Johnny Depp may be cancelled in the eyes of some fans, but he’s certainly not in the eyes of pal and longtime collaborator, director Tim Burton.
The duo have worked together on such projects as ‘Edward Scissorhands,’ ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,’ and there’s possibly still a lot more in store for them to do.

With just one movie, Tim Burton and Johnny Depp felt destined to work together, bringing a unique presence of gothic oddity to the screen. But it obviously wouldn’t just be Edward Scissorhands that they collaborated on. No, they would have a total of eight big screen pairings. But the most recent was 2012’s Dark Shadows, with Burton having done five movies without Depp since. So what gives? Will we ever see another Tim Burton / Johnny Depp movie?
Tim Burton is confident that there will be a place for Johnny Depp in a future film of his, telling IndieWire, “Well, I’m sure there will be [another collaboration].” But Burton was careful to note that his reason for not working with an actor is never personal. “I never feel like, oh, I’m going to use this and that actor. It usually has to be based on the project I’m working on.

Tim Burton may have reawakened the Ghost With the Most in the recently released sequel to his 1988 comedy-horror film “Beetlejuice,” but that didn’t seem to convince the filmmaker to revisit some of his other classics.
During a Q&a at the Marrakech International Film Festival on Saturday (via IndieWire), Burton dismissed the possibility of developing a sequel to 1990’s “Edward Scissorhands,” which starred Johnny Depp as the titular role.
“There are certain films I don’t want to make a sequel to,” Burton said. “I didn’t want to make a sequel to that because it felt like a one-off thing. I didn’t want to have a sequel for ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ because it also felt like a one-off thing. Certain things are best left on their own, and that, for me, is one of them.”

Director Tim Burton may be tight-lipped on his next project, a remake of “Attack of the 50 Foot Woman,” but during a red carpet interview at the Marrakech International Film Festival, he was forthcoming about why.
“One thing I learned very early on is until I’m actually on a set doing something, I don’t know if I’m doing it,” he told IndieWire. “I never like to talk about things too much. I’ve worked on so many projects, sometimes they happen, sometimes they don’t happen, so I don’t want to jinx anything. I mean, I was doing ‘Superman’ once. There was another project that I worked for a year on, and it didn’t happen. It’s quite traumatic, it’s quite emotional.”

Star Trek Origins is a go, and it'll tell the story of the earliest days of the franchise. It'll focus on the developing relations between humans and aliens; most likely focusing on the developing dynamic between humans and Vulcans. It sounds like it may be akin to the old sci-fi film/show Alien Nation in its presentation.
Funny enough, the show version of Alien Nation starred Gary Graham, who would feature on Star Trek: Enterprise as Solar.
With the film now officially in development, who are the people behind the project? Well, the director of the franchise is Toby Haynes, while long-time producer and writer Seth Grahame-Smith will write the story. A story that some fans are nervous about seeing. Yet, should they be?
What have Haynes and Grahame-Smith done and should that give fans pause or excitement about the project?

Actress Eva Green poses for Chapter II of the Roger Vivier “Express” campaign, in a new short film, directed by Andrea Danese and Nicolangelo Gelormini, for the fashion brand credited with handbags and the creation of the modern day ‘stiletto’ heel, declaring “…to wear dreams on one’s feet is to begin to give a reality to one’s dreams…” :
About her ongoing film career, Green said "...there are simply not enough good roles for women, and for the last 20 years it has been so male-dominated and continues to be so."
The French actress and model started her career in theater before making her film debut in 2003 in Bernardo Bertolucci's controversial "The Dreamers".
She achieved international recognition when she appeared in Ridley Scott's "Kingdom of Heaven" (2005) and portrayed 'Vesper Lynd' in the 'James Bond' film "Casino Royale" (2006).
In 2006, Green was awarded the 'BAFTA' Rising Star Award.

Prompted by the massive success of the gothic soap opera Dark Shadows, ABC released dozens of thrillers and horror movies under their Movie of the Week banner between 1969 and 1975. Starting in 1973, the network branched out into late-night programming intended to compete with talk show king Johnny Carson over on NBC, and the five feature-length telefilms collected as The Classic Ghosts by Kino Cult originally aired in that slot.
These telefilms were shot live on two-inch tape in a manner akin to daytime dramas, which does lead to the occasional flubbed line of dialogue. Furthering the comparison, two of the movies were directed by Lela Swift, who helmed over half of Dark Shadows’s approximately 1,200 episodes. Gloria Monty, who directed two others, went on to radically reshape the floundering soap General Hospital in the late ’70s. It’s notable that the creative team behind the telefilms were mostly women. You can have all of the AI you want, but no matter how many prompts you give it, can it ever truly replicate what the human mind can create? Maybe in some cases, but let’s face it, only Tim Burton can come up with a Tim Burton idea. This is not a guy that relies on what he finds on the web — in fact, it petrifies him.
Speaking with BBC, Tim Burton admitted, “Anybody who knows me knows I’m a bit of a technophobe. But I look at the internet, I found that I got quite depressed. It scared me because I started to go down a dark hole. So I try to avoid it, because it doesn’t make me feel good…I get depressed very quickly, maybe more quickly than other people. But it doesn’t take me much to start to click and start to short circuit.

It’s that time of year again, when it’s fun to give a scare, or even get a scare. Many TV programs offer up a special Halloween episode, some with a light tone and others adding a little mystery, but some TV shows are spooky year round.

That's when the Michael Keaton-led sequel, with which /Film's own Jacob Hall declared that Burton "gets his mojo back," will make its way to digital platforms like Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV, where it'll be available to rent or purchase with plenty of extras.
The current pre-order price for a digital version of the movie appears to be $24.99 on both platforms mentioned above, with Amazon touting its version as the "Bonus X-Ray Edition" and specifying that it includes an Ultra HD format. Buy the movie digitally and you'll also get a bunch of goodies including a commentary from Burton, a feature on the stop-motion art of the movie, and intriguingly titled special extras like "Shrinkers,...

Late-night horror series The Classic Ghosts has rarely been seen since airing on ABC’s Wide World of Mystery in 1973, but that’s about to change.
The UCLA Film & Television Archive has preserved all five installments, coming to Blu-ray on October 29 via Kino Lorber’s Kino Cult line. Watch the exclusive trailer below.
Produced by broadcast pioneer Jacqueline Babbin, The Classic Ghosts was celebrated upon its debut for being made by a predominantly female crew, including trailblazing television directors Gloria Monty (General Hospital) and Lela Swift (Studio One).
Shot on videotape in the style of a soap opera, with expressive and colorful production design, The Classic Ghosts has an immediacy and otherworldliness akin to Dark Shadows — not surprising since two of the directors (Swift and Henry Kaplan) directed hundreds of episodes of the classic horror TV series.

Tim Burton has always been an outlier in Hollywood. He's a filmmaker with a distinct, peculiar aesthetic and set of interests, yet his movies have broad appeal and are remarkably consistent in the way they perform financially. Even Burton's weakest franchise films bear the sort of directorial hallmarks that are often missing from tentpoles in the 21st century. Indeed, say what you will against his "Dark Shadows," but only Burton could have enough pull to get a $150 million movie reboot of a cult '60s soap opera oddity green-lit in 2012 while also making it precisely the way he wanted. It's the same reason the critically-derided horror-comedy has found its share of defenders.
Be that as it may, having to deal with the relentless friction between creativity and commerce has taken its toll on Burton in the past. His 1996 sci-fi...

Tim Burton rose during a very peculiar time in popular culture. The terse, depressive adult dramas of the 1970s had given way to the ultra-slick, spectacle-heavy blockbusters of the 1980s as a new generation of adventure films entered the marketplace, helmed by precocious filmmakers who spent their youths in actual film schools. At the same time, the financial and cultural conservatism of the Reagan administration had amplified the voices of rebellious punkers and enterprising artistic weirdos who wanted nothing to do with the commercial world. The odd circumstances -- an increase of money paired with a general antiestablishment malaise -- were just right for anti-mainstream freaks to break into the public eye.
All of a sudden, filmmakers like David Lynch, Tobe Hooper, and Paul Verhoeven could make big hits, and Tim Burton could be embraced by the public at large. Burton, in particular, could not have risen to fame in any other epoch.

It’s been 15 years since audiences were introduced to Mystic Falls and its vampires, love triangles and teenage drama. And still, The Vampire Diaries holds a special place for many viewers.
Vampire Diaries premiered on The CW on Sept. 10, 2009, and ran for eight seasons,. Now, to celebrate the milestone anniversary, showrunner Julie Plec looks back on the series she created with Kevin Williamson and how it launched a supernatural franchise.
She recalls wanting to “tell a really emotional story that was sexy and romantic and scary and all the things,” while also creating “something that felt timeless, that could live on and continue to feel like anybody, any generation at any time can connect to it.”

And to accomplish that, Plec and Williamson knew they had to build a solid team that could produce stories with “creative integrity and that we’re deeply emotional and highly entertaining.”

Johnny Depp once collaborated alongside Helena Bonham Carter in the Tim Burton feature Sweeney Todd. But one sequence required Carter to get a bit too close with her co-star. And it seemed to bother Carter more than it bothered Burton.

Carter played Depp’s accomplice in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Although Carter and Burton were married at the time, Burton was skeptical about casting his significant other in the film. Still, she gave his wife an opportunity like he would any other actor, refusing special treatment.

This article contains mild spoilers for "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice."
Ever since the first "Beetlejuice" escalated the obsession the ghostly Maitland couple had with Harry Belafonte to them trying to rid their home of the obnoxious Deetz family by making them do a possession lip sync dance number to "Banana Boat (Day-o)," it seemed like a given that a follow-up setpiece had to happen if "Beetlejuice" ever got a sequel. Of course, follow-ups to gags can be tricky, especially in comedy sequels. Some try to go bigger and wilder, such as the climactic news team battle in "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues." Others try and undercut or subvert the expectation, like when Phoebe Cates' Kate starts delivering a monologue about some trauma that happened to her on Lincoln's birthday and is cut off in "Gremlins 2: The New Batch." Others still merely pick up where the bit left off in the first film,...

Michelle Pfeiffer plays the McU's Janet Van Dyne and, following the original Wasp's return from the Quantum Realm in Ant-Man and The Wasp, finally took centre stage in last year's Quantumania.
Of course, as we're sure you're all aware, Pfeiffer's first major superhero role was 1992's Batman Returns where she delivered an iconic take on Selina Kyle, a.k.a. Catwoman.
A third movie set in Tim Burton's gothic take on Gotham City never became a reality and neither did Batman Beyond (which was set to revisit Bruce Wayne and Selina's romance in the present day). Now, Pfeiffer has taken to Instagram to share a glimpse inside her original script for Batman Returns...when it was known simply as Batman II.
There are a few fun Easter Eggs in the pages the actor posted, including the fact Gotham City's Mayor referred to Batman as "The Caped Crusader" in this early draft.

The path to finally getting a “Beetlejuice” sequel off the ground started on the set of the Netflix series “Wednesday.”
“Wednesday” creators and showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar would meet with Tim Burton, the show’s executive producer and the director of the first half of the season, every morning during production. They would go over the scenes that were supposed to be shot that day, just to talk them through. But then they got a text one day from Burton. He wanted to meet them after the shooting day had wrapped.
“We thought something was wrong,” Gough admitted in an interview with TheWrap.
But something wasn’t wrong. Instead, Burton wanted to talk to them about something – a sequel to his 1988 hit “Beetlejuice.”

Tim Burton, who turned goth into chic and made nightmares fun, has received a much-deserved star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. With Beetlejuice Beetlejuice now out in theaters (read our review here), there was no better moment for his showtime.
Tim Burton received his star – the 2,788th on the Hollywood Walk of Fame – on Tuesday, with a crowd gathering to show off their love for the filmmaker. Also in attendance to pay tribute were frequent collaborators Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder, who of course all worked together on 1988’s Beetlejuice and its much-anticipated sequel.
In his speech, Michael Keaton remembered their greatest box office achievement, 1989’s Batman, which was the second of four collaborations, preceding the aforementioned Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and Dumbo (although he’d probably rather forget about that one). Keaton, as many do, gave Tim Burton credit for showing the box office potential of comic book movies. “There...

The news that Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood director Quentin Tarantino was planning to direct a Star Trek movie received an overwhelmingly positive response from Trekkies. Star Trek 4 had completely stalled and his R-Rated take on the franchise was bound to be unlike anything we'd seen before.
The project never came to fruition, with Paramount Pictures now focusing on a new prequel movie with Andor filmmaker Toby Haynes attached to direct from a screenplay by Dark Shadows writer Seth Grahame-Smith.
The studio reportedly intends to still make the "final chapter" of the Chris Pine-led era of Star Trek movies, with Steve Yockey (The Flight Attendant) attached to write a new draft of that screenplay. As for Tarantino's scrapped plans, it all goes back to his desire to make 10, and only 10, movies as a filmmaker.
"It's never going to happen," he tells Bill Maher in the video below (via SFFGazette.

For audiences, the four seasons of Robert and Michelle King’s “Evil” have been the stuff of nightmares. For Oscar-winning prosthetics artist Joel Harlow, it was the stuff of childhood dreams.
“This is the high water mark of my professional career in terms of artist fulfillment,” Harlow told IndieWire over Zoom a few days before the series finale aired August 22 on Paramount+. “This is what I wanted to do as a kid.”
Harlow means that literally. In most instances, the “Evil” script would merely say, “Joel will deliver us something terrifying.” And starting with the sleep paralysis demon George, that’s just what he did.
“Evil” followed three assessors for the Catholic church — a priest (Mike Colter), an agnostic psychiatrist (Katja Herbers), and an atheist scientist (Aasaf Mandvi) as they evaluated a case of the week to determine if an exorcism was needed while battling demons in their personal lives.

Of the many honors and recognitions he’s received over his more than 40-year career, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is not one that Tim Burton ever expected. But his reaction to the news perfectly matches the playful, macabre sensibility that has driven his 20 films to almost $4.5 billion in worldwide box office receipts and made a household name out of a filmmaker who has constantly been perceived as an outsider.
“I remember, I first thought they were gravestones before I knew what they were,” Burton tells Variety. “I grew up in California where it’s all flat tombstones, so that’s why I mistook it for those. But I realized fairly early on that Desi Arnaz and John Wayne were not buried underneath [Hollywood Boulevard].”
With films like “Sleepy Hollow,” “Corpse Bride,” Dark Shadows” and “Frankenweenie” under his belt, the director knows a thing or two about the living and the dead.

Some movie directors have a habit of saying things that come back to haunt them. Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice is finally getting a sequel and, surprisingly, that sequel was directed by the Ed Wood director himself. Interestingly, Burton didn’t like the idea of making a Beetlejuice sequel or remake back in the day. Here is what he’s said about Beetlejuice Beetlejuice more recently.
Tim Burton refused to make a sequel to ‘Beetlejuice’ or 1 of his other movies
During a 2007 interview with Total Film, Burton was asked how he felt about the possibility that one of his movies would get remade. “Yikes!” he said. “I don’t know about that.
“I mean, I’ve often resisted re-visiting,” he added. “Like in the case of [The Nightmare Before Christmas] and Beetlejuice, they asked me to do sequels and I just said ‘No.’ I wanted to keep the integrity of those particular things.

Actor Helena Bonham Carter worked with her ex-husband Tim Burton on a number of films. But there was one movie where Burton wasn’t too keen on casting his former spouse like he did for other features.
Tim Burton wanted to work with actors other than Helena Bonham Carter for ‘Dark Shadows’ Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter | Mike Marsland/WireImage
Burton and Carter collaborated frequently after meeting each other for Planet of the Apes. The 2001 sci-fi feature not only started the tradition of the pair working together. It also sparked a long relationship between the two. Some of the films they worked on since getting together were Sweeney Todd and Corpse Bride.
But 2012’s Dark Shadow was a feature that Burton was initially against casting Carter in. The movie was a more contemporary take on the television series of the same name, which Burton grew up a fan of.

Editor’s note: this list was originally published in October 2022. It has since been updated with new selections.
If horror’s limitless capacity for remakes, re-imaginings, and spinoffs teaches us anything, it’s that our nightmares never really change. Since before “Nosferatu” darkened the silent film scene in 1922 — heck, even before Bram Stoker terrified readers with “Dracula” in 1897 — vampires have transfixed audiences with their chilling blend of romance and menace. Movies like “Twilight” and “Interview with the Vampire” are memorable for weaving epic undead dramas for the big screen, but vampire sagas have arguably seen more creative permutations on TV, with whole casts of blood-sucking stars appearing in shows like “True Blood” and “Castlevania.”
The best vampire TV shows examine the archetypal underpinnings of the gothic-infused subgenre by referencing them in unexpected ways. Classic situational comedies like “Dark Shadows” make entertaining light of garlic, coffins, and the (pun intended) stakes of it all.

Johnny Depp’s breakout performance in Edward Scissorhands will remain one of Tim Burton’s all-time favorites. Several suggestions came Burton’s way for the lead role in the film at the time, but Depp had always been his choice for the role. However, the popular demand for the role did concern the Pirates of the Caribbean actor and his imposter syndrome kicked in.

Depp was so wrong about the inner thoughts that almost pulled him away from the role. He snatched the role from the likes of Tom Cruise and Tom Hanks and delivered one of the most eccentrically amazing performances.

Despite his imposter syndrome, Johnny Depp beat out some of the biggest names in film (and music) for his breakout role.
The Academy Award nominee revealed he beat out the likes of Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise and even Michael Jackson for his eponymous role in Tim Burton’s 1990 gothic fantasy Edward Scissorhands.
He told director Tara Wood that Cruise “was not far away from actually playing Edward Scissorhands — true story” as he reflected on the film for an untitled docuseries about Burton, according to People.
Depp ultimately landed the role of the loving outcast, who was created by a scientist (Vincent Price) with scissors in place of his hands. When his creator dies, a local woman (Dianne Wiest) takes Edward into her suburban home, where he falls in love with her daughter (Winona Ryder) and faces ostracism from the townspeople.
The actor said Burton and Caroline Thompson’s script “passed through everything,...

A playwright-turned-screenwriter, John Logan made a name for himself — and earned three Oscar nominations — working with some of the biggest names in the business, in genres ranging period dramas, sword-and-sandal epics and spy thrillers.
His credits include Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator, Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd, Oliver Stone’s Any Given Sunday, Ridley Scott’s Gladiator, Ed Zwick and Tom Cruise’s The Last Samurai, and two James Bond movies directed by Sam Mendes, to name a few.
Logan was, in his own words, shaped by two early influences: William Shakespeare and monsters. The Great Bard led him to drama, theatre, and a career in writing. But even before that, there were monsters. He was raised on the fantastical world of Dark Shadows, the horror movies of Universal and Hammer, Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine, the Aurora monster modeling kits, and Marvel’s Tomb of Dracula comic books. Paramount Pictures has a few successful franchises, but the studio's apparent inability to do more with Star Trek is beyond confusing.
When J.J. Abrams relaunched the franchise in 2009, the stage was set for it to become a mainstream property, something which looked increasingly likely when the sequels - Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond - were also moderate box office hits. Unfortunately, Star Trek 4 has been stuck in development hell for several years.
Filmmakers such as Quentin Tarantino, Matt Shakman, Lindsey Beer, and Geneva Robertson-Dworet are just some of the names who have been attached to the movie in recent years, with none of them ultimately sticking around.
Now, with it seemingly no closer to becoming a reality, it seems Paramount's next prequel project is finally taking shape.
