David Cronenberg has said that his new film The Shrouds – which has been making the festival rounds lately (you can read what JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray thought of it Here) – was originally intended to be a Netflix TV series, but the streamer dropped it after paying him to write the pilot episode. So a feature film it is, and Sideshow and Janus Films have acquired all U.S. distribution rights to the film, with their plan being to give it a theatrical release sometime in the spring of 2025. We don’t know a specific release date for this one yet, but a new teaser trailer has arrived online and you can check it out in the embed above. We saw the previous teaser trailer eight months ago.
Pyramide Distribution will be giving the film a theatrical release in France on April 30th.

Plenty of cinephiles think fondly of Guy Pearce’s turn as the amnesiac Leonard Shelby in “Memento,” but Pearce isn’t one of them.
The 57-year-old actor, who most recently picked up an Academy Award nomination for his supporting turn in Brady Corbet’s historical epic “The Brutalist,” spoke candidly about his performance in Christopher Nolan’s 2000 thriller “Memento” in an interview with The Times.
“I’m having an existential crisis,” Pearce admitted. “I watched ‘Memento’ the other day and I’m still depressed. I’m shit in that movie. I’d never thought that before, but I did this Q&a of ‘Memento’ earlier this month and decided to actually watch the film again.”
“But while it was playing I realized I hate what I did,” he added. “And so all this stuff about an exec at Warners being why I’ve not worked with Chris again? It came crashing down.

Anthony Mackie has delivered plenty of award-worthy performances; whether it's 8 Mile, The Manchurian Candidate, Million Dollar Baby, The Hurt Locker, or even Netflix's Altered Carbon, he's impressed on screen time and time again.
However, he's frequently been overlooked and that's something the actor is well aware of.
Asked by Esquire about the way his career has played out in terms of award success (or lack of), Mackie said, "This ain’t no overnight shit. It’s always apropos for me when awards season comes up. Because I know I’ve done at least four performances that could have been nominated - if not for a Golden Globe, then an Oscar or an Emmy."
A consolation for Mackie is the fact he's now the face of a new blockbuster franchise, starting with Captain America: Brave New World next month. "Captain America is my Oscar," he tells the site. "Because...

Anthony Mackie recently took over the mantle of Captain America and inherited the shield from Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers for Brave New World. Even then, while Mackie is set to start a critical new chapter in the MCU, the actor still seems sore from his Oscar snubs. Although he feels validated for the top billing in a major studio blockbuster, Mackie can’t help but lament about the industry’s negligence towards him.

Anthony Mackie told Esquire magazine in a new cover story that playing Captain America “is my Oscar because I’ve been overlooked so many times in my career.” The actor says there are least four performances of his that deserved award nominations, and yet he was snubbed every time. So he’s making “Captain America: Brave New World” his Oscars moment, as he’s finally leading a Marvel tentpole after 11 years in the franchise.
“The expectations of what comes along with this role is something that nobody talks about,” Mackie told the magazine about becoming Captain America. “Nobody really acknowledges the mental jousting that takes place. When I walk out of this hotel, I don’t walk out of this hotel as Anthony Mackie. I walk out of this hotel as Captain America.”
Mackie said “Brave New World” is “literally the best movie it can be,” adding: “It stays in the lines of Marvel.

Anthony Mackie is embracing his superhero status in a way that goes beyond box office numbers. In a recent interview, Mackie made it clear that while the Academy Awards have continually overlooked his performances, he’s already won in his own way. His trophy? The shield.

Despite his undeniable talent and contributions to blockbuster hits, Mackie has never received an Oscar nomination. And he’s got some thoughts about that.

The whiplash of the Oscar nominations rippled across Hollywood professionals, awards pundits, and elated enthusiasts of 2024’s best films and performances.
The most jaw-dropping — and welcomed — moment of nomination morning came from Walter Salles’ Brazilian drama, “I’m Still Here,” which landed three major nominations: international feature, best actress for Fernanda Torres, and best picture. This marks the second consecutive year in which more than one non-English language movie received a best picture nomination, following 2023’s “Anatomy of a Fall” and “The Zone of Interest” (although it’s the first time two international feature nominees have been recognized). It shows that the Golden Globes (at least their winners) still matter.
After Torres won the Globe for best actress, triumphing over A-listers Angelina Jolie (“Maria”) and Nicole Kidman (“Babygirl”), many Academy voters told Variety they were seeking out the film, with feedback being overwhelmingly positive. The 2025 Oscar nominations were announced on Thursday and while some vets like Ralph Fiennes (Conclave) and Edward Norton (A Complete Unknown) have been around the block before, many others heard their names called for the very first time.
Among those Oscar newbies is Best Actress contender Demi Moore (The Substance), whose career spans more than 40 years but who, as she noted in her Golden Globe acceptance speech, was dismissed as a “popcorn actress” by a producer. It’s surprising that Guy Pearce (The Brutalist) never earned an Oscar nom before now; his past roles include Oscar-winning films like L.A. Confidential (1997), The Hurt Locker (2009), and The King’s Speech (2010), but he finally got on the board in this year’s Best Supporting Actor race. Hollywood royalty Isabella Rossellini (Conclave), the daughter of Oscar nominee Roberto Rossellini and Oscar winner Ingrid Bergman, finally scored a nom of her own in Best Supporting Actress.

Who’s afraid of a little female body horror? For once, not the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, which on Thursday morning, finally opened one of the last remaining gilded doors of their annual Oscar nominations, pouring love all over filmmaker Coralie Fargeat and her “The Substance.”
The filmmaker, with just her second film, earned the sole spot for a female filmmaker in the Best Director race, in addition to helming the lone female-directed film in the Best Picture race. Meanwhile, other female filmmakers and their work were shut out not just from the picture and director race, but the entire Oscar nom kit and kaboodle, including Payal Kapadia and her “All We Imagine as Light” and Halina Reijn and her “Babygirl.”
Earlier this month, Fargeat told IndieWire at the Golden Globes that she believes horror films are fully deserving of a level playing field at the Oscars.

All five Academy Award nominees for Best Director on Thursday — Brady Corbet for The Brutalist, Sean Baker for Anora, Jacques Audiard for Emilia Pérez, James Mangold for A Complete Unknown, and Coralie Fargeat for The Substance — are first-timers in the category.
The last time the Best Directors list was all first-timers was 1998, when James Cameron (Titanic), Peter Cattaneo (The Full Monty), Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting), Curtis Hanson (L.A. Confidential), Atom Egoyan (The Sweet Hereafter), Terrence Malick (The Thin Red Line), and Peter Weir (The Truman Show) were honored. That was the year that Cameron went on to personally win three Oscars, for Best Picture and Best Editing in addition to directing as part of Titanic’s massive 11-victory haul.
Too, Fargeat joined an exclusive club on Thursday, becoming just the ninth woman to be nominated in the Best Director category. The other eight were Lina Wertmüller (Seven Beauties,...

Coralie Fargeat joined an exclusive Oscar list on Thursday morning thanks to her Best Director nomination for The Substance.
She is now the ninth woman to receive a directing bid at the Academy Awards, with the eight other female filmmakers being Lina Wertmuller for Seven Beauties (1976), Jane Campion for The Piano (1993) and The Power of the Dog (2021), Sofia Coppola for Lost in Translation (2003), Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker (2009), Greta Gerwig for Lady Bird (2017), Chloé Zhao for Nomadland (2020), Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman (2020), and Justine Triet for Anatomy of a Fall (2023). To date, the only three to win are Bigelow, Zhao, and Campion (The Power of the Dog).
Joining Fargeat in this year’s Best Director lineup are Jacques Audiard (Emilia Pérez), Sean Baker (Anora), Brady Corbet (The Brutalist), and James Mangold (A Complete Unknown). All five of them are first-time director nominees. See the complete list of 2025 Oscar nominations.

John Krasinski's best movies and TV shows go far beyond his star-making role as Jim on The Office, showcasing his incredible career over the years. The American actor started his professional acting career with bit parts in movies and shows, but landing the role as prankster paper salesman Jim Halpert on The Office helped to make him a Hollywood name. From there, Krasinski went on to prove he was more than just a sitcom star with a number of notable projects on the big screen and small screen.
Krasinski has stepped behind the camera several times as a director, most notably with the A Quiet Place movies, but he still seems focused on his acting. Jeremy Renner & Amy Adams Laugh Riot ( Photo Credit – YouTube )
Denis Villeneuve’s critically acclaimed sci-fi drama Arrival, released in 2016, treated viewers with an emotionally resonant yet challenging story of humanity’s first encounter with extraterrestrial life. Starring Amy Adams as linguist Louise Banks and Jeremy Renner as physicist Ian Donnelly, Arrival became a landmark achievement in the genre and marked a turning point in the Dune director’s career.
Ironically, the central conflict observed in Arrival — linguistic barriers to communicating with a diverse species — wasn’t limited to the movie’s script but found its way to the production, albeit not so much as emotionally but humorously.
During the promotional tour of Arrival, Adams and Renner appeared on The Graham Norton Show, where they delighted the audience with hilarious behind-the-scenes anecdotes about working with Villeneuve.

The 2025 Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations sent a shockwave through the Oscars race, boosting top contenders like Anora, A Complete Unknown, Emilia Pérez, and Wicked while dealing potentially trajectory-altering blows to Sing Sing, Angelina Jolie, and Denzel Washington.
Here’s what the SAG Awards nominations mean for the Oscars.
Anora is back – but maybe it never left
After the Golden Globes blanked Anora on Sunday, it felt like Sean Baker’s madcap comedy might not pay off its status as an early Best Picture frontrunner. But the actors’ guild gave the Neon film a jolt, scoring nominations for ensemble, Film Actress for Mikey Madison, and Film Supporting Actor for Yura Borisov. Madison was long considered a lock in the Gold Derby odds, and Anora hung on to the fifth position before the nomination announcement. But the Borisov nomination was a surprise (he had been in seventh place in the odds). The Russian star,...

Anora had a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day at Sunday’s Golden Globes. The Best Picture Oscar frontrunner and critics awards leader went home empty-handed, going 0-for-5 despite being the odds-on favorite in three categories, Best Comedy/Musical Film, Best Comedy/Musical Actress for Mikey Madison, and Best Screenplay for writer-director Sean Baker. What’s more, it saw its top Oscar rivals bag at least one statuette each. The Brutalist won Best Drama Film, Best Director for Brady Corbet, and Best Drama Actor for Adrien Brody. Emilia Pérez converted four of its 10 nominations into hardware for Best Comedy/Musical Film, Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña, Best Non-English Language Film, and Best Original Song for “El Mal.” Conclave took home Best Screenplay. And regardless of what you think about the Globes’ Cinematic and Box Office Achievement Award, it allowed the Wicked gang to get onstage, hold a trophy,...

Chris Pratt may have started out as a comedic actor, but he's since branched out to an array of other genres. After starring in Parks & Recreation, Pratt became a household name with his starring role as Star Lord in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, most recently playing the character in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in 2023. He's also had a number of significant roles outside the MCU, both in other major franchises and beyond.
Pratt played Owen Grady in three Jurassic World movies, departing that franchise with Jurassic World Dominion in 2022. He also recently starred in sci-fi action flick The Tomorrow War (2021), which has a sequel in development. Pratt has also taken on far more serious military roles, including in Prime Video's The Terminal List series, but his first major venture into this arena actually came in 2012 with the release of a political thriller based on real events.

Kathryn Bigelow is a record-breaking director who has been behind some stirring dramatic films. She was the first ever woman to win an Oscar for Best Director, taking home the award for The Hurt Locker. While her career started long before this, the Jeremy Renner-led film saw Bigelow's career make a foray into a gripping drama that puts its audience into a real-life situation. The film is not directly based on true events, but it is inspired by the real experiences of journalist Mark Boal, who was a screenwriter on the film.
The Hurt Locker tackled the Iraq War while the United States was still very much in the heart of it, making it one of the first major films to take on this topic head-on. Now, war films are on the rise again, including next year's A24 real-time drama Warfare. This year has also seen a number of...

Stephen King is one of the best storytellers of the 20th and 21st centuries, which makes it intriguing to see which movies resonate with him. Many of Stephen King's best books, including The Shining and It, have been adapted as movies, and some have even been adapted more than once. He is known for his horror stories, but he is also the author of the novella that was adapted into the hopeful and inspiring movie The Shawshank Redemption, along with writing the novella that is the source material for the upcoming and heartfelt Stephen King movie The Life of Chuck.
King's taste in movies is as varied as the wide range of stories that he has written over the years. As seen in the best Stephen King book endings, the prolific author knows how to tell and complete a good story, an art form that he recognizes and appreciates in the movies he watches.

It may finally be time for Guy Pearce to get that Oscar nomination. The versatile actor has a legitimately legendary resume at this point. Roles in modern classics such as “The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert,” “L.A. Confidential,” “Memento,” “The Hurt Locker,” “The King’s Speech,” “Animal Kingdom,” “Prometheus,” and acclaimed mini-series “Mildred Pierce” and “Mare of Easttown.” Oh, and all while making sure to star in independent productions in his native Australia as much as possible.

What If...? has told multiverse tales across the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the upcoming final season features plenty of new and returning characters. While many What If...? pitches were rejected, and even some perfect multiverse opportunities have been missed, the series has been able to tell original and unique stories in animation that run parallel to the proper MCU. Audiences can anticipate a final season that goes even bigger and more impactful on the Multiverse Saga than anything that has been seen before.
Many eagerly await the What If...? season 3 release date, and it now makes sense to take a look at the many different characters that are slated to appear in the series. While many of the actors from the MCU have voiced their variants, some have not. Before the series begins, and a plethora of familiar Marvel characters grace the small screen, it is worth investigating the cast list for the show.

Brady Corbet‘s ambitious epic The Brutalist opened Friday in the United States, allowing general audiences to see the film that critics have been raving about since it premiered at the Venice Film Festival on Sept. 1. Just how much have film journalists loved this expansive 215-minute film about a Hungarian architect and Holocaust survivor (played by Adrien Brody) who seeks a new life in the United States? Let us count the ways.
Based on 35 reviews compiled as of Dec. 20, the film has a sky-high Metacritic score of 91, indicating “universal acclaim” on the review aggregator. On Rotten Tomatoes the film is 96 percent fresh. Metacritic measures critical response on a sliding scale between zero and 100, while Rotten Tomatoes gives critics a binary choice: a film is either fresh or rotten. Keanu Reeves has become one of the most celebrated franchise actors working today. He rose to prominence with the 1999 film The Matrix, which went on to become an entire series. His role as Neo remains one of the most celebrated parts of his career to date, as moments from the sci-fi film have become iconic elements in film. Fast forward 15 years and Reeves made a name for himself once again playing the eponymous hit man in the John Wick series. The Chad Stahelski series has become key in Reeves' career, and he will reprise his role in Ballerina.
In addition to his action franchises, Reeves has also spent time working with award-winning directors. This includes a role in Point Break, which was one of the earlier works by Kathryn Bigelow. Bigelow would go on to win an Oscar for her work directing The Hurt Locker, becoming the first woman to win the award.

The Toronto Film Festival returned to full strength for its recent 2024 edition after the disruption of the pandemic and the 2023 Hollywood actors strike.
Now, as the prestigious event approaches its 50th year in 2025, TIFF organizers are looking to embrace an increasing confluence of technology and movies ahead of launching an official media content market in 2026.
Cameron Bailey, CEO of TIFF, doesn’t appear phased by criticism of the 2024 edition for having too few potential Oscar contenders in its opening weekend lineup after likely awards season entrants like Emilia Pérez, Anora and Conclave arrived in Toronto but debuted at Cannes, Venice or Telluride.
“Every festival looks at premier status, but we’ve learned over the years that films that launch at festivals with a number of big-name films, sometimes those films come out that same year, sometimes they come out the next year,” Bailey tells The Hollywood Reporter, pointing to Kathryn Bigelow...

With both “Conclave” to satisfy the middle-aged dads of the world yearning for a classic mid-scale thriller, and “The Return” to satisfy the middle-aged moms obsessed with history and buff Brits, it’s arguably never been a better time to have stock invested in Ralph Fiennes. A thespian of both the stage and screen, Fiennes has become a steady staple of the arts, fluent in both Shakespeare and splashy genre fare. So, too, has Fiennes become a staple of our lives; it almost feels like a rite of passage to learn that the man’s name is actually pronounced “Rafe.”
On the screen, Fiennes has excelled not only in his own performances—never delivering anything less than dignified, even in its delinquency—but in his choice of roles as well. Jeremy Renner’s portrayal of Hawkeye is a fan favorite in the MCU. His last live-action appearance was in the Hawkeye series, but he recently returned as a voice actor in What If…? Season 2, in the episode What If… Happy Hogan Saved Christmas?
There have been strong rumors in recent months about a possible second season of Hawkeye, which would bring Renner back into the spotlight. Renner recently attended the Red Sea International Film Festival (Rsiff) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where he talked about his career and his health following a life-threatening snowplow accident.
On January 1, 2023, he was hospitalized after a severe accident at home with his snowplow, which caused blunt chest trauma and 30 broken bones. The 14,330-pound snowplow ran over him.
He was flown to Renown Regional Medical Center, had surgery, and stayed in critical condition in the ICU. On January 17, he was discharged and went home. Ten weeks later,...

Jeremy Renner, who suffered a near-fatal snow plow accident in January 2023, spoke Tuesday about his recovery at an on-stage talk at Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea Film Festival. Asked if there were any “limitations” imposed by his injuries he said, “I don’t think of it as limitations – even though I’m 25% titanium, so fuck Iron Man.”
Renner, best known for playing Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has made a triumphant return to acting after the accident left him with blunt chest trauma and 38 broken bones.
“It’ll be two years in January, and I am very, very proud to overcome a great adversity in my life, and I’m forever grateful for all the love and support I’ve gotten from people all around the world, even those I never knew existed, that helped propel me to get better, and it’s the only thing that really kind...

The Los Angeles Film Critics Association named Sean Baker’s “Anora” its Best Picture for 2024. The critics group also awarded stars Mikey Madison and Yura Borisov with the Best Leading Performance and Best Supporting Performance, respectively. This year, the Lafca decided to spread the wealth and awarded two performers in each category, which remain gender neutral.
The Lafca spread the wealth around, but Baker also received the runner-up prizes for both Best Director and Best Screenplay. Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist” was named runner-up in the Best Picture category.
With New York kicking off awards season with the Gotham Awards and the NYFCC releasing their winners, the West coast finally jumped into the fray, with the Los Angeles Film Critics Association announcing their winners for 2024 on Sunday, December 8.

Oscar-winning indie studio Neon emerged as the big winner at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association’s 50th annual selections of the best films and performances, clinching top honors for two of its major contenders: the poignant dramedy “Anora” and the politically-charged thriller “The Seed of the Sacred Fig.”
“Anora” took home the best picture prize, following in the footsteps of past Lafca winners turned Oscar darlings such as “The Hurt Locker” (2009), “Moonlight” (2016) and “Parasite” (2019). It seems like smooth sailing to the Dolby Theatre (at least for a nomination) for the Sean Baker dramedy that won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
Mohammad Rasoulof directed, co-wrote and produced “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” under immense political pressure, resulting in the filmmaker being forced to flee Iran after facing an eight-year prison sentence and demands from authorities to withdraw the film from its Cannes premiere. His win...

15 years on, 2009 looks to be one of the best years for cinema in the 21st century. Several iconic directors produced some of their best work in 2009, including Kathryn Bigelow, Wes Anderson and Quentin Tarantino. The year also delivered some surprise hits, like Neil Blomkamp's District 9, which came out of nowhere to shake up the sci-fi genre and establish the director as a name worth keeping an eye on.
At the box office, the big story of 2009 was the record-breaking success of Avatar, which is something that continues to shape the movie industry. Other big financial winners were Pixar's Up, which is yet another animated classic from the studio, and The Hangover, which is the kind of comedy that probably wouldn't be as successful in today's industry. 2009's best movies encompass dramas, sci-fi, horror and more.

“A Different Man” was named the best independent film of the year at the 2024 Gotham Awards, which took place on Monday night in New York City.
The win for the drama starring Sebastian Stan came as a surprise at the end of a show in which “Nickel Boys” and “Sing Sing” had been the big winners, and in which “Anora” came in with the most nominations but left empty-handed.

Jeremy Renner is an award-winning actor and dedicated philanthropist whose commitment to giving back is as integral to his identity as his celebrated film roles. In 2023, he founded the RennerVation Foundation, a youth-focused nonprofit dedicated to creating meaningful opportunities for children in foster care and at-risk youth. To date, there have been 13 "Star Trek" feature films, with a 14th movie, "Section 31," scheduled to debut on Paramount+ on January 24, 2025. The films are, many Trekkies would agree, various degrees of good and bad. Some of the "Star Trek" films are among the best sci-fi movies ever made, while others are handily the worst. Many agree that Nicholas Meyer's 1982 film "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" is the best one, although J.J. Abrams' 2009 "Star Trek" is the highest-grossing. The four films based on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" -- that is: "Generations," "First Contact," "Insurrection," and "Nemesis" -- are all pretty middling, although many like the Borg action from "First Contact." My personal favorites are Robert Wise's 1979 epic "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," for its cerebral grandiosity, and Meyer's "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" for its political bent.
The films also fluctuate wildly in mere production quality.
