It's no secret that the past three Jurassic World movies have been a bit divisive among fans. Starting with 2015's Jurassic World, the new trilogy starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard moved far away from the core formula of the original movie by having dinosaurs gradually make their way out into the world at large, where they caused all sorts of chaos. Universal capped off that series with Jurassic World Dominion, a huge crossover movie which saw the return of original Jurassic Park stars Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum. Since Dominion was marketed as the "conclusion of the Jurassic era," it felt like it could be a proper capstone to the series.
It was and it wasn't. Yes, Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard's characters are seemingly on the shelf along with other franchise alums, but Universal is powering ahead with a new Jurassic World film due out this summer.

The Fantastic Four are known are Marvel’s “First Family” but this summer, they will technically be newbies to the MCU. Of course, we’re using that term very loosely.
As the nickname denotes, the characters are true Marvel icons and the actors playing the core four are anything but newbies, each starring in massive projects before now. But more on that momentarily. For now, we’re here to tell you that “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is starting to become a bit clearer, especially after finally getting a first trailer to kick off February.
Set to hit theaters on July 25, the film takes place “against the vibrant backdrop of a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world” and follows the Fantastic Four as they take on the Devourer of Worlds — Galactus.
Here is who you need to know in the film.

32 years after Steven Spielberg changed blockbuster filmmaking forever with "Jurassic Park," the franchise is getting a major face lift with this summer's "Jurassic World Rebirth." Directed by Gareth Edwards of "Rogue One" and "The Creator" fame, the film is being billed as a new beginning for the dino-centric property. But it will also, in some ways, be going back to where it all started. That's because screenwriter David Koepp (who also wrote Spielberg's classic movie) is finally making use of a beloved scene from Michael Crichton's original "Jurassic Park" novel.
In a first-look piece published by Vanity Fair, producer Frank Marshall confirmed that the book's famous river raft scene involving the Tyrannosaurus Rex, which was cut from the original "Jurassic Park," will make it to the screen in "Rebirth." In Crichton's novel, Alan Grant and John Hammond's grandchildren, Tim and Lex Murphy, try to drift through a...

Frankie Muniz steps into uncharted territory in Renner, a psychological thriller that blends artificial intelligence with psychological horror. Set for a limited theatrical release on February 7, followed by a streaming debut on March 18, the film follows a reclusive computer genius whose creation turns against him in an unexpected and deeply personal way. Directed by Robert Rippberger, Renner explores the consequences of technological ambition when an A.I. life coach becomes something far more sinister.
Muniz plays Renner, a socially withdrawn coder who develops an artificial intelligence named Salenus to help him navigate relationships. Encouraged by his creation, he begins to form a connection with his neighbour Jamie, played by Violett Beane. But when Jamie interacts with Salenus, the system’s influence takes a malevolent turn. Four major recent releases from Disney have disappeared from the Disney+ streaming service in the UK – one of which is now exclusive elsewhere.
I’m going to have a go at trying to work out how the ins and outs of Hollywood studios go, but still confess it baffles me a bit. Back when Disney acquired the 20th Century Fox movie studio and its assorted projects, it infamously laid out thousands of staff and culled dozens of movies that were in development. For anything to sneak through that process was a bit of a minor miracle.
Thus, when we learned that Gareth Edwards’ sci-fi film The Creator – originally known as True Love – was being backed by Disney money, it was something of a surprise. Released under the 20th Century Studios label, this was a standalone, non-franchise sci-fi original, costing $80m to make, and just as much to release and market.

Later this year, Amblin Entertainment and Universal Pictures are reviving their long-running Jurassic franchise for yet another walk in the park. Or in the world at large, I suppose, considering that the last entry, Jurassic World Dominion, saw dinosaurs get out and repopulate planet Earth. Kind of. Because after they repopulated, people just stuck most of them in a nature preserve so that the movie could remind people of other entries in the franchise.
Now, another Jurassic World movie is coming, and it's best if you don't think too hard about it. If it sounds like I'm particularly salty about this, it's because I am. Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” was a poster child for the power of inclusion when it broke box office records in 2023, but the $1.45 billion-grossing movie is only the 119th most inclusive film made in the past five years, according to the Inclusion List.
The annual list — presented by Dr. Stacy L. Smith and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, in collaboration with the Adobe Foundation — is a data-driven ranking that identified the 150 most inclusive films from 2019 to 2023 and ranks a single year’s films across gender, race/ethnicity, LGBTQ+, disability and age representation.

Jennifer Lopez does not have the best reputation in the film industry. Several of her acting performances have been considered abysmal, as she has been a part of some really bad films. Most infamously this includes Gigli, a 2003 Ben Affleck movie that achieved a mere 6% on Rotten Tomatoes. Other Lopez films, such as The Boy Next Door, Feel the Noise, Jack, and The Wedding Planner have also managed to get Tomatometers that are under 20% on Rotten Tomatoes. In critics' eyes, Lopez has had a very rotten streak.
This is not true of every Lopez movie, however, as she has been in some projects that were critical darlings. Her music documentaries are generally fairly well-received, including The Greatest Love Story Never Told, which has a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. The 1998 crime drama Out of Sight got a universally positive 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. Lopez's performance in Hustlers was also praised back in 2019, and it got an 88% Tomatometer.

Throughout the 2010s, and lingering into the 2020s, massive, corporate-backed I.P. has dominated both the domestic box office and the American journalistic conversation about cinema in general. We live in a world where reporters, when they had an opportunity to sit down with Martin Scorsese to discuss new masterworks like "The Silence" or "The Wolf of Wall Street," decided to ask him about Captain America and his place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Vocal subverters of the dominant paradigm repeatedly yawped that Hollywood should devote more time and resources to new ideas. After all, why be the next "Star Wars" when you can be the first of something different? Where, oh where were the original sci-fi/fantasy ideas?
But then, when an ambitious filmmaker tries to make something new and striking for a broad cinematic audience, it generally tanks. It seemed that audiences were more eager to attach themselves to...

Mark Wahlberg's career has been incredibly varied. On the one hand, he has worked with some highly influential directors in critically acclaimed films. His breakout role was playing Eddie / Dirk in Boogie Nights, an epic drama directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. This role earned him buzz, but it was not until a decade later that he received his first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for The Departed. Wahlberg also got a nomination for his producing work on The Fighter, which was nominated for Best Picture.
While these critically acclaimed films have been part of Wahlberg's career, he is also an actor capable of making a big box office hit. His top movie at the worldwide box office was Transformers: Age of Extinction, followed by Transformers: The Last Knight. Several other movies of Wahlberg's have made hundreds of millions of dollars, bringing his aggregate career gross to over $5 billion.

A controversial romance movie with a Game of Thrones star has become a streaming success. The show was a launching point for many of its cast members. One such talent was Emilia Clarke, who played Daenerys Targaryen in the George R.R. Martin fantasy adaptation across all eight seasons. Clarke was 24 years old when she made her debut as part of the Game of Thrones cast in 2011. Prior to the HBO series, her only roles had been a single episode of the TV series Doctors, the short film Drop the Dog, and a part in the TV movie Triassic Attack.

Ryan Gosling occupies a unique space in Hollywood, as he's about as equally well known for his work in major blockbusters as he is for smaller movies. He was best known to many viewers for a long time as one of the stars of The Notebook (2004), but he would go on to become known for titles across a variety of genres, including movies like Drive (2011), Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011), and The Place Beyond the Pines (2012).
The mid-2010s saw Gosling star in a number of notable movies that, even if they were always box office successes, they showed his range as a performer. La La Land (2016) remains one of his biggest hits from the era, but he also appeared in cult classic The Nice Guys (2016), Blade Runner 2049 (2017), and First Man (2018). Liam Neeson has had quite an interesting career over the last few decades. Early in his career, he became an Oscar-nominated actor, recognized for his work in the leading role in Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List. He has also received Golden Globe nominations for Michael Collins and Kinsey. As such, many of his works have been critically acclaimed, including Everest, Widows, Husbands and Wives, Ponyo, and Batman Begins. Thus, Neeson is a well-respected and acclaimed actor of his generation.
However, Neeson's career has also been saturated with action movies that are poorly reviewed, including Blacklight, Taken 3, and Men in Black: International. In addition, many of his films have disappointed at the box office. Despite receiving positive reviews, the pre-covid Ordinary Love made less than $1 million at the worldwide box office. His recent 2024 film Absolution also struggled at the box office, getting just $3.4 million. However, another 2024 movie starring Neeson is...

Dwayne Johnson boasts one of the more impressive box office streaks of any working actor today. Last year, he passed the $6 billion mark for the worldwide gross of all the films in which he is considered a leading actor. A good chunk of this sum comes from the Fast and Furious movies, which have collectively become one of the highest-grossing film franchises of all time. Last year's Moana 2 also made significant strides for Johnson, who voiced demi-god Maui in the movie.
That said, not all of Johnson's films have been box office winners. As much as he has brought several series and revival franchises (e.g. Jumanji and Journey to the Center of the Earth) to success, Johnson has also experienced massive box office flops. Such films include movies like Jem and the Holograms, which made just over $2 million at the global box office. A different Johnson flop was released last year.

Yesterday evening, a rumour hit social media claiming that Marvel Studios is making moves to recast Chadwick Boseman's T'Challa. The news has received a mixed response, though many fans are eager to see the character back on screen.
After Boseman passed away, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever confirmed that T'Challa had also died. Shuri inherited the mantle and the sequel ended by revealing the hero secretly had a son with Nakia, a young boy also named T'Challa.
While Avengers: Secret Wars' Black Panther may be a Variant, we think Toussaint is going to be aged up before picking up where his father left off in the Mutant Saga. With all that in mind, we're now taking a look at the actors who could take over this role in the MCU.

While Avengers: Secret Wars' Black Panther may be a Variant, we think Toussaint is going to be aged up before picking up where his father left off in the Mutant Saga. With all that in mind, we're now taking a look at the actors who could take over this role in the MCU.

The Cinema Audio Society announced nominations on Tuesday, Jan. 7, honoring the best in cinematic sound mixing. Nominees for live-action motion picture sound mixing are A Complete Unknown, Deadpool & Wolverine, Dune: Part Two, Gladiator II, and Wicked. That includes four of the top five contenders in Gold Derby’s current racetrack odds for Best Sound. Deadpool & Wolverine is the outlier, ranked 10th in our odds. Missing from the Cas nominations list were the Golden Globe-leading Emilia Pérez, as well as three other films shortlisted by the Motion Picture Academy: Blitz, Alien: Romulus, and Joker: Folie à Deux.
The Cas Awards used to correlate with the Oscar for Best Sound Mixing, but that category was consolidated with Best Sound Editing for the 93rd annual awards honoring the best films of 2020. Now the Oscars present a single award for Best Sound. The Oscar champs since them have been Sound of Metal (2020), Dune: Part One...

Movie stardom is incredibly difficult to achieve, and even more difficult to maintain. Once an actor finds that breakthrough role, they're immediately faced with the challenge of giving their fans what they want while also, depending on their level of ambition, taking on roles that will hopefully expand their range (or at the very least keep them from getting stuck in a creative rut). Some actors correctly identify that their audience isn't looking for much in the way of variance (John Wayne is a perfect example of this), while others are determined to throw a curveball here and there (as Sylvester Stallone's unwisely did with poorly received comedies like "Rhinestone" and "Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot"). Mess with expectations too much, and the fans will stop trusting you to deliver.
Wayne and Stallone at least had a go-to mode of movie they could return to as needed to satisfy their audiences.

Jason Statham has become one of the biggest action stars of his generation. His name is synonymous with several major action franchises, including The Expendables and the Fast and Furious franchises. In addition to his supporting roles in those megahit series, Statham has been the lead in several major franchises, including The Transporter, the Crank movies, and the modern duology The Meg and Meg 2: The Trench. Many of these films have succeeded both in theaters and on streaming.
While his career is chock-full of films overall, Statham is not without his gap periods. 2023, for example, was huge for the actor, as it saw the release of three franchise entries: The Expendables 4, Meg 2: The Trench, and Fast X. The year prior, however, had no theatrical releases for Statham. The same has been true in other years for the actor, where he will cycle through a huge year and...

For funny actors and aspiring stand-up comics, landing a long-running sitcom role is like winning the lottery. You get guaranteed work for years and, even in the streaming era, the chance for a lifetime of residual checks. But some sitcom stars insist on biting the humor hand that feeds them. Here are five actors from successful TV comedies who wish they had never landed their roles in the first place…
1 Chevy Chase, ‘Community’
Chase, who had been irrelevant for years before finding a new generation of fans on Community, got himself canned for using a racial slur on the set. Fine, no problem, Chase told Marc Maron on the Wtf podcast — he didn’t want to be there anyway. “I honestly felt the show wasn’t funny enough for me, ultimately,” Chase explained. “I felt a little bit constrained. Everybody had their bits, and I thought they were all good.

Gareth Edwards' underrated sci-fi film finds streaming success two years after its release. The British filmmaker made his feature directorial debut and first rose to prominence with his 2010 sci-fi horror film, Monsters, an independent production made on a small budget of $500,000, with Edwards also serving as the cinematographer, production designer, and a visual effects artist. From there, he graduated on to directing the big-budget monster movie, 2014's Godzilla, which served as the first film in Legendary's Monsterverse franchise.
Next, Edwards took on one of the most highly coveted jobs in Hollywood, directing a Star Wars movie. He helmed Rogue One, which experienced a troubled production, and it was co-writer Tony Gilroy who oversaw the film's extensive reshoots. After that, Edwards didn't direct a film for seven years until his own original sci-fi epic, The Creator, in 2023. Next up, Edwards has joined another major film franchise, having directed the upcoming Jurassic World Rebirth,...

Denzel Washington wasn't always seen as an action star. Since the '80s, he has headlined a number of dramatic films that have earned him awards recognition, but his career shifted in the early 2000s with the release of Man on Fire (2004), which saw him become a one-man army-type of hero. This continued with The Book of Eli (2010), Safe House (2012), and 2 Guns (2013), all of which feature Washington taking down an abundance of enemies.
Now 70 years old, Washington is still widely associated with the action genre due to his starring role in a popular thriller franchise. The American actor takes on the role of a former government assassin in the Antoine Fuqua-directed movies, killing criminals and protecting the innocent with lethal efficiency. Washington first played the assassin in 2014 before returning for two sequels.

John David Washington found himself in a rare situation while promoting his latest film, Netflix’s “The Piano Lesson.” It was his first real press tour in a while, since the rollout for his previous few films (including Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” and Gareth Edwards’ “The Creator”) were impacted by the Covid pandemic, then the dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
“It was a relief to be able to do it like you’re supposed to, as far as getting with the people, right after they see it in the theater, and talking,” Washington says. And after one screening in Paris, his parents — actors Denzel and Pauletta Washington — joined him onstage for the Q&a. “I never thought that I’d be on the same stage with my old man talking about a film that we’re a part of — not in my wildest dreams.”

The Creator was one of the most creative films of 2023 and the sci-fi flick is now available to stream. From director Gareth Edwards and starring John David Washington, The Creator made a big impact on the public pre-release thanks to stellar trailers and creative marketing techniques involving the film's robots. Disney and 20th Century managed to build a great deal of interest in the film as well. Many considered it one of the best movies of 2023 according to early reactions revealed before its theatrical debut.
While The Creator was released in theaters on September 29, 2023, this did not prove to be the preferred way to watch the movie. Those interested in seeing Gareth Edwards' movie as quickly as possible proved to be a smaller group than expected based on The Creator's box office opening weekend struggling. This prompted more waiting until it came to a streaming service to watch Gareth Edwards' movie at home.

It is rare for there to be big-budget original sci-fi movies in theaters these days, and while it didn't become a box office success, there are many fans looking for movies like The Creator. Gareth Edwards' latest movie takes place in a futuristic world where Western civilization has declared war on AI. The fictional nation of New Asia combats the efforts to eradicate AI. An ex-special forces agent, Joshua (John David Washington), is tasked with traveling to New Asia and destroying a new AI weapon.
The Creator explores ideas about humanity's relationship with AI, debuting at a time when its core theme couldn't be more relevant. The story uses science fiction as a medium to explore themes about empathy and what it means to be sentient and human. This is a story that's been explored in Hollywood before. Disney has redeemed their dismal 2023 by hitting a major box office milestone in 2024. Across their brands, Disney had a string of unsuccessful releases last year. One of the most notorious was the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie The Marvels, which grossed $206.1 million against a budget of more than $300 million and became the lowest-grossing movie in the 34-film franchise. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was similarly unsuccessful, reportedly losing Disney $143 million, while Haunted Mansion also severely underperformed, grossing $117.5 million against its $150 million budget.
Per Deadline, Disney has now become the only studio to gross more than $2 billion at the domestic box office, off the back of hits such as Inside Out 2 ($652.9 million domestic), which is now the highest-grossing animated movie of all time worldwide, Deadpool & Wolverine ($636.7 million), which is the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time worldwide, and Moana 2 ($342 million). Gareth Edwards’ latest movie, The Creator (2023), has been a big hit with audiences. Starring John David Washington, Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe, Sturgill Simpson, Allison Janney, and Madeleine Yuna Voyles (in her first-ever acting role), the film has a cool story and stunning visuals. While it’s inspired by classics like Apocalypse Now (1979), Blade Runner (1982), and Akira (1988), Edwards still brings something fresh to the table—especially compared to Hollywood’s recent sci-fi flicks. With its top-notch sci-fi vibes and detailed world-building, the movie feels like a breath of fresh air for fans of the genre. However, the narrative falters due to unfortunate editing choices and a lack of depth in character development. Despite these shortcomings, the film remains a worthwhile watch, especially for those tired of the repetitive themes of alien invasions or AI replacing humans. Mind you, Edwards’ creation at least tried to break free from these tired tropes. I...

Netflix has often been a venue for theatrical flops to find new life, and it's currently providing that service for a 2024 horror film you likely missed. "Afraid" was Blumhouse's third of five horror movies this year, following "Night Swim" and "Imaginary" and preceding "Speak No Evil" and "House of Spoils." John David Washington discussed what it felt like to be cast as the lead character in Christopher Nolan's 2020 movie Tenet. Tenet is one of the most mind-bending Christopher Nolan movies, in which Washington plays the Protagonist, a secret agent who must bend the laws of nature and time to prevent World War III. In addition to Washington, the cast of Tenet includes Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Kenneth Branagh, and Michael Caine.

Jurassic World Rebirth director Gareth Edwards teases that his upcoming film will feature a return to the style of Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park (1993). On the heels of his triumph with Oscar winner Godzilla Minus One, Takashi Yamazaki is set to write, direct and steer VFX for a new Godzilla film for Toho, the Japanese creator and longtime steward of the franchise, Toho announced on Friday.
The news came as part of an “Emergency Announcement” via X (formerly Twitter). No further details on the project were disclosed, including whether the film will be a direct follow-up to Godzilla Minus One.
A monster hit at a worldwide gross of over $116M, against a relatively lean budget, Godzilla Minus One won Yamazaki the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects earlier this year, besting titles including Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Napoleon and The Creator.
Pic is set in the aftermath of World War II, with Japan already grappling with economic and social devastation before an even more destructive force arrives: Godzilla.
