The trailer for The Gorge, Scott Derrickson’s latest genre-bending film, doesn’t really tell the whole story. It shows Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy’s characters, highly skilled mercenaries, assigned to watch over the titular gorge, where something spooky lurks. Naturally, the two fall in love and the trailer sells The Gorge as a strange action-romance hybrid, but the reality is much more complex.

Derrickson is best known for his work in the horror genre with films like The Exorcism Of Emily Rose, Sinister and The Black Phone, the latter receiving a sequel later this year. While the aforementioned promo for The Gorge doesn’t exactly market the film as a horror, it quickly becomes one, and a good one, too.

Robert Cargill have signed a first-look agreement with Sony, specifically their genre-focused division Screen Gems, reports Deadline.

What are the chances that two films called The Piper, both horror films involving the legend of The Pied Piper, would come out in the same year? And that both would be hard to see? While I haven’t seen the one starring Liz Hurley yet, I did get a chance to see the one written and directed by Erlingur Thoroddsen and featuring the late Julian Sands in one of his last roles.

It opens with the voice of Gustafson (Sands) on the phone trying to talk Katherine out of destroying the last copy of her Concerto for Children. She tells him “It is evil, no one must ever know about it” before rushing outside to try and burn it in her fire pit. But something with glowing eyes intervenes, and she burns while the manuscript survives.

Some PG-13 horror movies contain content that arguably deserves an R rating, such as The Sixth Sense and The Ring, which feature disturbing imagery and mature themes. The intensity of movies like A Quiet Place and Drag Me to Hell, despite their lack of graphic imagery, suggests they should have been rated higher due to their adult themes and distressing conclusions. Surprisingly, even iconic horror films like Jaws, with its gruesome death scenes, and The Last Exorcism, with its chilling performances, managed to receive a PG-13 rating despite pushing the boundaries of the genre.

There are a surprising amount of horror movies based on true stories that have elevated the genre and showcased the deepest annals of human depravity, but there are also a fair few whose true stories are scarier than the actual movie. When a film is adapted from a true story it adds a different layer to the overall narrative, usually sending audiences directly to the internet after viewing to see how the two tales compare. With “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” exceeding all expectations over Easter weekend, it’s likely to be the #1 movie this weekend and maybe one or two more after that. Undaunted, four studios studios are releasing movies that will try to bring in business despite the overwhelming success and popularity of Universal’s animated movie.

In fact, Universal will be making a play for the top two spots this weekend with its latest horror-comedy “Renfield,” which comes from “The Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman‘s Skybound Entertainment with Chris McKay (“The Lego Batman Movie”) at the helm. It stars Nicholas Hoult (“The Favourite”) as the title character, henchman to the legendary vampire Count Dracula, as played by Nicolas Cage. Akwafina, Ben Schwartz and Oscar nominee Shohreh Aghdashloo all have key roles, as well.

Before 2012, you’d be forgiven if you didn’t think it was possible for filmmaker Scott Derrickson to become a master of the horror genre. He’d had three directorial credits to his name up until that point: the forgettable Hellraiser sequel, Inferno, the mediocre horror-courtroom drama The Exorcism of Emily Rose, and the unfortunate The Day the Earth Stood Still remake. While surely a competent director, it’s safe to say no one was necessarily clamoring for the next Scott Derrickson feature. That all changed in October of 2012 with the release of Sinister, a genuinely disturbing low-budget horror effort that remains one of the creepiest movies within the genre over the last ten years.

After directing Deliver Us From Evil, and a little Marvel movie called Doctor Strange, Derrickson returned to the shadows with The Black Phone, based on a short story by Joe Hill and starring newcomer Mason Thames.

In Prey For The Devil, Sister Ann tries to help a girl who has been taken over by an evil demon. Since this movie is a new take on demonic possession, it would be perfect to watch with 2005's The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Horror fans love movie marathons and it's fun to pick out which films work well together because they share the same subject matter but have different settings and approaches.

Director Scott Derrickson is known for jumping around different genre sandboxes. His work ranges from science fiction ("The Day the Earth Stood Still") to Marvel superheroes ("Doctor Strange"), but arguably his most effective films are those that exist within the horror sphere. Filmmaker Scott Derrickson can seemingly track his reputation as a director by what projects he was offered following any one of his movies. After writing the modest 2000 horror sequel "Urban Legends: Final Cut," Derrickson had an opportunity to write and direct the newest installment in a popular film series. Sadly, "Hellraiser: Inferno" went straight to video and was not terribly well-received by "Hellraiser" fans. In 2004, Derrickson garnered a story-by credit on Wim Wenders' post-9/11 drama "Land of Plenty," which, in terms of genre, was quite the gearshift. "Landy of Plenty" never emerged as an arthouse darling and the director moved back to horror to make "The Exorcism of Emily Rose." On a budget if 19 million, that film made 145 million worldwide in 2005.

Shudder & Studio71’s Cinepocalypse & Bloody Disgusting-produced V/H/S/99 isn’t even out yet and we’re already rewinding all the way back to the 1980s with V/H/S/85!

The news was announced out of the New York Comic Con where Shudder is putting our V/H/S/99 on display ahead of the October 20th release date.

Directors are already locked for V/H/S/85 and filming is currently underway for release in 2023.

Here’s who we lined up:

The only legacy filmmaker is David Bruckner, who will be spearheading the latest entry. Bruckner directed the “Amateur Night” segment of the first V/H/S which featured the breakout performance of Hannah Fierman as a succubus. Bruckner, who also directed Searchlight’s The Night House, just celebrated the release of his Hellraiser reimaging. We’ve been huge fans of Bruckner since he co-directed The Signal and also absolutely love his Netflix creature feature The Ritual.

Spooky Season is in session on Hulu, as the streaming service is adding a ton of horror-themed content this month. But not to worry, there’s plenty of other non-spooky new movies and shows to watch, too.

In the horror realm, director David Bruckner’s new (and well-received) take on “Hellraiser” arrives on Oct. 7, while horror films ranging from “Annabelle: Creation” to “The ABCs of Death” to “Monster House” to “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” arrive throughout the month.

In decidedly non-scary new arrivals, the entire series of “Schitt’s Creek” comes to Hulu on Oct. 3 after streaming on Netflix for the last few years, while the Hulu original film “Rosaline” – which tells the “Romeo and Juliet” story from a different point of view – streams on Oct. 14.

Other noteworthy library titles include Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch” on Oct. 25 and David Cronenberg’s “Crimes of the Future” on Oct. 31.

When the name of your streaming service so neatly fits into the word “Halloween,” you have a moral imperative to bring the goods come spooky season. Thankfully Hulu is abiding by that obligation with its list of new releases for October 2022.

Halloween…or rather Huluween is set to be a big deal for the streamer. This month sees a bevy of horror offerings. On the TV side of things, the series adaptation of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser premieres on Oct. 7. That will be accompanied by two animated specials from Solar Opposites co-creator Justin Roiland. The first is A Sinister Halloween Scary Opposites Solar Special on Oct. 3, which is followed by The Paloni Show! Halloween Special! on Oct. 17.

Hulu’s original movies are decidedly spooky-centric this month as well. The horror meme movie Grimcutty premieres on Oct. 10 and will be followed by Matriarch on Oct. 21. Of course, many of the library...

Miles Teller has signed on to star in and executive produce “The Gorge” for “The Black Phone” director Scott Derrickson.

The film, which has been described as a high-action, genre-bending love story, will see the “Top Gun: Maverick” star reteam with one of the blockbuster’s producers, Skydance Media.

Derrickson is coming off of the smash success of “The Black Phone,” which has raked in over 155 million at the global box office. He will direct from a spec script penned by “The Tomorrow War” writer Zach Dean.

Details as to the film’s plot are being kept under wraps. But filmmaker Scott Derrickson, screenwriter C. Robert Cargill and Sherryl Clark are on board to produce for Crooked Highway. News of the trio’s latest project follows the release of their hit horror feature The Black Phone, which Derrickson directed from his and Cargill’s script, which was itself based on the short story of the same name penned by Joe Hill. The project also marks a return to Screen Gems for Derrickson, who previously directed the films The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Deliver Us from Evil for the studio. Now, as we enter the dog days, Prime Video is set to keep the warm weather good times rolling with a new twist on an old classic. That’s right, Amazon’s list of new releases for August 2022 is highlighted by some good old-fashioned baseball.

A League of Their Own, the TV adaptation of Penny Marshall’s 1992 movie, is set to premiere on Aug. 12. Like the movie before it, the series will dramatize the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League which saw women playing America’s pastime while the major leagues were on pause for World War II. Abbi Jacobson (Broad City) co-created the show and will star as catcher Carson Shaw.

Amazon’s series version of “A League of Their Own” will debut its eight-episode first season on Aug. 12, introducing new characters and stories set in the historical opening of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League (Aagpbl).

Ron Howard’s “Thirteen Lives” tells the real-life story of how a young boys’ soccer team was rescued from the Thai mountain cave where they got stuck for 10 days along with their coach.

Other new film arrivals include hits from earlier this summer, “The Lost City” starring Sandra Bullock, Daniel Radcliffe, Channing Tatum and Brad Pitt, as well as “Sonic the Hedgehog 2.” Academy Award-nominated film “Licorice Pizza” also arrives on Prime Video this month.

When TheWrap recently spoke with producer Jason Blum, he explained that Scott Derrickson’s “The Black Phone” would be something of a test for whether original horror films are still viable at the box office.
