. This article mentions suicide.
Zack Snyder has long since put the Dcu behind him, and it is time audiences follow suit and forget about the return of the SnyderVerse. Since the release of Man of Steel in 2013, Snyder has been synonymous with the films of the Dceu. However, with James Gunn and Peter Safran moving towards a complete Dcu reboot, the decade-long legacy of Snyder with DC will be erased.
However, Zack Snyder effectively left the so-called "SnyderVerse" behind in 2017 after the tragic suicide of his daughter Autumn. He only briefly returned in 2021 to release Zack Snyder's Justice League as fan service for those upset with Joss Whedon's cut of the film. Despite campaigns from fans to get the SnyderVerse back on track, Synder has since put those days behind him.

One can say a lot of things about director Zack Snyder, the filmmaker behind "Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole" and "300," but he can never be accused of working small. Snyder has made a métier out of turning schlocky, action-packed fantasy entertainments into outsized, ponderous, navel-gazing four-hour bouts of grandiloquent bombast. Snyder is the credited director on four interconnected films in Warner Bros.' DC comics film series, and served as executive producer on five others in the same series. His films tend to be...

His cut of the Superman movie was the blockbuster hit of the pandemic – and now he’s back with more snazzily-shot zombies in Army of the Dead. What would you ask the director behind DC’s finest?
In next Friday’s Guardian, Zack Snyder – one of the most successful and sometimes most polarising directors of the modern age – will be answering questions from friends, peers and Guardian readers.
That’s where you come in. What would you ask the man who directed Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole and Sucker Punch as well as DC whoppers such as Watchmen, 300, Man of Steel, Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice?...

Two things that Zack Snyder very clearly loves are genre films and expansive mythologies. Indeed, at this stage of his career, it seems pretty unlikely that you’ll find him directing a low budget drama or a straightforward crime thriller, with his entire filmography characterized by flashy visuals and fantastical narratives.
Snyder’s upcoming Netflix original Army of the Dead marks his second foray into zombie territory, while the rest of his output is comprised of five comic book adaptations, animated family film Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole, which was based on a book series, and psychological fantasy blockbuster Sucker Punch. In fact, Army of the Dead is just his second ever movie based on an original concept after the latter, and his first in a decade.
The 54 year-old is known for crafting intricate and complex universes around his films, and his latest effort looks to be no different.

Lord knows filmmaker Zack Snyder has a) been working on the zombie movie “Army Of The Dead” for what feels like an exorbitantly long time and b) has a checkered history with working with Warner Bros. — though to be fair, they were extremely on #TeamSnyder for several years, giving him “Man Of Steel,” and the keys to the Dceu universe even after expensive flops like “Suckerpunch,” and the underperforming “Guardians of Ga’Hoole” and “Watchmen.”

Zack Snyder has directed eight movies during his career, with the ninth arriving this year when zombie heist actioner Army of the Dead hits Netflix, and so far he’s revisited five of them. Indeed, Snyder seems to have the Ridley Scott problem, where he can’t leave any of his films alone for too long before diving back in to make some alterations.
His debut feature Dawn of the Dead was given a Director’s Cut that ran for ten minutes longer, his preferred version of Watchmen added an extra 24 minutes of footage, and the Ultimate Cut is the lengthiest comic book movie ever made at a butt-numbing 216 minutes. Sucker Punch, meanwhile, arrived on home video bundled with an Extended Cut, the Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice Ultimate Edition runs for an extra half an hour and is vastly superior to the theatrical release, and there’s also...

Zack Snyder has always been a filmmaker with R-rated sensibilities, and if you want to split hairs, then just two of his seven movies to date are what you would call family-friendly outings. The animated Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole is the only one of his directorial efforts rated PG, while Man of Steel was slapped with a PG-13 for ‘intense sequences of sci-fi violence, action and destruction, and for some language.’
Snyder has basically disowned the theatrical cut of Justice League, which pretty much makes it a Joss Whedon film, while his preferred vision for both Sucker Punch and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice yielded extended editions that were R-rated and vastly superior. Add that to the Dawn of the Dead remake, 300, Watchmen and the expectations that his upcoming Netflix zombie heist actioner Army of the Dead will follow suit, and you can clearly...

Following on from a July where they added a large number of horror titles to their catalogue, Hulu have now made available even more great outings from the genre. As with all the major streaming players, keeping subscribers happy with new content during this Covid-19 year has been crucial, especially given the new competitors that have sprung up in recent months, further splintering film rights. Hulu are usually pretty reliable in terms of diversity, though, and have added some particularly strong horror titles for August.
Among the highlights for new movies is the original 1988 Child’s Play, which introduced the murderous Chucky to the world in a film that arguably remains the high-point of the franchise. A reasonably realistic setting, a convincing child performance and some excellent effects work make Child’s Play a classic of the period and more than worth a rewatch. We’re only just over halfway through July, but let’s hop ahead a couple of weeks into the future and take a look at what’s coming to Hulu in August. Next month will see the streaming service add an enormous list of movies and TV shows, with numerous classics amongst them, and everyone from horror to action to romance fans and even family audiences should be pleased with what’s coming.
The first day of the month, for example, brings the opening installments in two major horror franchises that kicked off in the late 80s – 1987’s Hellraiser and 1988’s Child’s Play. Sticking with the 80s, August 1st likewise sees 1986’s Top Gun added to the library, too. Not to mention 1981’s My Bloody Valentine.

If you were concerned about there being a content drought in August due to the coronavirus pandemic shutting down Hollywood, you were…absolutely right in those concerns.
For its new releases in August 2020, Hulu is following Apple, Disney, and even Peacock’s lead in taking things nice and slowly. The vast majority of the notable offerings here are of the library variety. Hulu adds classic movies like Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Rain Man, and Top Gun on August 1. Those go along with the very much still-holds-up Casino Royale on August 31.
Hulu also has room for some interesting recent indie movies like Ordinary Love (Aug. 3) and Peanut Butter Falcon (Aug. 6). But when it comes to Hulu original content there’s not much going on. The unheralded Find Me in Paris debuts its third season on August 21. That is followed by original comedy The Binge on August 28. And that’s about it!

New year, and a host of new Netflix additions to match.
While subscribers are currently mourning the loss of Friends – after going dark today, January 1st, the beloved sitcom won’t be available until HBO Max arrives in May – Netflix has today rolled out a bevy of fresh TV shows and movies to keep us entertained, including some truly unmissable horror properties.
From Event Horizon to Cloverfield, The Amityville Horror to the Tremors franchise, Netflix’s horror category has officially been restocked. There’s plenty to choose from, too, including the 2002 rendition of The Ring, which only makes us long for a competent retelling of the Japanese horror legend to right the wrongs of Rings (2017).
At least we have the upcoming Grudge reboot to look forward to on Friday (or January 24th if you happen to be located in the United Kingdom).

Superhero television is legitimately back on the CW. Yes, Marvel’s Agent Carter is also back and doing okay in the excitement department (and meta references thanks to Howard Stark’s Kid Colt movie), and Supergirl is chugging along with her morality tales through the lens of a soap opera, but it’s the CW slate that is still the most risky and comic-book-like in its execution.
There are occasionally runs in print comics where a character or crossover event is enough up my alley that each week finds me buying multiple books to keep up. Thankfully (for my wallet) these events are fewer and less complex than they were back in the early ‘90s. It used to be I had to follow the Trial of Peter Parker through four different Spider-Man books for each installment, now I’m following nine part Secret Wars books, but mostly accepting whatever...

Before going into The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones earlier this week I searched all over to find out if it was in 3D. It wasn't, but why wouldn't it bec It costs just a few million extra to post-convert and then you can price gouge the consumer under the lie 3D makes the experience better when in fact it just makes the picture blurry and requires special glasses to make sure it's in focus. I've seen only a few films where I can say the 3D had any effect on the viewing experience. Hubble 3D in IMAX was amazing, the 3D animation in Zack Snyder's Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole was impressive even though the movie stunk, I actually thought some of the helicopter shots in World War Z were quite impressive and Avatar had its moments. Overall, though, you could get rid of 3D...
