We had barely recovered from the festivities of the New Year when Will Smith shocked us with an unwarranted ‘The Matrix’ post.
It sent fans into a spiral, as they tried to come up with reasonable theories as to why “the Matrix would have Will,” so to speak.
Alas, a producer came forward and crushed any dreams we had of the ‘I Am Legend’ star having a Matrix spinoff of his own. But that doesn’t mean he’s done with all things ‘The Matrix.’

Will Smith doesn’t have many regrets in his life, but slapping Chris Rock still ranks high on the list of the few he has. Having a career that spans decades is bound to come with fair share of missed opportunities and regrets.

The biggest career mistake, according to him, though, was passing on the opportunity to play Neo in The Matrix. In a recently released music video, he reflected on that mistake by trying to recreate the movie.
Interestingly, what caught people’s attention was the implication that there is another regret in his life that continues to haunt him. However, they did not explicitly talk about it. So, let’s talk about it.

Bird Box director Susanne Bier is in negations to helm Practical Magic 2, Deadline reports.
Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are set to reprise their roles as witch sisters Sally and Gillian Owens from the 1998 supernatural romantic comedy.
Bier has worked with both actresses in the past: Bullock on Bird Box and Kidman on “The Undoing” and “The Perfect Couple.”
Akiva Goldsman, who co-wrote the original, is returning to pen the script. Bullock and Kidman are producing alongside returning producer Denise Di Novi.
Despite only grossing $68.3 million worldwide against a $75 million budget, Practical Magic has since gained a cult following that Warner Bros. hopes to leverage for the sequel.
Directed by Griffin Dunne, the original film saw two witch sisters, raised by their eccentric aunts in a small town, face closed-minded prejudice and a curse which threatens to prevent them ever finding lasting love.

A successful Will Smith sci-fi movie has appeared on a major streaming chart. Will Smith is a rapper and Oscar-winning actor who first rose to prominence onscreen when he played the title role in the NBC sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, which ran for six seasons between 1990 and 1996. He successfully transitioned into being a major movie star after playing lead roles in the 1995 action-comedy Bad Boys and the 1996 alien invasion movie Independence Day, the latter of which grossed $817.4 million and became the highest-grossing release of the year.
Although subsequent Will Smith movies have taken on a wide variety of genres, he starred in many science fiction movies after the runaway success of Independence Day. His sci-fi output includes the first three movies in the Men in Black franchise, the post-apocalyptic Richard Matheson adaptation I Am Legend, and M. Night Shyamalan's 2013 movie After Earth. The Marvel Cinematic Universe would be a very different place if these directors had been chosen to develop movies for Marvel Studios. The director is one of the most important figures in the development of any movie, but for Marvel Studios, this position is even more crucial. Some of Marvel's directors have become household names as they have helped to produce the most successful film franchise of all time, but many of them weren't Marvel Studios' only choice when planning the McU's projects.
Over the years, Marvel Studios has built strong relationships with brilliant directors, including Jon Favreau, the Russo brothers, James Gunn, Peyton Reed, Ryan Coogler and Destin Daniel Cretton, among others. Had many of these notable directors chosen not to join the MCU, however, Marvel Studios had other options. Nosferatu (2024), directed by Robert Eggers, reimagines the legendary 1922 silent film classic. It brings a fresh yet eerie perspective to the iconic vampire myth. Known for his mastery of atmospheric horror and historical authenticity, Eggers creates a chilling retelling of Count Orlok’s tale. The film captures the same haunting tension and visual storytelling seen in his previous works like The Witch and The Lighthouse. The cinematography, by Dop Jarin Blaschke, echoes the ominous lighting and stark shadows of the original. It adds a unique modern twist. With a mesmerizing performance by Bill Skarsgård as the terrifying vampire, Nosferatu (2024) captures the original’s haunting aura while expanding its thematic depth. If you were drawn to its eerie atmosphere and dark, immortal themes, these 7 classic vampire movies will be a perfect follow-up.

Will Smith may be choosing between the red and blue pill, but the Oscar-winning actor isn’t entering the Matrix for a movie.
Warner Bros. previously announced a fifth “Matrix” installment with “The Martian” screenwriter Drew Goddard attached to write and direct, but knowledgable sources confirmed to Variety that Smith (at least at this point) isn’t involved in the film franchise.
Speculation started on Monday after Smith posted a cryptic message on Instagram, recalling his decision to pass on the starring role of Neo (which eventually went to Keanu Reeves) in Lana or Lilly Wachowski’s seminal 1999 sci-fi epic “The Matrix.”
“In 1997, the Wachowskis offered Will Smith the role of Neo in ‘The Matrix.’ Smith turned it down,” his Instagram video, written in third-person, reads. “He chose ‘Wild Wild West,’ believing it was a better fit for him at the time. But the question remains: What would ‘The Matrix...

As he continues to find success with one of his ongoing movie series, a Will Smith franchise is finding renewed success on streaming. Since his breakout turn with The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Smith has found widespread success both as a blockbuster actor and a prestige actor. This, in turn, has netted him four Oscar nominations and one win for Best Actor for King Richard, as well as seven Golden Globe nominations and one win for Best Actor for the same Venus and Serena Williams biopic.
When it comes to his blockbuster productions, Smith has been the face of both a variety of one-off titles and major franchises. Some of the more notable include Roland Emmerich's Independence Day, which helped cement him as a major box office name, 2004's I, Robot and 2007's I Am Legend adaptation. Over the course of cinematic history, there have been some truly awful plot twists in the science fiction genre, with some so egregious that they can actually tank the entire movie. When utilized correctly, a plot twist can elevate a story in incredible ways, but when it is bad or out of place, it typically makes the film worse in a number of ways. Science fiction in particular can be tricky to nail, but some of the best sci-fi plot twists are amazing, recontextualizing everything about the story.
Films like The Terminator, Stars Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, and Planet of the Apes have some of the best plot twists of all time, helping solidify their place in pop culture history. Still, not every single twist can land, and despite having some incredible twists within the science fiction genre, there are just as many bad ones, with some being even worse than others.

Last week, we got not one but two episodes of Earth Abides, and they were all about Charlie. As described by Ish, Charlie was a predator who went from one community of survivors to another, sucking the life out of them just to assert his dominance. He targeted San Lupo under the guise of helping Ish and his family with getting access to groundwater. Everyone was really charmed by him, with the exception of Ish, and the latter’s worst fears came true when Charlie sexually assaulted Evie. After a lot of discussion, Ish raised his trusty hammer and caved Charlie’s head in. The following day, Charlie’s group was given the option of staying in San Lupo as per Ish’s rules or leaving. Silas was kicked out while the rest stayed back. Three years after the incident, “The Illness” made a return, and everyone other than Ish,...

Akiva Goldsman has had many highs and many lows in his Hollywood screenwriting career. The scribe won an Academy Award in 2001 for writing "A Beautiful Mind," but he had previously been nominated for Razzies (honoring the worst in filmmaking) for writing the screenplays to "A Time to Kill" and the atrocious "Batman & Robin." He's been deeply involved in major blockbusters and media franchises, writing "The Da Vinci Code," 1998's "Lost in Space," and "The Divergent Series: Insurgent." He also penned "I, Robot," "I Am Legend," and most recently, "The Dark Tower."
Since 2017, Goldsman has fallen in with the head honchos at "Star Trek," serving as one of the franchise's executive producers and writing multiple episodes of "Star Trek: Discovery," "Star Trek: Picard," and "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds." He has also directed five episodes, embracing his new place atop the "Trek" heap. Goldsman is also working on other projects...

2005’s Constantine, starring Keanu Reeves, lands on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK in February 2025. More here.
We’ve known for a little while now that Warner Bros had intended to mark the 20th birthday of the Constantine movie with a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray debut for the film at some point in 2025. Now we have the confirmation of just when to expect it.
The studio has inked in a release of 17th February 2025 for the 4K disc. You can find the listing for it and order yourself a copy right here.
It looks like we’re going to get two discs in the box, although we’ve not got absolute confirmation of that. We’re hearing, but don’t hold us to it, that it’s going to be a 4K disc, and a Blu-ray that primarily brings across previous extra features.

"The Twilight Zone" episode "Little Girl Lost" follows two suburban parents, Chris (Robert Sampson) and Ruth Miller (Sarah Robertson), who hear their young daughter Tina crying out in fear. When they go to her room, she's not there. With the help of physicist friend Bill (Charles Aidman), they discover a portal to the fourth dimension has opened in Tina's room and she's fallen through it. "Little Girl Lost" is the original "Coraline": a story about a young girl who crawls through a tunnel to a parallel dimension.
The episode mostly consists of the three adults standing huddled around Tina's room, calling to the invisible girl. When the fourth dimension is finally seen, it's rendered as an ethereal, fog-filled realm — the budget and constraints of '60s TV special effects wouldn't have permitted anything else.

Village Roadshow is late on payments to those writers working on their film and TV projects, we hear. As such the Wgaw is bound to issue a stop work order to The Matrix franchise and Mad Max Fury Road co-financier and production company.
“Village Roadshow is late on paying its writers and a stop work order is imminent if they do not do what’s necessary,” said a Wgaw spokesperson to Deadline this morning.
As seismic as that might seem, and the real pain some scribes are feeling this holiday season, it’s a temporary situation for Village Roadshow we hear as the label gets its house of cards in order to pay the people who’ve done the work already
What’s wrong? We understand the problem is with Village Roadshow’s majority stakeholder, Vine Alternative Investments, the specialized asset manager of $1.3 billion investments, who we’re told is having cash problems.

Beyond Fest has announced something that should make fans of 1999’s tragically under-appreciated film Stir of Echoes very happy. There will be a special 25th anniversary screening of the film in Hollywood on Saturday, December 15.

Horror has been one of the most consistent money makers for Hollywood pretty much ever since movies became a popular form of entertainment for the masses. Even dating back to the days of "Nosferatu" and the early Universal Monsters films, it's a genre that delivers consistently yet, very frequently, gets very little respect. Even so, studios will continue going back to this well because when a horror movie breaks through with audiences, it can mean big money.
There have been plenty of blockbuster horror movies throughout history, from director William Friedkin's Oscar-winning, groundbreaking "The Exorcist" to more recent success stories like "Alien: Romulus." It's a never ending well that can be tapped over and over again when all else fails. But there is one that stands tall above the rest to hold the distinction as the highest-grossing horror movie in the history of the box office.

When you think of movies with alternate endings, we'd imagine the likes of Blade Runner and I Am Legend immediately come to mind.
While studios do occasionally test contrasting endings, that's rare, and it obviously helps any movie to have a definitive conclusion set in stone when cameras start rolling. For each of the Marvel and DC Comics adaptations listed here, however, things once looked vastly different to what we eventually saw in theaters.
Whether it's studio interference, last-minute reshoots, or scrapped plans for future stories, each of these blockbusters came close to wrapping up on a-now unrecognisable note.
Would they have been better or worse? We'll leave you to decide, but you can check these out by tapping the "Next"/"View List" buttons below.
8. Suicide Squad - Joker vs. Task Force X
Neither filmmaker David Ayer nor many Dceu fans will stop harping on about the "Ayer Cut" of 2016's Suicide Squad.

While Will Smith leads the King Richard cast in his Oscar-winning role, there is a terrific ensemble working together to bring this true sports story to the big screen. Venus and Serena Williams’ names are iconic in the world of sports, but King Richard offers a slight twist in that it’s actually more about their father, Richard Williams, a tennis coach who tries to put his daughters’ talents on the world stage. While he is a complex and intriguing character, King Richard benefits from the entire cast.
Directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green from a screenplay by Zach Baylin, King Richard goes behind the scenes of Venus and Serena’s life under the guidance of their father. King Richard has a sprawling cast of veteran actors and younger actors who get to flex their talents in front of a wider audience. The film is based on real-life people, and here...

Science fiction movies, at their core, explore realities and futures where the possibilities are endless. In these films, technology knows no bounds, extraterrestrial life is a common occurrence, and space is explored to its farthest corners. The genre hasn't wavered in popularity since its formation in the early 20th century. Today, science fiction remains one of the most dominating topics in cinema. Many sci-fi movies will be released in 2025, including the long-awaited A Quiet Place Part III, which will continue John Krasinski's epic alien franchise.
Many sci-fi films imagine optimistic futures, in which the circumstances of life are made better by the rapid evolution of technology. On the other hand, some projects depict realities that have been plagued by dreadful forces of nature. Even though they might be disheartening to watch, bleak sci-fi films demonstrate the worst of possibilities, portraying fictional scenarios that are downright torturous.

Earlier this year, an adaptation of the Stephen King novel The Long Walk (which was, like The Running Man and Thinner, published under the pen name Richard Bachman) went into production, with director Francis Lawrence, whose previous credits include Constantine, I Am Legend, Water for Elephants, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Parts 1 and 2, Red Sparrow, Slumberland, and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, at the helm. Now, cast member Judy Greer (the Halloween and Ant-Man franchises) has said that the film Lawrence has made out of King’s story is beautiful and dark.

There is a long history in theater of the "one man show," in which a single performer must hold the attention of the audience for the entire runtime. Sometimes they play more than one character, sometimes they play just one character, but they are always the focus. Over the years, cinema has created its own version of the one man show, where only one actor appears onscreen for the majority of the runtime. Occasionally we might hear someone offscreen or in voiceover or get a quick flashback with other actors, but for the vast majority of the movie, we're stuck looking at just one face. That takes some serious skill to pull off, no matter how good-looking the face might be.

If we’re putting Alfred Hitchcock, who was a genius in every aspect and one of the best and most important filmmakers of all time, aside, the first major horror director who influenced the genre in a major way was the legendary George A. Romero, whose 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead is still considered to be a classic of cinema in general.
This low-budget indie horror became exceptionally influential, with many later horror directors, such as John Carpenter or Wes Craven, being influenced by Romero and his work. And while the legendary director passed away in 2017 after battling cancer, it seems that he is coming back from the grave – which is most fitting, seeing how his specialty was zombie films – to give us one last movie.

From creeping dread to heart-stopping jump scares, the horror genre is immensely popular and constantly evolving, and one of its biggest appeals is its versatility with underappracited subgenres. However, the most well-known horror movie genres tend to dominate the horror world. There are countless demonic or ghostly tales of terror, slasher movies, and stereotypical horror movie characters. However, there are many more ways to scare people while still telling a good story. Horror has countless obscure and underrated horror subgenres, giving audiences new settings, twists, and scares.
Some of the more obscure horror movie subgenres are inventive and surprising. Some, like art horror, prioritize stunning visuals while the plot keeps audiences guessing. The most creative horror movies may have an unexpected villain, like the eco-horror subgenre, or mix horror themes with other genres, like Westerns. Even if a horror movie subgenre is less well-known, it does not mean that filmmakers have overlooked it,...

Batman & Robin director Joel Schumacher's conception of the fourth entry in the Batman franchise looked very different, and it would have reshaped the DC Universe. Instead of Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy and Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze, the filmmaker sought Nicolas Cage to play Dr. Jonathan Crane/Scarecrow. The sequel would have been called Batman Unchained, and its script was penned by Mark Protosevich, who wrote I Am Legend and Thor. In addition to Scarecrow, Batman Unchained would have adapted Harley Quinn for the big screen, this time reimagined as the Joker's daughter who wanted revenge for his death.

Resident Evil star Milla Jovovich is preparing to battle the undead once again as Deadline reports that she’s set to star in Twilight of the Dead, which is being billed as the seventh and final installment of George A. Romero’s iconic zombie franchise. Betty Gabriel (Get Out) will also star in the movie, which is set to be directed by Brad Anderson (Session 9).
Twilight of the Dead is set on a tropical island and will “delve into the dark nature of humanity from the perspective of the last humans on earth who are caught between factions of the undead.” Romero had been working on the project before he died in 2017, and his wife, Suzanne Desrocher-Romero, made sure it would live on. Greg Nicotero, who got his star on Romero’s Day of the Dead, will create the makeup effects, so the undead are in very good hands. The George A.

As one of Hollywoods most bankable stars, its no surprise that Will Smith has returned for several sequels to some of his most popular films. While classics like I Am Legend and I, Robot are still crying out for follow-up films from Smith, other series like Bad Boys and Men in Black have been turned into their own popular franchises. Its not just Smiths biggest films that have received sequels either, as hes also taken the time to appear in cameo roles in everything from Hindi-language Bollywood features to comedy classic sequels like Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues.

The bungling of Trick ‘r Treat by Warner Bros. — shelving it after well-received festival screenings before unceremoniously dumping it straight to DVD in 2009 — is well-documented, but had it received a traditional theatrical release and underperformed, there’s a chance it may have never entered the cultural zeitgeist. Instead, its authentic cult roots allowed it to blossom into the contemporary classic we celebrate today.
Trick ‘r Treat stands alongside the opening credits of Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers as a felicitous distillation of the Halloween atmosphere on celluloid. Sam, the impish demon played by 7-year-old Quinn Lord that serves as the film’s mascot, personifies the tricks and treats of Halloween while serving as the connective tissue between segments.

With I Am Legend 2 discarding the theatrical ending of I Am Legend in favor of an alternate ending, it could help improve some of Will Smith's other sci-fi adaptations at the same time. Smith is a huge action star, but his track record in sci-fi movies has been spotty, as the movies often drastically change the source material they are based on. With I Am Legend, the original novel was based on a book by Richard Matheson that told a very different story to the movie.
Instead of a nuanced story about vampires, and analyzing how sometimes the monster in a story is more about the perspective than the outward appearance, the movie was a straightforward dystopian sci-fi with monsters. But Smith also starred in I, Robot, which was an even bigger departure from the source material by Isaac Asimov. Despite these movies and their clear changes, the...

Will Smith and Steven Spielberg were on a similar wavelength in the 2000s. After he finished licking his wounds from 1999's "Wild Wild West," Big Willie was hungry to prove his mettle as a dramatic actor. Adapting a bit of a one-for-them-one-for-me mentality, Smith earned his first two acting Oscar nods for "Ali" and "The Pursuit of Happyness" in-between nodding his head as Agent J and tearing up the streets of Miami again as Mike Lowrey. Even his tentpoles started to get a little darker and heavier along the way, with the actor anchoring a big screen rendition of Richard Matheson's end-times sci-fi horror tale "I Am Legend" and playing a hard-edged, heavy-drinking superhero in "Hancock."
Spielberg, meanwhile, spent the first decade of the 21st century redefining his work. Really, there was very little he didn't try his hand at during this period, from crafting disquieting, noirish visions of...

Will Smith was once known as one of Hollywood’s biggest blockbuster action stars. The actor was well aware of his standing in the genre. At the same time, he was very much concerned about aging out of those kinds of roles.

Smith’s path to movie stardom initially began with action movies. As an actor, he was steadily building his portfolio back in the 90s in works like Six Degrees of Separation and Fresh Prince of Belair. But Bad Boys was the start of Smith becoming the blockbuster star he’d later become. It was something he owed to filmmaker Michael Bay for insisting that he run around shirtless in the movie for this now iconic scene.
