After over 20 years have passed since the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series ended, it looks like the franchise is set to tell more stories. According to Deadline, a follow-up series is getting closer to a pilot order from Hulu, with Sarah Michelle Gellar expected to lead the cast and Oscar winner (and self-professed Buffy fan), Chloé Zhao, slated to direct the pilot.
The reboot will start a writers’ room shortly, a signal that Hulu and the studios have good expectations that the pilot could turn into a full-fledged series.

On one level, the return of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” with Sarah Michelle Gellar — the news of which Variety broke today — is the most 2020s thing that could happen. Updating a beloved TV series from the last four decades with at least some of the original cast has become a central pillar of our current popular culture. From “And Just Like That” on Max to “That ’90s Show” on Netflix to “Star Trek: Picard,” “Frasier” and whatever new version of “Dexter” is streaming on Paramount+, we’re habitually invited now to live in updated versions of our TV pasts.
A new “Buffy,” however, feels more totemic. There are all the TV history reasons, of course: Dismissed when it premiered on the nascent network The WB in 1997 as a mid-season replacement, “Buffy” rapidly roundhouse kicked itself into the vanguard of both television form and content. By transforming the horror movie final...

Buffy the Vampire Slayer concluded in 2003 after seven seasons on the air, and remains a beloved and influential show to this day. There's been talk over the years of rebooting Buffy, with original series creator Joss Whedon working with showrunner Monica Owusu-Breen on a new show a while back. But that idea fizzled out a couple of years ago, probably because Whedon was accused of toxic behavior on his sets and has since been excommunicated from Hollywood.
But lately there have been signs of something stirring, with original series star Sarah Michelle Gellar coming around to the idea of a revival. “I always used to say no because it’s in its bubble, and it’s so perfect,” she said last month. "But watching [recent reboot shows] Sex And The City and seeing Dexter, and realizing there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe.'”

We have been in need of some good news, and Sarah Michelle Gellar just delivered the most unexpected but necessary batch of good news ever. As reported by Deadline, there's a new Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot in the works at Hulu. Yes, you read that correctly. A Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot. In the works. In the year 2025. Buffy is back, baby! Well, maybe.
Hulu has yet to officially order a pilot, but the development process has taken great shape as of the announcement to the press. Gellar will reprise her iconic role as Buffy Summers, which she played for all seven seasons of The WB/Upn original classic. The Hollywood Reporter notes that Gellar will likely recur as Buffy as she takes a young new slayer under her wing.

*Warning: This article contains Buffy The Vampire Slayer spoilers*
As the saying goes, "Once a slayer, always a slayer!" And that certainly looks to be the case for Sarah Michelle Gellar, who hung up her stake as eponymous bloodsucker hunter Buffy Summers when Joss Whedon's supernatural coming-of-age series Buffy The Vampire Slayer ended its seven season run back in 2003. Yes, 22 years after surviving the collapse of the Hellmouth, Smg's iconic heroine is coming back back back for a reboot/follow-up series. And what's more, there's quite the team coming together to mastermind the chosen one's return.
Per Deadline's reporting, Oscar winning Nomadland director Chloé Zhao — a self-confessed longtime Buffyverse stan — is being lined up to direct the sequel series' pilot, which hails from Poker Face showrunning duo Nora and Lilla Zuckerman. The understanding at this stage is that the Zuckermans' Buffy project is close to confirming a pilot order from Hulu,...

Six and a half years have gone by since it was announced that a reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was in development with Monica Owusu-Breen, co-creator of the TV show Midnight, Texas, writing, executive producing, and serving as showrunner. It was said that the new show would be “contemporary, building on the mythology of the original.” That project never made it into production – and now, it looks like we’re going to be getting a Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival instead, with Sarah Michelle Gellar back as the title character!
In early 2023, Gellar said she had no interest in ever playing Buffy again. She told SFX magazine, “I am very proud of the show that we created and it doesn’t need to be done. We wrapped that up. I am all for them continuing the story, because there’s the story of female empowerment. I love the way...

We have been hearing talks about a potential “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” reboot for many years now, but none of those potential projects ever came with the extra bonus of Sarah Michelle Gellar returning to the role. But something has changed on that front, with Deadline reporting that the actress is on board to return for a small screen revival over on Hulu!
Deadline reports this afternoon, “A follow up series is nearing a pilot order from Hulu, with Sarah Michelle Gellar expected to star.” And Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) is set to direct!
The new take is being described as “the next chapter in the Buffyverse.”
Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (“Poker Face”) wrote the pilot. Deadline also notes in today’s report, “Beyond the pilot order, I hear the reboot is starting a writers room soon, a sign that Hulu and the studios have high expectations for the project going to series.

[This story contains spoilers from the first eight episodes of Dexter: Original Sin.]
Three years after concluding with Dexter: New Blood, Showtime’s favorite serial killer is back in action with Dexter: Original Sin. The prequel series stars Patrick Gibson as a younger version of Dexter, with Michael C. Hall providing narration (and a surprising on-camera return as well). Set during Dexter’s earliest days working alongside Miami Metro, Original Sin comes packed with returning characters, tropes and Easter eggs aplenty for fans of the original show.
“We had this canon of lore from nine seasons of the show from which to draw,” Dexter franchise veteran and Original Sin showrunner Clyde Phillips told The Hollywood Reporter when launching the prequel series, which is now eight episodes into its 10-episode season. “If people like Easter eggs, this show is going to be an Easter egg hunt. We would write the shows and start shooting them. Someone would come in and say,...

Paramount+’s Landman continued its upward trajectory in the first few days of 2025, hitting its best viewing-time mark so far in Nielsen’s streaming rankings. Squid Game had a second straight huge week for Netflix as well.
The Korean hit drew just under 4.6 billion minutes of viewing in the United States for the week of Dec. 30-Jan. 5, topping the 4 billion mark again a week after its season two premiere. The series fell by less than 7 percent week-to-week from the 4.92 billion minutes it had for its long-awaited return.
Landman snagged 1.3 billion minutes of watch time in the week leading up to its ninth episode. The Taylor Sheridan series, starring Billy Bob Thornton, has improved its totals in every week since it first hit the rankings in late November.

Christmas week brought a bounty of viewing to streaming platforms, with eight titles crossing the billion-minute mark in Nielsen’s streaming ratings. Netflix’s Squid Game, however, stood well apart from the pack.

There are a lot of people who want Star Trek to be Ricky and Morty, True Detective, or Stranger Things. They want this marvelous franchise to "expirament" in ways that don't help it grow. Time and time and time again we find out that the best Star Trek are the shows that stick to being Star Trek.
When Star Trek: Enterprise dropped the 'Star Trek' to just be Enterprise, fans weren't happy with it. When Star Trek's Discovery and Picard went super dark, fans were unhappy about it. When the franchise launched Lower Decks, fans weren't happy with it. Save for Discovery's later seasons and Picard's last season, none of those shows really trended well with the fandom or the casuals.
Yet, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a ratings hit. Why? Because it adhered to the old formula of Star Trek shows. Which is what Star Trek fans want.

Dexter fans everywhere lost their minds not only when Showtime announced a long-awaited sequel to the hit series, but also when news of a prequel hit the airwaves. Dexter: New Blood premiered in November 2021 to underwhelming reviews, and prequel Dexter: Original Sin premiered in December 2024 to raving reviews, and is currently airing on Showtime and Paramount+ with Showtime. With the prequel approaching its end this February, the franchise’s second sequel is gearing up to make a big ole bloody splash—er, excuse me, spatter. Michael C. Hall has revealed that production has officially begun on Dexter: Resurrection and is on track for a summer 2025 premiere.
Hall shared the exciting news when he took to social media to confirm he is, indeed, “looking forward to taking another thrill ride”, and to us taking the ride with him. He of course reprises his role as America’s favorite vigilante serial killer.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Dexter: New Blood.
It may have been almost four years now since Michael C. Hall's Dexter Morgan was both figuratively and literally put on ice during the dramatic climax of Dexter: New Blood, but the crime solving serial killer and his namesake franchise have scarcely been more alive. With Paramount+ and Showtime prequel series Dexter: Original Sin already proving a hit with fans and critics alike, production is already underway on Dexter: Resurrections, a present day sequel series set after New Blood's trigger happy ending. And in a major casting coup, none other than Beatrix Kiddo herself, Uma Thurman, has joined the show as a series regular.

Patrick Dempsey's potential Scream 7 return has been clarified after a surprise casting announcement. In the slasher franchise's 2022 legacy sequel, it was revealed that longtime final girl Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) is married to a man named Mark, which seemed to imply that she had married Dempsey's Scream 3 character, detective Mark Kincaid. However, it was recently revealed that the upcoming Scream 7, which is currently filming under the auspices of director Kevin Williamson, had cast Community star Joel McHale in the role of Mark instead, and that the character's last name is Evans.
Entertainment Weekly has followed up on this surprising casting announcement. After reaching out to representatives for both the production company Spyglass and Patrick Dempsey, they learned that the actor will not be appearing in the movie whatsoever. Original Dexter star Julia Stiles has weighed in on the possibility of her character returning for the upcoming Dexter: Resurrection sequel show. Stiles joined the cast of the hit serial killer drama throughout 2010’s season 5 run as Lumen Pierce, a woman who was rescued by Michael C. Hall’s titular character from a group of serial rapists and murderers. Following the death of his wife in the season 4 finale, Dexter grew close to Lumen as he assisted her in exacting her revenge on the men who had imprisoned and tortured her.
Speaking with ScreenRant for her directorial debut, Wish You Were Here, Stiles spoke about possibly reprising her role for the upcoming Dexter: Resurrection series. Admitting that while she loved working on the show, Stiles suggested that Lumen’s story was effectively finished at the end of Dexter season 5 and was unsure how her character “would descend into darkness again.

Dexter: Resurrection has begun filming. Michael C. Hall originated the title role - a moral serial killer who hunts down criminals who have escaped justice - in Showtime's Dexter, which ran for eight seasons between 2006 and 2013. The upcoming Dexter: Resurrection is set to follow the character's post-New Blood story. The Dexter prequel series Dexter: Original Sin has a prime opportunity to fix one of the most overlooked plot holes that the original show never addressed. There weren't many plot holes at all in the original show, but one subtle issue persisted through all eight seasons of Dexter. For a show as well written as Dexter was, it's almost unheard of for a plot hole to be completely overlooked like that. It also concerns a central part of Dexter's killing ritual, so as minor as it may seem, it has massive implications on his ability to evade the police.
Even though Dexter ignored this plot hole for years, Original Sin is going to have to address it soon. Because of Original Sin's timeline, the prequel show has done everything from solving Dexter: New Blood's M99 vs. ketamine debate to explaining why he started showing his victims photos of their victims.

Warning! This article contains Spoilers for Dexter: Original Sin episode 6 and Dexter season 1.One of the main villains of the original Dexter may have already appeared in Dexter: Original Sin, and episode 6 just made the theory even more believable. The original Dexter featured several memorable serial killers, from the infamous Trinity Killer to the less beloved Brain Surgeon. Most of them, however, couldn't possibly show up in Dexter: Original Sin due to the fact that they met Dexter years after the prequel show's 1991 setting. One of them, however, may have already made his introduction to Original Sin, and he may have already started increasing his kill count.

Despite having one of the worst series finales in TV history, Dexter is still widely regarded as one of the best shows of the last 20 years.
Michael C. Hall’s compelling performance as the titular serial killer drew acclaim, and the series broke new ground for Showtime at a time when the premium cable network needed hit series that were big around the globe.
The TV market was different in 2006 when the series premiered.

Thanks to the current trend of turning any moderately successful property into a franchise, what was once a diamond in the rough has been milked dry. At least two more shows are still coming.

Warning! This article contains Spoilers for Dexter: Original Sin season 1, episode 6.Levi Reed (Jeff Daniel Phillips) tried to convince Dexter Morgan (Patrick Gibson) that they were the same in Dexter: Original Sin, but there's another serial killer who is much more similar to Dexter. There have been plenty of serial killers in Dexter history who drew parallels between themselves and Dexter, and Original Sin just added another to the list. At the end of Original Sin episode 6, Levi Reed tried to convince Dexter that they were the same, and he actually had a point. What Reed didn't realize, however, is that Dexter is much more similar to a different character in Original Sin.
While he was on Dexter's kill table, Levi Reed said that they both love the act of killing, but Dexter asserted that they were different because he only targeted people who deserved to die, not innocent people and children.
