Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz are two of the most enduring children’s fantasy books of the past 160 years. The two stories have been compared to each other numerous times. However, Alice in Wonderland is the far better book for multiple reasons.
‘The Wizard of Oz’ wouldn’t be the same without ‘Alice in Wonderland’
Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and its sequel, Through the Looking-Glass, had an immense impact on the fantasy genre. It led to many imitations and popularized the trope of small children going to another world and coming back. Who knows if we would have J. M. Barrie’s Peter Pan, C.S. Lewis’ Narnia books, or Jim Henson’s Labyrinth without it?
The most famous book inspired by Alice in Wonderland is L. Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz. According to The Annotated Wizard of Oz, Baum was a fan...

Bryn Chainey’s “Rabbit Trap,” starring Dev Patel, Rosy McEwen, and Jade Croot, is a three-hander folk horror deeply rooted in Welsh lore and the precarious balance between humans and the natural world. It concerns a couple (Patel and McEwen) living in a remote cottage who suddenly have a strange child (Croot) burrowing into their lives after they disturb a Tylwyth Teg fairy ring.
“You might try to bury something, but something, it’ll grow,” Chainey said of the traumas lurking at the fringes of the new Midnight section thriller. “I grew up loving the illustrations of Brian Froud. He’s the guy that designed ‘The Dark Crystal’ and ‘Labyrinth,’ and he wrote these amazing books about fairies and goblins and pixies, all the folklore of the Celtic part of the U.K.”
“For me as a kid, these things were real, they were just an extension of nature,” Chainey continued.

The Midnight strand at the Sundance Film Festival has come into its own in the last few years, showcasing films that push the increasingly conservative boundaries of genre. One of this year’s offerings — the U.K.-shot Rabbit Trap, written and directed by Bryn Chainey — did that a little too successfully for some. Drawing on ancient folklore, fables and myths, Chainey’s film was branded a ‘folk horror’, a promise the film could not live up to.
Though it is certainly disturbing at times, Rabbit Trap is hard to describe and even harder to put a category to, which is appropriate since the whole film is trying to talk about things that cannot be put into words. It stars Dev Patel as Darcy, who works as a sound engineer for his wife Daphne (Rosy McEwan), who makes experimental music at their home in a remote Welsh cottage. The year...

The feeling of watching the film Rabbit Trap is one that is comparable perhaps only to the first time you hear your favorite song through a pair of actually good headphones. What was once a familiar old friend, is now something new, something different. Where once only silence was heard, now new frequencies and new sonic pathways open up from places that always dwelled under the surface, yet until now had never been accessible to you. Yes, this film is quite a bit like that.
Rabbit Trap is the story of Daphne (Rosy McEwan), an analog synth obsessed avant-garde musician, and her husband, Darcy (Dev Patel), a introverted sound designer who spends his days lugging his audio equipment into the forest to record the sounds of nature at work. Seeking to immerse themselves in both their art and their relationship, the couple decides to sequester themselves in a scaredy populated forest home in Wales.

People just vibing, not a cell phone in sight…You just can’t have a modern movie without technology playing a factor in the story. And so Robert Eggers won’t, saying he has no intention of ever making a movie set in the present day.
Robert Eggers recently spoke with Rotten Tomatoes about his clear passion for period pieces and if he would ever do something more modern. “The idea of having to photograph a car makes me ill. And the idea of photographing a cellphone is just death. And to make a contemporary story you have to photograph a cellphone, it’s just how life is, so no…” He added that the the most recent he thinks he would go would be the 1950s, but he thinks capping it before World War II would be his true limit.

Robert Eggers has claimed the idea of making a contemporary movie makes him "ill".The 41-year-old filmmaker, whose previous works have covered New England in the 1630s and 1890s, with 'The Witch' and 'The Lighthouse' respectively, the Viking era with 'The Northman' and 1830s Transylvania with latest offering 'Nosferatu', can't bear the idea of having to film modern inventions such as cars and mobile phones. He told Rotten Tomatoes: “The idea of having to photograph a car makes me ill. “And the idea of photographing a cellphone is just death. Robert Eggers has zero plans to make contemporary movies, featuring modern-day inventions and technology.
The Nosferatu director recently told Rotten Tomatoes that the idea of making such projects makes him feel “ill.”
“The idea of having to photograph a car makes me ill,” Eggers said. “And the idea of photographing a cellphone is just death. And to make a contemporary story you have to photograph a cellphone — it’s just how life is — so no [I won’t be making any modern-set films].”
The filmmaker has helmed several projects that have spanned periods from 1630s and 1890s New England to the Viking Era, including 2015’s The Witch, 2019’s The Lighthouse and 2022’s The Northman, respectively. Most recently, Nosferatu, starring Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult and Bill Skarsgård, was set in 1830s Transylvania.
Elsewhere in the interview, Eggers was asked exactly how modern he would potentially go for a project. He responded, “I don’t know. I might go potentially...

Never say never, but Nosferatu filmmaker Robert Eggers is pretty much dead-set on not making a contemporary movie.
The auteur — whose pics have spanned 1630’s and 1890’s New England, the Viking Era (2022’s The Northman) and now 1830’s Transylvania (four-time Oscar-nominated Nosferatu) — said in a recent interview with Rotten Tomatoes that the thought of such a project makes him feel “ill.”

When asked to specify the “ceiling” of which time periods Eggers would fancy traveling to, he answered: “I don’t know. I might go potentially to 1950 but before World War II is more inviting for my imagination.”

It has been a full couple of weeks for Robert Eggers. Nosferatu, his Gothic remake of the 1922 classic, is leading the box office with $156 million so far. A few days ago, cinephiles got word that he's staying in the Universal monster motif with Werwulf coming next. (No relation with the foible-ridden "Dark Universe.")
Now comes the announcement that the cerebral moviemaker is going to make a sequel to the 1986 cult classic Labyrinth. The film starred the wit and whimsy of Jim Henson, who created a compelling story and fascinating puppets for a fantasy world featuring Ziggy Stardust himself, David Bowie.
Eggers signed on to direct and co-write with his creative partner Sjón, with whom he collaborated on The Northman. Variety reported Chris and Eleanor Columbus are slated to produce the film with Lisa Henson. Also along for the ride is Jim's son, Brian Henson, who will be executive producing.

Robert Eggers is one of the few directors left in Hollywood making a name for themselves under the old auteur model, where people become interested in their movies because they made them, not because they're tied to some already-established IP. Between The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman and now Nosferatu, Eggers has forged his own path and actually succeeded. It's pretty much him and Christopher Nolan holding that particular fort.
And Eggers will continue to blaze new trails with a new movie called Werwulf. He's already covered witches and vampires, so this seems like the next natural step. But Deadline reports that he's signed on to make a sequel to Labyrinth, the 1986 dark fantasy movie starring Jennifer Connelly, David Bowie, and a bunch of Jim Henson puppets.

Jeff Sneider recently reported that Nosferatu director Robert Eggers was set to helm a new Labyrinth movie, and while some were quick to dismiss the rumor, it's now been confirmed.

According to Deadline, Eggers is also set to write the project with frequent collaborator Sjón for TriStar. Producers will include Lisa Henson, Chris Columbus, and Eleanor Columbus, while Brian Henson will executive produce.

Robert Eggers will tackle the long awaited Labyrinth 2, and it’s now been announced. A bit more information here.

Thanks to Robert Eggers' vampire film "Nosferatu" and Coralie Fargeat's "The Substance," horror had a surprisingly strong showing at the 2025 Oscar nominations. But instead of resting on his laurels and high-fiving Bill Skarsgård for delivering a gruesomely fresh take on the horror icon Count Orlok, Eggers has already set his sights on a new movie, the excellently-named 13th century werewolf tale "Werwulf." Oh, and if that wasn't enough to keep him working for a while, Deadline reports that he's also now closed a deal with TriStar pictures to co-write and direct a sequel to "Labyrinth."
The original 1986 "Labyrinth" is a marvel. He's conquered the realms of witches (The Witch), vampires (Nosferatu), and very soon will have taken a 13th century set stab at werewolves too (Werwulf), but emerging master of the macabre Robert Eggers has already decided where his watchful eye will be cast next — and we'll bet it's not somewhere you had on your Eggers bingo card. Hot on the heels of scoring four Oscar nominations for his take on F.W. Robert Eggers reminds me of the babe. What babe? The babe with the power to finally, at long last, bring a sequel to Jim Henson‘s Labyrinth into the world! Robert Eggers is getting very busy. A day after setting up his next film, “Werwulf,” at Focus Features, the director of “Nosferatu” and “The Northman” has closed a deal with TriStar Pictures to direct a sequel to “Labyrinth.”
Released in 1986, “Labyrinth” starred Jennifer Connolly as a teen who, frustrated with taking care of her infant half-brother, wishes for him to be taken away by the goblins in a fantasy book she is reading. Her rash wish is granted by the Goblin King Jareth, played by David Bowie, who gives her 13 hours to find her brother in a magical labyrinth before he is turned into a goblin forever.
Initially a box office dud with $34 million grossed against a $25 million budget, “Labyrinth” became a cult classic thanks to Bowie’s performance and the intricate puppet creatures created by director Jim Henson and his team. Details on the sequel’s plot are being kept under wraps.

The news comes following the unveiling of the 2025 Oscar nominations, which included four for Eggers’ hit vampire flick in the Cinematography, Costume Design, Production Design and Makeup and Hairstyling categories.
Plot details for Eggers’ Labyrinth are under wraps, but we’re told the film is a sequel to, rather than a remake of, Jim Henson’s 1986 classic. Eggers is writing the script with Sjón, his collaborator on 2022 Viking actioner The Northman and with whom he’s also working on Werwulf. Chris and Eleanor Columbus will produce alongside Lisa Henson, with Brian Henson executive producing.

Air Force One, the quintessential late ’90s action thriller, remains a beloved classic. Directed by Wolfgang Petersen, the film flaunts a stellar cast including Harrison Ford as the heroic U.S. President, Gary Oldman as the ruthless villain, and Glenn Close as the Veep.

Despite its moments of cheesy dialogue, the movie is a visual treat, blending high-stakes action with a whole lot of patriotism. And now, almost three decades later, a sequel might just be taking flight, thanks to Ford still being a total force of nature!
Could Harrison Ford’s Air Force One be taking flight again?

A new version of Pokémon Monopoly has just hit the tabletop, but it's surprisingly not just a copy and paste of the classic Monopoly game. Despite being one of the biggest media franchises ever, Pokémon has surprisingly few tabletop games outside the ever-growing Pokémon Trading Card Game. While Pokémon fans growing up in the 1990s may remember Pokémon Master Trainer, most recent Pokémon board games have simply been licensed versions of popular games like Labyrinth and Guess Who?
Earlier this month, Hasbro Gaming released a new version of Pokémon Monopoly. While two previous licensed editions of Monopoly were made using Pokémon, this new Monopoly game features several new mechanics that make the game feel very different from a simple Monopoly re-skin. The result is a different kind of Pokémon tabletop game, one that actually tries to capture the feel of the Pokémon franchise instead of just being a simple cash grab.

The official YouTube channel for the three-piece Japanese rock band hockrockb is now streaming a music video for their latest digital single song "Labyrinth." The song released digitally on October 16, 2024, and was featured as the ending theme for the second season of the Ron Kamonohashi's Forbidden Deductions TV anime. This was the second time that the band had provided a song for the anime series, following the first season's ending theme "Lipsync." Newly written by the band as the ending song for the anime, “Labyrinth” is a song about the labyrinth that exists in everyone's head, with a mix of serious and comical elements, which is inspired by the anime's worldview. In the music video, Ageha Horii is shown wandering through the labyrinth in her head and trying to find her way to the future by holding on to the rope that serves as a guidepost. hockrockb "Labyrinth" Music Video...

2026 will mark the 40th anniversary of the release of the musical fantasy film Labyrinth… and if all goes well, we might be able to celebrate the anniversary with a new film that’s set in the world of the original film. Such a project has been making its way through development hell for several years, and now Jeff Sneider of The InSneider has revealed that he has heard that The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman, and Nosferatu writer/director Robert Eggers has closed a deal to co-write and direct the new Labyrinth film!
This project first started moving forward in 2016, when Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel writer Nicole Perlman signed on to write the screenplay. Fede Álvarez (Alien: Romulus) was hired to direct the film in 2017, and he wrote his own draft of the script with Jay Basu. The script was complete by October 2018… but the project didn’t go into production,...

A lot of people regard Jim Henson’s Labyrinth as an untouchable 80s classic and feel it could never be made today. I guess Sony is going to try. According to some outside reports, Sony has hired Robert Eggers, the man behind the recent Nosferatu movie, to look into developing a Labyrinth remake. Since this guy’s bread and butter is the grungy horror genre (he also made The Witch and The Northman), there’s reason to hope he won’t sand the edges down, however, remakes rarely turn out as good as the originals. The original Labyrinth is about Sarah (Jennifer Connelly), who has a new baby brother she hates. She’s been saddled with babysitting him and she hates that too! She despises him so much she wishes the goblins would take him away. Upon saying those words, Jareth The Goblin King whooshes through her window to do just that.

Robert Eggers'... Labyrinth?
Back in 2020, we got word that Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson had signed on to helm a sequel to Jim Henson's fantasy classic for Sony-owned studio TriStar Pictures.
Updates have pretty much been non-existent since, and we're now hearing that another filmmaker is set to direct the project.
Whether the movie is still being developed as a direct sequel or a remake/reboot/reimagining is not clear, but Jeff Sneider is reporting that none other than Robert Eggers is set to write and direct a new Labyrinth film for Sony and the Jim Henson Company.
This may not seem like the type of project Eggers would be interested in, but the original Labyrinth does have some horror elements, and there's always a chance the studio has given him a bit of leeway to take the story in a slightly darker direction.

Warning: This post contains Spoilers for What If...? season 3For all the success of the MCU era, there have been some dark days in Marvel's comic book movie past, and one of them just took an even darker turn thanks to the last major superhero release of 2024. Prior to the MCU, there were several attempts to adapt Marvel Comics, from the early age of serials, with 1940s adaptations for both Captain Marvel and Captain America through to the weirdness of the late 1970s Spider-Man and Captain America movies.
But it wasn't until the 1980s that studios started throwing real money behind Marvel rights, well before Sam Raimi's Spider-Man and the original X-Men movies changed everything. It's something of a forgotten period for Marvel, but in 1986, George Lucas threatened to ruin the good name of Marvel with a movie so terrible that it belongs in a museum. I never thought I'd be writing this,...

Jennifer Connelly started acting at age 12 will a small part in Sergio Leone’s “Once Upon A Time In America” (1984). She achieved mainstream success in Jim Henson’s “Labyrinth” (1985), and shortly after graduated to more adult roles. However, due to her stunning looks she was often relegated to play either the hero’s girlfriend or the main character’s mistress.
She wouldn’t receive widespread critical recognition until “Requiem For A Dream” (2000) and “A Beautiful Mind” (2001), the latter of which would earn her an Oscar, Golden Globe, BAFTA and Critics Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress. While Connelly is still often called upon to play the romantic interest, she has proven herself to be talented and versatile enough to make those characters more complicated.
In addition to her Oscar, Globe and BAFTA success, Connelly earned SAG bids for “A Beautiful Mind” (Actress and Ensemble), an additional Critics Choice nomination for...

An awesome new artwork allows Wonder Woman to shine like a true '80s icon with a variant cover in the style of a poster for an old-school power fantasy. Diana has had a lot of amazing adaptations over the years, but this cover makes one pine for a long-gone cinematic era.
As 2024 winds down, fans are getting a peek at what lies ahead in the new year thanks to DC Comics' batch of solicitations for February 2024. The month is full of exciting new offerings, including the revival of Green Lantern Corps. But Wonder Woman fans are going to want to check out this month's variants, including one by David Talaski.
Talaski's cover shows Wonder Woman standing confidently against a black background. She's backlit and glowing as her Bracelets of Submission gleam and her Lasso of Truth shines in the darkness, a tableau not unlike posters from '80s action movies.

As we’ve previously mentioned, there’s currently a GoFundMe campaign to raise money to build a statue honoring late Monty Python member Terry Jones in his hometown of Colwyn Bay, Wales. In a rare moment of agreement, all the surviving Pythons have thrown their support behind the project, dubbed “A Python on the Prom,” which will possibly result in a detailed bronze replica of Jones playing the organ while completely naked.
The campaign has, at the time of writing, raised 83 percent of its goal, but organizers are hoping to make up the difference with a new exhibition celebrating Jones’ life. “The Life of Terry” will open in Colwyn Bay on December 12th, with all proceeds going toward the statue fundraiser. The exhibit will reportedly feature more than 100 items that have been loaned by Jones’ family and the Monty Python archive.

Children's live-action fantasy movies are some of the most popular within the genre among audiences of all ages. Just because a film is meant for kids doesn't mean it won't connect with adults or prove to be a classic in the decades to come. Darker themes and elements are a key part of any children's story, and many of these films are so highly rated and well remembered because they take kids and their opinions seriously. Incorporating scary moments and more mature themes within a safe story is a great way to connect with younger audiences and convey deeper messages.
Despite it being considered a more kid-friendly genre, there are plenty of animated movies that are pretty dark, demonstrating how versatile the medium is. Similarly, live-action can prove to be just as magical and immersive as animation, creating innovative sets and creatures with practical movie sets that aren't CGI. While...

The historic Jim Henson Company lot, which started life as Charlie Chaplin Studios in Los Angeles, has found a new buyer: John Mayer.
Yes, the singer-songwriter behind “Daughters” and “Waiting on the World to Change” has partnered with filmmaker McG to purchase the sprawling lot, located in the heart of Hollywood at 1416 N. La Brea Ave. The contract is in final negotiations as of Monday night, TheWrap has learned.
Mayer recorded his excellent 2021 album “Sob Rock” at Henson Recording Studios, part of the same lot, and filmed a performance video for “Last Train Home” (from the “Sob Rock”) album there.

McG is best known for directing the “Charlie’s Angels” movies starring Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu and Drew Barrymore, along with “Terminator Salvation,” “We Are Marshall” and this year’s Netflix YA epic, “Uglies.”
Earlier this year, TheWrap exclusively reported that the lot was up for sale.

After working in the film and gaming industries for over 15 years on titles such as the River City Girls games, Apex Legends Mobile, RetroRealms’ Ash Vs. Evil Dead & Halloween, all 9 Atari Recharged games, and winning multiple awards for her scores, McDuffee’s new album draws inspiration from a wide range of artists including Puscifer, Massive Attack, Nine Inch Nails, Deftones, The Cure, Iamx, Infected Mushroom, and Zeromancer.
The press release previews, “With that diverse list of influences alone, audiences will know that Crimson Legacy will have a lot of component parts, but, in McDuffee’s own tradition, they will be expertly blended into something entirely different and wholly her own. With her trademark heavy retro synths, McDuffee incorporates a number of...

It's hard to recommend the "Terrifier" films, seeing that they are the most violent, disgusting, and morally loathsome horror movies on the current cinematic landscape. But it's easy to warn people about them, and for the right breed of horror fan to take that warning as all the recommendation they need. God help me: I've become an Art the Clown fan, and each new entry in this ludicrously violent slasher series keeps finding new ways to test what I find acceptable in my entertainment.
"Terrifier 3" picks up the baton from its nasty, nightmarish predecessor and sprints with it. Like the surprise hit "Terrifier 2," the new movie is a nauseating experience where every death scene is masterclass in practical special effects wizardry. But also like the second movie, there's an eerie tinge of fantasy throughout the whole thing that makes it all feel like a weird dream to the viewer.
