Atonement director Joe Wright is set to direct the AI thriller Alignment, whose script was bought last year for $3.25m. We take a look at why it sold for so much.
Reading the news was like travelling back in time. A spec script, said to be written by someone with few Hollywood connections, had sold for over $3m. In an industry where filmmakers and producers often talk about the death of original screenplays, and where huge sums of money tend to go to big-name showrunners rather than writers, the sale of Alignment in December 2024 harkened back to a different era for movies.
In 1986, Shane Black sold his first script, Lethal Weapon, for $250,000. He was just 25 years old at the time. Four years later, his screenplay for another thriller, The Last Boy Scout, sold for $1.75m. As sale prices for scripts blew up in the 1990s, millionaire writers were created seemingly overnight.

Matthew Broderick has enjoyed a long and notable career in Hollywood. The actor's career began in the 1980s with Max Dugan Returns, and he quickly evolved into a worldwide sensation. He starred in 1986's Ferris Bueller's Day Off, which earned $70 million on a $5 million budget and would eventually be preserved in the Library of Congress. He then went on to appear in The Lion King (1994), Godzilla (1998), and Inspector Gadget (1999). Throughout those years, he also appeared on stage, if only out of his love for theater. There, he won two Tony Awards within 15 years.

Did Principal Strickland ever have hair? And were the McFlys always slackers? The answers nearly came true at FanExpo New Orleans over the weekend, as Michael J. Fox and James Tolkan reunited, recreating their famous showdown at Hill Valley High.
In the photo (seen below), Michael J. Fox and James Tolkan joined up to give a modern recreation of the scene in which Principal Strickland gives Marty McFly a verbal berating in the hallway, telling him, “You got a real attitude problem, McFly; you’re a slacker. You remind me of your father when he went here; he was a slacker, too.” Really the only thing that would have made this shot better was if Claudia Wells (Jennifer Parker) was by Fox’s side. As the caption reads: “Slackers never change and Mr. Strickland will be sure to remind you. Michael J. Fox and James Tolkan reunited at #FANEXPONewOrleans2025 today...

Welcome to this review of 2024’s Survivor Series, which delivers yet another WarGames pay-per-view rather than the traditional show of yesteryear. Hopefully this year’s PPV lives up to the standard set by the previous two Survivor Series: WarGames! Let’s see shall we…

With Team Ripley earning the advantage, Naomi entered the cage next and celebrated her birthday by teaming with Bayley as they tried to take down Jax. Jax, however, literally flushed her competition by using a toilet seat to inflict damage. Jax’s toilet seat usage backfired, as Naomi used the seat to give a stinkface to Jax. WWE continues to have one of the greatest years in its history with a fantastic Survivor Series 2024 in Vancouver. Roman Reigns and Cm Punk put their differences aside, as Roman's team defeated Solo's Bloodline in a thrilling WarGames match for the ages. In 1975, George Kennedy starred in an unusual revenge thriller in which AI was used to catch the bad guys. A look back at The ‘Human’ Factor:
Revenge films and vigilantes were all over the place in the 1970s, whether it was Charles Bronson’s Paul Kersey gunning down crooks in Death Wish (1974) or Robert De Niro’s Travis Bickle going on a rampage in Taxi Driver (1976). One of the more unusual thrillers of its type from the era, though, was The ‘Human’ Factor from 1975. For one thing, there’s its high-tech premise, in which George Kennedy’s protagonist uses cutting-edge technology to track down his enemies.
Kennedy plays John Kinsdale, a middle-aged, American computer expert stationed in Naples. Each day, he says goodbye to his picture-perfect Nuclear family – wife, two sons, a daughter with an outsized clown doll – and drives to his workplace at a nearby NATO base. There,...

Thought to be insane by his LAPD bosses thanks to his troubled history of war-related Ptsd, Murphy steals ”Blue Thunder” in an attempt to reveal the murderous conspiracy behind its creation, culminating in a series of spectacular dogfights in skies above downtown Los Angeles.

If John Hughes’ The Breakfast Club remains the quintessential ‘80s Brat Pack movie, what ranks as a close second? If we’re talking headcount, Joel Shcumacher’s critically panned commercial hit St. Elmo’s Fire (which might be getting a sequel) tops them all. The movie follows a tight-knit group of seven Georgetown post-graduates navigating young adulthood and helped define the “Brat Pack” as a play on the fraternal friendship forged by Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack in the ‘50s and ‘60s. In addition to advancing Schumacher’s directorial career, St. Elmo’s Fire partially launched the careers of stars Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy, and Mare Winningham, most of whom would be associated with the Brat Pack for the next 40 years. The subject is documented in the new Hulu documentary, Brats, written and directed by McCarthy in a tender and touching snapshot of...

It’s one thing to have a self-deprecating sense of humor. It’s something else entirely to appear on a sitcom as an incredible a-hole version of yourself. Say what you will about "Gilligan's Island," but the critically derided 1960s sitcom knew its audience and pandered to them with buffoonish élan. Though that audience didn't fully materialize until after the series' cancellation in 1967, decades of successful syndication is all the proof you need to acknowledge that creator Sherwood Schwartz (who also brought together "The Brady Bunch") was some kind of low-aiming visionary.
Those of us who blew countless hours of our childhood hanging with the castaways on that uncharted desert isle somewhere in the Pacific Ocean owe Schwartz a debt of gratitude. Watching Bob Denver's Gilligan ineptly ensure that the Skipper (Alan Hale Jr.) and the passengers of the S.S. Minnow remain stranded on that tropical patch of earth made not doing chores and/or homework a brain-numbing joy. Yes, the jokes were awful and the plots shamelessly recycled, but there was something strangely compelling about Schwartz's dramatis personae.

Hollywood has a fascinating relationship to video games. Dating back to "Super Mario Bros." in 1993, studios have understood that the popularity of video games was worth trying to exploit for the sake of silver screen entertainment. Unfortunately, that movie was a disaster that paved the way for decades' worth of similar disasters to follow. It's only in the last handful of years that the video game movie curse has truly started to break, with massive hits such as the animated "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" making waves along with things like "Sonic the Hedgehog" and "Detective Pikachu." Still, there are plenty of misses, with Eli Roth's new "Borderlands" movie being met with brutal reviews out of the gate.
With "Borderlands" hitting theaters, it's worth taking a quick look at the state of things. In truth, there just aren't all that many truly great direct movie adaptations of video games,...

Martin Mull, who played Colonel Mustard in Clue, Roseanne’s boss Leon Carp in the ABC comedy Roseanne and starred on Norman Lear’s Fernwood 2 Nite, died Thursday at his home. He was 80.
The news was revealed by his daughter Maggie Mull, an exec producer on Family Guy.
“I am heartbroken to share that my father passed away at home on June 27th, after a valiant fight against a long illness. He was known for excelling at every creative discipline imaginable and also for doing Red Roof Inn commercials. He would find that joke funny. He was never not funny. My dad will be deeply missed by his wife and daughter, by his friends and coworkers, by fellow artists and comedians and musicians, and—the sign of a truly exceptional person—by many, many dogs. Psych was ahead of its time with a fake psychic premise, taking hilarious shots at more serious series like The Mentalist. The show's '80s nostalgia, with frequent references and guest stars, foreshadowed the mainstream '80s revival of the 2020s. Despite her character's redemptive death, Ally Sheedy's Mr. Yang could return in the franchise's upcoming fourth movie spinoff.
While the Brat Packs Ally Sheedy might be best known as the star of numerous classic teen movies, her best comeback role was as a surprisingly scary serial killer in Psych. Image Source: Shout Factory Beep, boop, screech… Do you recall how dial-up internet sounded? In 1983, things were more straightforward in the world. Nevertheless, a film titled WarGames debuted in theaters, and it was a prophecy as well as amusement. It was a gripping drama about a young hacker who almost triggered World War III from his bedroom, not your average teenage frolic. In the movie, Matthew Broderick plays David Lightman, an intelligent but rebellious kid who unintentionally breaks into a top-secret military supercomputer. He discovers what he initially believed to be a great new video game—a terrifyingly lifelike war simulation. If you make one mistake, it’s not simply “game over”—global devastation. The movie was a big hit, but its influence was felt much beyond theaters. A serious discussion concerning the possibility of cyberwarfare was sparked by the screening of WarGames at the White House, surprisingly enough. A...

Brats focuses on the impact of the "Brat Pack" nickname on young actors of the 1980s, honing in on three central films. McCarthy's documentary features conversations with former co-stars and social experts, exploring the collective experience of the actors. The 80s and 90s were a great time for character actors. Guys like Gene Hackman, Brian Dennehy, Christopher Walken, John Lithgow, Morgan Freeman and many others occupied this really interesting place where they could lead their own movies and be just as comfortable playing supporting roles – whether large or small – in bigger films without worrying about things legit movie stars have to, such as bankability. Of that era, one of the biggest character actors was no doubt the fast-talking James Woods. In the eighties, his star rose thanks to movies like Videodrome, Salvador, True Believer and many others. While he never became a legit box office superstar, he was in that niche place where he could lead his own movies, such as the underrated Best Seller, while also playing plum supporting roles in movies like Chaplin, The Specialist and Casino. He was noted as one of the town’s biggest scene-stealers,...

Dark Matter releases on Apple TV+ on May 8th, 2024.
In 2016 Blake Crouch published his novel Dark Matter. It was a thrilling story exploring the possibilities of varying realities and alternate universes through the multiverse. The concept of the multiverse in entertainment was nothing new; however, this was years before the multiverse boom that now engulfs Marvel, DC and even the Oscars with hits like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Everything Everywhere All At Once.
I had the chance to speak with the series’ star Jimmi Simpson and Executive Producers Blake Crouch and Matt Tolmach.

Has Dr. Ben Song (Raymond Lee) made his final leap? It would appear so, as Deadline has reported that NBC has canceled Quantum Leap after two seasons. The series had been on the bubble, so the news isn’t a complete surprise, but it’s sure to be disappointing for fans.
The follow-up to the original series takes place nearly 30 years since Dr. Sam Beckett stepped into the Quantum Leap accelerator and vanished. Now, a new team, led by physicist Ben Song (Lee), has been assembled to restart the project. Everything changes, however, when Ben makes an unauthorized leap into the past, leaving the team behind to solve the mystery of why he did it. The second season finale aired on February 20th. While it wasn’t written to be a series finale, Quantum Leap showrunners Martin Gero and Dean Georgaris hoped it could provide some closure while also setting the stage for new stories.

Matthew Broderick is a true star of stage, screen and television who first came to moviegoers’ attention over four decades ago in the thriller “WarGames.” He then triumphed in comedies, dramas and musicals both on stage and in film. Add to that his long-term marriage to Sarah Jessica Parker, and there’s a lot for him to celebrate.
For his stage work, Broderick has won two Tony Awards (as Best Featured Actor for 1983’s “Brighton Beach Memoirs” and as Best Actor for the 1995 revival of the musical “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying”), as well as an additional Best Actor nom for 2001’s “The Producers” for a performance that he brought to the screen in the 2005 film. You can’t teach someone to be an artist; as Steven Soderbergh once noted, if you could “we’d all be Stanley Kubrick.” Yet you can teach the craft necessary for artists to express themselves, and in the case of many of the books that follow, you can provide the inspiration necessary to unlock an artist’s best and most exciting ideas. Here are 13 must-read volumes for any aspiring director, books that examine the job from a variety of technical, artistic, and logistical angles. Some are more nuts-and-bolts manuals on how to use the camera, others — the ones written by working directors like Bethany Rooney, Mary Lou Belli, and Ken Kwapis — survival guides for anyone who wants to sustain a career in the industry. Taken together, they provide a comprehensive look at what it takes to direct and arm filmmakers with the tools they need to succeed.

The Special Guest Referees is making a return for his year’s WWE 2K24. A feature that was last seen a decade ago allows players to control another wrestler as they take on the role of the match official which will let them dictate the course of the match.
It is evident that this feature was well received by the community so much that it upset them for its absence in succeeding entry titles. Fueling more drama and tension in each match will make up for some quality entertainment, especially with your friends all piled around the screen.

As Hollywood neared the midpoint of the 1980s, the industry had abandoned the risk-taking ethos of the 1970s and unabashedly embraced formula filmmaking. Stars still mattered, but the pitch was king. Studio executives keen on becoming their generation's Jack Warner, Daryl Zanuck and Louis B. Mayer were through humoring unpredictable auteurs like Martin Scorsese and Hal Ashby. They wanted can't-miss high-concept projects powered by high-wattage stars that could play for months on end in theaters because, despite the skyrocketing value of home video and pay cable channels, theatrical was still king.
"Beverly Hills Cop" traversed a rocky path from inception to production, but producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer doggedly developed and re-developed the project until they paired a 23-year-old comedy superstar with a once-hot director who'd two years prior gotten himself fired off "WarGames." Taylor Sheridan's "Yellowstone" has always had a terrific cast, but a particular masterstroke of casting came in the show's second season finale, during a flashback in which John Dutton III (Kevin Costner) takes his dying father, John Dutton, Jr., up to the mountains for one last ride. The patriarch is played by the great Dabney Coleman, an actor partially known for playing hard-ass characters in things like "WarGames" and "Cloak and Dagger." We don't see him for long in "Yellowstone," but in his short amount of screen time, he leaves a tremendous impact -- not only in the emotional conversation he has with his son, but his edict to never give up an inch of the Dutton Ranch fuels Costner's character throughout the whole series.

It’s a lean month for new original content on HBO/Max. November will see the return of two scripted series in Julia and Rap Sh!t, both of which are debuting their respective second seasons, but this month’s fresh highlight is likely to be Bookie, a new comedy series from the partnership of The Big Bang Theory creator Chuck Lorre, and Nick Bakay. The show tracks an LA bookie called Danny (Sebastian Maniscalco), whose business is in peril as California movies to legalize sports gambling.
Elsewhere in November, there quite a few interesting documentaries to keep an eye on, and two that jump out as “must watch”. Watching it in 2023, one might find themselves a little baffled as to why Martin Brest's 1984 crime comedy "Beverly Hills Cop" was such a massive success. Made for a modest $13 million, "Beverly Hills Cop" caused a sensation, earning over $234 million domestically which is, when adjusted for inflation, closer to $700 million. It made Eddie Murphy a household name and more or less codified an emerging genre of R-rated buddy cop movies that would remain ascendant throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s. The success of "Beverly Hills Cop" might confuse people, however, as it seems wildly basic these days. The jokes are not particularly funny, and while Murphy is as charismatic as they come, his Snobs vs. Slobs shtick seems trite and tired.
It seems that "Beverly Hills Cop," however, was merely outstripped by its imitators. In the wave of imitators that spawned, filmmakers pushed the action and the humor to higher and higher degrees,...

Ascending the driveway of a sprawling home in the Hollywood Hills for a face-to-face interview with Martin Brest, the legendary — and legendarily reclusive — director of “Beverly Hills Cop” and “Midnight Run,” it was tough not to immediately think of Xanadu, the protective enclave Charles Foster Kane retired to at the end of “Citizen Kane.” It seems like a fitting place for a former prince of the movie business to spend exile. Upon arrival, I quickly discover that the impeccably manicured property doesn’t, in fact, belong to Brest but to an artist friend, as does the lumbering, pitch-black Saint Bernard watching benevolently over our poolside conversation about the filmmaker’s career. By all accounts (most of all his own), that career came to a fiery end because of “Gigli,” but Brest soon explains how he made peace with the cataclysmic flop — even if he still can’t bear to mention it by name.

Jennifer Lawrence leads the No Hard Feelings cast opposite a young star of musical theater and a handful of iconic supporting actors. Based on a real Craigslist ad, No Hard Feelings revolves around an Uber driver facing bankruptcy after her car is repossessed. In exchange for a new car, she agrees to date a couple’s awkward teenage son so that he can develop some social skills before he goes off to college. The wild premise is given a lot of charm thanks to the talents of the No Hard Feelings cast.
No Hard Feelings is a throwback to the kind of raunchy R-rated comedy that rarely gets made these days. Directed and co-written by Gene Stupnitsky, the filmmaker behind Good Boys and writer behind Year One, Bad Teacher, and The Office’s classic “Dinner Party” episode, No Hard Feelings assembled a star-studded cast to bring its zany, colorful characters to life.

One of the most high-profile releases in the spring of 1983 was “Flashdance,” starring Jennifer Beals, directed by Adrian Lyne, and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson. It marked Beals’ feature film debut, as well as Lyne’s second major feature following 1980’s “Foxes.” It was also one of Bruckheimer’s and Simpson’s earliest projects, coming soon after “American Gigolo.” Released 40 years ago on April 15, 1983, “Flashdance” took second place at the box office its opening weekend with four million dollars, but then it became the sensation of the spring movies, jumping up to first place the next weekend and staying there well into early May. By the end of its run, “Flashdance,” about a woman who works as both a welder and an exotic dancer and wants to get into ballet school, made more than $90 million in the United States and more than $200 million worldwide.
