In 1934, the inimitable Bette Davis appeared in a film adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham's "Of Human Bondage," a semi-autobiographical novel about the unfortunate loves of one Philip Carey. The 1934 film was directed by the prolific John Cromwell and starred Leslie Howard as Philip. Davis played Mildred Rogers, a tearoom waitress that Philip falls in love with, but who treats him with the utmost cruelty. It was a great role for Davis, who was only 26 at the time.

Veteran stage actor Julien Arnold died suddenly Sunday, Nov. 24, midway through a performance of A Christmas Carol, after experiencing a medical emergency. He passed after collapsing onstage during an evening performance of the stage production at the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, according to the theatre.

The cause of death has not been announced. CBC News reported that he died at the theater “despite resuscitation attempts” from paramedics, according to a spokesperson for Alberta Health Services. He was 60, the Edmonton Journal reported.

The theatre announced Arnold’s death in a statement on Instagram.

Barbara Leigh-Hunt, the Olivier Award-winning actress who portrayed one of the victims of Barry Foster’s Necktie Murderer in Alfred Hitchcock’s penultimate film, Frenzy, has died. She was 88.

Leigh-Hunt died peacefully Sept. 16 at her home in Warwickshire, England, her family announced.

The British star also was known for her performance as Lady Catherine de Bourgh in the acclaimed 1995 BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle.

During her seven-decade career, Leigh-Hunt appeared for the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre, in the West End and on Broadway. She received her Olivier in 1993 for her turn as Sybil Birling in an Nt revival of J.B. Priestley’s An Inspector Calls, directed by Stephen Daldry.

In Frenzy (1972), filmed in London, Leigh-Hunt portrayed Brenda Blaney, the ex-wife of a struggling former Raf squadron leader (Jon Finch), who police at first think is the serial killer on the loose.

In the third major shake-up of leadership in New York’s non-profit theater world in recent months, the Roundabout Theatre Company has announced that Tony Award-winning director Christopher Ashley will become its Artistic Director in July 2026 for the 2027-28 season.

Ashley, the Artistic Director for 17 years in a celebrated run at La Jolla Playhouse in California, will collaborate with Scott Ellis, Roundabout’s Interim Artistic Director, for the 2026-27 season while Ashley honors his previous commitment with La Jolla. Hill died in the early hours of Sunday morning, a statement from his family said. No cause was given. His fiancée Alison and his son Gabriel were at his side.

Hill’s breakout role occurred on the BBC miniseries Boys From the Blackstuff, in which he portrayed Yosser Hughes, a man struggling with unemployment in Liverpool whose “gizza job” catchphrase was known across England. The show aired in 1983 and won a BAFTA for best drama series that year.

Emerald Fennell's sophomore feature, "Saltburn," plays like a gothic romance. There's sex, there's intrigue, and eventually things turn to murder. As our own Jacob Hall said in his review, "it's one of the bleakest films of 2023, and a real bad time at the movies."

For the last five years, January has meant one thing to the cast of Ghosts: trundling over to West Horsley Place in Surrey to film the next series. Not in 2024. The BBC comedy’s final episode is set to air this Christmas, and after that, what do this in-demand lot have planned?

As you may know, Kenneth Branagh, an excellent actor and film and theater director, has taken it upon himself to revive Agatha Christie and portray her iconic detective, Hercule Poirot. He skillfully blends classic novel elements with a distinct, visually striking cinematic style.

In our opinion, this is the most accomplished adaptation on a cinematographic level. The atmosphere and story lend themselves to elaborate compositions and chiaroscuro effects.

Branagh’s adaptations of Agatha Christie’s works are, without a doubt, the finest ones to date. Whether you enjoy this kind of mystery and intrigue or not is a different matter.

Garth Craven, the British-born sound and film editor and second-unit director whose credits included six Sam Peckinpah features, as well as Turner and Hooch, My Best Friend’s Wedding and Legally Blonde, has died. He was 84.

A resident of Malibu, Craven died May 20 after he suffered a medical emergency while flying back to Los Angeles from a safari in Namibia, his daughter, Willow Kalatchi, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Craven collaborated with the maverick director Peckinpah on Straw Dogs (1971), The Getaway (1972), Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (1973), Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974), The Killer Elite (1975) and Convoy (1978).

He worked with fellow editor Roger Spottiswoode on the first three of those films, and when Spottiswoode graduated to director, they partnered on the features Shoot to Kill (1988), Turner and Hooch (1989) and Air America (1990) and on two HBO telefilms: 1989’s Third Degree Burn and 1993’s And the Band Played On.

Film and sound editor Garth Craven, who edited films including “Legally Blonde” and got his start in film editing with Sam Peckinpah’s “Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid,” died May 20 in Barcelona. He was 84.

His death was only recently announced by his daughter Willow.

Craven not only worked in the cutting room but also in sound departments and served as second unit director on several films. At the beginning of his career, Craven worked on Federico Fellini’s fantasy drama “Satyricon” (1969) in the sound editing department, which served as his introduction to filmmaking.

Back in England, he continued working on films in London. Resuming his work in the sound department, Craven received a BAFTA for the critically acclaimed romantic drama “The Go-Between” (1971) directed by Joseph Losey.

Ncuti Gatwa will take on a starring role in the BBC’s celebrations for King Charles III’s coronation.

The Doctor Who actor will perform excerpts from a William Shakespeare play at the Coronation Concert on May 7 as part of a collaboration between the Royal Shakespeare Company and other arts bodies.

The BBC did not confirm which Shakespeare play will be brought to life by Gatwa, but he has previously played Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet at Home Theatre Manchester and Demetrius in A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Shakespeare’s Globe.

Throughout the final season of "Star Trek: Picard," Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) is a man of surprisingly few words. Sure, the beloved retired captain chimes in with theories during the show's many exposition-heavy scenes, and has a few heart-to-hearts with his son Jack (Ed Speleers) and old pal Riker (Jonathan Frakes), but he's decidedly light on leaderly monologues. Picard is even fairly reticent when he's saying what may be one final goodbye to his crewmates, simply saying, "It means so much to me --" to Riker before parting ways.

I'll admit that moment in the finale had me yelling at the screen, hoping Picard would get the chance to say something, anything, that felt like a signature "Star Trek" sign-off before bowing out. I should've known the show was saving the best for last, and by best, I...

What dreams may come... 

Season 1 of Netflix's "The Sandman" wasn't quite the great Neil Gaiman adaptation some of the storyteller's fans have been waiting for. It nevertheless set the series (which is far from strictly a fantasy drama) on the path to becoming the next best thing to reading Gaiman's original comics. That it was able to stay faithful to the spirit of its source material while including some welcome modifications -- some of which, admittedly, were more superficial than others in the way they modernize the "Sandman" universe -- is all the more reason to remain hopeful about the show's future.

Of course, it also helps that Gaiman's earlier "Sandman" comic books (which formed the basis of season 1) are generally agreed to be the weakest of the lot, compared to what comes after. With the best of the saga of Morpheus still on the horizon, fans have been...
