Disney did just that on Wednesday, announcing that its Disney Advertising subsidiary had performed a comprehensive count of the company’s ad-supported streaming subscribers around the world. The total is over 150 million, an impressive figure when comparing it to other services like Netflix.

Costs for ad-free streaming have risen precipitously in recent years, and audiences are growing more accustomed to watching commercials.

New data from Hub Research shows that ad tolerance is continuing to grow, especially among viewers of live TV programming.

Key Details: Hub found that 66% of viewers say they’d rather put up with ads if it means saving $4 to $5 per month. The same percentage say that ads during live TV are more tolerable than ads during on-demand programs. Viewers say earning rewards for watching ads would make them more likely to pay attention to them.

They can help convince viewers who have been using — but not paying for — a particular service to bite the bullet and sign up themselves, lest they lose access to their favorite shows and movies. Disney is one of the latest companies to begin enforcing rules against password sharing on its streamers, and the company’s chief financial officer Hugh Johnston said that everything is going well on that front thus far.

The general consensus among streaming analysts is that there’s simply not that much growth to be had for providers in the United States. Generally speaking, everyone who wants a streaming subscription in the U.S. already has one, but that doesn’t mean there’s no room for growth elsewhere. A new projection from Ampere Analysis reinforces that notion, showing that global streaming subscriptions will continue to grow until they surpass 2 billion by 2029.

Longtime Disney production executive Louie Provost is leaving the company’s fold.

Insiders say the executive’s contract was up, with Provost set to depart at the end of this year.

Provost joined the company in 2007 as an assistant to then-president of production Oren Aviv. He climbed up the production and development ranks, making it to The Hollywood Reporter’s Next Gen list in 2015 and to his current title, executive vp, production as he oversaw a range of live-action titles. Among those were the $ 1 billion hit Aladdin, the fondly-regarded The Muppets, the big-budget Maleficent and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, and the personal Pete’s Dragon. New films arriving to Hulu in the month of December include those that came out in 2024 like Cuckoo, The Inheritance, Storm Crashers, Summer Camp, Flycatcher and more. Christmas favorite Elf arrived on the streamer at the end of November ahead of the holiday season, and Miracle on 34th Street (1994) started streaming on Hulu Dec. 1. Ben Stiller’s new film Nutcrackers also provides a more modern Christmas story.

Beloved classic films coming to Hulu this moth include Cheaper By the Dozen and Cheaper By the Dozen 2, Cast Away and all four Twilight films among others. Ridley Scott’s first Gladiator film will be available to stream starting Dec. 2.

Early in the new Disney+ series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, we meet our young hero, Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers). Will Ferrell is set to take on the world of televised courtroom justice.

Ferrell is set to star for director Nicholas Stoller in the comedy feature Judgment Day, which is currently in development at Amazon MGM Studios. Stoller also penned the screenplay.

Judgment Day centers on a young convict who gets out of prison and takes an unscripted TV courtroom hostage, as he is convinced that the TV judge (Ferrell) delivered a ruling that destroyed his life.

Serving as producers are Ferrell, Jessica Elbaum and Alex Brown for Gloria Sanchez Productions and Stoller for Stoller Global Solutions.

Ferrell can soon be seen opposite Reese Witherspoon in Amazon MGM’s movie You’re Cordially Invited, which Stoller directed. The wedding comedy co-stars Geraldine Viswanathan and Jimmy Tatro and begins streaming via Prime Video on Jan. 30.

Stoller is known for helming such films as Bros, Neighbors and its sequel and Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

Disney’s fiscal fourth quarter 2024 earnings were revealed on Thursday morning, and as part of the report, the company revealed that it had grown to 174 million Disney+ Core and Hulu customers, plus 35.9 million Disney+ HotStar subscribers in India. While those totals do not account for overlap created by the Disney Bundle, that means globally, Disney has 210.6 million Disney+ and Hulu subscribers.

Disney+ leads the way, now numbering 158.6 million customers worldwide. That’s a jump of 4.8 million from last quarter, when the streamer shared that it had 153.8 million global viewers. Its U.S. and Canadian total is 56M; in India, Hotstar has 35.9M; with the remaining 138.5 internationally.

Spectrum TV customers get access to more than $80 in free streamers, and the company wants to make it easier to use them.

Charter Communications wants its customers to know that better access to free entertainment is coming. Charter operates the Spectrum TV cable business, and in the last 14 months has made deals with Disney, NBCUniversal, Paramount, Warner Bros. Discovery and other programmers that allow it to offer its cable customers free access to their various streaming services, including Disney+, Max, Paramount+ and Peacock. The rollout of those free subscriptions to customers is still ongoing, but according to Charter CEO Chris Winfrey, the process of signing up for free partner streamers from Spectrum will soon be simplified, and include more choices.

The top six content producers in the world will spend $126 billion on content in 2024, which will mark a new record high and will account for 51% of the entire global investment in content this year.

Formerly, customers could add Disney+ to their Hulu account for an extra $2 per month.

Customers curious about Disney+ now have fewer choices to sign up for the service. Previously, Disney allowed new subscribers to sign up for a Disney+ subscription as an add-on to Hulu, as they can do with ESPN+, Max, and other streamers in order to keep their bills all in one place and take advantage of discounts. However, the House of Mouse has begun informing customers that they can no longer purchase Disney+ as a Hulu add-on, instead pushing users to one of the Disney Bundle options instead.

Key Details: Formerly, Disney+ could be added to Hulu for an extra $2 per month. Customers are now encouraged to sign up for the Disney Duo Basic bundle for $11 per month. Viewers who had the Disney+ add-on via Hulu are being updated to the Duo Basic plan at no additional cost.
