The opening of Whiteout creates disorientation, mirroring the chaos the protagonist experiences. Derek Barnes tells the story with minimal background information, making the audience share Henry’s confusion. This approach matches survival’s unpredictable nature, as the plot develops parallel to the severe wilderness setting.
The story alternates intense action scenes—like the labor camp escape—with quiet, contemplative sequences where characters fight against the icy environment. Similar to Godard’s films, the calm moments build tension. Barnes grounds this experimental style through realistic survival elements, keeping viewers connected to Henry’s ordeals.
The final section shifts toward psychological horror. Fear and distrust spread among the escapees, building suspense and terror, showing how desperate humans behave unpredictably. The changed tone serves the story’s main idea: surviving requires both physical stamina and mental strength.
A Journey from Captivity to Chaos
Whiteout starts with a sudden drop into its stark premise.

Kate Beckinsale's 2024 spy movie is a streaming success despite its 30% Rotten Tomatoes audience score. The English actress made her feature film debut in 1993 with a brief role in Kenneth Branagh's Much Ado About Nothing and, during the remainder of the 1990s, continued to star in British costume dramas such as Prince of Jutland, Cold Comfort Farm, Emma, and The Golden Bowl. "The wilderness is our prison now..." Saban Films has revealed the official trailer for Whiteout, an intense survival thriller film from Canada. The film premiered under the original title Walking Supply instead, showing at one film festival in late 2023, now set for a November release this fall. That original title is a bit clunky and strange, though Whiteout is also too generic and doesn't tease anything about this story at all. This the thrilling survival story of three men who escape from a Russian labor camp and must overcome the treacherous wilderness & each other as their journey turns into a brutal fight for survival. Directed by Derek Barnes who states: "As a stuntman turned filmmaker, Walking Supply is a dream come true. From dangling off cliffs to falling into frozen lakes, climbing up mountains and smashing trucks through gates – this is the type of high-octane, independent, venturous project that I’ve always wanted to tackle.

The 2000s saw the action genre in a state of flux. The Matrix revolutionized everything at the end of the previous decade, The Bourne Supremacy would make shaky cameras standard practice in 2004, and the MCU would take flight with Iron Man in 2008. At the same time, Michael Bay reached his ultimate form with Bad Boys II, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Kill Bill made kung fu classy, and Oldboy changed the way we look at hallways.
Within those changes came a host of greats that didn’t get the same attention. Some of these movies represent the first steps in the development of those who would define the genre, such as Scott Adkins and Gareth Evans. Some find stars at the height of the powers, such as Donny Yen and Michael Jai White. And some are just cool, because that’s really all an action movie needs.

Documentary fans have a lot to be excited about this month on HBO and Max. April begins with the premiere of The Synanon Fix, a docuseries that follows the rise and fall of the cult-like drug rehabilitation program Synanon. The documentary Brandy Hellville and the Cult of Fast Fashion takes a deep-dive into the controversial “one size fits most” clothing brand Brandy Mellville and the impact of fast fashion on the planet.
An American Bombing: The Road to April 19th looks at the surge of political violence and anti-government sentiment that led to the 1995 Oklahoma City Bombing, and the effects still felt nearly 30 years later. HBO is also returning with a second part to their popular docuseries The Jinx, with filmmakers continuing their investigation of Robert Durst.
But if documentaries aren’t your thing, there’s still plenty of popular films hitting Max in April, like Scott Pilgrim vs. The World,...

If Heart of Stone has any distinctive visual moments, they all involve a supercomputer called the Heart. The Heart appears in the form of holographic images surrounding operator the Jack of Hearts (Matthias Schweighöfer), who moves around digital objects and zooms in on key details by waving his hands and touching objects. Yes, we’ve seen many similar depictions of supercomputers ever since Tom Cruise stared intensely at future crimes in 2002’s Minority Report and Tony Stark threw hot rod red on his suit in 2008’s Iron Man. Heck, we’ve seen Jeff Goldblum wave his shockingly large hands around cg-landscapes in apartment commercials.
To his credit though, director Tom Harper doesn’t treat the visuals as anything groundbreaking or particularly exciting. It’s just shorthand for superspy technology. In fact, everything in Heart of Stone is superspy shorthand—a recitation of ideas and characters that we’ve seen time and again.

Summer isn’t over yet but HBO and its streaming arm Max are already moving on to fall. With its list of new releases for August 2023, Max is focusing on football! The American kind, mind you, not the actually footy kind.
August 2023 sees the release of two major football documentaries on HBO and Max. The first is the premiere of Hard Knocks on Aug. 10. The new season of long-running NFL training camp docuseries will center on the New York Jets, new employers of legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers. On Aug. 23, Max will air the aptly named Bs High. The doc tells the stranger-than-fiction story of high school football team Bishop Sycamore, which pulled off one of the more notable sports scams you’re likely to ever hear about.
Not of the football variety but in keeping with the North American sports theme will be season 2 of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty on Aug.

Disney's 90s hero, Darkwing Duck, will soon share the comic spotlight with his nemesis: Negaduck. This Fall, Dynamite comics will add Negaduck to its Disney comic offerings. This series will focus on Darkwing's evil alter ego, who debuted in the animated series, but also appeared in the 2017 show DuckTales, with a new origin.
Darkwing Duck's evil alter ego has two origins within the original series, with one being a split version of the hero resulting from an invention made by the villain, Megavolt. The other states Negaduck came from the Negaverse, a parallel universe. Since the Darkwing Duck comic has largely seemed to draw its inspiration from the original series, it's likely Negaduck will similarly follow his classic appearances over his more recent DuckTales iteration.

To mark the digital release of Fukushima 50 – out 8th March from Altitude Films – we’re giving away a voucher code to three winners.
Ten years ago the world looked on as Japan battled to avert a potentially world-changing catastrophe – when, following an earthquake and tsunami, a nuclear reactor started to leak. Hot on the heels of 2019’s acclaimed Chernobyl, comes another recreation of a truly chilling moment in history, when the fate of mankind seemed to hang in the balance – or rather, in the hands of the workers at the Japanese power plant, who became known as the ‘Fukushima 50’.
Based on the extraordinary, jaw-dropping book by Ryusho Kadota, On the Brink: The Inside Story of Fukushima Daiichi, the film, directed by Setsurô Wakamatsu (Whiteout), is the rival of any Hollywood disaster epic, but at its heart it is a moving and extremely timely human drama about people pulling together in a time of unprecedented crisis.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars and filmmakers and not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between.
Today, Conor and I dish on our movie crushes. More specifically, the movie crush from my life as a young cinephile: Kate Beckinsale.
The B-Sides in the pipeline are: Laurel Canyon, Tiptoes, Nothing but the Truth, Whiteout, and Everybody’s Fine.
The sheer diversity of these five pictures cannot be overstated. Beckinsale, while known by most Americans for her role in the Underworld franchise, comes from a comedy lineage in the U.K., the daughter of sitcom legend Richard Beckinsale. Soon enough, period pieces like Much Ado About Nothing gave way to Hollywood dramas like Brokedown Palace and indie spotlights like The Last Days of Disco for Kate Beckinsale. And then… Pearl Harbor!

GLAAD Award-winning comic book writer Greg Rucka has a new Netflix movie on the way in July. The Wonder Woman scribe has adapted his own series, The Old Guard, for Skydance and the streaming service, and Gina Prince-Blythewood (Marvel‘s Cloak & Dagger) has directed the project.
Teased by the tagline “forever is harder than it looks”, The Old Guard follows a group of soldiers who are led by Charlize Theron‘s Andy. The pack are immortal mercenaries who have seen a lot of shit over the centuries, and now they’re pretty bored with life in general. Things start to get interesting again when they discover that a new immortal is serving in the Us Marines, but when their undying existence is captured on camera by a murky organization, events start to spiral out of control.
Theron stars alongside Chiwetel Ejiofor, Marwan Kenzari, Kiki Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Luca Marinelli,...

"Excuse me, sir? Are you okay?" In addition to Sam Mendes' long-take 1917 movie coming up this fall, we have another thrilling one-long-take film to watch right now. Whiteout is an 10-minute short film directed by up-and-coming filmmaker Lance Edmands, and it's a single-take drama set on a snowy road. When a young couple encounters a strange old man wandering in a snowstorm, they must decide if he needs help, or if he has more sinister intentions. Starring David Call and Sarah Tihany, with Patrick M. Walsh. It's a seriously suspenseful thriller that will turn your stomach. Edmands states that is intentions are to ask tough questions: "But what happens when we let our fear overwhelm our empathy?" It's a very provocative short that makes you confront your own feelings in a situation like this, a bit like Ruben Östlund's Force Majeure. Thanks to Short of the Week for debuting this.

The next Die Hard sequel that has been in development since 2015 is moving forward with two new screenwriters. The studio has hired Chad and Carey Hayes to rewrite the script for Die Hard 6. They have written the scripts for both of The Conjuring films that were directed by James Wan.
Len Wiseman (Live Free or Die Hard) is still set to produce and direct the sequel, which is said to be both a prequel and a sequel. The film will be set in 1979, when McClane was fighting crime as a New York City cop. It will show how he "became a die hard kind of guy." Bruce Willis will reprise his role in the film, but in the later part of the story which will take place in the present. The movie is expected to jump back and forth between the past and the present.

Bruce Willis is also set to appear in flashback scenes alongside the heart of the story. Much has been written about just how dismal this year’s summer movies have been, but one of the silver linings in such a poor season has remarkably been indies. Where blockbusters like “The Legend Of Tarzan,” “Warcraft” and “X-Men: Apocalypse” failed, indies such as “The Lobster,” “Cafe Society” and “Love and Friendship” succeeded. And while studios were certainly rolling in cash when it came to “Suicide Squad” and “The Secret Life Of Pets,” critics weren’t exactly impressed. It was a rough season for studio films, but it won’t be a total waste if executives can learn from their mistakes and start course correcting. Below, we look towards the indie world in order to offer up the biggest lessons for studio films.

The film is being produced by Peter Safran whose credits include some pretty stellar thrillers like Buried and the upcoming Martyrs remake.
The Crucifixion sounds intriguing in its story. Rather than a straight forward story of exorcism, it seems to revolve around a journalist and a priest who is facing murder charges in the wake of an exorcism gone wrong.
We've got the first look at the film including some stunning photography as well as a test shot of a terrifying figure that's being refereed to on set as the "Faceless man".

On Thursday (January 29), Pivot premieres the intriguing new Arctic Circle mystery "Fortitude." Now you have the better part of the day to figure out where Pivot is hiding on your TV dial. "Fortitude" is set in a chilly and alien world in which both the characters and the ice hide secrets. Featuring a strong cast led by Richard Dormer, Stanley Tucci, Michael Gambon, Christopher Eccleston, Jessica Raine and Sienna Guillory, "Fortitude" was created by scribe Simon Donald, whose credits include the original incarnation of "Low Winter Sun." At TCA Press Tour earlier this month, Donald and I sat down over a couple pints and discussed "Fortitude," starting with its brutal opening scene. We talked about the decision not to have Tucci do a Scottish accent, the drama's environmental message and the hints at horror or supernatural elements. It's a good conversation about a good show. Check out the Q&A.

Chicago – Along with your local library’s DVD section and equality, Antarctica remains one of the general world’s greatest oversights, even though it’s the size of a continent (because it is one). Around this time of year, the North Pole gets a huge shoutout for its mass production of brand items, but it’s the South Pole that forever remains in the shadow of everything else in the world, only mentioned in films like Werner Herzog’s 2007 documentary “Encounters at the End of the World,” or that 2009 Kate Beckinsale snow thriller “Whiteout.”
Rating: 4.0/5.0
As it turns out from Herzog’s doc and now first-timer Anthony Powell, there is more to Antarctica than a giant rock of frozen water. And where Herzog’s (highly recommended) documentary comes solely from his viewpoint as definitively curious outsider, this week’s release “Antarctica: A Year On Ice” by Powell presents the continent from an insider’s perspective.

New Line Cinema has hired "The Conjuring" scribes Chad and Carey Hayes to pen a third and fourth film in its 3D "Journey" franchise.
Starting in 2008 with "Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D," the film scored a sequel in 2012 with "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" which saw Dwayne Johnson take over for Brendan Fraser as the adult male lead. Johnson is expected to return for both the new sequels.
The Hayes became known for penning numerous films for Dark Castle including "House of Wax," "The Reaping" and "Whiteout" before hitting it big with "The Conjuring". They're returning to pen that film's upcoming sequel, and also wrote Johnson's in production earthquake disaster thriller "San Andreas".
The Hayes will take over for previously attached screenwriters Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn, and are expected to "take the project in a different direction than what had been in development before."

Fifteen years ago, Greg Rucka bursted onto the comic book scene with his Eisner Award winning series, ‘Whiteout.’ Fast forward fifteen years later and Rucka is one of the most recognizable names in comics. He has worked for all of the major comic book labels, tackling some of the most popular superheroes including Superman, Wolverine, and Wonder Woman. Most readers will know Rucka from his work on the Eisner nominated series ‘Gotham Central’ which explored the lives and adventures of the Gotham City Police Department.
Rucka recently has turned his attention to creator owned projects. He successfully funded a print version of his web comic, ‘Lady Sabre,’ on the popular crowd funding site Kickstarter. He is also working on his popular ongoing series ‘Lazarus’ through Image Comics.

No, The Disappointments Room is not the storage locker where Kate Beckinsale keeps the various drafts of the Whiteout screenplay. It’s actually a new supernatural thriller script she’s been offered and that I Am Number Four’s D.J. Caruso is down to direct. The Disappointments Room would see Beckinsale as a mother who moves her family to a storied mansion in the country. While it has plenty of land and lovely architecture, she discovers it also comes with a gruesome history and starts to slowly go insane when plagued by visions of a dead girl. We always hate it when the estate agents leave that off the listing.Wentworth Miller, who already demonstrated his scripting chops with Stoker, wrote this one and the project is now set to be touted at the American Film Market. Ellen Page is dipping her toes into a second comic book franchise—and this time it will be as the lead. Variety has reported that the actress currently playing Kitty Pryde in Fox's X-Men film franchise is in negotiations to headline the adaptation of Greg Rucka's spy-series "Queen and Country," originally published by Oni Press.
The film focuses on Tara Chace, an agent for England's Special Operations Section of the Sis, as she tries to stop a terrorist plot. The film is being eyed for a potential franchise, possibly in the vein of the "Bourne" series. Variety also reports that giving Page a franchise has been in the works for a long time, after working with the actress on a number of different projects.

Do you hear that? That’s the sound of hundreds of action cinephiles softly weeping around the world.
In one of the more dismaying news items of the month (and that’s including the widely contested casting of Ben Affleck as Batman), the American remake of Indonesian martial arts flick The Raid: Redemption, which just clocked in at #21 on We Got This Covered’s list of the Top 100 Action Movies, has just landed in the hands of Battleship writers Erich and Jon Hoeber.
I’ll wait while you scan that again to make sure you read it right. Unfortunately, this is not some kind of a prank. American film studio Screen Gems, trusted with the rights to remake a terrific genre flick, has inexplicably sanctioned the same writers who brought us the godawful Whiteout and so-bad-it-hurt Battleship to rewrite the script for the American version.
You might say that I...

Serial killers have long been the stuff of which nightmares are made. The serial killer sub-genre of horror has brought us some amazingly memorable characters that still haunt us to this day. On February 19th Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will bring us a new name in fear with The Factory.
Starring John Cusack and Jennifer Carpenter as detectives tracking a murderer, The Factory is set in the bitter cold of a Buffalo winter. A great place to hunt a hunter. And to celebrate the release of this newest addition to the sub-genre, we've compiled a list of the Top 11 Movie Serial Killers.
There is certainly a long list of names to choose from, but we narrowed the field a bit by limiting it to those who were just regular human people. No supernatural involvement here, just a person or group of people who've gone off the deep end and made...

Hawkeye #7 will serve as a Hurricane Sandy Relief issue. Matt Fraction has altered the schedule of his Marvel Comics title to include the issue, the royalties of which he will donate to charity. Artists Steve Lieber (Whiteout) and Jesse Hamm (Good As Lily) will join him for two stories of heroism set around the storm that ravaged the East Coast of North America in October. "Hawkeye has turned out to be a book about a regular guy doing superhuman things so this seemed the appropriate place to tell a story about precisely that - regular people, real people, coming together in the face of this once-a-century scale disaster," said Fraction. This January, Clint Barton and Kate Bishop redefine what it means to be a hero as a devastating storm hits the Marvel Universe in Hawkeye #7! Blockbuster writer Matt Fraction teams with Eisner Award winning artist Steve Lieber (Whiteout, Whiteout: Melt), and artist Jesse Hamm (Good As Lily) to tell not one, but two stories of heroism that will resonate with fans worldwide. Separated by the massive storm, follow both arrow-slingers as they struggle to help those who need it most make it out of this tragic event in one piece. "Hawkeye has turned out to be a book about a regular guy doing superhuman things so this seemed the appropriate place to tell a story about precisely that -- regular people, real people, coming together in the face of this once-a-century scale disaster," explained writer Matt Fraction. "We kinda-sorta blew our schedule up to make this happen; the book...

Another fresh clip from Len Wiseman's sci-fi action reboot 'Total Recall' has risen thanks to Hollywood.com. The clip, entitled 'Activated', comes flying up the ass of the previous gun slinging clip we featured on the site yesterday (hit the link below) and once again features the delectable Kate Beckinsale -below ('Whiteout') this time along with co-star Bryan Cranston who plays the role of bad guy Cohaagen. Not too much to go on again here but it still has similiarities to its Paul Verhoeven helmed 1990 counterpart. I guess we'll find out what nods and winks the original will get in the remake when it hits theatres this August. Colin Farrell ('Fright Night'), Jessica Biel ('The Tall Man'), Bill Nighy ('Shaun of the Dead') and Ethan Hawke ('Daybreakers') also star...

In an interview with Screen Rant, Battleship star Taylor Kitsch said that:
"I think you will get (director) Pete Berg's, as well as my own, flavor in there. We're very collaborative, and we co-wrote a lot of those scenes. And it has that feel of a Pete Burg movie, which is so fun. But he definitely doesn't forget about character. And that guy can tell stories just as good as anyone else."
He went on to say:
"It's how collaborative Pete and I are. It's really how much we admire working with each other. It was just bouncing ideas... He would send me the script and be like 'I want you to rip it in half. Do it.'...and he'd be like 'No. Yes. Cool. I'm thinking about it.' It was great."
Taken out of context, that makes Berg sound really indecisive, or at least ambivalent, but...

This week down at your neighborhood newsstand: The secret lives of a giant man; Mercenary living; Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?; Six in the chamber.
3 Story: The Secret Story of the Giant Man–Matt Kindt is one of those very rare comics creators who can change hats without ever compromising his own personal vision. His drawing style is very indie-friendly: very soft, often black-and-white, almost cute. None of the bold Kirby crackles or aggressive McFarlane inks that put off a lot of non-comics types (or so I’ve noticed). Yet Kindt’s stories often touch on familiar subject matter to die-hards: spies, armageddon, and giant men. So it’s not even so much that he changes hats, I guess, as he manages to combine his many interests into one pleasing package after another. This book, a follow-up to 2009′s almost-the-titled 3 Story: The Secret History of the Giant Man,...
