Glen A. Larson's "Battlestar Galactica" has evolved into a sizable franchise since the original series (of the same name) aired in 1978. No matter the medium, these stories always find their way back to the Twelve Colonies — a group of planets representing humanity during the Cylon War — as it falls under attack. The attackers in question are the Cylons, who wish to exterminate the human race at all costs, and to this end, they destroy the Colonies, save for a small group that manages to escape. Among the remaining spacecrafts, only the Battlestar Galactica, which doubles as a battleship and a carrier, is able to offer refuge to the survivors in search of a mysterious new colony: Earth.
Yep, this is a really cool premise, and "Battlestar Galactica" explores the age-old themes of morality, survival, conflict, and faith through an intriguing narrative lens. The techno-jargon employed throughout is not ornamental,...

With its shared DNA from Ronald D. Moore, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine can be seen as the predecessor of Battlestar Galactica's 2004 reboot. Both sci-fi series are acclaimed, with DS9 holding a 91% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and BSG even higher with a 95% Fresh rating. Premiering in 1993, Deep Space Nine is a spinoff of Star Trek: The Next Generation that ran 7 seasons in syndication. Battlestar Galactica launched a decade later, first as a 2003 Sci-Fi Channel miniseries that spawned a 2004 ongoing series running for 4 seasons, as well as a prequel, Caprica, and spinoffs Battlestar Galactica: Razor, Battlestar Galactica: The Plan, and Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome.
Ronald D. Moore joined the writer's room of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine after achieving great success on Star Trek: The Next Generation, including co-writing with Brannon Braga Tng's acclaimed series finale, "All Good Things..." and the feature films Star Trek Generations and Star Trek: First Contact.

Made-for-tv movies have developed from their Hallmark stereotype in recent years, thanks to the rise of companies such as HBO. Although these films feature lower budgets and smaller casts than larger productions, they offer directors and actors greater freedom – leading them toward more successful results.

Lucasfilm has announced new video game projects coming in the near future, including a sequel to Jedi: Fallen Order.

The rapper Belly was born in the Palestinian West Bank and moved to Ottawa as a kid. While he’s a big-ticket rapper by today’s standards — Belly’s list of collaborations includes stars like The Weeknd and Nas — music was the last thing on his mind as a teenager. A familiar rap origin story, he and his friends in Ottawa used to hustle to make ends meet. It might explain the rapper’s natural affinity for street-level entrepreneurs like Jay-Z, whom he now counts as one of his personal friends and mentors.

Where did everybody go?
They certainly weren’t watching the Friday night Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony. The audience dropped to about 17 million, down 37 percent from 26.5 million viewers for the Rio de Janeiro opening in 2016. (Though Saturday was better.)
We know they weren’t at the movies. The box-office dropped 25 percent from last week, as Old and Snake Eyes had weak openings, and Black Widow continued its precipitous fall.
Streaming, or social media? Kinda, sorta, maybe. But it’s hard not to notice that Netflix last week reported a loss of about 400,000 domestic subscribers, while Twitter, though up nicely from a year ago, saw a decline of about 1 million in its active user base, compared to last quarter.
In the media world, it’s beginning to feel like that wispy old song from 1965. Everyone’s Gone To The Moon.
For a while, case-by-case analytics—plus a vague, obligatory reference to Covid...

(Warning: This post, which was originally published July 16, contains spoilers through the finale of “Dr. Death.”)
In Peacock’s limited series “Dr. Death,” the existence and significance of the email Dr. Christopher Duntsch (portrayed by Joshua Jackson) sends to his nurse and lover Kim Morgan (Grace Gummer) the night before he performs an ill-fated spinal surgery on his friend Jerry Summers (Dominic Burgess) is revealed much earlier than the letter’s actual contents.
Due to the twisty nature of the based-on-true-events show’s dual timelines detailing Duntsch’s horrifying missteps as a neurosurgeon and his subsequent trial for the crimes against his patients, viewers get even more teases about how vital the email, which has the subject line “Occam’s Razor,” is going to be for putting Duntsch behind bars before we have enough evidence to understand why.

Merely two years after kickstarting a supposed new franchise, the Hanzo the Razor saga came to an end, with the release of the third and final production of the series, “Hanzo the Razor, Who’s Got the Gold?” In keeping with the tradition of the first two, this too had a different director at the helm in Yoshi Inoue. However, Yasuzo Masumura, the director of the second story, would stay on as the scriptwriter even if the directorial duties were handed over to Inoue, with this ending up being the final feature film he’d do.
Things kick off when Hanzo Itami’s assistants Devil-Fire and Viper encounter a female ghost while fishing at a lake and run to Hanzo to inform him of the same. Unperturbed and excited by the idea of catching and having sex with a “ghost”, Hanzo sets off to investigate and upon catching said ghost,...

Less than a year after the success of “Sword of Justice”, Shintaro Katsu returned as the lawman with an enormous penis, a disgust for corruption and very questionable interrogation techniques for a new mystery, this time helmed by none other than Yasuzo Masumura.
Early on, we see Hanzo Itami run into government treasurer Lord Okubu while chasing two thieves with his assistants Devil-Fire and Viper. Once again, Hanzo stresses on his dislike for corrupt officials in this encounter, which then gives way for the mystery central to the story. These two thieves, as it turns out, were running away from a nearby rice mill after discovering a half-naked dead woman there. Upon investigating, Hanzo deduces that the death was in fact not a murder but the result of a botched illegal abortion. This leads Hanzo into uncovering, once again, a conspiracy going way high, this time involving shamanic rituals,...

With the Zatoichi series running out of steam (there would be only two more of those releasing after 1972), actor/producer/director Shintaro Katsu and his newly formed production house Katsu Productions were looking to kickstart a new series of chanbara films as leading vehicles for the star, as well as to keep the company functioning. For this purpose, they turned their eye towards a gekiga (Japanese version of a graphic novel) by writer Kazuo Koike, an outlandish tale of an Edo-era law enforcer. For the first one, Katsu called upon Kenji Misumi, the director with the most directing credits on the Zatoichi features, and regular cinematographer Chikashi Makiura to lend their vision to this new tale. If, however, you go into the Hanzo films expecting anything similar to Zatoichi, you’re in for a very rude surprise!

The Match Factory is taking a strong slate to the European Film Market, including two world premieres: Anne Zohra Berrached’s “Copilot,” which is in the Berlin Film Festival’s Panorama section, and Christian Schwochow’s “Je Suis Karl,” which is in Berlinale Special. Also in the festival program is Dash Shaw’s “Cryptozoo,” the critically acclaimed adult animation awarded at Sundance, which is in the Generation lineup.
Berrached, whose “24 Weeks” played in Berlinale Competition in 2016, is back at the festival with “Copilot,” a bold feature set in the mid 90s, an era of optimism, when the conflicts of the old-world order seemed to dissolve, and long-lasting peace seemed achievable. Actor and boxer Florian Munteanu is set to play the villain Razor Fist in the upcoming Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, but he might not be a baddie you've heard of up until now. Razor Fist, like many of the heroes and villains in the Marvel comics, isn't a title held by just one person. The one thing all Razor Fists have in common? They're enemies of Shang-Chi. Marvel hasn't revealed which incarnation of the supervillain will be the baddie in the upcoming film (although we have a guess), but he's almost certainly one of these guys.
The original Razor Fist was William Young, a mercenary, assassin, and guard hired by ambitious crime lord Carlton Velcro. Velcro mutilated Young to make him a more formidable foe, surgically replacing his hands with "hands" made of steel blades. Young fought against Shangi-Chi at Velcro's command, but he lost and...

There’s been so much mythology surrounding “The Mandalorian’s” Baby Yoda (The Child), thanks to co-star Werner Herzog’s outspoken support of the puppet, that it’s hard to determine what’s practical or CG about its performance. The truth is, the 50-year-old, 16-inch infant companion to bounty hunter Mando (Pedro Pascal) was always intended to be a hybrid character, though the original plan was to lean more heavily on animation whenever possible.
That is, until creator Jon Favreau and the rest of the team witnessed the full extent of the puppet’s charm and capabilities early on during the shooting of Season 1. “Initially, the puppet was going to be in a supporting role, and it was going to be a CG character,” said John Rosengrant, co-founder and special effects supervisor at Legacy Effects.

3.5 History Rhymes
From the outset, History Rhymes was a much slicker and tighter narrative than we’ve been graced with so far this season.
The centre-piece is the often turbulent relationship between Nolan and Irisa, and how they’re now bonded together to share a common memory collection.
It might seem somewhat late in the process to give Nolan more backstory, but as this progressed, his failings and Irisa's were better revealed. As it went on, I began to wonder if Irisa is actually more guilt-ridden than Nolan, but surely the point is that only these two characters can understand the pain of the other, even if they’re not exactly bonding right now.
The only problem with the memory sequences was that taken out...

Well, I finished rewatching Ronald D. Moore’s Battlestar Galactica.
The most popular question (dissatisfaction?) I remember floating around the message boards connected with the finale of BSG was: “What, or who, was the returned-from-the-dead Kara Thrace, a.k.a. Starbuck?” And I also remember that there was a lot of frustration and unhappy people who were really angry with Mr. Moore for not giving a black-and-white answer. I suppose these dissatisfied viewers wanted to see an extension of Kara’s final scene with Lee Adama in which, in their imagination, she would say – sort of a Spoiler Ahead!

Sometimes, there’s a movie project that just doesn’t go away. They rumble on in the background for decades, with concepts kept alive only by the sheer willpower of those dedicated individuals involved. Battlestar Galactica is one such project – but now, it seems like it’s one step closer to fruition as Transcendence writer Jack Paglen has been hired to deliver a script.
Created by Glen A. Larson (Knight Rider, Magnum P.I, Quincy M.E) as a science fiction TV series in 1978, Battlestar Galactica ran for one season – ending in April 1979. It featured the premise that would provide the basis for every iteration of the show that followed – that our future humanity has migrated to a distant area of the galaxy, known as the Twelve Colonies, from where they have been defending themselves against a cybernetic race known as The Cylons. During a vicious attack, human survivors flee aboard spaceships,...

Cinephiles go gaga over Wong Kar-wai. When he’s at his best his films have a dreamlike quality to them, blooming with narrative puzzles and visual beauty that just scream “cinema classic.” It’s no wonder then that his film In the Mood For Love is the most recent film of them all to show up on Sight & Sound’s definitive “Greatest of All Time” poll from last year. But now, after production troubles and seemingly endless release delays, he presents his epic The Grandmaster, the story of the martial arts master named Ip Man who is known to Western audiences as the guy who taught Bruce Lee. Apparently there are various cuts of the film out there with varying runtimes and excised footage with the general consensus being that the original Hong Kong cut is the superior version. What I talk about in this review is the Us cut...

La-la Land Records Re-engages In The Cylon Wars With Two New Soundtracks Composed By Bear McCreary Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome on March 12th
Caprica: Original Television Soundtrack in April
La-La Land Records announces the release of two new soundtracks Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome on March 12th and Caprica: Original Television Soundtrack in April. Bear McCreary (The Walking Dead, Battlestar Galactica) composed the music for both series.
“In scoring the Battlestar Galactica prequels Caprica and Blood & Chrome, I returned to the unique combination of world and orchestral sounds that defined my previous score,” McCreary described. “But, both prequels had their own distinct approach. Caprica was interlaced with delicate chamber orchestra textures, solo harp and other-worldly source songs. Blood & Chrome is energized by heavy distorted-synthesizers and searing electric guitar performances. Listeners will hear, however, that all three series have a common musical DNA.”

Blood and Chrome takes place during the First Cylon War and features an origin story for BSG’s Admiral William Adama. In this prequel, young Adama, recently graduated from the Academy,...

Well, holy frak. The sequel has a release date.
Entertainment Weekly reports that Blood and Chrome will be released online on Machinima Prime's YouTube Channel in ten 7-12-minute installments starting this Friday, November 9.
The full two-hour pilot will air on Syfy early next year, and an unrated version will be released on home video some time after that.
Refresher course from EW (because it's been a while):
For those who haven’t followed the B&C saga, the project was originally developed as a series for Syfy following the conclusion of the critically beloved Battlestar Galactica reboot and its movie spin-offs The Plan and Razor. BSG vets David Eick and Michael Taylor are executive producers, with Taylor writing the script from a story by Eick, Bradley Thompson and David Weddle. Jonas Pate (Caprica) directed.
The prequel follows young William Adama (Luke Pasqualino, UK’s Skins) during the first Cylon War.

A couple of weeks ago, it was rumored that the Batman villain Firefly/Garfield Lynns was set to appear in a future episode of The CW's Arrow, which was recently picked up by the network for a full season. Now, Entertainment Weekly confirm that the villain will make his debut on the show on its tenth episode, titled "Burned". The episode is scheduled to air in early 2013. Actor Andrew Dunbar (Tower Prep, Battlestar Galactica: Razor) will play Firefly. In the comics, Garfield Lynns becomes a villain after suffering severe burns as a firefighter. As with every character on Arrow, expect this take on Firefly to be more grounded/realistic than the comic book version. You can check out Arrow on The CW Wednesdays at 8 Pm Est. One great thing about Dragon*Con is that sometimes it inspires me to check out new shows or genre fiction, and sometimes it inspires me to re-visit a past favorite. After this year’s Battlestar Galactica panel I had a super-cravi ng to go back and watch the show again; thanks to Netflix I’ve been re-living the intensity that is BSG.
What I love about the show, as someone pointed out in the panel (BSG – Bright Shiny Futures Are Overrated) is that it uses the harsh situation that the few remaining members of the human race find themselves in to explore numerous complex themes that resonate with real world conflicts and historical events. Along with plenty of action and drama, it’s an intellectual show that challenges viewers to think about the choices being made, and highlights the complexity and imperfections of the main characters as they constantly make...

The short-lived spin-off series Caprica may not quite have won the hearts of Battlestar Galactica's fan army, but SyFy have high hopes for Blood And Chrome, a showreel for which debuted at WonderCon over the weekend, and has now found its way online (spotted by AICN).Cut to the Trent Reznor/Karen O/Dragon Tattoo version of Immigrant Song, it's a breakneck glimpse of the battle-heavy pilot, but goes a long way towards showcasing the new system of virtual sets, which replaces the rebooted Battlestar Galactica's reliance on relatively limiting practical builds.Blood And Chrome was originally mooted in 2010 as a series of webisodes a la The Resistance, The Face of the Enemy and the Razor Flashbacks, before SyFy opted to give it the full works. It's set between Caprica and BSG, in the tenth year of the first war with the Cylons, and focuses on a young...

James Marsters (Buffy, Caprica), Stephanie Jacobsen (Melrose Place, Battlestar Galactica: Razor) and Naoko Mori (Torchwood) fans, hang in there! Syfy is still keeping Three Inches in mind for a series pickup. The series had initially lost out to Alphas for a place in the fall line-up, but network president Mark Stern states that they have not thrown Three Inches out of the window:
“We’re looking at another way to get Three Inches going. We love it, so we’re trying to figure out a way to do both [that and Alphas] right now.”
As SciFi Mafia reported to you last December, one of the options the network was looking at for Three Inches was to reformat it from a one-hour format into a half-hour structure. Hopefully, they can make this work!
Three Inches’ sci-fi star-studded cast includes James Marsters (Dragonball 2, Caprica, Smallville), Andrea Martin (My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Not for Nothing), Stephanie Jacobsen (Melrose Place,...

The two-hour pilot for Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome (2011) has begun filming. As a fan of Battlestar: Galactica (both the original and the reboot), Battlestar: Galactica: Razor, and aspects of Caprica, I am looking forward to what the scifi show’s creators come up with. I am also looking forward to the early experiments on human beings by Cyclons and the space battles that occur with “a young William Adama during the 10th year of the first Cylon war.” We already reported how Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome cast Luke Pasqualino, Ben Cotton in the key roles in the upcoming series.
Here is the official press release.

The BSG universe gets a little bigger today as the first casting news for Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome has come to light. Luke Pasqualino of the UK’s Skins will play the young William Adama, while Ben Cotton will play his commanding officer, Coker.
Pasqualino is best known as Freddie Mclair on the original Skins (not the controversial MTV conversion). The 21-year-old hasn’t had time to do much else, though he has become something of a teen celebrity in the UK for his high-profile role. Cotton, like his Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome character, is a TV veteran whose resume includes CW’s cheerleader dramedy Hellcats and smaller parts on shows like Smallville, Psych and Supernatural. He’s had a few parts on previous SyFy projects including Stargate: Atlantis, Battlestar Galactica: Razor and the ...

The Battlestar Galactica prequel, Caprica, met its end far too soon despite being a very well-made show. For one reason or another, fans of BSG simply decided not to follow the show as religiously, leading to its untimely fate.
As we were waiting to hear the fate of Caprica from the executives at Syfy, they announced the plans for another spinoff series called Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome. The show was to be another prequel, set in between the storylines of BSG and Caprica when William Adama was still a young pilot. We saw a glimpse of this younger Adama in the direct-to-dvd movie (which they should make more of immediately -- we miss the real cast), Razor, and fans wondered if the actor that played the youthful future Admiral, Nico Cortez, would be returning for Blood and Chrome. Now we have that answer.

Trying to find a nationality for William Adama is hard. Yes, we know he's Caprican with some Tauron ancestry, but the once Latino actor is now being played by a ... Sicilian? Luke Pasqualino has been tapped by Syfy as the star of its new backdoor pilot, "Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome." He will play a young William Adama, a young fighter pilot who will later lead a ragtag fleet to Earth. The move was a surprise to some, but not to all. Rumors had circulated the past couple weeks that Nico Cortez, the actor who played Adama in a similar time period in "Battlestar Galactica: Razor," had been passed over for the role. As early as Monday, Airlock Alpha's Twitter feed suggested that Cortez was not going to get the role. There had been some speculation Syfy would go with a more ...

Chicago – The high-def releases for “Battlestar Galactica” have been somewhat baffling. The problem for Universal was that A.) They had started releasing the series on standard-def when Blu-ray took off and B.) They needed a way to milk one of their most impressive cash cows for a bit longer. Consequently, the chance to individually buy all of one of the best science fiction programs of all time didn’t come until 2011. But that day has finally arrived with the release of the impressive “Battlestar Galactica: Season Four.”
Blu-Ray Rating: 5.0/5.0
Stick with me here. It’s going to get complicated. Technically, the entire run of “Battlestar Galactica” was available in July of 2009 but only in an expensive complete series set (currently running over $200). If you had a few seasons on standard that you were fine merely upconverting, you still had to open the wallet for the full series.

Christmas has come and gone, and the week after offers a few Blu-rays worth whipping your gift cards out for. This week you have the chance to bring home the latest in the chronicles of the Umbrella Corporation’s shenanigans, an Amber Heard thriller, Joel Schumacher’s latest, one of the most quiet and contemplative “thrillers” released this year, and an extended sci-fi series episode.

Not a whole lot to choose from this Tuesday after Christmas as most studios like to get their product on the shelves for gift-giving rather than counting on people spending their gift certificates the days after, but there may be something of interest for a couple of you.
The American I know a lot of people did not like this movie but I found it to be quite good. I wonder if anyone that didn't like this movie could possibly like Somewhere, both are rather quiet and meditative features. It's interesting Focus handled both of them this year. Resident Evil: Afterlife I will need to Netflix this one, but I won't be adding it to the home collection, at least not until I've seen it. I still don't own the third one and have no intention of buying it...
