A Dwayne Johnsonaction movie that grossed $428 million is getting a new streaming home. Decades after making his WWE debut, Johnson is now one of the most recognizable movie stars on the planet. Following his jump to acting, Johnson appeared in a number of action movies, like The Rundown (2003), Faster (2010), Fast Five (2011), Snitch (2013), and Pain & Gain (2013). More recently, Johnson has embraced more family-friendly fare, but that doesn't mean he's left his action roots behind.
The mid and late 2010s saw the release of a handful of classic Johnson action movies, but the budgets got larger and they became action blockbusters instead of genre movies in the mid-budget space, reflecting the actor's growing star power. In addition to several Fast & Furious movies, Johnson starred in San Andreas in 2015 before going on to have a big year in 2018, starring in two buzzy titles. One of these titles was Skyscraper, which was ultimately a disappointment,...

Netflix is riding into the new year with one of the most brutal depictions of expansion in the American West thanks to a relentlessly intense mini-series called American Primeval. Created and written by Mark L. Smith, with direction by Peter Berg, American Primeval revolves around Sara (Betty Gilpin) and her son, Devin (Preston Mota) traveling through harsh and unforgiving territory with a survivalist, Isaac (Taylor Kitsch), to escape a grim fate and find a new home. While making the journey, they experience violent collisions with cults, religious zealots, cutthroats, and lawmakers willing to kill to create a new world.
To mark the arrival of American Primeval, we spoke with the show’s director, Peter Berg, the Indigenous Consultant Julie O’Keefe, and lead actors Betty Gilpin (Sara), Taylor Kitsch (Isaac), Dane DeHaan (Jacob Pratt), Kim Coates (Bringham Young), Derek Hinkey (Red Feather), and Saura Lightfoot-Leon (Abish Pratt) about their respective roles,...

The 2017 Baywatch cast features a mix of world-famous movie stars and promising newcomers at the time, and they've all followed up with some huge projects. Baywatch marked a major cinematic reboot of the classic television series that dominated screens in the 1990s. The film infused the original's campy charm with a modern twist. It not only aimed to capture the essence of the beloved series but also sought to broaden its appeal to a new generation. With its mix of action, comedy, and a hint of nostalgia, Baywatch offered a fresh take on the iconic show.
A significant aspect of the reboot's appeal lay in its star-studded cast. The film featured a mix of established and rising actors, each bringing their unique flair to the characters. This casting decision was pivotal in reimagining the series for a contemporary audience, and while it is considered one of the worst movies based on TV shows,...

Plot: While exploring the American West, a small group travels across the plains, experiencing violent collisions with cults, religion, and men and women fighting for control of the new world.
Review: When most people think of the Western genre, they envision actors like Clint Eastwood, John Wayne, James Stewart, and Gary Cooper playing six-shooter superheroes with leathery skin, shiny spurs, and a devil-may-care attitude. As icons of an idealized American West, these men often shine as paragons of virtue, justice, and heroism. Still, history bends to the will of the storyteller, someone who can glorify the cowboy and make their actions appear pure and righteous. American Primeval offers no such quarter to its gun-slingers. Though the series presents a fictionalized and dramatized recount of 1857, its depiction of harsh living conditions, cutthroat politics, and relentless violence is all too honest. Saddle up, folks! Dwayne Johnson remains one of the most recognizable actors working in Hollywood today, and is widely known for starring in and producing family-friendly fare. Getting his start as a wrestler in the WWE, Johnson's first major movie role was as the Scorpion King in The Mummy Returns (2001), a role he used to springboard into other films like The Scorpion King (2002), The Rundown (2003), and Walking Tall (2004).
Johnson continued his tough-guy acting persona throughout the late 2000s and into the 2010s, appearing in movies like Faster (2010), Snitch (2013), and San Andreas (2015), as well as several Fast & Furious movies. Though he continues to play more serious characters occasionally, the recent years of Johnson's career have seen him taking on a number of lighter and more comedic roles, particularly in four-quadrant movies for the whole family. When it comes to beloved family fare, there's perhaps no greater Johnson movie than his 2016 animated adventure.

It has been a long road seeing wrestling superstar The Rock evolve into the brand entertainment tycoon Dwayne Johnson of today. The hulking star has released a new Christmas adventure movie in time for the holiday season with Red One. Now, it seems like Johnson’s everywhere and he’s ingrained in pop culture. But back in the early millennium, he was still crossing over into acting and while he already had some success out of the gate, there’s one movie that was seen as his true arrival to be cinema’s next action hero. In today’s episode, we talk The Rundown and how it held up after 21 years.
The Rundown feels like the last breath of the kinds of action movies that dominated the 80s and 90s. This is the era when every movie from stars, like Stallone or Schwarzenegger, would mainly highlight their ability to fight hordes of bad guys,...

One of John Candy’s 80s classics from director Carl Reiner, Summer Rental, was pretty elusive on physical media. Blu-ray.com is reporting that Summer Rental, which was previously scheduled to hit retailers this year, will now have its physical media release on January 21, 2025.
The 1985 comedy stars John Candy, Karen Austin, Kerri Green, Joey Lawrence, and Aubrey Jene and is directed by Dick Van Dyke Show alum and Ocean’s Eleven star, Carl Reiner, who would direct another summer-themed comedy with Mark Harmon, Summer School, just a couple years later.

You’ve probably heard the story behind the name of “Seven Bucks Productions”, and even if you haven’t, it’s a good one. After injury derailed his NFL chances, and he failed to latch on in the Cfl, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, with not much else besides the $7 in his pocket. He returned home where, despite his father’s storied wrestling career, there was little more on offer than his loving family. Dwayne’s father reluctantly taught him the family trade, and while there was a period of wrestling shows for $40 a night, his meteoric ascendency in the world of pro wrestling as “The Rock” is nigh unparalleled.
Though he maintains tremendous gratitude and deference toward the art of pro wrestling, Dwayne Johnson has never been one to limit himself to doing just one thing, and he parlayed the fame he gained from that platform into featured roles on television,...

"We all had our tuxedos ready. I'm not even joking," Colin Farrell said in a 2023 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, reflecting on the 2004 historical epic "Alexander," directed by Oliver Stone. "We were all like, 'Right, lads, we're off to the Oscars. This is a sure thing.' And then it came out."
It came out, indeed, and as alluded to by the Oscar-nominated actor, things didn't exactly go as planned. In the aftermath of Ridley Scott's Best Picture-winning "Gladiator," Stone finally had the opportunity to scrape together funding for his three-hour take on Alexander the Great. The timing seemed perfect. The cast was a murderer's row. The production had all of the resources in the world at its disposal. But by just about every measure,...

There are few actors with as many ups and downs as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. The actor, wrestler, and lifestyle guru earned his celebrity through hard work. However, Dwayne Johnson’s track record has been spotty. One moment, he reached a new career high, especially during his “Franchise Viagra” era. However, the next moment, he misses with a big budget franchise tentpole film.
A common complaint against Johnson has been his insistence to appear in movies where he plays himself. Unfortunately, his 2024 ends with Red One and Moana 2, which seem to fall in that camp. With the bad reviews of Red One dominating most of the coverage, we want to focus on his better movies. Below are five of his best.

Dwayne Johnsons Returning $2 Billion Franchise Sounds More Exciting Than His Fast & Furious Comeback

Dwayne Johnson might finally be returning to the Fast & Furious saga, but his other big franchise revival sounds more fun. Johnson seemed poised for stardom during his WWE days, but most of his starring vehicles like The Rundown never became big hits. His film career changed forever thanks to his supporting role as Hobbs in Fast Five, who reappeared in the next three Fast & Furious movies. Of course, Johnson's offscreen feud with co-star Vin Diesel and subsequent departure from the main series became headline news.
This clash of egos became great media fodder, but in truth, Johnson was doing just fine without the series. Dwayne Johnson movies became a license to print money for a time - but he never quite found a series to replace Fast & Furious. This is what made his shock Fast X cameo such a pleasant surprise, which set up both a comeback...

Here’s what made The Rock a total box office king (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson didn’t just step into Hollywood—he slammed in, blending WWE flair with movie star charisma. From The Mummy Returns to Fast & Furious, he brought his wrestling roots, and fans went wild every time he dropped those iconic moves, reminding everyone that The People’s Champ never forgets his roots.
One of Johnson’s earliest crossovers from the ring to the screen happened in Star Trek: Voyager. In the sixth season’s episode “Tsunkatse,” he appeared as the Pendari Champion, squaring off against Seven of Nine. And what did he do? He casually dropped his signature move, Rock Bottom, slamming his opponent to the mat with a grin, saying, “Yes, I’m that guy.”

Dwayne Johnson may have captured the hearts of the world in the 2000s. However, it looks like the star might be ready to take his biggest risk ever. In the world of Hollywood blockbusters, budgets can often make or break a film’s success. With that in mind, an upcoming film of the 52-year-old, Red One, is said to have a budget higher than James Cameron’s Avatar.

What many don’t realize is that twenty one years ago, in 2003, we got a hidden gem that unofficially is the best Uncharted movie so far and it is called, The Rundown! Video game adaptations often get a skeptical eye, and unfortunately, the official Uncharted film didn’t do much to change that perception.
Dwayne Johnson in The Rundown | Credits: Universal Pictures
This left a lot of people going back to rediscover The Rundown, the unofficial adaptation that actually did justice to the game, and it came out even before the game itself!
Dwayne Johnson Gave Us the Best Uncharted Movie in 2003!
So, how similar is The Rundown to Uncharted? Let’s break it down! The Uncharted video games definitely take a page from the Indiana Jones and Tomb Raider playbook. With its gut-punching action, strong and complex characters, and witty one-liners, one can easily argue that The Rundown likely inspired Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.

Seann William Scott has boarded ABC’s upcoming comedy series, “Shifting Gears.”
He will join series lead Tim Allen, as well as Kat Dennings, Daryl “Chill” Mitchell, Maxwell Simkins and Barrett Margolis in the new sitcom. Scott’s casting comes months after “Shifting Gears” was ordered to series by ABC after initially receiving a pilot order from the network in March.
The new series centers on a stubborn, widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop named Matt (Allen). “When Matt’s estranged daughter Riley (Dennings) and her kids move into his house, the real restoration begins,” according to the official logline.
Scott joins the cast as Gabriel, a family friend of Matt and Riley who works in the shop. Mitchell will play Stitch, while Simkins plays Carter and Margolis stars as Georgia.

Dwayne Johnson's The Rundown has become a surprise hit on Netflix 21 years later. Released in 2003, director Peter Berg's The Rundown marks one of Johnson's first major movie roles. The film sees the former WWE wrestler starring as Beck, a bounty hunter who teams up with the son of a powerful loan shark to seek out a legendary lost treasure in the Amazon. The movie, which also stars Seann William Scott, Rosario Dawson, and Christopher Walken, was a notable box office failure.
Now, new data from Netflix reveals that The Rundown was the eighth most popular movie on the service in the U.S. for the week of September 2 8. While exact viewership data isn't provided, the Johnson movie beats 3:10 to Yuma (2007) and Trolls Band Together (2023). The Rundown falls short of other titles like Shark Tale (2004), The Union (2024), Migration (2023), Aloha (2015), Sonic the Hedgehog (2020), The Deliverance (2024), and, in the number one spot,...

Dave Bautista, whose latest action comedy The Killer’s Game comes to theaters this Friday, is ready to make hearts go pitter-pat by starring in a romantic comedy. In the past, Bautista questioned if he was “too unattractive” to become a silver-screen Lothario, asking Page Six in a 2023 interview, “Is there something that unappealing about me that excludes me from these parts?” Aww, Dave! Don’t listen to your Emo Teen Life Coach. He doesn’t know what he’s talking about! I know plenty of people who find your rugged good looks alluring, and then some.
Fast-forward to the Los Angeles premiere of The Killer’s Game, where Bautista told The Hollywood Reporter that his Page Six comments “sparked quite a conversation, but I started getting a lot of phone calls after that.”
“I said that and started getting calls immediately,” Bautista continued. “So we’ve got a couple that we...

Maybe there’s hope for quality Netflix originals apart from its awards contenders. “Rebel Ridge,” a topical thriller about an ex-Marine confronting a corrupt small-town sheriff, is #1 at Netflix. It stars Aaron Pierre — who stepped into the role after John Boyega walked off the production in June 2021. A respected actor and ascendant star, Pierre is not a household name like Mark Wahlberg or Adam Sandler or Eddie Murphy, all of whom recently took Netflix originals to #1.
Nor is it a flashy drama, or a big-budget production. Its director, Jeremy Saulnier, most recently directed “Hold the Dark” for Netflix in 2018 (along with a couple of episodes of “True Detective”). IndieWire has watched his career for years, but directors like these also have wound up at Netflix making films that lack edginess or creativity. This seems like a happy exception. Its success suggests that well-crafted stories driven by substantial characters can be popular,...

If there's anything Netflix is good for, besides exposing audiences to international films and TV shows they might otherwise miss, it's churning up forgotten action movies and bestowing new life upon them. The streamer resurrected "The Bricklayer" earlier this year, and immediately Netflixers flocked to the underseen actioner. The same recently happened with Bruce Willis' "Red," which topped Netflix charts some 14 years after it first bowed. Now, it's Dwayne Johnson's turn. The man's bizarre attempts to stay in the now defunct DC Extended Universe may've put a dent in his veneer of likability, but he's currently proving that he can still bring in the crowds — at least on streaming. His 2003 action comedy "The Rundown" has hit Netflix and is making a sneaky run up the charts.
This might actually be an example of a film worthy of revisiting, too. "The Rundown," which was known as "Welcome to the Jungle" internationally,...

Many movies have been made about soldiers whose skill set proves out of step once they re-enter the civilian world. Some of them treat those differences with empathy and insight; but more often than not, they leverage them for explosive, empty action sequences. “Rebel Ridge” mostly falls perfunctorily in the latter category.
Written and directed by Jeremy Saulnier (“Green Room”), the film’s focus on a Black soldier adds degrees of complexity to the conflicts that erupt between him and local law enforcement in a small, mostly white town. But if racial politics (cinematic and otherwise) prompt Saulnier to treat him marginally more thoughtfully than most movie veterans, the filmmaker’s obligations to genre formula end up overshadowing those differences by the time the last empty, explosive action sequence has unfolded.

One of John Candy’s 80s classics from director Carl Reiner, Summer Rental, was pretty elusive on physical media. Fans of this comedy don’t have to wait any longer as the boutique label Kino Lorber will now be releasing a new Blu-ray transfer of the film sometime this year. Blu-ray.com is reporting that Summer Rental will be hitting retailers in late 2024.
The 1985 comedy stars John Candy, Karen Austin, Kerri Green, Joey Lawrence, and Aubrey Jene. The plot description reads, “After air traffic controller Jack Chester loses a plane (it’s covered on his screen by a fly), he’s told to take a break. Jack books his family into a plush resort, but it turns out that their lodgings are in a hut by the beach, and that’s as good as the vacation gets.” Reiner would direct another summer-themed comedy with Mark Harmon, Summer School, just a couple years later.

Flashback to a time when Dwayne Johnson was still crossing over from the WWE to major Hollywood films. He was still being billed as “The Rock.” His physique was more muscular than monstrous. Fans and general audiences were finding out that his charismatic mic skills could transfer to fun, charismatic characters on screen. Johnson only had a couple of prior credits with The Mummy Returns and the spin-off The Scorpion King before he made the action comedy The Rundown from director Peter Berg.
2003’s The Rundown was Johnson’s sophomore starring effort and it would lay the groundwork for one of the biggest names in blockbuster movies for a number of years. Now, Kino Lorber will be releasing a new 4K Blu-ray of the film, which co-stars Sean William Scott, Rosario Dawson, Christopher Walken and Ewen Bremner. This new physical media release is expected to hit retailers sometime later this year.

After waging war with House Atreides in Dune: Part Two, Dave Bautista trades his Harkonnen armor for something more discrete as he slips into the role of a hitman on borrowed time in The Killer’s Game trailer. Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2024 is missing a certain amount of original series firepower. In the place of a blockbuster like The Handmaid’s Tale or Shōgun, however, is some content diversity.

This mystery drama takes place during the reign of Henry VIII and features none other than Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean) investigating a murder. Other series of note this month include the Korean drama Uncle Samsik on May 15.

What’s the best destination for spring TV? IndieWire doesn’t have a definitive answer, but as we do every month we’ll help you weigh the options with a breakdown of everything coming to your favorite streaming platforms in May.
The month is a prime time to have Disney+, what with the ongoing and buzzy success of “X-Men 97” and upcoming “Marvel Studios’ Assembled” going behind the scenes of the reboot series. May is of course the month of Star Wars, and the House of Mouse will celebrate with “Star Wars: Tales of the Empire” on May 4. Disney is also home to BBC America’s “Doctor Who,” which returns for a highly-anticipated 14th season with Ncuti Gatwa stepping into the Tardis as the new Doctor (he stepped into the role in December 2023 as part of the series’ beloved Christmas special tradition).

Megan Fox finally weighed in on the “Love Is Blind” controversy that erupted earlier this year when Season 6 cast member Chelsea Blackwell told her eventual fiancé Jimmy Presnell that Fox was her celebrity doppelgänger. Presnell ended up telling Blackwell that wasn’t true, while “Love Is Blind” viewers bombarded social media platforms to roast and mock Blackwell for a comparison many thought wasn’t accurate.

The Rock's return to Fast & Furious signals the end of his beef with Vin Diesel and a pivot in his career. Fast 11 needs a streamlined approach, shedding excess characters and bloated plots to regain momentum. The franchise has evolved significantly since Fast Five, but Hobbs' return may be crucial to its future success.
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's first appearance in the Fast and Furious saga drove it to new heights, but over a decade on, can he do it all again? The Rock was such a charismatic presence during his WWE days that he felt like a natural fit for movie stardom - but it was a long road to get there. Most of his early star vehicles like The Rundown underperformed, and he was soon relegated to mediocre kids' movies like The Tooth Fairy. It wasn't until he was cast as Hobbs in Fast Five that his star persona finally clicked.

Dwayne Johnson has had a memorable career in Hollywood, becoming the highest-paid actor in the industry and proving that he can excel in both action-packed and comedic roles. Some of Johnson's movies have struggled at the box office and he has faced criticism for playing similar characters, but he has also had strong performances and appeared in successful franchises. Films like "Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw," "Central Intelligence," and "The Rundown" showcase Johnson's talent as an action star, while movies like "Furious 7," "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle," and "Moana" highlight his ability to bring heart and humor to his roles.
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has become one of the biggest actors in Hollywood and, in the process, has produced some stand-out movies. Johnson began his film career in 2001 and left the wrestling industry to pursue full-time acting in 2004. While his earliest films didn't always find the same success as his in-ring career,...

There’s just one problem with Ziwe’s first book of personal essays: She really hates getting personal. “I don’t want anyone to know anything about me,” she says with a laugh while Zooming from her home in New York. “I hate sharing.”
The comedian and writer became famous for her uncomfortable, nearly satirical interviews with stars about racial and gender politics. Starting on Instagram Live and eventually pivoting to an eponymous, two-season Showtime series, she’s not comfortable being on the receiving end of a personal line of questioning. But Ziwe — who spent years in the writers rooms of The Rundown With Robin Thede, Desus & Mero and Dickinson — realized she needed to “chip away at the wall” she’d put up. The resulting collection, Black Friend, due Oct. 17 from Abrams, reflects on her relationship to such topics as identity, body image and code-switching.

Man Crashes Car into New Jersey Police Station While Blasting Guns N’ Roses’ “Welcome to the Jungle”

A New Jersey man deliberately crashed his SUV into a police station in Independence Township on September 20th, and he was blasting Guns N’ Roses‘ classic “Welcome to the Jungle” when he did it.
Thankfully no one was hurt during the incident, according to Huffington Post, though one officer narrowly avoided being struck by the vehicle being driven by John Hargreaves, 34, of Belvidere.
The SUV ended up in the station’s squad room, and surveillance footage sees Hargreaves immediately exit the vehicle and put his hands in the air. According to an official press release from the police department (see below), “The defendant exited the vehicle and appeared to be celebrating as he was apprehended by officers on scene as his car stereo blared the song ‘Welcome to the Jungle.'”
Police still haven’t determined a motive for Hargreaves barreling into the station, though the crash happened just minutes...

In fairness to the movies that shamelessly ripped off Indiana Jones, creator George Lucas took inspiration from earlier works as well. Borrowing ideas from prior stories and characters is part and parcel of the creative process of filmmaking. Sometimes, this results in blatantly shameless copies that don't offer much else except a rehash of already known and established tropes, with some Indie ripoffs even crossing over into so-bad-it's-good territory. However, this can also lead to compelling films that both challenge and contribute to the development of the original premise, character, or story. In fact, Harrison Ford's Indiana Jones himself is an amalgamation of prominent works from way before Indy's time.
Indeed, George Lucas' vision for Indiana Jones was inspired by noir films from the '40s like The Maltese Falcon and Casablanca, as well as serials from the 1930s such as Zorro and Flash Gordon. Moreover, Indy also bears...

Over a decade after the last effort fell apart, writer Steven E. de Souza addresses the chances of a potential Commando movie remake. Hitting theaters in 1985, the original Commando came fresh off of Arnold Schwarzenegger's star-making turn in James Cameron's The Terminator and saw the action icon portray a retired United States Army Special Forces Colonel who races against time to rescue his daughter from a South American dictator. While not a critical darling, it was a box office smash and is considered one of Schwarzenegger's most iconic movies to date.
During a recent interview with Radio Times for the movie's special screening at the London Action Festival, Steven E. de Souza was asked about the previously scrapped Commando remake from David Ayer. The writer didn't offer too many details on the prior attempt, but proved doubtful in his feelings of another remake gaining ground, feeling no one can recapture Schwarzenegger's charisma,...
