It’s hard to believe now but before taking 12 long years to follow 1987’s Full Metal Jacket with Eyes Wide Shut in 1999, the famously meticulous Stanley Kubrick was comparatively prolific — in the ’60s alone he released four of his 13 features. In these days of instant gratification, a director taking longer than three years is either deemed to be M.I.A. or about to pop up with a secret film made entirely under the radar. But absence does make the heart grow fonder, and these five directors can expect a warm welcome in 2025.

Warner Bros.’ “Mickey 17” doesn’t look like it will blast off at the box office, earning an opening weekend of $19.1 million from 3,807 locations as it faces a long road to recouping its nine-digit production budget.
Greenlit in January 2022 under previous Warner film chairman Toby Emmerich, “Mickey 17” is acclaimed director Bong Joon-ho’s follow-up to his Best Picture Oscar winner “Parasite” and carries a reported production budget of $118 million.
Reception for the film has been generally positive with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 79% critics and 73% audience to go with a B on CinemaScore. But it remains to be seen whether that good-but-not-great word of mouth will be enough to give “Mickey 17” the legs to be theatrically profitable, especially with Paramount’s “Novocaine” being released next week with a relatively more accessible form of the gory action thrills that “Mickey 17” offers along with Bong’s brand of biting satire.

This time a year ago, the box office was getting a drought-busting weekend thanks to the $82.5 million opening of Warner Bros./Legendary’s “Dune: Part Two.” But Warner’s new release this weekend, “Mickey 17,” isn’t opening to a quarter of that.
Industry estimates have Bong Joon-ho’s sci-fi satire opening to just $18.5 million from 3,607 locations after a $7.7 million opening day, a foreboding result given the film’s reported $118 million budget.
With no other films earning more than $10 million this weekend — “Captain America: Brave New World” is second with $8.7 million in its fourth frame — overall totals are coming in at a mere $56 million, down 60% from the opening weekend of “Dune: Part Two” a year ago.
While reception for “Mickey 17” is skewing positive, it isn’t the overwhelming acclaim that an R-rated sci-fi film would need to earn considerable legs. Rotten Tomatoes scores stand at 79% critics and 76% audience, while...

Bong Joon Ho’s “Mickey 17,” the first of Warner Bros.’ eclectic, pricey 2025 slate of original films from name-brand directors like Ryan Coogler and Paul Thomas Anderson, isn’t getting the warmest arrival at the box office. The sci-fi comedy, starring Robert Pattinson as a pair of interstellar doppelgangers, earned $7.7 million across Friday and preview screenings from 3,807 locations.
That kick-off puts “Mickey 17” on pace to land within projections for an opening weekend north of $18 million. Whether or not it can fulfill that forecast though, it’s going to be a slow start for a film sporting a $118 million production budget. Add in marketing and distribution costs and the Warner Bros. release will likely struggle to enter profitability in theaters, which could take more than $275 million in global admissions.

Turns out, when you’ve won Best Picture, most of the time, the only place you can go after that high is down.
Opening this weekend at the box office is “Mickey 17,” the first film from director Bong Joon Ho since his film won Best Picture for “Parasite” back in 2019. “Parasite” was something of a unicorn, an international film that crossed all borders and became a $259 million global commercial hit and an awards circuit sensation. Even with Robert Pattinson helping his cause, that’s going to be a tough benchmark to surpass. Warner Bros. is projecting a $40-50 million global opening weekend.
The difference this time is director Bong is working with a major studio, Warner Bros., rather than indie distributor Neon, and “Mickey 17” will open wide on 3,400 screens domestically, whereas “Parasite” at its peak only hit 2,000.
But when a director’s movie wins Best Picture, does their next one perform better?...

David Cronenberg has said that his new film The Shrouds – which has been making the festival rounds lately (you can read what JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray thought of it Here) – was originally intended to be a Netflix TV series, but the streamer dropped it after paying him to write the pilot episode. So a feature film it is, and Sideshow and Janus Films have acquired all U.S. distribution rights to the film, with their plan being to give it a theatrical release sometime in 2025. We don’t know a specific release date for this one yet, but the Motion Picture Association ratings board has revealed that The Shrouds has secured an R rating – primarily for sexual content and nudity! Here’s the reason given: Rated R for strong sexual content, graphic nudity, language and some violent content.
Pyramide Distribution will be giving the film a theatrical release in France on April 30th.

One year after Oppenheimer became one of the highest-grossing Best Picture of all time, the Academy bestowed its top prize on Anora, one of the lowest-grossing winners in the modern era.
With $15.6 million in domestic ticket sales and just over $40 million worldwide, Anora is the lowest-grossing Best Picture winner since The Hurt Lucker, except the pandemic-impacted Nomadland ($39 million) and the streaming film Coda.
The only Best Picture winners to gross less than $50 million worldwide since 1990 are The Hurt Locker, Nomadland, Coda, and Anora.
However, despite the low gross, Anora was an unqualified success for filmmaker Sean Baker and distributor Neon even before it won five Oscars on Sunday night, including a record four individual awards for Baker (he’s the first person to ever win four Oscars for the same film in one night).
Anora was reportedly produced for roughly $6 million and funded independently, as Baker has said several times...

Conventional wisdom suggests that studios should not open their newest movies or tentpoles on Oscars weekend. Wouldn’t you rather wait until the weekend after the industry has finished celebrating the year’s best movies before promoting a new one?
But historically, that hasn’t necessarily been the case, especially when compared to something like Super Bowl weekend. So, with studios largely avoiding major new releases, this weekend had the unfortunate effect of being the lowest weekend at the overall domestic box office during the Oscars in at least 15 years.
Seems like the real winners were onstage on Sunday. The widest release from a major distributor this week was “Last Breath,” the deep-sea diver thriller starring Woody Harrelson and Simu Liu. It opened on over 3,000 theaters and pulled in $7.8 million, finishing No. 2 in the domestic top 10 behind “Captain America: Brave New World” in its third week of release. It made...

Keep track of precursor wins here with our scorecard. This includes honors from major film festivals, critics groups, guilds, and televised shows of the 2024-25 Oscar season. Wins are listed in order of announcement and in accordance with candidates' FYC campaigns.
Updated: Sunday, March 2, 2025, with Oscar winners.
The Oscar season began and ended with Anora. Sean Baker's film moved to the front of the Oscar race after winning the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in May, and while it didn't have the smoothest path, its Oscar journey ended with five trophies Sunday night, including Best Picture.
Anora also won Best Actress for Mikey Madison, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing — the last three of which went to Baker.

In the 21st century, 25 films have so far won Best Picture. A lot has changed over the past 25 years around the world and within the Academy. That evolution is partly reflected in this century’s list of Best Picture winners, which contains films that are both beloved and oft-derided. In the case of some, their Best Picture wins have even directly strengthened or worsened their reputations.

Post-traumatic stress disorder has certainly not been a topic that has been under-discussed within American war cinema. Nevertheless, it is rarely the focus of an entire film. Recently acclaimed films about modern warfare, such as “The Hurt Locker” and “American Sniper,” shifted focus on the debilitating consequences of Ptsd within their third acts in order to indicate that the battle waged on the battlefield was only part of the fight that every soldier experienced. However, a majority of soldiers’ lives are spent not in active service, as Ptsd is a reality that many have to simply live with. Even if this doesn’t result in haunting nightmares regularly, the most minor of incidents can end up resurfacing memories of their service, and all the hardship that it entails.

Guy Pearce, the guest of this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, is one of the most gifted screen actors of his generation.
An England-born Aussie, he has given standout performances in films such as 1994’s The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, 1997’s L.A. Spoiler alert: The crazy, unpredictable Oscar season? Still crazy. Still unpredictable.
Fresh off a one-two punch weekend where “Anora” cleaned up at the PGA and DGA Awards, the BAFTAs decided to stir the pot with their own take on the race. If history tells us anything, it’s that BAFTA can be either a crystal ball or a red herring.
In 2024, every BAFTA winner (except for visual effects) went on to win the Oscar, making it the most predictive year in recent memory. The year before, however, BAFTA charted its own path — only “Everything Everywhere All at Once” editor Paul Rogers repeated at the Oscars. So, with the final Oscar voting closing on Tuesday, Feb. 18, let’s break down the key takeaways from BAFTA’s curveballs and what they could mean for Hollywood’s biggest night.

Anthony Mackie once had a very different career in mind before stepping into the Marvel spotlight. Long before Captain America 4 positioned him as one of the smartest Avengers alive, he had his sights set on something completely unrelated to superhero stardom.

Anthony Mackie welcomed in rave reviews after Captain America: Brave New World premiere in Los Angeles. The movie premiered with great fan fervor earlier today with many A-listers in attendance from Hollywood.

Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford also seemed to be in a spectacular mood on the red carpet. To add to the charm, the movie itself has been receiving some good early reviews, with many claiming the old Marvel is back in action.
Mackie, though, seems to have charmed the audience especially well in his debut as Captain America. Although he had been a part of Marvel for a long time, many claim this movie proved his worth as a superhero film star.

In a recent interview, Anthony Mackie shared his thoughts on his longtime friend, Jeremy Renner, and his remarkable recovery after the terrifying snowplow accident that nearly cost Renner his life. The two actors, who have known each other since starring in The Hurt Locker in 2008, both joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe later on.
Renner, 54, was seriously injured on January 1, 2023, when he was crushed by a seven-ton snowplow while trying to clear snow near his mountain home in Reno. The accident left him with over 30 broken bones, a collapsed lung, and a lacerated liver.
He had jumped out of the snowplow but ended up getting caught underneath it. Despite the severe injuries, Renner never viewed himself as a victim.
Mackie, who was among the first to visit Renner in the hospital, reflected on the experience, saying, ‘I was really surprised and hurt when I got the news. The first thing I thought was,...

From Schindler’s List to The English Patient to the Harry Potter films to Conclave, Ralph Fiennes has had a celebrated career as a leading star and character actor.
The British performer, who graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, is adept at playing compromised men on the big screen, such as his Austrian Nazi Amon Göth, who oversees the building of a concentration camp in Poland in Schindler’s List. In 2011, Fiennes made his big-screen directorial debut and also starred in William Shakespeare’s tragedy Coriolanus. He starred, produced and directed 2013’s The Invisible Woman, where he portrayed Charles Dickens. Most notably, Fiennes has been in several Best Picture Oscar winners including 1993’s Schindler’s List, The English Patient, and 2009’s The Hurt Locker. The gold-plated meltdown that has followed the revelation of Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón’s past anti-Muslim and racist tweets — with anti-George Floyd and pro-Hitler sentiments thrown in — has now required numerous apologies/explanations from the Best Actress Oscar nominee. Gascón’s previous online remarks have seriously cratered the odds for her and her film, which is nominated for 13 Oscars. The journalist and podcaster who uncovered Gascón’s troubling social media posts insists it was good old-fashioned reporting and she was not a “studio plant” fueling a smear campaign underwritten by a rival nominee.
In any case Gascón’s self-inflicted mess is the latest example of an internet-powered scandal that has threatened to derail an Oscar campaign. Here’s a look at the four most notable examples this century and how they played out.

So a feature film it is, and Sideshow and Janus Films have acquired all U.S. distribution rights to the film, with their plan being to give it a theatrical release sometime in the spring of 2025. We don’t know a specific release date for this one yet, but a new teaser trailer has arrived online and you can check it out in the embed above. We saw the previous teaser trailer eight months ago.
Pyramide Distribution will be giving the film a theatrical release in France on April 30th.

Plenty of cinephiles think fondly of Guy Pearce’s turn as the amnesiac Leonard Shelby in “Memento,” but Pearce isn’t one of them.
The 57-year-old actor, who most recently picked up an Academy Award nomination for his supporting turn in Brady Corbet’s historical epic “The Brutalist,” spoke candidly about his performance in Christopher Nolan’s 2000 thriller “Memento” in an interview with The Times.
“I’m having an existential crisis,” Pearce admitted. “I watched ‘Memento’ the other day and I’m still depressed. I’m shit in that movie. I’d never thought that before, but I did this Q&a of ‘Memento’ earlier this month and decided to actually watch the film again.”
“But while it was playing I realized I hate what I did,” he added. “And so all this stuff about an exec at Warners being why I’ve not worked with Chris again? It came crashing down.

Anthony Mackie has delivered plenty of award-worthy performances; whether it's 8 Mile, The Manchurian Candidate, Million Dollar Baby, The Hurt Locker, or even Netflix's Altered Carbon, he's impressed on screen time and time again.
However, he's frequently been overlooked and that's something the actor is well aware of.
Asked by Esquire about the way his career has played out in terms of award success (or lack of), Mackie said, "This ain’t no overnight shit. It’s always apropos for me when awards season comes up. Because I know I’ve done at least four performances that could have been nominated - if not for a Golden Globe, then an Oscar or an Emmy."
A consolation for Mackie is the fact he's now the face of a new blockbuster franchise, starting with Captain America: Brave New World next month. "Captain America is my Oscar," he tells the site. "Because...

Anthony Mackie recently took over the mantle of Captain America and inherited the shield from Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers for Brave New World. Even then, while Mackie is set to start a critical new chapter in the MCU, the actor still seems sore from his Oscar snubs. Although he feels validated for the top billing in a major studio blockbuster, Mackie can’t help but lament about the industry’s negligence towards him.

Anthony Mackie told Esquire magazine in a new cover story that playing Captain America “is my Oscar because I’ve been overlooked so many times in my career.” The actor says there are least four performances of his that deserved award nominations, and yet he was snubbed every time. So he’s making “Captain America: Brave New World” his Oscars moment, as he’s finally leading a Marvel tentpole after 11 years in the franchise.
“The expectations of what comes along with this role is something that nobody talks about,” Mackie told the magazine about becoming Captain America. “Nobody really acknowledges the mental jousting that takes place. When I walk out of this hotel, I don’t walk out of this hotel as Anthony Mackie. I walk out of this hotel as Captain America.”
Mackie said “Brave New World” is “literally the best movie it can be,” adding: “It stays in the lines of Marvel.

The whiplash of the Oscar nominations rippled across Hollywood professionals, awards pundits, and elated enthusiasts of 2024’s best films and performances.
The most jaw-dropping — and welcomed — moment of nomination morning came from Walter Salles’ Brazilian drama, “I’m Still Here,” which landed three major nominations: international feature, best actress for Fernanda Torres, and best picture. This marks the second consecutive year in which more than one non-English language movie received a best picture nomination, following 2023’s “Anatomy of a Fall” and “The Zone of Interest” (although it’s the first time two international feature nominees have been recognized). It shows that the Golden Globes (at least their winners) still matter.
After Torres won the Globe for best actress, triumphing over A-listers Angelina Jolie (“Maria”) and Nicole Kidman (“Babygirl”), many Academy voters told Variety they were seeking out the film, with feedback being overwhelmingly positive. The 2025 Oscar nominations were announced on Thursday and while some vets like Ralph Fiennes (Conclave) and Edward Norton (A Complete Unknown) have been around the block before, many others heard their names called for the very first time.
Among those Oscar newbies is Best Actress contender Demi Moore (The Substance), whose career spans more than 40 years but who, as she noted in her Golden Globe acceptance speech, was dismissed as a “popcorn actress” by a producer. It’s surprising that Guy Pearce (The Brutalist) never earned an Oscar nom before now; his past roles include Oscar-winning films like L.A. Confidential (1997), The Hurt Locker (2009), and The King’s Speech (2010), but he finally got on the board in this year’s Best Supporting Actor race. Hollywood royalty Isabella Rossellini (Conclave), the daughter of Oscar nominee Roberto Rossellini and Oscar winner Ingrid Bergman, finally scored a nom of her own in Best Supporting Actress.

Who’s afraid of a little female body horror? For once, not the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, which on Thursday morning, finally opened one of the last remaining gilded doors of their annual Oscar nominations, pouring love all over filmmaker Coralie Fargeat and her “The Substance.”
The filmmaker, with just her second film, earned the sole spot for a female filmmaker in the Best Director race, in addition to helming the lone female-directed film in the Best Picture race. Meanwhile, other female filmmakers and their work were shut out not just from the picture and director race, but the entire Oscar nom kit and kaboodle, including Payal Kapadia and her “All We Imagine as Light” and Halina Reijn and her “Babygirl.”
Earlier this month, Fargeat told IndieWire at the Golden Globes that she believes horror films are fully deserving of a level playing field at the Oscars.

All five Academy Award nominees for Best Director on Thursday — Brady Corbet for The Brutalist, Sean Baker for Anora, Jacques Audiard for Emilia Pérez, James Mangold for A Complete Unknown, and Coralie Fargeat for The Substance — are first-timers in the category.

John Krasinski's best movies and TV shows go far beyond his star-making role as Jim on The Office, showcasing his incredible career over the years. The American actor started his professional acting career with bit parts in movies and shows, but landing the role as prankster paper salesman Jim Halpert on The Office helped to make him a Hollywood name. From there, Krasinski went on to prove he was more than just a sitcom star with a number of notable projects on the big screen and small screen.
Krasinski has stepped behind the camera several times as a director, most notably with the A Quiet Place movies, but he still seems focused on his acting. He has worked with acclaimed directors like Kathryn Bigelow and Sam Mendes while also sharing the screen with actors like Matt Damon and Emily Blunt. He has excelled as the comedic lead as well as the action hero,...

The 1995 James Cameron-written cyberpunk thriller Strange Days proved to be a box office flop in its time and has failed to gain a cult following even now—in fact, barely anyone remembers this great 1990s action movie in spite of its big names. However, with its thematic relevance to present-day events, Strange Days deserves another look from modern audiences. Starring Ralph Fiennes as black market virtual reality (VR) dealer Lenny Nero, the film explores the societal impact of technological advances and mass violence.
Many great sci-fi movies got the future wrong, but oddly enough, Strange Days managed to predict quite a few things about the turn of the century as well as the American zeitgeist 30 years later. Civil unrest, police brutality, political corruption, and societal desensitization to mass violence are just a few themes from Strange Days, and while...

Jeremy Renner & Amy Adams Laugh Riot ( Photo Credit – YouTube )
Denis Villeneuve’s critically acclaimed sci-fi drama Arrival, released in 2016, treated viewers with an emotionally resonant yet challenging story of humanity’s first encounter with extraterrestrial life. Starring Amy Adams as linguist Louise Banks and Jeremy Renner as physicist Ian Donnelly, Arrival became a landmark achievement in the genre and marked a turning point in the Dune director’s career.
Ironically, the central conflict observed in Arrival — linguistic barriers to communicating with a diverse species — wasn’t limited to the movie’s script but found its way to the production, albeit not so much as emotionally but humorously. During the promotional tour of Arrival, Adams and Renner appeared on The Graham Norton Show, where they delighted the audience with hilarious behind-the-scenes anecdotes about working with Villeneuve.

The 2025 Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations sent a shockwave through the Oscars race, boosting top contenders like Anora, A Complete Unknown, Emilia Pérez, and Wicked while dealing potentially trajectory-altering blows to Sing Sing, Angelina Jolie, and Denzel Washington.
Here’s what the SAG Awards nominations mean for the Oscars.
Anora is back – but maybe it never left
After the Golden Globes blanked Anora on Sunday, it felt like Sean Baker’s madcap comedy might not pay off its status as an early Best Picture frontrunner. But the actors’ guild gave the Neon film a jolt, scoring nominations for ensemble, Film Actress for Mikey Madison, and Film Supporting Actor for Yura Borisov. Madison was long considered a lock in the Gold Derby odds, and Anora hung on to the fifth position before the nomination announcement. But the Borisov nomination was a surprise (he had been in seventh place in the odds). The Russian star,...
