When he’s not directing episodes of Severance or learning how to be a parent to estranged nephews in the David Gordon Green-directed holiday comedy Nutcrackers, Ben Stiller likes to map out his next move, which could take him back to the Circle of Trust for a new Meet the Parents movie. Ben Stiller On ‘Zoolander 2’ Being Unfairly Treated By Critics: “It’s Hard To Think It Was That Bad”
Ben Stiller is looking back at Zoolander 2 and still doesn’t understand why it didn’t match the first film’s success.
In an appearance on Hot Ones on December 5, Stiller opened up about the Zoolander sequel after host Sean Evans asked which of his movies “was most misunderstood or treated unfairly by critics.”
“It’s very hard to analyze why critics like something or don’t. I’m always surprised when critics love something and I’m always surprised when they hate something because it’s so subjective,” Stiller said.
He added, “It’s hard to think it was that bad, that people didn’t like it that much. But maybe I’m wrong.”
Earlier this year, Stiller said he felt “blindsided” by the comedy sequel’s box office results.
“I thought everybody wanted this,” Stiller said on David Duchovny’s podcast Fail Better (via People). “And then it’s like,...

Ben Stiller appeared on “Hot Ones” and confirmed that the team behind “Meet the Fockers” had to find a real person with the Focker surname in order to prevent the MPA (then called the MPAA) from giving the comedy an R rating. The 2004 film was the sequel to “Meet the Parents” and became a blockbuster hit with $522 million worldwide, which made it the seventh highest-grossing movie of the year.
“I think that is true. Yeah,” Stiller said. “It was a PG-13 and they thought it was too close to ‘fucker.’ Yes. They have to clear names. … Something like that did happen.”
“I also remember having to go to the MPAA when they wanted to give ‘Zoolander’ an R rating because the goat orgy is something they didn’t care for or think was wholesome enough,” Stiller continued about his ratings battles over the years. “I wrote a little speech and...

I think that a lot of people are accusing this generation – whatever they mean by “this generation” – of being too woke and too touchy to actually enjoy different works of art that carry content that may be triggering.
One of those people who believe so is Ben Stiller. Who, if you happen to have seen its re-runs on TV, is the star of ‘Zoolander,’ a comedy that caricatures male models.
But that’s not his most controversial work, if you can believe it: he, along with other stars like Robert Downey Jr., Jack Black, Jay Baruchel and Brandon T. Jackson, starred in a 2008 satirical comedy, titled ‘Tropic Thunder.’
According to him, in today’s climate, ‘Tropic Thunder’ would not pass production let alone have any kind of audience engagement.

Ben Stiller doesn’t think that if pitched today, Tropic Thunder would ever get made.
In a new interview, the Zoolander actor explained why he thinks the 2008 satirical action comedy film he directed and co-wrote would have difficulty getting greenlit.
“I doubt it. Obviously, in this environment, edgier comedy is just harder to do,” Stiller told Collider. “Definitely not at the scale we made it at, too, in terms of the economics of the business.”
Tropic Thunder starred Robert Downey Jr. playing Kirk Lazarus, an Australian method actor who uses blackface to portray an African American soldier.
Stiller noted that “even at the time, we were fortunate to get it made,” crediting Steven Spielberg and Dreamworks with helping get it greenlit.
“[Spielberg] read it and was like, ‘Alright, let’s make this thing,'” Stiller said noting that the film was “a very inside movie.”

Ben Stiller has admitted that making his 2008 satirical comedy Tropic Thunder today would be “incredibly dicey.”
The actor-director-producer recently explained to Collider why he’s doubtful that type of movie could work in the current environment where “edgier comedy is just harder to do.”

Move over Community movie, there’s a new project generating ceaseless updates concerning every minute element of production: Happy Gilmore 2. We’ve heard a lot about the making of Adam Sandler’s highly anticipated sequel, from the nightmarish casting call, to the Travis Kelce cameo, to the fact that the 70-year-old alligator who played the gator that ate Chubbs’ hand is totally available to come back, presumably as a ghost.
But one piece of Happy Gilmore 2 news is, admittedly, pretty intriguing: Ben Stiller will be reprising the role of the abusive seniors’ home employee known simply as “Hal L.”
This news spread after photos of a mustachioed Stiller on the set of Happy Gilmore 2 were posted online.
Stiller was recently asked about the role during an interview with Collider, and the Zoolander star suggested that there might be more to his dirtbag character than meets the eye.

Ben Stiller was “always ready” to play Hal L again for ‘Happy Gilmore 2’.The 58-year-old actor returns as the sadistic retirement home orderly alongside Adam Sandler’s unlikely golfing superstar Happy Gilmore for the upcoming sequel to the 1996 comedy classic, and Stiller has now stressed he has been patiently waiting to reprise the role since the original came out nearly 30 years ago.He told Collider: “You don't get the opportunity to play Hal L that often.“Hal L — I'm saying this now in retrospect because I just did it — was so much fun. As we were doing, and I was there with Adam, I was flashing back to whatever it was, however many years ago, and just being so grateful that we're both still here and able to connect.”The ‘Zoolander’ star added it was his friendship with Sander, also 58, was one of the main driving forces for returning for the follow-up flick.

In a remarkable political comeback, Donald Trump has secured a second term as the US president, triumphing over Democratic rival Kamala Harris in a contested election. The 78-year-old Republican leader surpassed the crucial 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency with Wisconsin emerging as the decisive battleground state that sealed his victory. But did you know before making his way to the White House, Trump was an unexpected Hollywood regular?
Known for his real estate empire and a larger-than-life persona, Trump had an unusual side hustle, he was a cameo king! Long before his political career took off, Trump was dabbling in movies and TV shows, often playing, well, Donald Trump. In his first cameo in Ghosts Can’t Do It, Trump appeared as a version of himself. But it was his appearance in Home Alone 2 that left a lasting impact on pop culture.

The nepo baby discourse as it pertains to the arts is typically a grievance-driven undertaking that allows low- to no-talent individuals the opportunity to blame someone other than themselves for their lack of success. Though there have been instances of celebrity-adjacent people receiving seemingly undeserved gigs, these are usually one-and-not-too-many-more-done deals undone by the recipient's profound absence of skill.

Several A-listers were among the thousands who joined a livestreamed event Thursday, hosted by Oprah Winfrey, that united the many grassroots political groups supporting Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign.
At the beginning of the Unite For America call, Winfrey shouted out Meryl Streep, Chris Rock, Ben Stiller, Julia Roberts, Jennifer Lopez, Tracee Ellis Ross and Bryan Cranston for Zooming in. She also highlighted the grassroots groups that have hosted their own Zoom events supporting Harris in recent months, including Win With Black Women, White Dudes for Harris, Win With Black Men, Republicans for Harris, Swifties for Kamala, among others.
After Harris replaced President Joe Biden at the top of the Democratic ticket for the 2024 presidential race, grassroots groups have united Hollywood backers and people across the county who have tuned in for lengthy, celebrity-studded Zoom calls, raising millions for the vice president’s campaign.

Comedies may not get the prestige and glory of dramas when it comes to awards, but the filmmakers behind them would probably agree that they're infinitely harder to make. The hope is that what's being captured on set will make audiences laugh months, sometimes even years, after production is wrapped. In order to determine whether something is funny, you're relying on a much smaller crew of people, from those who wrote the script to the crew behind the camera. If they're laughing, you're probably doing something right. But comedy is extremely subjective, and you never really know if you've got a true crowd-pleaser until those first test screening reactions start rolling in.
But in the case of Will Ferrell and Jon Favreau's modern classic holiday comedy "Elf," which follows an orphan human raised by elves at the North Pole as he tries to reconnect with his estranged biological father...

Above: US teaser poster by Dawn Baillie for The Silence of the Lambs. If you have any interest in the nuts and bolts of American movie poster design, as well as excellence in that field, there is an exhibition currently running at Poster House in New York City that is one of the most insightful and well-thought-out introductions to the craft of movie-poster design—as well as to how the technology of graphic design has changed over the past 40 years—that I have ever seen. The exhibition is devoted to the work of Dawn Baillie, one of the unsung heroes of American movie poster design. I have been writing about movie posters for fifteen years and have been looking at them and thinking about them for much longer, and I have to admit that until this exhibit I had never heard the name Dawn Baillie, despite the fact that she is responsible for,...

If you think about it, Robert Downey Jr.’s rise to fame is like a rollercoaster ride—full of twists, turns, and the occasional loop-de-loop. Just like Tony Stark’s journey from playboy billionaire to superhero extraordinaire, the actor, 59, himself has had his fair share of ups and downs.

Ben Stiller is speaking out about the Israel-Hamas war, more than nine months after the Hamas-led terrorist attack on Israel on Oct. 7.
In an opinion essay published Thursday by Time magazine, the Emmy-winning actor explained why he felt obligated to share his stance on the ongoing conflict, the rise of antisemitism and the need for global peace, saying he “can’t ignore the crisis that is front and center in the world right now.”
“Saying nothing at this point feels like I am betraying my own conscience,” Stiller, who is Jewish, wrote. “But what do you say? It didn’t take long for a scene from a 2000s comedy to turn into Owen Wilson’s iconic meme after the clip resurfaced and made rounds on social media. The words “Excuse me bruh” were practically plastered across everyone’s lips as the meme went viral.

Hollywood is bursting with "what if" scenarios -- "Sliding Doors" moments where actors, writers, directors, and craftspeople almost made a certain project, or almost walked away from a job that would become huge for their careers. With the benefit of hindsight, these situations are often fun to think about -- especially if, as in the case in today's example, A) the two people competing for a part were vying for a memorable role in a well-known movie, and B) they both went on to have great careers, so the thought exercise doesn't feel mean-spirited or just plain sad.
In an oral history of "Zoolander" published by Vanity Fair in 2021, "Zoolander" writer, producer, director, and star Ben Stiller explained how Owen Wilson nearly didn't end up playing Hansel, Derek Zoolander's rival-male-model-turned-friend, and identified the surprising actor who almost took the role instead:

There's a delicate dance to pulling off a great cameo. If a random appearance overstays its welcome, it can feel — to borrow a wrestling term — like a cheap pop. But if executed correctly, a cameo can elevate a scene into the stratosphere. David Bowie serving as the judge of the walk-off in "Zoolander" is perfection, Matt Damon singing "Scotty Doesn't Know" in "Eurotrip" gave us an all-time great "Is that who I think it is?!" moment, and Charlton Heston delivering a gripping, out-of-place monologue in the middle of "Wayne's World 2" is nothing short of genius. But for every Mike Tyson in "The Hangover," there's Vanilla Ice in "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze." Netflix is ready to tee off with Will Ferrell.
In his first scripted TV comedy series, Ferrell will star in a scripted comedy series titled Golf. The streamer has picked up 10 episodes of the series, which is co-created by Ferrell, Ramy Youssef — who will also have an onscreen role — and Josh Rabinowitz (Babes, Ramy, The Carmichael Show).
In Golf, Ferrell will play a fictional golf legend. Details on Youssef’s part are being kept under wraps though sources say the show isn’t a two-hander. (Netflix also stresses that Golf should be capitalized, though it’s unclear if it’s an acronym.)
Youssef and Rabinowitz, who previously teamed for Hulu’s critically praised comedy Ramy, will serve as showrunners and exec produce Golf alongside Ferrell, Jessica Elbaum and Alix Taylor for Gloria Sanchez Productions. Directing and starring in hit comedies like “Zoolander,” “Tropic Thunder” and “The Cable Guy” (though only a tiny part in the latter), the comedian has reflected on the failure of “Zoolander 2” in a new interview with Fail Better podcast.

It is quite a common occurrence that if a comedian is extremely funny, they have probably dabbled in writing, creating, and directing at some point. While a lot of them see great success through this, there are the rare few who fail miserably and never look that way again. Unfortunately for Ben Stiller, his case was the latter.

Ben Stiller’s Zoolander is an infinitely quotable cult classic among comedy aficionadoes, and a sequel should have been easier to pull off than turning left. Still, the film failed epically, creating a reckoning for Stiller. Speaking with David Duchovny on the actor’s Fail Better podcast, Stiller says he was “blindsided” by the box office bombing of Zoolander 2 after thinking it would surprise fans more than David Bowie’s cameo in the original film.
“I thought everybody wanted this,” Stiller said about the sequel to his 2001 meme-worthy comedy. “And then it’s like, ‘Wow, I must have really f—ed this up. Everybody didn’t go to it. And it’s gotten these horrible reviews.”

Ben Stiller has opened up about the film which turned him onto TV: the controversial comedy Zoolander 2. More below…
With a career packed with some of the most beloved comedies of the 2000s (including the original Zoolander in 2001), it’s safe to say that Zoolander 2 doesn’t find itself gracing many Ben Stiller “best of” lists.
As it turns out, the critical and commercial flop of the modelling industry follow-up came as a bit of a shock for Stiller, as the actor-director reportedly told David Duchovny on an upcoming podcast (per People).
“I thought everybody wanted this,” Stiller said. “And then it’s like, ‘Wow, I must have really fucked this up. Everybody didn’t go to it. And it’s gotten these horrible reviews.'”
Critics and audiences alike rejected the 2016 sequel, which debuted to pretty sniffy reviews and grossed just $56.7m off a $50-55m budget.

An intriguing creative duo are in line to collaborate on The Seven Five, a crime drama that could mark Ben Stiller’s return to film directing.
According to Jeff Sneider (via World Of Reel), Ben Stiller has signed up to helm The Seven Five, a crime drama that will be ‘set in the 1980s in New York City. The story’s about a corrupt police precinct and its ringleader, Michael Dowd, who was arrested in 1987 with a handful of other dirty cops who stole money and drugs. He served 14 years in prison, and his arrest exposed widespread corruption within the NYPD.’
It sounds intriguing, right? Add to this the talents of The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White in the lead role and you could have something special. Allen White was exceptional in last year’s The Iron Claw and his work in TV’s The Bear is no less remarkable.

Kevin Macdonald’s finely balanced portrait of the disgraced Dior designer, on Mubi from Friday, is the newest arrival on a catwalk of fashion industry movies, from Funny Face to Zoolander
For those who bleat on about the iniquities of supposed “cancel culture”, the career of British fashion designer John Galliano is a useful counterpoint. Sacked in 2011 as the creative director of Christian Dior after an appalling incident of antisemitic abuse on his part, he spent two years in the wilderness before being hired by Oscar de la Renta and subsequently Maison Margiela, where he has been for a decade. A-listers still wear his gowns on red carpets. Life goes on. Kevin Macdonald’s documentary High & Low: John Galliano (streaming on Mubi from 26 April) chronicles Galliano’s rise and fall and rise with a more distanced, critical eye than you may expect from a film co-produced by Vogue publisher Condé Nast.

sex tape, 2004’s cleverly-titled 1 Night in Paris. “That’s Hot.” As with Kim Kardashian, questions remain even decades later about whether the video was released intentionally to capitalize on her growing fame. For her part, Paris has since denied consenting to the video’s release and has settled out-of-court for the damage to her image and reputation. Perhaps the grossest thing about the video (bear with me) is that it opens with a title card that says “In memory of 9/11/01… We will never forget.” Seriously.

So what can be said about Andy Dick that the paparazzi and nearly every Judge from West Virginia to Los Angeles hasn’t already said? Yeah, I don’t know how else to say this other than: Wtf Happened to Andy Dick?!
But as always we must begin at the beginning and the beginning began on his birthday, December 21, 1965 in Charleston, South Carolina. After graduating high school in the suburbs of Illinois, Andy would study at the famed Second City and...
