For many of us, spooky season lasts all year long, especially if you are a fan of horror movies. Just before Halloween back in 2022, it was announced that Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner – who both have experience working in the Scream franchise, as Fitzgerald was in the Scream TV series and Gallner appeared in the 2022 Scream movie – were set to star in the “cat and mouse thriller” Strange Darling. A few months ago, we learned that Magenta Light Studios will be giving Strange Darling a wide theatrical release in the United States on August 23rd – and now a trailer has arrived online to give us a preview of what this movie will have in store for us when it reaches the big screen in a couple months. Can you believe it’s already been fifteen years since 2009? I feel older than Jason’s mother’s head. But never mind all that. We’re going to look into the past in celebratory fashion today and take a month-to-month look at what the world of horror looked like back in 2009.

The dreaded month of January kicked things off in usual January fashion with a forgettable title, The Unborn. A David S. Goyer picture that’s not very memorable but managed to be the sixth most successful horror film of 2009 domestically, raking in over $42 million at the box office.

Right behind it on the calendar was Patrick Lussier’s My Bloody Valentine 3D starring “Supernatural” actor Jensen Ackles. This slasher remake took the idea of January horror and embraced it, making a silly and gory slasher that was the world’s first R-rated film to ever use Real3D technology.

A year and a half ago, it was announced that Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner – who both have experience working in the Scream franchise, as Fitzgerald was in the Scream TV series and Gallner appeared in the 2022 Scream movie – were set to star in the “cat and mouse thriller” Strange Darling. Now we know when we’re going to have a chance to see this movie, as Variety has confirmed that veteran producer Bob Yari’s new company Magenta Light Studios has secured the U.S. distribution rights to the film and they’re planning to give it a wide theatrical release on August 23rd.

2023 was a solid year for horror films, and even still, there were plenty of gems that went criminally underseen. Fortunately, because horror fans are some of the most rabid (see: passionate) fans around, even movies denied multi-million dollar ad campaigns can still find their people through word-of-mouth praise, fan art, and obsessive gushing. We’ve seen a couple casting announcements for writer/director Parker Finn’s sequel to his 2022 horror film Smile (read our review Here, watch the movie Here), which is aiming for an October 18, 2024 theatrical release date. Last month, it was announced that Naomi Scott of Aladdin and Charlie’s Angels has been cast in Smile 2, and yesterday we learned that Lukas Gage of The White Lotus and You is in the cast as well… and when seeing those announcements, I could only wonder, “Where is Kyle Gallner?” A genre regular, Gallner had a role in Smile, and his character made it through the whole movie. Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”

There’s something frustrating about a film that begins with a lot of potential, and then thoroughly squanders it.

Writer/director Daniel Farrands’ The Amityville Murders is one such film. It’s one of the few “true” entries from the last dozen or so films, in that it actually tackles the Amityville story by focusing on the true crime murders of the DeFeo family. It’s well-shot, looks good, has mostly decent (albeit broad) performances.

These are all things that many of the IP cash-grab entries have been lacking.

Unfortunately it’s also incredibly sensational, relies too heavily on repetitive supernatural elements, and – most egregiously – features a distasteful ending that highlights Farrands’ unfortunate tendency to exploit real life tragedy for cash.

Cinematic universes are all the rage now but it's easy to forget how recent a phenomenon this actually is. The notion of a cinematic universe didn't really exist until around 2010 when it became clear what Marvel Studios was doing with its various superhero franchises in the lead-up to the record-breaking "The Avengers" in the summer of 2012. Sure, we had Kevin Smith's films making up the View Askewniverse starting with "Clerks" in 1994 -- not to mention Universal's monster movie crossovers from decades earlier. Still, once Marvel perfected the model, Hollywood chased it down rabidly. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it fails spectacularly. But arguably nobody has done it better this side of Marvel than James Wan and "The Conjuring" universe.

Genre regulars Kyle Gallner and Holland Roden star in the horror psychological thriller Mother, May I?, which will be receiving a theatrical and VOD release from Dark Sky Films this Friday, July 21st. With that date just a few days away, we’ve gotten our hands on the trailer for the film, and you can check it out in the embed above.

The feature writing and directing debut of Laurence Vannicelli, Mother, May I? has the following synopsis: Emmett wants to clean and flip his recently deceased mother’s house: get in, get out, and avoid any trauma still lingering from when she abandoned him as a young child. Anya, his fiancé, see’s this as an opportunity to finally force Emmett to deal with his trauma because she believes it is preventing him from being the partner she needs. So she convinces him to take mushrooms to get him to let go.

Blumhouse Television and MGM+ have a deal to produce eight original films together. A House on the Bayou, American Refugee, Torn Hearts, Unhuman, The Visitor, There’s Something Wrong the Children, and Unseen were part of this deal. The eighth film in the series is The Passenger, which Paramount Home Entertainment will be giving a digital and VOD release on August 4th, with an MGM+ release to follow later in the year. With the release date swifty approaching, a trailer for The Passenger has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.

With its list of new releases for May 2023, Hulu is relying on an acclaimed original and a whole lotta FX.

The acclaimed original in question in The Great season 3. Premiering on May 12, this historical black comedy with continue the story of Catherine the Great (Elle Fanning) and her pal Peter III (Nicholas Hoult). The other Hulu original series of note this month is The Clearing on May 24. Based on the best-selling crime novel In the Clearing this story will follow a story inspired by the real life events behind Australian cult “The Family.”

For its other TV options in May, Hulu is turning to its cable partner FX. Class of ’09, an FBI thriller starring Kate Mara and Brian Tyree Henry, premieres on May 10. That will be followed by The Secrets of Hillsong, a docuseries investigating the controversial church on May 20.

“The Great” returns to Hulu for Season 3 on May 12. Elle Fanning portrays Catherine the Great, desperate to turn Russia into an enlightened nation, while Nicholas Hoult plays Peter III, her libertine husband. Exclusive: Amanda Crew, best known for playing Monica Hall on Silicon Valley, has signed with Buchwald for representation.

Crew can next be seen in Joel David Moore’s independent feature Some Other Woman opposite Tom Felton and Ashley Greene Khoury. Earlier this year, she starred in There’s Something Wrong with the Children from Blumhouse and Epix.

She recently appeared in Ricky Bates’ Tone-Deaf, which premiered in competition at SXSW, and in Daniel Roby’s Gut Instinct with Josh Hartnett and Jim Gaffigan.

Crew’s previous credits include Charlie St. Cloud, The Haunting in Connecticut, and The Age of Adaline.

She serves on the board of directors for Project Heal, a nonprofit that’s working to break down systemic healthcare and financial barriers to eating disorder healing.

Gennaro Sangiuliano is among 24 ministers in the new government of Giorgia Meloni, who was sworn in as Italian prime minister on Sunday, three-and-a-half weeks after her far-right Brothers of Italy party (Fratelli d’Italia) swept to victory in general elections.

Sangiuliano arrives from state broadcaster Rai, where he worked since 2003, rising through the ranks to become editor-in-chief of news programming at Italian state channel Rai 2 in 2018.

Exclusive: Producer Steve Whitney and his company Tsw Films have purchased Suge Knight’s life rights with plans to develop a biopic on the infamous music mogul, bringing Nick Cassavetes and Anthony Thorne aboard to write the script.

The former music exec born Marion Hugh “Suge” Knight Jr. co-founded the iconic label Death Row Records in 1991 and is credited with bringing the subgenre of gangsta rap into the mainstream. Artists signed to the label included Dr. Dre, Snoop Dog and Tupac Shakur—and those three acts alone changed the face of hip hop with the release of the groundbreaking albums The Chronic, Doggystyle and All Eyez on Me. Knight’s label had enormous success with over 50 artists and profits of over $100 million a year, but fell into bankruptcy after the departure of Dr. Dre and Snoop Dog, the murder of Tupac and the 2018 incarceration of Knight on charges of voluntary manslaughter.

The list of new releases on HBO Max this month is highlighted by The Matrix Resurrections on Dec. 22. This is the long-awaited return to the reality-bending saga from The Wachowskis. Writer/director Lana Wachowski returns as do stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss as Neo and Trinity, respectively. This time around it’s 20 years after The Matrix Revolutions and “Neo lives a seemingly ordinary life as Thomas A. Anderson in San Francisco where his therapist prescribes him blue pills. Neither he nor Trinity recognize each other. However, Morpheus offers him the red pill and reopens his mind to the world of the Matrix.”

Though Marvel has decided to consolidate all of its cinematic universe offerings onto Disney+, some outliers still live on for other streaming services. In May 2021, Hulu is set to premiere the latest non-canon Marvel series.

The animated comedy Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. is set to premiere on May 21 and stars Patton Oswalt as the titular Marvel villain. Oswalt’s Modok is every bit the devious floating head that he’s depicted as in the comics. He’s also your every day family man and the show will take on the format of a workplace sitcom. Sounds kinda fun! It’s no wonder that M.O.D.O.K. is the last Hulu Marvel show standing.

Fathom Events to release thriller and companion piece American Boogeywoman in US cinemas.

Voltage Pictures has secured worldwide rights to the thriller American Boogeyman, based on the untold story of the intrepid detective and rookie FBI profiler who pursued serial killer Ted Bundy.

Daniel Farrands wrote and directs the project, which is currently in post and stars Chad Michael Murray, known for his roles in Warner Bros.’ House Of Wax, Lionsgate’s The Haunting In Connecticut 2: Ghosts Of Georgia, and the CW’s Riverdale, as Bundy.

Rounding out the key cast are Genre actress Lin Shaye and Holland Roden.

It still might be a little while before we’re able to go back to the movies again. Thankfully, with its list of new releases for February 2021, Amazon Prime is bringing the theater home. The movies are the real appeal this month.

Amazon’s offerings are highlighted by two original films of note. The first is Bliss, which premieres on Feb. 5. This will star Owen Wilson and Salma Hayek as a couple experiencing some intimacy issues. Presumably this is all just a tune up for when Wilson dons a mustache in Disney+’s Loki later in May. The other film is the sci-fi rom-com The Map of Tiny Perfect Things on Feb. 12.

Other library movies include Antz, Moulin Rouge, The Prestige, The Village, and Dazed and Confused, all of which arrive on Feb. 1. Sonic the Hedgehog is set to arrive later on Feb. 18.

Amazon is premiering only one new original series this month.

Netflix will relocate its Italian team from Amsterdam to Rome within the next year, according to reports in Italian newspaper Il Messaggero today (January 24).

The move is understood to have been prompted by a tax evasion investigation into Netflix by Gaetano Ruta, the vice-district attorney of Milan in 2019. Italian law requires the streaming compamny, and any other Ott operating in the territory, to have an Italian headquarters.

There’s no question Hulu wants to get its viewers in the Halloween mood — the streaming service will add a fresh slate of horror movies to its collection once October hits. In addition to watching Jigsaw psychologically torture victims in “Saw,” “Saw 2” and “Saw 6,” audiences will also be able to see the original Hill House in the 1963 thriller “The Haunting.” For those in the mood for a classic, horror favorites from Alfred Hitchcock will also become available come Oct. 1, including “Rear Window,” “Psycho” and “The Birds.”

Anticipated Hulu Originals will also premiere this coming month. Season 2 of “Light as a Feather” will launch on the streamer on Oct. 4, while “Looking for Alaska,” based on John Green’s best-selling novel of the same name, will premiere on Oct. 18.

A legend in the world of ghosts, on this plane of existence and perhaps the next, has passed on.

Lorraine Warren, purported medium, ghost hunter, and author involved with cases popularized in paranormal pop culture films The Amityville Horror, The Conjuring, The Haunting in Connecticut, and Annabelle, has died at age 92. According to her son-in-law Tony Spera, Warren passed away in her sleep last night.

Lorraine -- along with her husband Ed, who died in 2006 -- founded the New England Society for Psychic Research, and claim to have investigated more than 10,000 paranormal cases. The duo became celebrities who appeared on talk shows, and gave lectures on the topics of ghosts, and demonology.

Lorraine Warren, a noted paranormal investigator and author who, along with her husband Ed, was the subject of James Wan’s The Conjuring films, has died. Warren died “peacefully in her sleep,” Thursday night according to Facebook posts by her grandson Chris McKinnell and The New England Society for Psychic Research.

Warren was a professed clairvoyant and a light trance medium who worked closely with her husband, who together were associated with some of the most prominent cases of hauntings and possessions. Ed Warren died in 2006.

Their cases became the inspiration for blockbuster horror films such The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2, which were based on the Warrens’ real-life events. Set in Rhode Island in 1971, the 2013 film starred Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga, who portrayed Warren, Ron Livingston, Lili Taylor, Mackenzie Foy, and Joey King. Horror genre filmmaker Daniel Farrands has signed with Abrams Artists Agency and will be represented under the Agency’s Literary Department.

Farrands has a multifaceted career as a writer, producer and director both within the genre as well as with high-profile, non-fiction projects about the genre. He partnered with Dimension Films and producer Jason Blum on Amityville: The Awakening and wrote for films such as Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers, The Tooth Fairy, The Girl Next Door and The Haunting in Connecticut.

Farrands was the writer, producer, and director of The Amityville Murders: A Haunting on Long Island (which will be theatrically released by Skyline Entertainment in February 2019) as well as History’s Mysteries Amityville: The Haunting.

In the realm of zaney movie titles, I can appreciate those that are trying to be fun or silly, like 1964’s The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed Up Zombies or even Dude, Where’s My Car? Those are passable because they actually give you an idea of what to expect while perhaps generating a chuckle or a shake of the head. Daniel Farrands, who co-produced 2009 hit The Haunting in Connecticut, is set to direct a new supernatural horror based on the famed Amityville murders.

The Haunting on Long Island: The Amityville Murders will go beyond the story of the Lutz family and the house depicted in The Amityville Horror films, where 13 months earlier one of the strangest and most baffling mass murders of the 20th century occurred — the DeFeo family murders. While the Lutzes escaped from Amityville with their lives, the DeFoes weren't so lucky.

Farrands directs from his own screenplay, with production set to start this summer.

Exclusive: Trio of projects garner praise from industry; dates set for Cannes producer pitching event.

The Cannes Marché has revealed details about the recently finished first edition of the Frontières Finance and Packaging Forum in Amsterdam (Feb 16-18) and the upcoming second session during the Cannes Film Festival (May 17 -28).

The second instalment in the genre pitching and networking event will take place on Saturday May 20 (10am-12pm) when the 12 Forum projects from international producers will have five minutes each to present and screen their proof of concepts to international industry in Palais K.

The event will mark the Marché’s first genre-specific proof of concept screening session.

Other Frontières Platform events in Cannes will include Frontières Goes to Cannes, a screening of footage from four work-in-progress films on Sunday May 21, and networking event Fantastic Fanatics Mixer.

Sherlock and Doctor Who director among filmmakers with projects at Amsterdam forum which is a partnership between the Cannes Marché and Montreal’s Fantasia.

A total of 12 projects will participate in the inaugural Frontières Finance & Packaging Forum, set to take place February 16-18 in Amsterdam.

Initiated as part of the recent partnership between Fantasia International Film Festival and the Cannes Marché du Film, the event is an offshot of the Frontières International Co-Production Market (which takes place at Montreal’s Fantasia festival in July).

The forum will see industry experts assessing the dozen genre projects from a packaging perspective, analysing finance, marketing and distribution strategies.

Among the selected projects is a feature from Sherlock and Doctor Who director Rachel Talalay, House Of Stairs, and works from producers including Jonathan Bronfman (The Witch), Katie Holly (Love And Friendship) and Phyllis Laing (The Haunting In Connecticut).
