Now, Variety has learned that Lionsgate is planning to release The Housemaid on Christmas Day 2025.

Lionsgate is behind this upcoming thriller. The entertainment company has reportedly finalized an agreement for Emmy Award-nominated actress Sydney Sweeney to star in the film. The company is also reportedly in the last stages of negotiations for Golden Globe Award-winning actress Amanda Seyfried to join the cast as another lead.

Sweeney is best known for starring as Cassie Howard in the hit HBO teen drama series Euphoria. She's also known for her roles in other shows such as The Handmaid's Tale, Sharp Objects, Everything Sucks! and The White Lotus. Her most recent acting gigs were starring in the rom-com Anyone but You, the superhero film Madame Web and the horror flick Immaculate.

After playing a dangerous lottery game with John Cena and Awkwafina for the action comedy Jackpot!, Paul Feig could tackle the upcoming Lionsgate feature The Housemaid, starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried about family secrets coming to light. Lionsgate Television has optioned the R.F. Kuang novel “Yellowface” with plans to develop it as a scripted series, Variety has learned exclusively.

Karyn Kusama is onboard to direct and executive produce the potential series. Captivate Entertainment, known for the Jason Bourne film franchise, and Constance Wu and Justine Suzanne Jones of Tempo Wubato Productions are also set to produce, with Ben Smith of Captivate executive producing. Adam Docksey, vice president of development at Captivate, is helping to oversee the project for the company. No writer is currently attached.

The official logline states, “After watching friend and literary rival Athena Liu die in a freak accident, June Hayward steals the only copy of Athena’s just-finished masterpiece, passing off the experimental novel about Chinese laborers during WWI as her own. Newly styled as ‘Juniper Song,’ June rides high until the escalating consequences of her con threaten to crash down around her.

If read in order, the subtitles of the first six theatrically released "Resident Evil" movies almost ... almost ... spell out a "Divine Comedy"-like story arc. The first film is, naturally, merely called "Resident Evil" (2002), and it's about the release of a deadly, corporate-owned virus that turns the citizens of the world into zombies, creatures, or merely dead corpses. The film's sequel is subtitled "Apocalypse" (2004), implying that the virus escaped containment and infected the Earth. The third film is called "Extinction," implying that the virus did its job and humanity has become extinct. The arc is pretty clear. 

What comes after extinction? Well, the fourth film is called "Afterlife" (2010), following the now-dead humanity into Elysium. How apropos. Sadly, the fifth film in the series is not called "Resurrection" or "Reincarnation," but "Retribution" (2012), kind of breaking the spiritual cycle. Perhaps with "Retribution," humanity has become a gaggle of vengeful ghosts? Or perhaps not.

To celebrate this milestone, we’re doing a 6-week theme month of Diva/Anniversary worship (running all the way through Halloween), and we’re starting by revisiting a film we covered in one of our earliest episodes so that we can give it the proper, modern HQ treatment: Karyn Kusama‘s Jennifer’s Body (2009)!

In Jennifer’s Body, When popular girl Jennifer (Megan Fox) is possessed by a demon after a botched ritual, she turns a hungry eye on guys who never stood a chance with her before. While Jennifer satisfies her appetite for human flesh with the school’s male population, her best friend Needy (Amanda Seyfried) learns what’s happening and vows to put an end to the carnage.

Hell may be a teenage girl, but the occult taking over high school halls is nothing new. The 2009 film “Jennifer’s Body,” though, ushered in a new era of “female rage” being shown onscreen. And what better age to capture coming into power than being a teen?

Academy Award-winning “Juno” scribe Diablo Cody wrote the now-iconic feature, with Karyn Kusama (“Yellowjackets”) directing. The appropriately titled “Jennifer’s Body” hinges on how high school queen bee Jennifer (Megan Fox) wields her newfound sex appeal. Sure, she may look like a grown woman on the outside, but does teen Jennifer really know how to navigate adult situations? Not quite.

So when Jennifer sets her sights on seducing the lead singer (Adam Brody) of a band touring through town, it doesn’t totally go to plan. Turns out that the aforementioned rockers want to sacrifice a virgin, and Jennifer lies about having no sexual history whatsoever.

Megan Fox has received praise for her thoughtful performance in the upcoming sci-fi film “Subservience.” The movie tells the story of Alice, an android character portrayed with nuance by Fox. Director Sk Dale worked closely with Fox on this challenging role, made more difficult by its demanding physical and technical aspects.

In interviews, Dale described Fox’s remarkable memory and ability to learn lines quickly. Fox’s familiarity with Dale from their previous collaboration, 2021’s “Till Death,” helped the actress tackle the intimate scenes in “Subservience” with ease. As an android, Fox minimized blinking and movements to portray the inhuman qualities of her character. Dale utilized post-production effects to further enhance these robotic traits.

The director worked with Fox to push boundaries, especially in scenes showing damage or glitches to the android. Their goal was to craft a believable robotic performance while also allowing Fox to showcase her acting talents.

Directed by Adam Carter Rehmeier (Dinner in America) from a screenplay by first-time feature writer Tom Dean, a film titled Carolina Caroline is currently in production – but rather than filming in North or South Carolina, it’s being made in Kentucky. When you first look at the cast list as reported by Deadline, you might be led to believe that this is a horror project, because in the lead roles we have genre icons Samara Weaving and Kyle Gallner, who has been in the likes of Red, The Haunting in Connecticut, Jennifer’s Body, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Red State, The Walking Dead, The Cleanse, Alien Code, Ghosts of War, Smile, The Passenger; Mother, May I?; and the upcoming Smile sequel. But this one isn’t horror; it’s being described as a romantic crime thriller.

The International Cinematographers Guild (Icg) will recognize two acclaimed professionals at award ceremonies later this year. Mexican cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto will receive the Distinguished Filmmaker Award. M. David Mullen will receive the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Mentor Award.

Prieto has worked on blockbuster films and critically-acclaimed independents. His credits range from Martin Scorsese’s upcoming “Killers of the Flower Moon” to Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie.” Prieto first found success with director Alejandro González Iñárritu in 2000s films like “Babel,” “21 Grams,” and “Amores Perros.” He has shown versatility across genres with work on movies such as “The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Argo,” and “8 Mile.”

Prieto is set to make his directorial debut with an adaptation of Juan Rulfo’s novel “Pedro Paramo.” He also received a 2024 MTV Video Music Award nomination for his cinematography on a Taylor Swift music video. The Icg says Prieto represents excellence in his field.

Prieto’s next project–his feature film directorial debut–is an adaptation of the novel Pedro Paramo by Juan Rulfo, one of the most revered Mexican novels of the 20th century.

Killers of the Flower Moon and The Irishman cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto will be honored with the Distinguished Filmmaker Award at the 26th annual Emerging Cinematographer Awards (Eca), the International Cinematographers Guild (Icg) announced on Wednesday.

Cinematographer M. David Mullen will also be awarded the ASC Mentor Award.

Prieto has been nominated for four Academy Awards for his work on Killers of the Flower Moon, The Irishman, Silence and Brokeback Mountain. His other credits include Barbie, The Wolf of Wall Street, Argo and 8 Mile. He was also nominated for a 2024 MTV Video Music Award for his work on Taylor Swift’s “Fortnight” music video. His next project, his feature film directorial debut, is an adaptation of Juan Rulfo’s novel Pedro Paramo.
