James Gunn is once again uniting a team of super-powered misfits in the new animated DC series, “Creature Commandos.” The “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “The Suicide Squad” filmmaker — and co-head of the new DC Universe — unites a cast full of familiar faces, including some you’ll recognize from “The Suicide Squad,” as a roster of less familiar superheroes, including Rick Flagg Sr., GI Robot and The Bride.
Check out a handy guide to the “Creature Commandos” cast and the DC characters to whom they’re lending their voices.

Amanda Waller is the imposing leader of A.R.G.U.S. (Advanced Research Group Uniting Super-Humans) and basically the closest thing the DC Universe has to its own Nick Fury. After the events of “The Suicide Squad,” Waller has been hemmed in; she can no longer use humans in her go-for-broke, off-the-books suicide missions. But don’t worry,...

Oscar winner Javier Bardem stars in his first television series as Jose Menendez, an abusive father who was brutally murdered by his sons in Netflix’s “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.” The Spanish actor hadn’t heard about the crime when it took over American media in 1989, but he accepted the part sight unseen because of showrunner Ryan Murphy‘s involvement, who had directed him in the 2010 film “Eat Pray Love.”
“Ryan was explaining to me what the case was about, and then he encouraged me to read about it,” Bardem reveals. “When I read it, I went ‘Oh, wow. This is very delicate,’ because of the issues that it touches. Sexual abuse, but also physical, emotional, psychological abuse, and the brutal murder of those parents.” Both Jose and his wife Kitty (played by Chloë Sevigny) were gunned down in their Beverly Hills home by Lyle (played by...

“Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” made its Netflix premiere on September 19, launching the case of two brothers convicted of murdering their parents back in the national spotlight after 35 years. The limited series was created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, and stars Nicholas Chavez and Cooper Koch as the titular characters.
Chronicling the abuse they suffered at the hands of their father, Jose Menendez (played by Javier Bardem), and their mother Kitty Menendez (played by Chloe Sevigny), the series sparked new debate about male survivors of sexual abuse, and if justice had really been served when Lyle and Erik were sentenced to life in prison following the brutal shooting.
On Saturday, November 2, Murphy was joined by cast members Cooper Koch, Nicholas Chavez, Javier Bardem, Chloe Sevigny, Nathan Lane, and Ari Graynor for a screening and Q & A panel hosted by Variety Deputy Awards and Features Editor, Jenelle Riley.

Exclusive: Amazon MGM Studios just won a battle for Love of Your Life, a spec by Nyad scribe Julia Cox, Deadline hears. Love of Your Life has been the talk of town this Halloween, and sources said the result is one of the biggest spec script deals in recent memory, landing in the $2 million range. Ryan Gosling is attached to produce with new producing partner Jessie Henderson at General Admission.
Numerous bids were proffered when CAA dropped the spec on the town, and one of the most intriguing bids came from Taylor Sheridan and Temple Hill’s Marty Bowen, who were ready to pay $2 million with a greenlight and a theatrical release. David Ellison’s Skydance got in the game with them, assuming the bid so they could keep their money in their pockets. That film would have gone through Paramount. Following the incredible success of “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan have teamed up to tackle the second installment of their “Monster” anthology series for Netflix, “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.”
The limited series seeks to discover who the real monsters in the high-profile murder trial were. The Menendez brothers captivated America, as their televised Court TV trial is one of the first of its kind. The two boys killed their parents on Aug. 20, 1989, at only 18 and 21 years old. Their counsel called it self defense, while the prosecution called them greedy. Both were convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after two trials.
Murphy assembled established actors like Javier Bardem, Nathan Lane, and Chloë Sevigny to embody the real-life adult characters but brought on some newcomers to portray the Menendez brothers themselves.

When it comes to the film industry, it is safe to say that there is a lot of competition. While most of the time, actors point their competitive nature at people they barely know, sometimes, it can be directly pointed toward someone they are related to. Such has been the case for siblings, Eric Roberts and Julia Roberts, who have not had the easiest time existing in the same space.

Ryan Murphy first started noodling on a TV show about the Menendez brothers in the wake of the success of Netflix’s “Dahmer,” which he co-created alongside his longtime collaborator Ian Brennan.
“One of the things that you and I didn’t know, but soon found out, is that there are literally thousands and thousands and thousands of TikToks from young people, specifically young women, talking about the Lyle and Erik Menendez case,” Murphy noted onstage to Brennan at an NYC premiere screening September 12 of the latest installment of their Netflix true crime anthology, “Monster,” this time “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.”
“I was blown away,” by the social media response, Brennan confirmed, “because it seemed so current to them. I think one of the one of the things is we finally have a vernacular to think about and discuss sex abuse and mental health that did not exist at the time.

The Dog Days of summer—vaguely from mid-July through mid-August, depending on who does the counting—may not seem like much of an Oscar crucible. You’d think most Academy voters would be sipping Margaritas in Malibu, or Limoncello Martinis somewhere on the Mediterranean.
But as often as not in the last fifteen years, the Dog Day bracket has produced a Best Picture nominee. And last year, of course, it brought a winner in Oppenheimer, which was released alongside fellow Best Picture nominee Barbie on July 21, and was still going gangbusters in mid-August.
There’s a certain rough charm to the Dog Day nominees. They tend to be audience favorites, movies that connect with the movie-hungry middle, which powers them into the Oscar race, whatever the somewhat fussier film professionals may think.

Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton entering into a unique arrangement, J.Lo fighting evil artificial intelligence, the roasting of an NFL legend, a retelling of the invention of the Pop Tart, Brooke Shields and Benjamin Bratt at war and John Mulaney’s six-night live comedy event from Los Angeles are some of the big titles hitting Netflix in May.
Debuting on May 3 is Jerry Seinfeld’s directorial debut, Unfrosted. The comedy legend works both sides of the camera for this humorous feature take on the birth of the Pop Tart. The movie is set in 1963 as breakfast cereal giants Kellogg’s and Post compete to become the first company to create a morning pastry. Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan and Amy Schumer also star, with Hugh Grant more than likely to steal the whole film with a turn as Tony the Tiger.

As summer approaches (for the Northern Hemisphere at least), Netflix is set to premiere a fresh season of one of its biggest hits.
Brigerton season 3 is set to arrive on May 16 and will debut a “new crop of debutantes” into the regency drama fray. Other original series of note this month include Indian drama Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar (May 1), the Jeff Daniels-starring A Man in Full (May 2), and intriguing Korean title The 8 Show (May 17). Of course, Netflix is also rolling out a suite of true crime docs and docuseries as well. Chief among those options is Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal on May 15.
It’s the movie side of things where Netflix is feeling particularly lively though. May 3 sees the arrival of Jerry Seinfeld Pop Tart comedy Unfrosted. That will be followed by rom-com Mother of the Bride (May 9) and the Jennifer Lopez-starring Atlas (May 24).

There are many coming-of-age stories that can take place in the transitory phase of maturity but a subgenre of the same is where Kaiju No. 8 lies. The subgenre is referred to as delayed coming of age. The themes of maturity, finding yourself in the world, and other such factors remain, except that the age of the protagonist is much past their 20s. One of the biggest examples of the same can be Julia Roberts’ Eat, Pray, Love.

Prime Video’s big February drop is Mr. & Mrs. Smith! No, not the 2005 Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie action movie, but a new TV series kinda based on it starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine. The set up for the show version? Glover and Erskine are two strangers who both get jobs at a shady spy agency and are asked to get married so that they can pretend to be a couple undercover, but things get more complicated when they start falling in love for real. Uh oh!
If you’re in the mood for a movie or two this month, you can also check out the Prime debuts of Strays, Bottoms, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. In the meantime, here’s everything coming to Amazon Prime Video and Freevee this month. Amazon Originals are accompanied by an asterisk!

It’s a fairly packed month on Hulu this February thanks to the addition of some interesting TV shows from FX and ABC. While the streamer’s own original content is somewhat limited – Life + Beth is returning for season 2 – you can also catch the new series of Feud this month. The new installment in Ryan Murphy’s juicy anthology show is based on the bestseller Capote’s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era by Laurence Leamer, and tells the story of Truman Capote’s betrayal and fall-out with New York’s most glamorous socialites. The cast is absolutely stacked, with Naomi Watts, Diane Lane, Chloë Sevigny and Calista Flockhart all swearing delicious revenge on Tom Hollander’s Capote.
Also via Hulu in February comes the third season of Abbott Elementary, along with new episodes of The Connors, The Good Doctor, Will Trent,...

“Doc,” the Italian medical procedural that’s a local hit and and major export, is getting a theatrical outing in Italy prior to TV play thanks to a deal between production company Lux Vide and Uci Cinemas.
In what is being touted as a milestone, the first two episodes of the show’s third season are set to screen in Uci Cinemas across Italy as an event release on Dec. 18 and 19, ahead of the full season release of “Doc” Jan. 11 on state broadcaster Rai’s flagship Rai 1 channel.
“‘Doc’ is a show of many firsts. Our first foray into the medical genre, which drew a record-breaking 30% average audience share for Rai; our first U.S. remake deal; and now an unprecedented [for Lux Vide] limited theatrical release,” said Luca Bernabei, CEO of the Fremantle-owned Lux Vide, in a statement. He went on to praise the show for “it’s distinctive flair and strong concept.

Julia Roberts is an icon of the romantic-comedy genre, but there’s one famous rom-com the Oscar-winner happened to turn down: Nora Ephron’s 1998 classic “You’ve Got Mail.” Roberts revealed the scoop during a recent appearance on Bravo’s “Watch What Happens Live.”
Ephron’s film memorably paired Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in the story of business rivals unaware they are falling in love with each other online. “You’ve Got Mail” marked the third Hanks-Ryan romantic comedy after “Joe Versus the Volcano” (1990) and “Sleepless in Seattle” (1993), the latter title also being directed by Ephron. Had Roberts taken the role, it would’ve extended her 1990s rom-com streak that already included hits like “Pretty Woman” (1990), “Notting Hill” (1999) and “My Best Friend’s Wedding” (1997).

Back in its heyday, How To Get Away With Murder was one of the hottest shows on television.
Thursday nights on ABC were once the night that Shonda Rhimes built from start to finish, with Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and the aforementioned legal drama setting the interwebs on fire every week.
The series was a bonafide hit from the start and constantly had social media ablaze as viewers were thrust into murderous coverups and shocking twists every season.

Turning any popular book into a movie is a minefield. Being too faithful can result in an overstuffed mess. Too unfaithful, you risk alienating a built-in fandom. But even greater consideration has to be given when adapting a nonfiction book into a narrative film. In cases like “Nomadland,” “Capote,” and the upcoming “Killers of the Flower Moon,” filmmakers toed that line by showing us their books’ factual cores through the eyes of dramatic protagonists.
On the flip side of the equation is “Origin,” Ava DuVernay’s awkward and ungainly new adaptation of the 2020 bestseller “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents” by Isabel Wilkerson. The misguided film comes across as a twisted sibling of “Eat Pray Love,” in which the book’s author becomes the film’s protagonist leading us on a world tour of historical atrocities.

Two decades ago, one jilted heart found its way to Italy as part of the iconic, genre-redefining film “Under the Tuscan Sun.” Starring Diane Lane as Frances, a San Francisco writer who jets to Europe after realizing her soon-to-be ex-husband is cheating on her, the 2003 film cemented the early aughts’ obsession with starting over again. “Under the Tuscan Sun” was based on a real-life Frances, author Frances Mayes to be exact, whose memoir was adapted by late writer-director Audrey Wells for the big screen.
Frances, newly jilted and with the emotional support of her best friend Patti (Sandra Oh), escapes both midlife crises and bad American men by traveling across the globe for a luxury vacation. She falls in love with a Tuscan villa and opts to renovate it while bonding with locals, including the seductive Marcello (Raoul Bova).

Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome back to the stage, Sex Bob-omb! Scott Pilgrim vs. The World was not able to beat The Expendables or Eat, Pray, Love when all three opened the same day at the box office back in 2010, but the off-beat comedy from Edgar Wright has developed a cult following ever since. Netflix has just premiered its first teaser at the anime adaptation series, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, which will be reuniting the entire cast of the film, plus has Edgar Wright on as executive producer. The series will have a total of eight episodes and is set to premiere on the streaming service this fall.
The official synopsis from Netflix reads,
“Scott Pilgrim meets the girl of his dreams, Ramona Flowers, but learns he must defeat her seven evil exes in order to date her. Then things get even more complicated. Based on the...

HBO’s Ballers, the docuseries Depp v. Heard, the Adam Sandler-produced You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah and interactive rom-com Choose Love are among the new projects debuting on Netflix in August.
After adding all five seasons of Insecure last month, in the first time an HBO original series was available on Netflix in the U.S., Netflix is adding yet another HBO title on Aug. 15: the Dwayne Johnson-fronted Ballers.
The streamer is also set to add HBO series Band of Brothers, The Pacific and Six Feet Under at a future date, due to a co-exclusive deal with Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max.
Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s headline-making 2022 defamation case, over a Washington Post op-ed in which Heard called herself a domestic abuse survivor, is the subject of the three-part Depp v. Heard docuseries, which combines footage that was televised and livestreamed...

August has arrived, and with it, the last full month of summer-worthy shows and flicks, at least for 2023. From all the summer sensations to food weather, carnival fun and, of course, the lack of school, the streamer’s film slate will update with some appropriate flicks like “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2,” “Eat Pray Love,” “Despicable Me” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” respectively.
If you’re one of those who senses the change in the air as soon as the salty summer heat gives way to crisp fall fog, “Heartstopper” Season 2, complete with its cartoon drawings of leaves, waits for you starting August 3. “The Lincoln Lawyer: Season 2 Part 2” concludes the two-part followup to the legal drama starring Manuel Garcia-Rulfo. “Heart of Stone,” a big tentpole film starring Gal Gadot and Jamie Dornan, promises action-lovers a good time.
For those who didn’t get enough of the Depp v.

With its list of new releases for August 2023, Netflix is giving the anime world another shot.
No, we’re not talking about the streamer’s usual anime offerings – which are present this month in the form of Ragnarok season 3 (Aug. 24) and other titles – we’re talking about Netflix’s attempt to make live-action anime adaptations a thing. Following the relative failure of its Cowboy Bebop remake, Netflix is giving it another go, this time with arguably an even bigger anime classic. One Piece will premiere on Aug. 31. Telling the story of beloved straw hat wearing pirate Monkey D. Luffy, this adaptation will attempt to do original creator Eiichiro Oda and his many fans proud.
