As the past few months have proven, AI is becoming an increasingly controversial topic both inside the film industry and without. As companies like OpenAI talk excitedly about the next generation of Artificial Intelligence replacing millions of jobs over the coming years, Oscar hopeful The Brutalist has sparked a backlash over its use of AI to adjust its actors’ performances.
The consternation has been such that the Academy is reportedly thinking about making it mandatory for filmmakers to disclose their use of AI when submitting their movies. The film industry, in essence, is racing to keep up with an area of technology that has only risen...

David Soul died on January 4th at the age of 80. The actor was best known for playing Detective Kenneth “Hutch” Hutchinson on Starsky & Hutch alongside Paul Michael Glaser.
Although Starsky & Hutch would become one of the most iconic shows of the ’70s, Soul and Glaser had no clue it would become as successful as it did. “We didn’t have a clue it was going to be so successful.

Naysayers be damned. The mainstream film industry may be on its last legs but the cinematic art form is alive and well. I enjoyed so many films this year I actually have two top-ten lists that are largely interchangeable. If you want to hear my other ten, feel free to check out the end of year review on my podcast The Cinematologists. Following on from last year’s approach, here are my ten for Dn. All ten were released in UK cinemas (or debuted on streaming) in 2024 and are listed here alphabetically.
Honourable mentions: The Delinquents, Sky Peals, The Holdovers, The Settlers, Sometimes I Think About Dying
10. Adam Sandler: Love You | Josh Safdie
The last two Sandler specials for Netflix have been wonderful. I admire his commitment to being silly, and sentimental. In a world as messy as this, there needs to be places for silliness, and there are...

You have three seconds to name Wesley Snipes’ best ‘90s action movie: Go! As the numbers tally, only six options remain: New Jack City, Passenger 57, Boiling Point, Rising Sun, Demolition Man, and Blade. If we’re talking crime-action, New Jack City reigns supreme. Horror-Action? Blade all damn day. Sci-Fi Action? Demolition Man is too silly to miss. But if we’re simply counting hyper-violent, hard-boiled action fare – it’s hard to elevate above Passenger 57 – a lean, mean, bullet-laced blitzkrieg of thrilling throwback action made in the wake of Die Hard. In the film, Snipes portrays John Cutter, a badass airport security expert who finds himself in a hijacked airliner overrun by Charles “The Rane of Terror” Rane and his undercover henchmen.
Despite overtly adopting the Die Hard formula of isolating a grumpy, charismatic hero in a single location and pitting them against a troupe of gun-toting terrorists, Passenger 57...

The 1990s had plenty of action movie superstars, although many of this era's most notable heroes had lots of movies that have been hugely underrated. While this decade was categorized by major franchises as legendary sequels like Terminator 2 or the dawning of revolutionary series such as The Matrix dominated the conversation, those willing to dig below the surface will be rewarded with incredible hidden gems. As the 1980s stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone continued to hit big at the box office, this was also the heyday for new heroes like Nicolas Cage, Steven Seagal, and Wesley Snipes.
The biggest action movie stars of the 1990s all had several underrated releases that have failed to maintain the same kind of pop culture dominance as their most acclaimed work. This was a real shame, as many of these movies were packed with heart-racing action sequences and spectacular big-budget set...

Wayne's World breakout star, Tia Carrere, has had an illustrious career since starring in the 1992 comedy. Waynes World follows Wayne and his best friend Garth, as they host a popular TV show in his basement that gets noticed by a TV network executive. Waynes World was a huge success when it premiered. The movie, which only had a budget of $20 million, ended up being a huge success and making $183.1 million at the box office (via Box Office Mojo). The sequel, however, Waynes World 2, did not perform as well as the first movie.
Carrere, who played Cassandra Wong in the classic movie has amassed over 100 credits since she began her career. Since landing her first role in Aloha Summer, Carrere has appeared in several movies and TV shows, including General Hospital, Airwolf, and The A-Team. With the passing of Donald Sutherland, I was looking through his catalogue for stuff I hadn’t seen yet as I like to look at the entire catalogue to find some hidden gems. What I was reminded of while looking was his stellar horror output over the years. Fallen, The Puppet Masters, Don’t Look Now, Virus, the Salem’s Lot TV miniseries, and of course Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors are all fun to great but for my money, his turn in Invasion of the Body Snatchers (watch it Here) and really the movie in general, is his best stuff. After buying the wonderful 4K from Kino Lorber and rewatching it, I’m also ready to crown it as the best San Francisco based horror movie too. While it can feel every bit as long as it’s 1 hour and 55-minute runtime, it uses that slow build tension to...

An old adage reminds us that “character is what you do when no one is watching.” Steve Buscemi, the acclaimed actor, exemplified this maxim on September 11, 2001, when he reported to Ground Zero and worked with his old unit, Engine Company 55, in Manhattan. Without fanfare, press conferences, or public declarations, Buscemi worked alongside other firefighters in the aftermath of the attacks. It was only later, through chance encounters and quiet disclosures, that the public learned of his selfless actions that day. And so, it’s fitting that Buscemi, a man of character, is best known for his work as a character actor – bringing depth, nuance, and complexity to the roles he’s played on screen, just as he brought courage, compassion, and humility to his work on and after that fateful day.
But how was that courage formed? To know that, we must return to where the beginning began, when he was born On His Birthday,...

Sometimes your entire world can change in a single moment. For a young Tia Carrere’s world became more excellent one trip a local grocery store where the parents of a man who was producing a movie saw her and told her about this movie their son was shooting. This would lead Tia Carrere to land a role in the film Aloha Summer. She says she was super nervous because she had never acted before and hadn’t even thought of it as an option in her life but she did it! Ms Carrere grew up wanting to be a singer…. and she did that too!
After rocking everyone’s world in the Wayne’s World cinematic universe film franchise, Tia Carrere became a household name in the early nineties while also standing toe to toe with some of the biggest names in the business. But after a few bad turns...

Tony Ganios, the actor who made his film debut in Philip Kaufman’s 1979 coming-of-age comedy-drama The Wanderers and played audience favorite Anthony ‘Meat’ Tuperello in the 1980s Porky’s sex comedy franchise, died Sunday following surgery at a hospital in New York. He was 64.
His death was announced on social media by his fiancée, Amanda Serrano-Ganios, who said that the actor fell ill last week, was hospitalized Saturday with a spinal cord infection, and passed away Sunday of heart failure.

While Killer Soup follows the story of Swathi, a woman who wants to start her own restaurant, I believe there are many parallels between her and Appu’s story. Yes, it’s a murder mystery where a dozen people die all around Swathi, seemingly just by existing near her. It’s also about her passionate ambition to open this restaurant that she’s been dreaming of for years. In an ideal world, by the time we get to the timeline of the show, Swathi should’ve been well into running her restaurant, seeing as she had been married for 20 years and her husband is the reason she’s come into money and luxury. While he claims he’s given her everything she’s ever wanted, he’s never bothered helping her achieve her biggest dream (waste fellow). Now Appu is Arvind’s daughter. We can assume she’s at least 25 years younger than Swathi,...

It’s been 20 years since actress Tia Carrere walked the red carpet for a starring role. That was for Disney’s “Lilo and Stitch,” in which she voiced Nani Peleka. Tonight, she gets to do it for Universal’s “Easter Sunday.”
Carrere plays Tita Teresa in Jo Koy’s film about a family coming together on Easter Sunday, which features an all-Filipino cast. She calls playing Koy’s aunt in the film a “dream role.” After four decades in the industry, Carrere, who starred in “Waynes World,” “True Lies” and “Rising Sun,” has nonetheless faced her fair share of rejection for roles because she was considered too “ethnic” or “exotic.”
Carrere sat down with Variety to talk about why Tita Teresa is a first for her and what’s in store for her next music album.
Has it really been 20 years since your last red carpet?

Produced by Cinco Da Norte and Terratreme with Pimenta once again behind the camera, the duo returns to their portrayal of the inhabitants of Ceilandia, a district on the periphery of Brasilia which has been a recurring subject in both filmmakers work. The film follows sisters Chitarra and Léa, leaders of an all female gang who refines oil drawn from an oil pipeline to sell to motor bikers in the Sol Nascente favela.

Mainstream American cinema has a complicated relationship with sex, simultaneously leering and puritanical. Decades after the downfall of the Hays Code, Hollywood as a whole still struggles with honest and fully layered portrayals of human sexuality. The powerful combination of statewide and local censorship boards, the industry's own self-regulation efforts, and decades long social movements by conservative pressure groups helped to drastically change our cinematic understanding of sex. As Kirby Dick argued in his 2006 documentary This Film Is Not Yet Rated, ratings boards tend to be far tougher on sex and nudity than scenes of blood-stained massacres in action movies. Even erotic films suffer under this system, with Fifty Shades of Grey, a movie built entirely around its sexual content, being pre-emptively toned down by its studio to avoid the dreaded Nc-17 rating. The end of the Code in the mid-1960s saw greater creative freedom in regards to the...

New Delhi, Oct 31 (Ians) For a man who redefined the spy as a playboy and an action star with his James Bond roles, Sean Connery had once surprised the world declaring he was no great fan of the British superspy.
"I've only read two Bond books, I found Ian Fleming himself much more interesting than his writing," Connery had stated, in an article that The Guardian ran in December 1971.
That was the era when Connery ruled the mindset of Hollywood fans the world over with his back-to-back hits as Agent 007. It was almost a decade since his first bow, "Dr No", created global impact upon release in 1962. By December 1971 Connery had already starred in four other Bond blockbusters that continue to define the original essence of Bond -- "From Russia With Love" (1963), "Goldfinger" (1964), "Thunderball" (1965), and "You Only Live Twice" (1967). Update, September 22: Martin Scorsese, a frequent collaborator of Chapman’s, has issued the following statement following the cinematographer’s passing: “I consider myself so fortunate to have been able to work with Michael Chapman. Michael and I made three films together—’Taxi Driver,’ ‘The Last Waltz,’ and ‘Raging Bull,’ and he brought something rare and irreplaceable to each of them.”
Scorsese continues, “I remember when ‘Taxi Driver’ came out and Michael became known as a ‘poet of the streets’—I think that was the wording, and it seemed right to me. Michael was the one who really controlled the visual palette of ‘The Last Waltz,’ and on ‘Raging Bull’ he and his team met every single challenge—and there were so many. One of the greatest of those challenges was shooting in black and white, which Michael had never done before, a fact that still astonishes me. His relationship...

Here's what's new on Netflix in March 2020! We've got a complete list of what's leaving, too.
Normally the big story for each month of Netflix new releases are the exciting batch of Netflix original series and movies arriving. For Netflix's new releases for March 2020, things are a little bit different. Yes, there are some cool originals here but...look at those movies!
March 1 sees the arrival of Corpse Bride, The Shawshank Redemption, There Will Be Blood, and Goodfellas! Martin Scorsese likely can't unilaterally decide when and where his movies stream, but it is a happy coincidence that Goodfellas will now exist alongside The Irishman.
As for those Netflix originals...Ozark is the biggest returning hit in March. The story of a very corrupt family airs its third season on March 27. Also of note are Castlevania season 3 (March 5), Altered Carbon: Resleeved (March 19). But really after Goodfellas, nothing else was really necessary.

Netflix is out with its list of everything coming and going in March, and highlights include “Ozark” Season 3, coming March 27, and the Brazilian version of the popular reality competition “The Circle,” coming March 11.
There’s good news and bad news. The good news is we’re gaining some beloved mid-2000s films, like “He’s Just Not That Into You,” “Valentine’s Day” and “Silver Linings Playbook,” “Corpse Bride” and “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events,” plus some ’90s favorites like “Space Jam” and “GoodFellas.”
The bad news is that throughout the month we’re losing “Black Panther,” “Eat Pray Love,” “The Waterboy,” “P.S. I Love You,” “Batman Begins,” both “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” and “The Two Towers,” and “Kill Bill” Volumes 1 and 2.

A hypnotic homage serving as part-travelogue, part visionary curation of Catalan architect Antonio Gaudi’s (1852-1926) masterworks in Barcelona, Japanese auteur Hiroshi Teshigahara’s 1984 documentary on the artist will reveal little about either its subject or its director beyond the latter’s loving penchant for the former’s achievements. Gaudi, a founder of Catalan Modernism and eventually what became known as the Modernista movement, is the creator of, among many idiosyncratic structures, Spain’s most visited touristic attraction, the unfinished church of the Sagrada Familia (a visual exploration of which is where Teshigahara’s film ends). A beautiful rendering of Barcelona’s exceptional landscapes, the trance-like documentary is enhanced by an exceptional, often moody score from Shinji Hori, Kuroda Mori and Toru Takemitsu (who scored Teshigahara’s 1964 masterpiece Woman in the Dunes (read review) as well as Kurosawa’s 1985 Ran and the Philip Kaufman feature Rising Sun, 1993).…

When it comes to big, flashy area control games that follow a huge Kickstarter, Cmon are without doubt the most prolific publisher. Keen to follow on from the success of games like Blood Rage and Rising Sun, with perhaps more than a dash of Gamelyn Games’ Heroes of Land, Air and Sea, is Clash of Rage from french publisher Laboite De Jeu. This gorgeous game comes in a massive box that is bursting with miniatures, but is it all style over substance, or is there a proper game here? Let me tell you all about it.
Like so many other games of its kind, Clash of Rage does sell, to some extent, on the weight of its excellent miniatures and huge presence. The box may be massive, but it’s justifiable when you see the contents. Four highly individual clans feature, each of them with a host of small, medium and large sized miniatures.
