Jonah Hex is based on a comic book character created by writer John Albano and artist Tony DeZuniga and published by DC Comics. The storyline and screenplay for the movie was written by William Farmer, Mark Neveldine, and Brian Taylor.

Jonah Hex is a wild west character that first appeared in DC Comics' All-Star Western comics in 1972, who proved popular enough to have the title renamed Weird Western Tales. The character was later given his own comic series in 1977 and lasted for 92 issues as the last of the great American Wild West comic book series. In the comics, Jonah is meant to be a subversion of the cliche cleancut noble Western hero as a surly and ruthless old west bounty hunter with massive scarring on his face which hides his heroic code of honor. Being a Western character in the main DC Comics setting, he has met superheroes from modern times, had a short lived sequel series where he was flung into a post-apocalyptic future where he was a Mad Max like drifter and fought supernatural menaces in mini-series published under DC's Vertigo imprint. He currently appears in his own series which, no longer restrained by the Comics Code Authority, is grittier than ever before. Prior to the production of this live-action film, Jonah Hex has appeared in a number of animated adaptations of DC characters.
