Exclusive: Kelly Rowland (Mea Culpa) and Cliff “Method Man” Smith (Power Book II: Ghost) are set to lead the new Amazon MGM Studios rom-com Relationship Goals, based on Michael Todd’s New York Times bestseller Relationship Goals: How to Win at Dating, Marriage, and Sex. Robin Thede (A Black Lady Sketch Show) and Annie Gonzalez (Flamin’ Hot) will also star.

Relationship Goals is a funny and inspiring romantic comedy on finding lasting love and sustaining a healthy relationship at every stage of courtship. The book, based on Todd’s viral sermon series about dating, marriage, and sex, spent 13 straight weeks on the NY Times bestsellers list and debuted at No. 1 on Amazon, according to the streamer.

The script was written by Laura Lekkos (Somewhere Only We Know), with prior drafts by Michael Elliot (R&b) and Cory Tynan (R&b). Rowland and Bart Lipton will executive produce while DeVon Franklin will produce. Linda Mendoza is set to direct.

Rowland recently starred in Netflix’s Tyler Perry film Mea Culpa. She has also guest starred on several series including Girlfriends, Empire, American Soul, Being Mary Jane, and L.A.’s Finest. On the film side, Rowland appeared in Kevin Hart’s Think Like A Man, New Line Cinema’s Freddy vs. Jason, Netflix’s The Curse of Bridge Hollow, and produced and starred in Merry Liddle Christmas Baby. Additionally, she executive produced her docuseries Chasing Destiny and co-produced a digital series called Milk + Honey alongside Idris Elba and Issa Rae. She is repped by UTA, Sb Projects, and Del Shaw Moonves Tanaka.

Smith starred in all four seasons of the hit Starz series Power Book II: Ghost, which recently wrapped up after four seasons last year. For his portrayal of Davis MacLean, he received three NAACP Image Awards for “Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.” He can currently be seen in Carnegie Hill Entertainment’s feature Bad Shabbos, and the Paramount+’s feature film On the Come Up for which he received an NAACP Image Award nomination for “Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture”. Smith will next be seen in Maude Apatow’s directorial debut Poetic License and as a guest star in Peacock’s Emmy Award-winning original series Poker Face for Season 2. Six-time Emmy nominee Robin Thede is the creator, showrunner, executive producer, writer, and star of HBO’s Emmy-winning sketch comedy series, A Black Lady Sketch Show. She recently starred alongside Eddie Murphy and Tracee Ellis Ross in the Amazon MGM Studios holiday feature, Candy Cane Lane. Previously, she was the creator, executive producer, writer and host of The Rundown with Robin Thede on BET becoming one of the only Black women to host a late-night talk show. She is represented by WME and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole Llp.

Gonzalez can be seen in films such as East of the Mountains directed by S.J. Chiro, Flamin’ Hot from Searchlight Pictures and Franklin Entertainment, Drive-Away Dolls directed by Ethan Coen, and Jenni, which Gonzalez stars in and produced. On the TV side, credits include Netflix’s Gentefied, Showtime’s Shameless, FX’s American Horror Story, Netflix’s Good Girls, Starz’s Vida, and most recently, NBC’s Lopez vs Lopez. Franklin serves as President and CEO of Franklin Entertainment, a production company dedicated to uplifting the human spirit through inspirational content. Exclusive: E! News saw some impressive growth in 2024 with 11B views across all digital and social content — up 50% from the year prior.

The success was led by Instagram, which was up 49% to 5.6B video views, according to internal data from NBCUniversal. Its sister platform Facebook saw the largest growth of the year with a 261% lift from 2023 to tally 1.2B video views.

TikTok collected 1.9B video views, marking a 52% uptick from 2023, and YouTube saw a 61% increase with 271M video views across E!’s main channels.

E! News also launched its latest digital series Hot Goss in October. The first four episodes generated 20M video views and 222K social engagements across all platforms. According to the brand, the content reached about 16M users.

The network is developing Overstepping, a multi-cam comedy produced by his Two Shakes Entertainment banner and CBS Studios, with Lauren Ashley Smith set as writer and exec producer.

Seann William Scott has boarded ABC’s upcoming comedy series, “Shifting Gears.”

He will join series lead Tim Allen, as well as Kat Dennings, Daryl “Chill” Mitchell, Maxwell Simkins and Barrett Margolis in the new sitcom. Scott’s casting comes months after “Shifting Gears” was ordered to series by ABC after initially receiving a pilot order from the network in March.

The new series centers on a stubborn, widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop named Matt (Allen). “When Matt’s estranged daughter Riley (Dennings) and her kids move into his house, the real restoration begins,” according to the official logline.

Scott joins the cast as Gabriel, a family friend of Matt and Riley who works in the shop. Mitchell will play Stitch, while Simkins plays Carter and Margolis stars as Georgia.

The Perfect Couple shot to the top overall spot in Nielsen’s streaming rankings for its premiere week.

The murder mystery limited series, which stars Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber and Dakota Fanning, accumulated 1.91 billion minutes of viewing for the week of Sept. 2-8 (it premiered on Sept. 5). That’s the fifth highest total for any original series premiere week on the streaming charts this year, behind Fool Me Once (3.04 billion minutes), Fallout (2.9 billion), Bridgerton (2.76 billion) and Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender (2.56 billion).

The Perfect Couple was one of five titles to record more than a billion minutes of viewing for the week. The others are Netflix’s movie Rebel Ridge (1.11 billion), Family Guy (1.06 billion), Prison Break (1.05 billion) — which had been the overall No. 1 for the previous four weeks — and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (1.02 billion), which was even with its season two premiere a week earlier.

Maybe there’s hope for quality Netflix originals apart from its awards contenders. “Rebel Ridge,” a topical thriller about an ex-Marine confronting a corrupt small-town sheriff, is #1 at Netflix. It stars Aaron Pierre — who stepped into the role after John Boyega walked off the production in June 2021. A respected actor and ascendant star, Pierre is not a household name like Mark Wahlberg or Adam Sandler or Eddie Murphy, all of whom recently took Netflix originals to #1.

Nor is it a flashy drama, or a big-budget production. Its director, Jeremy Saulnier, most recently directed “Hold the Dark” for Netflix in 2018 (along with a couple of episodes of “True Detective”). If there's anything Netflix is good for, besides exposing audiences to international films and TV shows they might otherwise miss, it's churning up forgotten action movies and bestowing new life upon them. The streamer resurrected "The Bricklayer" earlier this year, and immediately Netflixers flocked to the underseen actioner. The same recently happened with Bruce Willis' "Red," which topped Netflix charts some 14 years after it first bowed. Now, it's Dwayne Johnson's turn. The man's bizarre attempts to stay in the now defunct DC Extended Universe may've put a dent in his veneer of likability, but he's currently proving that he can still bring in the crowds — at least on streaming. His 2003 action comedy "The Rundown" has hit Netflix and is making a sneaky run up the charts.

Some of them treat those differences with empathy and insight; but more often than not, they leverage them for explosive, empty action sequences. “Rebel Ridge” mostly falls perfunctorily in the latter category.

Written and directed by Jeremy Saulnier (“Green Room”), the film’s focus on a Black soldier adds degrees of complexity to the conflicts that erupt between him and local law enforcement in a small, mostly white town. But if racial politics (cinematic and otherwise) prompt Saulnier to treat him marginally more thoughtfully than most movie veterans, the filmmaker’s obligations to genre formula end up overshadowing those differences by the time the last empty, explosive action sequence has unfolded.

One of John Candy’s 80s classics from director Carl Reiner, Summer Rental, was pretty elusive on physical media. Fans of this comedy don’t have to wait any longer as the boutique label Kino Lorber will now be releasing a new Blu-ray transfer of the film sometime this year. Blu-ray.com is reporting that Summer Rental will be hitting retailers in late 2024.

The 1985 comedy stars John Candy, Karen Austin, Kerri Green, Joey Lawrence, and Aubrey Jene. The plot description reads, “After air traffic controller Jack Chester loses a plane (it’s covered on his screen by a fly), he’s told to take a break. Jack books his family into a plush resort, but it turns out that their lodgings are in a hut by the beach, and that’s as good as the vacation gets.” Reiner would direct another summer-themed comedy with Mark Harmon, Summer School, just a couple years later.

Flashback to a time when Dwayne Johnson was still crossing over from the WWE to major Hollywood films. He was still being billed as “The Rock.” His physique was more muscular than monstrous. Fans and general audiences were finding out that his charismatic mic skills could transfer to fun, charismatic characters on screen. Johnson only had a couple of prior credits with The Mummy Returns and the spin-off The Scorpion King before he made the action comedy The Rundown from director Peter Berg.

2003’s The Rundown was Johnson’s sophomore starring effort and it would lay the groundwork for one of the biggest names in blockbuster movies for a number of years. Now, Kino Lorber will be releasing a new 4K Blu-ray of the film, which co-stars Sean William Scott, Rosario Dawson, Christopher Walken and Ewen Bremner. This new physical media release is expected to hit retailers sometime later this year.

A New Jersey man deliberately crashed his SUV into a police station in Independence Township on September 20th, and he was blasting Guns N’ Roses‘ classic “Welcome to the Jungle” when he did it.

Thankfully no one was hurt during the incident, according to Huffington Post, though one officer narrowly avoided being struck by the vehicle being driven by John Hargreaves, 34, of Belvidere.

The SUV ended up in the station’s squad room, and surveillance footage sees Hargreaves immediately exit the vehicle and put his hands in the air. According to an official press release from the police department (see below), “The defendant exited the vehicle and appeared to be celebrating as he was apprehended by officers on scene as his car stereo blared the song ‘Welcome to the Jungle.'”

Police still haven’t determined a motive for Hargreaves barreling into the station, though the crash happened just minutes...

In fairness to the movies that shamelessly ripped off Indiana Jones, creator George Lucas took inspiration from earlier works as well.
