Back when Megan Fox started her career and catapulted to fame following her appearance in Transformers, the actress attracted significant popularity. So much so, that she even got compared to the Hollywood diva Angelina Jolie. People believed that Fox could be the potential second coming of Jolie.

Well, being a massive Angelina Jolie fan herself, Megan Fox welcomed this comparison. However, Fox later revealed that while being grateful for people’s faith in her potential, she believed that she was nowhere near close to Jolie. Claiming that Jolie was a bit more serious than herself, the Jennifer’s Body star hailed the Lara Croft actress.

Megan Fox was once seen as the next Angelina Jolie during the peak of the Transformers star’s career. She welcomed this comparison since Fox considered herself one of Jolie’s many fans. However, Jolie’s father felt Fox needed to meet other requirements before the comparisons truly meant anything.

Megan Fox's career exploded in 2007 when she landed the role of Mikaela Banes opposite Shia Labeouf as Sam Witwicky in Michael Bay's mega-blockbuster "Transformers." She was a legitimate movie star and arguably the most popular pin-up icon of that era, with the latter being meant as a high compliment. Fox adroitly subverted her sex-symbol status two years later in Karyn Kusama's "Jennifer's Body" by playing a teenage-girl-turned-succubus; the film is now a proper cult classic, but it inexplicably failed to vault Fox into the more complex roles of which she was richly deserving.
15 years later, we're still waiting for directors to realize there's much more to Fox than her undeniable beauty. Recently, she's been in programmers (no shame in that), but it feels like there's so much more to explore with this abundantly talented performer. Perhaps she's found that role in her latest movie, which is currently...

The latest Jeopardy! champion has become a quick fan favorite. That is because he is a priest and even wears his collar. However, he has shocked fans thanks to his knowledge in some areas. He even qualified for the Tournament of Champions despite an early game botch. Add on his ability to answer some surprising questions, and he is on quite the roll.
Here is how the Jeopardy! priest has done so far on the game show.
Jeopardy! Priest Qualifies For Tournament Of Champions

The nominations for the 2010 Academy Awards, recognizing the films that were released in 2009, were announced on February 2 at 5:38 a.m. I remember because I got up early to watch them. That year saw Sandra Bullock nominated for Best Actress (for "The Blind Side") alongside Helen Mirren ("The Last Station"), Gabourey Sidibe ("Precious"), Carey Mulligan ("An Education"), and Meryl Streep ("Julie & Julia").
The night before the Oscar announcements, however, the notorious Golden Raspberry awards, a.k.a. the Razzies, announced their nominees for the worst films of 2009. The Razzies are, of course, a hotly contested tradition, and it has many critics who point out the mean-spiritedness of the awards as well as its tendency to pick on pop movies and already hated performers. The nominees for Worst Actress that year were Sandra Bullock ("All About Steve"), Beyoncé ("Obsessed"), Miley Cyrus ("The Hannah Montana Movie"), Sarah Jessica Parker ("Did You Hear About the Morgans?...

A movie doesn't have to be successful to be a classic. Take "Heathers" — written by Daniel Waters, directed by Michael Lehmann, starring Winona Ryder.
Ryder, fresh off "Beetlejuice," played another death-obsessed teenager. Unlike gothic outsider Lydia Deetz, though, Veronica Sawyer from "Heathers" is in the in-crowd. She hangs out with Westerburg High School's trio of mean girls, all named Heather, but feels disillusioned. So her new bad boy lover J.D. Megan Fox, the actress whose work quickly turned famous during the Aughts due to the Transformers franchise, became a symbol of feminist thought and queer representation with Jennifer’s Body. The dialogue surrounding the film put Fox at the center of controversy, although the film certainly earned back its reputation and became a cult classic over time.

Ahhh, fall. It’s finally here. The leaves are dropping, pumpkin spice is in the air (and everyone’s coffee), and the holidays are close enough where we’re all either rushing to get our work done before the end of the year or starting to wind down in hopes that people will soon stop bothering us. It’s a magical time, especially with new awards contenders like “Anora” and “Conclave” finally releasing to wide audiences, but let’s not forget that older films deserve some love too. Especially around Thanksgiving, a holiday specifically designed for reflection. What better way to celebrate than looking back on some classics of cinema, both the widely seen and the obscure.

For the longest time, movies featured men avenging women who were victims of crimes committed by men. As the times changed and that trope waned in terms of popularity, women finally got to avenge themselves on the big screen. But there was a small, teeny-weeny issue: stories about women were still being written by men. So, even though we started getting female-led action thrillers, due to the inequality of opportunities in the entertainment business, the extent of the awesomeness of women was still limited by the imagination of men. There were exceptions in the form of The Bride Wore Black, Kill Bill, Gone Girl, Audition, The Long Kiss Goodnight, La Llorona, The Invisible Man, and Saani Kaayidham. But you’ve to admit that women telling stories about women dismantling the patriarchal system with some righteous violence, like Revenge, Violation, and Jennifer’s Body, were a cut above the rest. Don’t Move...

Slaughterhouse Rules.
Back in mid-September, we began a themed collection of episodes featuring Gay Icons and Anniversaries. Trace and I kicked off the series with a revisit of Jennifer’s Body (listen) before delving into Jonathan Glazer’s controversial Birth (listen), and David Fincher’s Gone Girl (listen) for its 10th anniversary.
Now it’s time to tackle the 50th anniversary of Tobe Hooper‘s classic text, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. It’s a film that hardly needs an introduction, but in case folks have never seen it, the film follows a van full of teenagers travelling through Texas to ensure the resting site of a relative hasn’t been disturbed by a recent wave of grave robberies.
Of course what they do is run afoul of a family of men who have resorted to murder and cannibalism following the closure of the slaughterhouse. With masked killer Leatherface doing most of the heavy lifting,...

After playing a dangerous lottery game with John Cena and Awkwafina for the action comedy Jackpot!, Paul Feig could tackle the upcoming Lionsgate feature The Housemaid, starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried about family secrets coming to light. Sweeney and Seyfried are in final negotiations to join the Hidden Pictures/Feigco Entertainment thriller written by Rebecca Sonnenshine, based on the bestselling novel by Freida McFadden.
In addition to their starring roles, Sweeney and Seyfried executive produce alongside Alex Young and McFadden. Hidden Pictures’ Todd Lieberman will produce.
Here is the official logline for The Housemaid courtesy of Lionsgate:
In the film, Sweeney will play Millie, a struggling young woman who is relieved to get a fresh start as a housemaid to Nina (Seyfried) and Andrew, an upscale, wealthy couple… but soon learns that the family’s secrets are far more dangerous than her own.

Short of outright sobs, there are just two sounds you’ll hear coming from movie theaters: laughter and screams. When filmmakers can successfully elicit both — running horror-loving audiences through emotional minefields that chase each adrenaline spike with just enough comedic relief to set them up for another shock — their films take on an almost electric quality. Just thinking of the stunning yet silly reveals in genre staples like “Shaun of the Dead” or “The Cabin in the Woods” can zap a smile on your face, and leave you itching to rewatch other memorable scenes and scares from your favorite funny yet spooky movies.
There’s considerable debate about which title merits being called the first horror comedy. Numerous shorts, including the 1920 silent film “Haunted Spooks,” might qualify. But by the time Bud Abbott...

After closing out September with a re-do of Jennifer’s Body (listen), a film we covered in one of our earliest episodes, and a discussion of Jonathan Glazer’s controversial Birth (listen), we’re continuing our theme of Anniversary/Diva Worship with a look at David Fincher‘s Gone Girl (2014).
Gone Girl sees Amy Dunne (Rosamund Pike), the inspiration for the beloved series of “Amazing Amy” children’s books, go missing. The prime suspect is her husband Nick (Ben Affleck), though he is as shocked at his wife’s disappearance as the police are.
As the days go by and more clues are unearthed, it becomes clear that Nick isn’t honest as he seems, and that the marriage he had with Amy may not have been as blissful as everyone thought.

If read in order, the subtitles of the first six theatrically released "Resident Evil" movies almost ... almost ... spell out a "Divine Comedy"-like story arc. The first film is, naturally, merely called "Resident Evil" (2002), and it's about the release of a deadly, corporate-owned virus that turns the citizens of the world into zombies, creatures, or merely dead corpses. The film's sequel is subtitled "Apocalypse" (2004), implying that the virus escaped containment and infected the Earth. The third film is called "Extinction," implying that the virus did its job and humanity has become extinct. The arc is pretty clear.
What comes after extinction? Well, the fourth film is called "Afterlife" (2010), following the now-dead humanity into Elysium. How apropos. Sadly, the fifth film in the series is not called "Resurrection" or "Reincarnation," but "Retribution" (2012), kind of breaking the spiritual cycle. Perhaps with "Retribution," humanity has become a gaggle of vengeful ghosts? Or perhaps not.

We spent the first half of September with discussions of Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice (listen) and Colm McCarthy’s The Girl With All the Gifts (listen) before celebrating our 300th episode (and the start of a six-week theme on Divas/Anniversaries) with a revisit of Karyn Kusama’s Jennifer’s Body (listen). Kidman stars as Anna, a widow who is still grieving her husband’s sudden death ten years later. Despite being newly engaged to Joseph (Danny Huston), Anna upends her entire life when 10-year-old Sean (Cameron Bright) appears in her apartment, claiming to be her dead husband.
As her concerned family, including matriarch Eleanor (Lauren Bacall) and brother-in-law Bob (Arliss Howard) question the boy, new details about Anna’s marriage emerge courtesy of dead Sean’s brother Clifford (Peter Stormare) and his wife,...

After kicking September off with discussions of Tim Burton’s classic Beetlejuice (listen) and the modern zombie film The Girl With All the Gifts (listen), we’ve finally reached our 300th episode! To celebrate this milestone, we’re doing a 6-week theme month of Diva/Anniversary worship (running all the way through Halloween), and we’re starting by revisiting a film we covered in one of our earliest episodes so that we can give it the proper, modern HQ treatment: Karyn Kusama‘s Jennifer’s Body (2009)!
In Jennifer’s Body, When popular girl Jennifer (Megan Fox) is possessed by a demon after a botched ritual, she turns a hungry eye on guys who never stood a chance with her before. While Jennifer satisfies her appetite for human flesh with the school’s male population, her best friend Needy (Amanda Seyfried) learns what’s happening and vows to put an end to the carnage.

[Editor’s Note: The below contains spoilers for “Jennifer’s Body.”]
Hell may be a teenage girl, but the occult taking over high school halls is nothing new. The 2009 film “Jennifer’s Body,” though, ushered in a new era of “female rage” being shown onscreen. And what better age to capture coming into power than being a teen?
Academy Award-winning “Juno” scribe Diablo Cody wrote the now-iconic feature, with Karyn Kusama (“Yellowjackets”) directing. The appropriately titled “Jennifer’s Body” hinges on how high school queen bee Jennifer (Megan Fox) wields her newfound sex appeal. Sure, she may look like a grown woman on the outside, but does teen Jennifer really know how to navigate adult situations? Not quite.
So when Jennifer sets her sights on seducing the lead singer (Adam Brody) of a band touring through town, it doesn’t totally go to plan. Turns out that the aforementioned rockers want to sacrifice a virgin, and Jennifer lies about having no sexual history whatsoever.

Trace and I spent August discussing Paul Morrissey’s melodramatic Blood for Dracula (listen), Julia Ducournau’s body horror Titane (listen), and Stephen Herek’s family creature feature Critters (listen) before kicking off September with Tim Burton’s ode to weird, Beetlejuice (listen).
For episode 299, we’ve hopped across the pond to tackle director Colm McCarthy‘s under seen contemporary zombie classic The Girl With All the Gifts (2016). In the dystopian film, young Melanie (Sennia Nanua) is restrained in a wheelchair in a top secret laboratory run by the cruel Dr. Caldwell (Glenn Close) and watched closely by violent Sergeant Parks (Paddy Considine).
The only bright spot in Melanie’s life is Ms. Justineau (Gemma Arterton), a young teacher who is both kindly and a little naive. When a large group of “hungries” infiltrate the base, Melanie and the others must go on the run, trying to survive in...

Megan Fox has received praise for her thoughtful performance in the upcoming sci-fi film “Subservience.” The movie tells the story of Alice, an android character portrayed with nuance by Fox. Director Sk Dale worked closely with Fox on this challenging role, made more difficult by its demanding physical and technical aspects.
In interviews, Dale described Fox’s remarkable memory and ability to learn lines quickly. Fox’s familiarity with Dale from their previous collaboration, 2021’s “Till Death,” helped the actress tackle the intimate scenes in “Subservience” with ease. As an android, Fox minimized blinking and movements to portray the inhuman qualities of her character. Dale utilized post-production effects to further enhance these robotic traits.
The director worked with Fox to push boundaries, especially in scenes showing damage or glitches to the android. Their goal was to craft a believable robotic performance while also allowing Fox to showcase her acting talents.

Directed by Adam Carter Rehmeier (Dinner in America) from a screenplay by first-time feature writer Tom Dean, a film titled Carolina Caroline is currently in production – but rather than filming in North or South Carolina, it’s being made in Kentucky. When you first look at the cast list as reported by Deadline, you might be led to believe that this is a horror project, because in the lead roles we have genre icons Samara Weaving and Kyle Gallner, who has been in the likes of Red, The Haunting in Connecticut, Jennifer’s Body, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Red State, The Walking Dead, The Cleanse, Alien Code, Ghosts of War, Smile, The Passenger; Mother, May I?; and the upcoming Smile sequel. But this one isn’t horror; it’s being described as a romantic crime thriller.

The International Cinematographers Guild (Icg) will recognize two acclaimed professionals at award ceremonies later this year. Mexican cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto will receive the Distinguished Filmmaker Award. M. David Mullen will receive the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Mentor Award.
Prieto has worked on blockbuster films and critically-acclaimed independents. His credits range from Martin Scorsese’s upcoming “Killers of the Flower Moon” to Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie.” Prieto first found success with director Alejandro González Iñárritu in 2000s films like “Babel,” “21 Grams,” and “Amores Perros.” He has shown versatility across genres with work on movies such as “The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Argo,” and “8 Mile.”
Prieto is set to make his directorial debut with an adaptation of Juan Rulfo’s novel “Pedro Paramo.” He also received a 2024 MTV Video Music Award nomination for his cinematography on a Taylor Swift music video. The Icg says Prieto represents excellence in his field.
