Hey, Sean, it’s Evan.” That’s how the phone calls always started with the late Evan Wright. What followed were long, twisting conversations that could last for hours. Evan gave to get. He wanted to dig into your life and was willing to share his inner dialogue and past, too. It was a fair trade-off. I wasn’t special; Evan was like this with everyone. It’s what made him such a gifted reporter — he wanted to know the secrets and thoughts of anyone who crossed his path. But...

Socialite-turned-businesswoman Paris Hilton turned heads late in June when she bluntly testified to the House Ways and Means Committee about being sexually abused and “force-fed pills” after her parents shipped her off at 16 years old to the Provo School for so-called troubled teens. Of course, turning heads and grabbing headlines is the point for Hilton. But here, the attention she garnered was political and personal, as over the past five years, she’s become the famous face representing thousands of activists dead set on taking down the billion-dollar troubled teen industry that’s featured in filmmaker Tara Malone’s new documentary, which is trending this week on Max.
For Malone, who spoke with The Hollywood Reporter by telephone as her series was trending on Max, will always be an inspiring catalyst for the growing movement seen in her three-part, three-hour series, Teen Torture, Inc. Weaving together survival tales from generations...

Evan Wright, a writer and journalist whose 2004 book on the Iraq War, Generation Kill, was adapted into an HBO miniseries, died July 12 in Los Angeles by suicide, his family confirmed.
Born in Ohio, Wright earned a degree from Vassar College before entering journalism. In the mid-‘90s, Wright worked for Hustler, serving as entertainment editor and reviewer. He later wrote for Vanity Fair and Rolling Stone, developing a knack for immersion journalism, spending long periods with people or a subculture to gather information.
Wright covered Neo-Nazis, organized crime figures, and others, but his best-known work came as a result of his military reporting. Embedded with the U.S. Marines during the 2003 invasion of Iraq, his accounts of the war for Rolling Stone earned Wright a National Magazine Award for Reporting.

David Simon is developing a new series at HBO, Variety has learned exclusively.
Simon is attached to write and executive produce the drama project, currently titled “The System.” Lily Thorne and Larissa MacFarquhar will also write and co-executive produce, with Kiese Laymon also attached to write.
The project is based on a series of New Yorker articles written by MacFarquhar. The official description states that the show “will examine the foster care and child protective service systems from the viewpoint of family court judges and lawyers, as well as social workers, caretakers, mothers, and the children themselves, and will probe the risks and benefits of removing children from families of origin.”
Should the project move forward, it would be Simon’s ninth HBO series. He is perhaps best known for his work on the critically-acclaimed series “The Wire,” which aired for five seasons at the premium cabler. He most recently...

In August 2001, Kyle Hausmann-Stokes had just graduated from high school and wanted to escape the confines of his native Wisconsin. So he enlisted in the Army. Then 9/11 happened, and the teen would eventually head to Iraq, where he became a paratrooper. As his three-year enlistment was about to end, he was hit with a stop-loss order, an involuntary extension of active duty.
“I’m crushed. I have these big plans to go to film school,” Hausmann-Stokes remembers. “I get a call one night that the colonel wants to see me in his office. I was known throughout the battalion as the film guy. I was always secretly making films of our airborne jumps and our jungle warfare training. The colonel said, ‘I think you might be destined for something different than going to war with us right now. I’ve made arrangements for you and only you to be exempt from this stop-loss.

Exclusive: Veteran British director Susanna White has revealed she’s working on a feature film based on her teenage life set against changes in the fashion world, as she gears up for today’s launch of Apple TV+ period drama The Buccaneers.
White is developing an untitled script for the BFI, the first time she has written a feature script herself, and the plot is based on her personal coming of age story. “It’s the story of me at 13, set in the world of fashion in early 1970s,” she told Deadline in an interview. “It’s very fun, sexy and hopefully moving.”
We hear the film will follow 13-year-old Gingernut as she grows up with the fur trade’s decline playing out in the background. The plot will see her trying to make sense of her parents’ dysfunctional relationship and include themes of family, growing up, betrayal, love and loss.

Keeping it in the family is very much a Hollywood tradition at this point, and in the 21st century acting families are still thriving. Whether it be Cuba Gooding Jr.’s son Mason joining the cast of the last two Scream movies, Lily-Rose Depp leading The Idol, Maya Hawke becoming a fan favorite in Stranger Things, or Ethan Peck (grandson of Gregory) roaming the bridge of the Enterprise in Star Trek, there’s always a new generation of nepo babies lurching from crib to screen.

Jon Huertas was in Puerto Rico when he learned that he was suddenly unemployed—the series he starred in, Castle, had just been canceled by ABC after eight seasons. As a seasoned actor, he knew this was par for the course. But little did he know that what was coming up next for him would change his life and his career. Huertas went on to land the role of Miguel Rivas on the NBC hit This Is Us across the show’s six seasons, and through that new opportunity, was able to make his dream of becoming a director a reality.
What was the audition process like to get the role of Miguel in This Is Us?

Ah, how much it can hurt to be really, really, really ridiculously good-looking.
“Zoolander” alum Alexander Skarsgård told The Sunday Times that it took years to be taken seriously as an actor due to his movie-star looks.
“I don’t really know if that was the reason I wasn’t getting roles,” the “Big Little Lies” star said. “Starting out in Sweden, there was stuff about being tall and blond. But most people here are tall and blond.”
Skarsgård continued, “Still, after my first job, I was on a stupid ‘sexy hunky hot list’ and then people didn’t take me seriously. If you want characters with depth but have been labeled ‘a dude who takes his shirt off,’ you’re not going to get those offers.”
Skarsgård has been named Sweden’s Sexiest Man Alive five times…and counting. And heavy wore that crown: “I was questioning...

With a reputation for nuanced color tones and tweaks that may evoke a suffocating Buckingham Palace in “The Crown” or a ghostly time shift in “Last Night in Soho,” Asa Shoul, senior colorist at Warner Bros. De Lane Lea in London, is increasingly tough to book.
A veteran of post production on some 50 feature films, Shoul began at Framestore in 1994 as a telecine colorist before going on to score a BAFTA TV craft award for Netflix hit series “The Crown,” and has worked on Emmy-winning history miniseries “Shackleton” and “Generation Kill” for HBO.
With a body of work also including “The Constant Gardener,” “United 93,” “Ex Machina” and “Baby Driver,” it’s no surprise Shoul is one of the 14 nominees for a new EnergaCamerimage Film Festival prize, the FilmLight color awards, an honor the U.K. post company launched to highlight the critical work of the industry’s top colorists.

“The Comey Rule” premiered on Showtime over two nights on September 27 and 28 of last year telling the story of James Comey’s (played by two-time Emmy winner Jeff Daniels) tenure as the head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The two-part limited series frames Comey’s time as the head of the FBI through two of the most high profile investigations the agency conducted. The first is the investigation into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server while serving as secretary and Comey’s decision to announce that the investigation was being reopened (due to a connection with former congressman Anthony Weiner) less than two weeks before the 2016 presidential election. The second part of the series examines Comey’s navigation of the agency’s investigation into the campaign of President Donald Trump (played by Emmy winner Brendan Gleeson) and possible connections it had with the Russian government.

David Simon is an Emmy-winning writer and producer whom critics have praised for decades, but to date the only Emmys he has won were Best Miniseries and Best Movie/Mini Writing for “The Corner” back in 2000. Can he finally get back into the winner’s circle with his latest limited series “The Plot Against America” with its timely subject matter?
That’s right, Simon hasn’t won an Emmy in 20 years, which means he didn’t win for “The Wire,” he didn’t win for “Treme,” he didn’t win for “Generation Kill,” he didn’t win for “Show Me a Hero,” and he hasn’t won for “The Deuce.” Of all those slights, “The Wire” probably looks the most egregious in hindsight since it is remembered as one of the most accomplished dramas of television’s post-“Sopranos” golden era. Creative geniuses David Simon and Ed Burns have struck thought-provoking gold again.
This time, Simon and Burns set their sights on xenophobia and fascism starting on The Plot Against America Season 1 Episode 1.
No, the six-episode HBO miniseries isn't set in Donald Trump's America (although it certainly could be). However, it's clear that this allegory targets a divided modern America.
Instead, the series, based on the Philip Roth novel of the same name, is set in an alternative America, where hero aviator Charles Lindbergh rides an isolationist, fascist platform to the Presidency in 1940.
The story is effectively told through the experiences of a Jewish family who start out enjoying their lives in Newark, N.J.
Herman Levin, an insurance agent, was the head of the household and was living the American dream. He had just been offered a promotion at work, and was mulling the idea of moving his family...

Exclusive: Rome and Generation Kill executive producer Anne Thomopoulos is reuniting with her former HBO boss Chris Albrecht at Legendary Global.
Thomopoulos has joined the joint venture between Legendary and Albrecht as a partner, and comes from CAA’s Global Television department. She has been tasked with focusing on identifying and acquiring international content that Legendary Global can develop, produce and finance for local and global platforms.
Thomopoulos and Albrecht are reuniting after a successful run together at HBO, where Albrecht served as chairman and CEO and Thomopoulos created and oversaw the network’s dramatic series department. Kicking off with Oz, she first established HBO’s miniseries division with projects including From the Earth to the Moon, Band of Brothers and The Corner, before going on to exec produce Rome and Generation Kill.
She subsequently served as exec producer on Camelot for Starz, where she had a first-look producing deal.

HBO has released the full official trailer for its upcoming limited series “The Plot Against America,” set to premiere this March.
Starring Zoe Kazan, Morgan Spector, Winona Ryder, and John Turturro, the six-part series comes from executive producers and longtime collaborators David Simon and Ed Burns. Based on the prescient novel by Philip Roth, “The Plot Against America” takes place in an alternate-history version of America, in which the United States turns toward fascism during the Second World War. The story is told through the eyes of a New Jersey working-class Jewish family, as aviation hero and xenophobic populist Charles Lindbergh (Ben Cole) runs for President of the United States and wins.
HBO released the teaser trailer for the limited series back at the end of January, revealing just how tense things would get in the lead-up to Lindbergh’s election. The official trailer, however, includes more about the aftermath...
