Dexter: Original Sin is certainly drawing mixed feelings from fans of the franchise. Even though the series is getting a lot of acclaim and recognition for its quality, many believe it simply should not exist. Considering the Dexter franchise has already told quite a comprehensive story, one cannot help but wonder if there is a need for more additions.

With Dexter: Resurrection having already been confirmed to continue the story of Dexter’s son, many have questioned the need for a prequel series about a character that fans already know so much about. With some believing it to be an attempt at milking the character, it would seem that this wasn’t the original plan.

This post contains spoilers for "Dexter" and "Dexter: New Blood."
"Tonight's the night. And it's gonna happen again and again. Has to happen." These opening lines grace the pilot episode of "Dexter," in which blood splatter specialist Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) drives around while being on the prowl. What sets this show apart from most police procedurals is its upfront positioning of Dexter as a morally complex figure, a killer who (mostly) murders other killers who have managed to escape the justice system. However, this moral positioning starts to unravel once his meticulous plans start spiraling out of control and jeopardizing the faux-identity he has painstakingly crafted over the years. This tension between our intimate knowledge of Dexter's skewed vigilantism and the escalating suspicion about his crimes grants "Dexter" the edge required to become the tense, thrilling character-focused procedural that it is.

Showtime wasted no time greenlighting Dexter: Original Sin after New Blood’s record-breaking finale. While fans were shocked by Dexter’s end, the network acted quickly, opting for a prequel instead of a direct sequel. How’s that for timing?
Showrunner Clyde Phillips was all set to dive into a sequel. “We wrote all 10 episodes of the sequel,” Phillips revealed, adding that things got a little wild when MTV Entertainment’s Chris McCarthy came on board. McCarthy, fresh off the success of Yellowstone’s prequels, wasn’t into sequels. He wanted Original Sin. He told Phillips, “I’m not in the sequel business; I’m in the prequel business,” just like that, a Dexter prequel was born. Phillips quickly pitched it, and McCarthy’s four-word response sealed the deal: “Phenomenal. I love it.”
And bam, production kicked off.

In Friday’s episode of Dexter: Original Sin, our titular killer with a code experiences some normal, non-murdery feelings when a child — Judge Powell’s abducted son Jimmy — is sadly found dead, his body strung from a bridge.
Dexter has a panicked, sickened feeling after seeing his first dead kid, and the whole experience shakes him to his core. Harry assures his son that it’s a good thing that Dexter feels so spun by the sight of a dead child. So while Miami Metro deals with the Powell case, Harry sends Dexter to another scene dealing with a dead prostitute.

Fans of Showtime’s “Dexter” series are noticing that Sergeant James Doakes isn’t in “Dexter: Original Sin,” the new spinoff. The show takes place in 1991 before Doakes started working at the Miami Metro Police Department, so he is not there.
The series is about Dexter Morgan when he was younger and shows how he started as a forensic expert and a vigilante killer. While many characters from the original series are back, including Angel Batista, Vince Masuka, and Maria Laguerta, Sergeant Doakes is noticeably absent. He is known for his intense attitude and suspicion of Dexter.
Based on the show’s timing, Doakes could still be in the US Army Rangers or just starting as a police officer somewhere else during “Original Sin.” The third episode of the series introduces Maria Laguerta, who transfers to Miami Metro and shows that important new employees are still coming to the department.

The Dexter universe is growing larger by the second. Dexter: Original Sin is currently telling the origins of the young serial killer, but another prequel series could soon follow. Deadline reports that a prequel series revolving around the Trinity Killer (played by John Lithgow in the original series) is still “in development” at Paramount+.
The Trinity Killer prequel series was actually reported to be in condition in early 2023, but it’s been a long time since we’ve heard anything about it. Dexter showrunner Clyde Phillips and Dexter writer/producer Scott Reynolds will serve as co-creators and executive producers of the Trinity Killer prequel series. Phillips even revealed that John Lithgow has agreed to come back and provide the inner voice of his younger self, much in the same way Michael C. Hall is doing for Dexter: Original Sin.
“We wrote the entire Trinity Killer series.

Exclusive: The Dexter Trinity Killer prequel series, following the makings of the notorious serial killer played by John Lithgow in the mothership series, remains “in development” at Paramount+ with Showtime and has come a long way since it was originally announced in early 2023 as being in the exploration stages, sources close to production tell Deadline.
Original Dexter showrunner Clyde Phillips and fellow Dexter veteran Scott Reynolds serve as co-creators and executive producers of the Trinity Killer spinoff prequel, we hear. They held a development room for the project earlier this spring. As scripts were being written, there were erroneous media reports that the project was not moving forward which was never the case, sources said.
Phillips shared an update on the Trinity Killer offshoot with Deadline while promoting Dexter: Original Sin in New York City earlier this month.

The crime drama series Dexter originally aired on Showtime for eight seasons, from 2006 to 2013, then it was revived with a season called Dexter: New Blood in 2021, and now a prequel series called Dexter: Original Sin is airing on Showtime and the Paramount+ streaming service. Since the show takes place 15 years before the original show, it required a new cast to bring younger versions of the Dexter characters to life – and during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, actors James Martinez and Alex Shimizu revealed what it was like to take on the roles of Detective Angel Batista and forensics expert Vince Masuka.
Martinez follows in the footsteps of David Zayas to play Batista, and he told The Hollywood Reporter that he and Zayas knew each other from the New York theater community before he got the job on Dexter: Original Sin. “I’ve always been a fan of his stage work.

In a spinoff-laden 2024 that even gave Scar from “The Lion King” a sneaky origin story, it’s no wonder that Showtime’s foremost serial killer is back for “Dexter: Original Sin.”
The new prequel series is streaming on Paramount+ with Showtime and — spoiler alert — begins by foreshadowing Michael C. That reveal puts even more pressure on “Original Sin” star Patrick Gibson to nail his rendition of the blood-thirsty title character at 20.

When Dexter: Original Sin viewers see the fedora and hear the giggle, they know who’s coming.
For eight seasons on the original Dexter, the audience of Showtime’s hit serial killer series became familiar with the main players on the Miami Metro Homicide team where Michael C. Hall’s starring Dexter Morgan worked. Two of those characters were Detective Angel Batista, played by David Zayas, and forensics expert Vince Masuka, played by C.S. Lee.
Prequel series Dexter: Original Sin, which arrived on Paramount+ last week, heads back to the 1990s to show how Dexter (played here by Patrick Gibson) became the blood splatter analyst by day and serial killer by night who viewers were introduced to in the 2006 series. James Martinez and Alex Shimizu take on the Batista and Masuka roles in the prequel, bringing back their signature fedora and giggle, respectively.

The following article discusses fictional violence and sexual assault
From its thrilling highs to its confusing lows, "Dexter" remained one of the most arresting shows on television throughout its eight-season run thanks almost entirely to the colorful cast of serial killers that populated its fictional version of Miami, Florida. It's strange that the world of "Dexter" has not only concentrated several dozen of the strangest criminals to ever exist into one city but has multiple killers there who almost double the body count of the most deadly serial killer the country has ever seen.
To understand how wild the characters of "Dexter" truly were, we've gone over all eight seasons of the show's original run and its sequel miniseries, "Dexter: New Blood," to rank the top 10 deadliest serial killers to appear on the show. This includes all of its most dangerous and memorable characters, from those sociopaths who took lives...

It's been awesome to see Dexter character favorites in this prequel, such as Vince Masuka (Alex Shimizu) and Det. Angel Batista (James Martinez). Episode 3 ups the ante and shows us the moment when Maria Laguerta (Christina Milian) first arrived at Miami Metro.
She makes quite the entrance, right on the heels of the media frenzy around the Jimmy Powell case.

I don’t know about you guys, but I’ve been waiting on a Dexter prequel series since we were first introduced to the lovable anti-hero protagonist in 2006. As such, I’m super stoked to report to you that Dexter: Original Sin is righteously living up to the task. Though it’s early on in the series, it’s doing a bang-up job of satiating our curiosity to know more about Dexter’s life as a kid living with and learning to tame a “Dark Passenger”. Episode 2 takes us deeper into the vigilante serial killer’s young psyche and introduces us to more of his crucial first moments.
In the original series, we learn Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) is a top-notch blood spatter analyst for Miami Metro Homicide. He’s also a vigilante serial killer, who only takes out other killers. He’s lived with an urge for...

Waymond Lee, best known for his role in Comedy Central’s “Workaholics,” has died. He was 72.
TMZ was the first to report the news and received confirmation of Waymond Lee’s passing via his wife, Diane Lee, and his sister, Norine Lee. The actor died Dec. 18 after a long battle with Als, otherwise known as Lou Gerigs Disease, a nervous system affliction that breaks down the nerves in the body, causing the muscles to weaken.
Lee was first diagnosed with a brain disease in October but testing earlier this month revealed it was Als.
Waymond Lee appeared in 44 episodes of the Emmy-nominated comedy “Workaholics” as Waymond, an often silent and unassuming co-worker of the show’s main trio of odd-ball roommates. The workplace sitcom ran for 86 episodes from 2011-2017, and followed three southern Californian slackers played by Blake Anderson, Adam Devine and Anders Holm, who, as a collective, were waggishly labeled the “Workaholics.

Det. Maria Laguerta has entered the chat.
In Episode 3 of Dexter: Original Sin, the ambitious future captain formerly portrayed by Lauren Velez takes her very first steps into the halls of Miami Metro Pd. While fans might be celebrating yet another franchise favorite’s return, Captain Spencer feels otherwise. Seconds after she enters, he reads a quote she gave the Miami Herald where she clocks the amount of homicide cases that have “slipped through the cracks.” Spencer says Maria’s been sent by the commissioner to “clean things up,” and needless to say, he’s not happy to have her sticking around.

Over the years, we’ve welcomed and then lost a bunch of sci-fi and fantasy shows. Some of them were canceled way too soon, leaving us with a lot of questions. A lot of these deserve to make a comeback in some sort of way.
Sometimes shows actually do come back. Series like Night Court and Dexter are getting revivals (and prequels) while shows like Matlock and Hawaii Five-o are getting or have had reboots happen. It’s rare that the sci-fi and fantasy genres get the same treatment, though, and this is the genre with some of the best storytelling.
Here are five such series that deserve to make a comeback, and one of them is from 2024.

For his second murderous outing, Dexter Morgan takes the alias of Patrick Bateman, one of the most infamous serial killers in fiction. The second and third episodes of Dexter: Original Sin mostly center around Dex’s unofficial investigation into a loan shark named Tony Ferrer, aka Handsome Tony, who kills his debtors when they fail to pay him back. And while Dex is looking for evidence against Tony so he can satisfy his code, the episodes make short visits to the past where, through several flashbacks, we get to know how Tony’s adoptive father Harry met his biological mother, Laura Moser. In the present day, Miami Metro is also investigating the kidnapping of Judge Powell’s young son, Jimmy, who was abducted on his way back home from school. So, without further ado, let’s take a look at all the important events of Dexter: Original Sin episodes 2 and...

Jennifer Carpenter should be proud. Her character that audiences fell in love with over Dexter’s nine-season run is in good f–king hands.
In the second episode of Dexter: Original Sin, the foul-mouthed Debra Morgan (Molly Brown) is as angsty as ever, but with good reason. While Dexter starts his fancy new internship, Deb is feeling on the outs of her familial trio, expressing her feelings in the only way she knows how: with curse words. She tells a friend: “My dad and my brother are so far up each other’s asses, they don’t even know I exist!

Television has long been a mirror for society, reflecting its struggles, triumphs, and evolving norms.
In the past, shows like All in the Family and The Jeffersons addressed social issues with a deft touch, blending humor, drama, and raw honesty to create stories that resonated deeply.
These weren’t just messages wrapped in a script; they were authentic depictions of life, sparking conversations while still entertaining.
Charlie and Brian – Shrinking (Apple TV+)
Today, representation on TV has grown exponentially, with efforts to include diverse voices and perspectives.
But as these efforts increase, so does the challenge of balancing authenticity with intention.
Too often, stories now seem designed to meet quotas rather than create characters that truly connect with viewers. The result? Narratives that can feel rushed, hollow, or even alienating.
Representation was groundbreaking in the golden age of socially conscious TV because it felt organic.

In the original Dexter series, Maria Laguerta and Angel Batista made for one divisive on-screen pairing. Some fans loved to see the good lieutenant and the otherwise-unlucky-in-love detective fall into each other’s arms halfway through the series, while others might’ve groaned at the predictability of their pairing… and the messy aftermath. Could it be, though, that they were fated to hook up in the events of the original show simply because they’d been there before? Judging by the set up in Dexter: Original Sin‘s latest episode, “Miami Vice,” it sure seems that way. The third episode in the Paramount+ with Showtime prequel series introduces audiences to Maria Laguerta as she first sets foot in Miami-Metro Police Department with a massive chip on her shoulder — much to the chagrin of the current captain (Patrick Dempsey). “The force was against her… There’s no silver spoon in her mouth.

[Warning: The following post contains spoilers for Dexter: Original Sin Episodes 2 and 3, “Kid in a Candy Store” and “Miami Vice.”] You know the one. There’s a scene in Dexter that’s so disturbing it makes everything about Dexter Morgan suddenly make sense. Here he is, a two-year-old child who’s been left for dead and screaming in a pool of his own mother’s blood after watching her be dismembered by the cartel. He’s found and instantly adopted by Harry Morgan, who tries to provide him with a safe and loving home, but the trauma has already been tattooed on the boy’s heart and mind. Dexter fans have seen flashes of this scene so many times, and it looks like that moment may come back into play in a big way in Dexter: Original Sin — and possibly with a new detail we haven’t seen before. In Episode 2 of the Paramount+ with Showtime prequel series,...

It sounds like Sarah Michelle Gellar might be willing to sharpen some stakes and rejoin the battle against the creatures of the night after all.
There's been talk of a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot in some form or another for over a decade at this stage, but last year, we learned that the latest attempt to revive the franchise featuring a Black lead from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. scribe Monica Owusu-Breen had been put on pause.
Whether that series or some other incarnation of Buffy ever sees the light of day remains to be seen, but one person who could turn out to be the deciding factor is the actress who played Buffy Summers herself.
Gellar has previously dismissed the idea of returning as Buffy for any proposed revival of the show.

In an unexpected twist, the Dexter franchise is reviving its complicated lead character with the release of “Dexter: Original Sin,” a prequel series that revisits Dexter Morgan’s origins. This series, currently available on Paramount+ with Showtime, takes viewers back to 1991, detailing Dexter’s early transition into the infamous Bay Harbor Butcher.
Showrunner Clyde Phillips, who also wrote the disputed finale of “Dexter: New Blood,” has created a gripping twist that brings Dexter back to life after his apparent death in the previous season. Contrary to the assumptions made by “New Blood,” in which his estranged son kills Dexter, the prequel shows that he lives. The first episode depicts Dexter being rescued from the woods and transferred to a hospital, opening the way for a more in-depth investigation of his background.

We could possibly be seeing another beloved television series get the reboot treatment soon, and this show is one many fans have been hoping to see return in some way. It's the hit supernatural horror series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and the show's main star recently announced that she'd be down to reprise her role as the titular character.
During a recent episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, Christian Slater and Sarah Michelle Gellar sat down with host Drew Barrymore to discuss their new show, Dexter: Original Sin. At one point during the interview, Barrymore asked Gellar if she'd be open to returning for a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot. Of course, this question got the audience immediately clapping as they awaited her response.
This wasn't the first time that Gellar was asked this question. When she was asked about a Buffy reboot in the past, she pretty much shut down the idea.

Plot: Miami, 1991. When his bloodthirsty urges can’t be ignored any longer, young Dexter Morgan must learn to channel his inner darkness as he transitions from student to avenging serial killer with the guidance of his father, Harry.
Review: Fans have loved Dexter since it premiered on Showtime in 2006. Running for eight seasons and ninety-six episodes, the serial killer series ended as the most-watched finale in Showtime history when it aired in 2013. Eight years later, the series was revived as the limited series Dexter: New Blood, which concluded with the death of Michael C. Hall’s Dexter Morgan. Now, showrunner Clyde Phillips brings back the character yet again for the prequel Dexter: Original Sin, a ten-episode look back at the formative years of the blood splatter technician for the Miami Police, who also happens to be a serial killer. Boasting a retro-90s vibe and a cast that includes Christian Slater,...
