The state of journalism and its portrayal in movies and TV shows have always been directly proportional to each other. If journalists do their job properly, then their fictional depiction usually gets into the nitty-gritty of the profession to show what it takes to bring a piece of news into the limelight. If they don’t, well, nobody misses the chance to bash them and underscore how pivotal they are to the destruction of democracy. Now, amidst all this churning, we’ve undoubtedly gotten gems like Spotlight, Zodiac, Nightcrawler, All the President’s Men, The Harder They Fall, Network, and Ace in the Hole. However, recently, I have noticed an uptick of films and series taking potshots at journalists, which is overshadowing the comparatively positive representation of this job because freedom of press and journalistic ethics are at an all-time low. So, you can imagine the trepidation I experienced while pressing play on The Snow Girl,...

Jesse Eisenberg has put himself back in the Oscars race with A Real Pain, a film he wrote, directed, and acted in. The film has received two nominations, including Best Screenplay for Eisenberg and Best Supporting Actor for Kieran Culkin. Eisenberg’s earlier stint at the Oscars was when he went up against and lost narrowly to Colin Firth at the Academy Awards in 2011.
At the time, Eisenberg was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar for playing Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in David Fincher’s The Social Network. Aaron Sorkin wrote a screenplay for the film, that was adapted from Ben Mezrich’s book The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook, a Tale of Sex, Money, Genius, and Betrayal.

“No Challengers in original score… I feared days like this would come,” New York Times culture writer Kyle Buchanan lamented on social media after the Oscar nominations were announced. “I think the lack of an original score nomination for Challengers renders the entire Oscar nominations list invalid,” opined Hollywood Reporter commentator Daniel Feinberg. When it comes to the Academy Awards, Best Original Score isn’t usually a category rife with controversy, but this year’s lineup stoked outrage when Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross weren’t nominated for their pulse-pounding compositions from the provocative tennis drama.
So what happened?
Just weeks earlier, Reznor and Ross won the Golden Globe for their score, defeating four of the films that did get Oscar nominations: The Brutalist, Conclave, Emilia Pérez, and The Wild Robot. The fifth Oscar nominee, Wicked, missed the cut at the Globes.

Few filmmakers had a better 1970s than Sidney Lumet. While he was more prolific than most of the decade's top directors, knocking out 11 movies over a 10-year span, and did find time to helm one of the worst musicals in motion picture history (a badly bungled adaptation of "The Wiz"), when Lumet got ahold of the right material, he made classics like "Serpico," "Dog Day Afternoon," and "Network."
There isn't a more electric movie in Lumet's oeuvre than "Dog Day Afternoon." Based on a true story, the 1975 critical and commercial hit centers on a bank robbery in Brooklyn carried out by Sonny Wortzik, an amateur crook desperate to pay for his lover's gender-affirming surgery. When the heist quickly goes south, Sonny and his associates find themselves stuck holding hostages while cops swarm the building. The defiant Sonny scrambles to negotiate...

Kieran Culkin and Jesse Eisenberg star as two cousins touring Poland in Eisenberg’s second film as a director. Here’s our A Real Pain review.
Jesse Eisenberg’s sophomore directorial effort combines grief with cultural identity and some piercingly funny performances. A Real Pain is somehow devastating and rib-ticklingly funny, often at the same time, which is quite an achievement.
The film follows Jewish cousins David (Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin) who reunite to visit their late grandmother’s homeland of Poland. What’s supposed to be a commemorative trip to honour their granny turns into a bit of a struggle of wills as the cousins clash over pretty much everything.
A Real Pain gets off to a neurotic start as we observe David leaving Benji far too many voicemails about leaving for the airport, only to find Benji already there. It’s a quick and easy way to...

Roy Wood Jr. declined host Andy Cohen’s tequila shot on CNN’s New Year’s special Tuesday — and had a hilarious (if a little eyebrow-raising) reason behind it: “The last Black man to drink on this network go fired,” he quipped, nodding to former anchor Don Lemon.
“I’m going to keep it with water for right now. I need some stability,” he added as Cohen cross-talked to fellow guests Michael Ian Black and Amber Ruffin (who appeared particularly tickled by Wood’s assessment) and poured them a shot of tequila.
Sharing the viral moment on X later Tuesday night, the former “Daily Show” correspondent wrote, “Not gone catch me slippin in the Deuce-Five.”
Lemon previously hosted CNN’s New Year’s coverage and, like Cohen and and co-host Anderson Cooper, was known for letting loose in the year-end celebration and drinking a bit on air — which Wood seemed to allude to Tuesday.

Whitney Cummings was fiery while appearing on CNN’s New Year’s Eve Live with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen, taunting the co-hosts.
However, Cohen got the opportunity to make it a little awkward for Cummings, asking her about passing on Sabrina Carpenter for the Roseanne revival in 2018.
“No one passes on Sabrina Carpenter for anything,” Cummings told Cohen before explaining, “She came in and she was not a match for a million reasons.”
Cummings told Cohen, “Of course, you’re going to bring up this drama.”
Carpenter auditioned for the role of Harris Conner Healy, Roseanne’s granddaughter and daughter of Sara Gilbert’s Darlene Conner Healy. The “Please Please Please” singer lost out on the role, a role that eventually went to Emma Kenney.

Christmas is all but over, New Year is a whisker away, and another extraordinary year in the world of movies and television has almost reached its end. Now, as we sit through 2024’s proverbial end credits, breath held just in case any final frame stings arrive to shake things up as we head into 2025 (*cough* The Odyssey *cough*), we’re taking a break from our festive feasting to reflect on the biggest movie — and TV — news of 2024.
Here was a year of huge franchise comebacks on the big and small screen, of hot-button debates about AI and a very different kind of cancel culture, of box office bangers and viral sensations, and of a slew of hugely exciting meetings and truly heartbreaking partings with the people who make the films and shows we so dearly love. In short, it’s been emotional.

Adam McKay got candid about where he thinks Wicked will be in a few years.
The director and producer took to X (formerly Twitter) earlier this week to share his thoughts about Jon M. Chu’s record-breaking musical adaptation and how he doesn’t think it’ll be received as well down the line.
“On a pure storytelling level Wicked Part 1 is right up there as one of the most radical big studio Hollywood movies ever made,” he wrote in his first post, adding, “I know Part 2 swings back to the center a bit but Part 1 is nakedly about radicalization in the face of careerism, fascism, propaganda.”
He noted a few other movies that come to mind when he thinks of “radical” projects: Bridge on the River Kwai, The Sound of Music, the Searchers, It’s a Wonderful Life, The Hunger Games and Citizen Kane. He also mentioned The Best Years of Our Lives,...

YouTube TV recently announced a price hike to $83 per month, and fans can watch many of the same sports channels with Sling and save big!
YouTube TV was one of the last holdouts amongst live TV streaming services that increased prices in 2024. Nevertheless, the streamer announced in December that effective immediately for new subscribers, it was raising its base plan price from $73 per month to $83. This service carries many of the same sports channels as YouTube TV, and at $46 per month is almost half the price. Check out a more detailed comparison below!

George Clooney might seem like a fun-loving sort, but he is a man who takes his movie stardom seriously. Yes, he's a notorious practical joker who once affixed a frame to Brad Pitt's license plate that read "F*** Cops," but, really, when he's not trying to get his "Ocean's Eleven" co-star arrested, he cares deeply about his craft. If you doubt this, you should perhaps read the book "George Clooney: Anatomy of an Actor," which examines ten of his most significant film performances in some detail — and, yes, I am just recommending this book because I wrote it.
Though Clooney does come from a long line of entertainers, most prominent among them his aunt Rosemary Clooney, he's more than earned his A-list stature. After struggling throughout the 1980s by appearing in past-their-prime sitcoms ("The Facts of Life") and literally...

Is so-called “category fraud” taking over the Best Supporting Actress race at the upcoming Oscars? Is Kieran Culkin really on track to win Best Supporting Actor for “A Real Pain”?
Five top Oscar experts from major media outlets recently got together to dish these two supporting contests: Gold Derby’s Debra Birnbaum, Deadline’s Pete Hammond, Variety’s Clayton Davis, The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Feinberg, and Indiewire’s Anne Thompson. Watch their 2025 Oscars slugfest video above.
“Supporting actress is a very tough category this year, because we have some movies that are going to provide two,” Hammond says in reference to “Emilia Pérez’s” Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez. He adds that “Zoe is probably the frontrunner as we speak because, really, it’s a leading role.”
“Wicked” scene-stealer Ariana Grande is also a leading role campaigning in supporting, and she continues to climb up Gold Derby’s charts.

Exclusive: David O. Sacks Productions, Mark Goffman and Getaway Entertainment are teaming to produce a feature-length film about Satoshi Nakamoto, the enigmatic founder of Bitcoin, with Sophia Banks set to direct. The movie, based on Andrew O’Hagan’s longform article “The Satoshi Affair,” will delve into the mystery surrounding the elusive creator of the world’s most revolutionary digital currency, blending investigative journalism with captivating storytelling.
“This film will be akin to watching The Social Network without knowing who the Mark Zuckerberg character might actually be,” Sacks remarked. “I’m delighted that we have the correct team in place to bring O’Hagan’s investigation, and the events since that period, to life.”
Producers David Sacks and Daniel Brunt optioned the article and took it to longtime collaborator Mark Goffman, who is adapting the screenplay and producing with Sacks and Brunt. Producing for Getaway Entertainment are Damiano Tucci, Banks and Arwen Elys Dayton.

Younger sports fans who have grown frustrated with trying to find and pay for different platforms to watch the teams and the games that they want are turning to sports highlights on social media and television at a high rate — and they seem perfectly happy with watching highlights compared to the actual games themselves.
That was the overall takeaway of the latest Global Sports Survey released by Altman Solon this week, which found the uptake in sports highlights and related programming was higher among younger sports fans who are accustomed to watching content on social video platforms and streaming services compared to older audiences who prefer traditional TV like broadcasting and cable.

“The best antidote for a bad election is a good movie,” Richard M. Nixon once proclaimed, and for many filmgoers this week Conclave helped blot out the political noise. A papal thriller with a shock ending, Conclave’s impact again raises the question of whether serious adult fare can again command a strong market niche.
The setting of Conclave is itself a departure: The Pope is dead. The Vatican’s prayerfully powerful College of Cardinals is locked in its sanctorum, weathering intrigues about a potential new leader.
Directed by Edward Berger (All Quiet on the Western Front), a regally robed cardinal, Ralph Fiennes, struggles to sustain calm in the face of sexual and political challenges raised by Stanley Tucci and John Lithgow, among others.

Konstantin Stanislavski, the father of modern acting, famously said, “There are no small parts, only small actors.” Isabella Rossellini speaks to this quote with determined ferocity.
Rossellini’s captivating seven-minute, 51-second (according to distributor Focus Features) appearance in Edward Berger’s 120-minute religious thriller “Conclave” could be enough to earn the veteran actor the first Oscar nomination of her career.
Portraying Sister Agnes, a nun who quietly maneuvers within the Catholic Church’s power struggles as it faces the monumental task of selecting a new pope, Rossellini’s restrained yet powerful turn is generating awards buzz for supporting actress. While some Oscar pundits may question if her limited screen time will be a hurdle, her role aligns perfectly with the original intent of the supporting categories, established at the 9th Academy Awards in 1936 to recognize impactful, secondary performances.

The Social Network depicts how the revolutionary social media sensation Facebook came to be when Mark Zuckerberg first came up with the idea in 2003, but it doesn't show what happened to his partner and friend Eduardo Saverin after he was ousted from the company. Played by Andrew Garfield in the movie, Saverin gave Facebook its startup money and was fully onboard with the business. However, creative differences between Saverin and Zuckerberg led to tension at the company. Once Sean Parker came into the picture, Zuckerberg adhered to his advice more than Saverin's. This led to Saverin's dismissal from Facebook, an end to his friendship with Zuckerberg, and a lawsuit.
Saverin's role in creating Facebook is among the biggest things The Social Network gets wrong about what really happened. Saverin's unavailability was what really led to his being fired from Facebook. Zuckerberg tasked Saverin with providing the site with funding, setting up the company,...

Peter Yates' "Bullitt" is one of the most stylish cop flicks ever made. Those multi-screen opening credits designed by the great Pablo Ferro, that jazzily urbane Lalo Schifren score, those wildly cool outfits donned by Steve McQueen at the height of his laconic sexiness (some inspired by the suits sported by real life detective Dave Toschi) –- it's a stone groove punctuated by spasms of violence and, of course, a raucous car chase through the hilly streets of San Francisco. It's so ineffably pleasurable, you don't mind that the narrative is a sketchily plotted afterthought. Who needs an intricately structured story when you're watching, as Quentin Tarantino wrote in his book "Cinema Speculation," "one of the best directed movies ever made?"
You throw on "Bullitt" for the 1968-ness of it all (it's the apolitical flip-side of the coin to Haskell Wexler's roiling docudrama "Medium Cool"), as well as the...

What do you get when you cross a glossy all-star business drama with a kinky Italian horror flick, a German crime procedural, and “Fiddler on the Roof?” That insane mix may sound too good to be true, but it’s not — it’s a movie that actually exists. It’s called “Bloodline,” it was released by Paramount in 1979, and after years of intermittent accessibility on home video, it’s now available in a beautiful Blu-ray edition from the boutique label Vinegar Syndrome.
At the time of its release, “Bloodline” wasn’t a success by any criteria, but it was a major release thanks to an international cast consisting of Audrey Hepburn, Ben Gazzara, James Mason, Romy Schneider, Omar Sharif, Beatrice Straight (just a few years after her Oscar-winning turn in “Network”), Irene Papas and others. The fact that it was based on a novel by bestselling author Sidney Sheldon — who...

This month marks the return of one of the most twisted beloved modern movie characters: Betelgeuse. Of course, we all know the bio-exorcist by his easier-to-spell name, Beetlejuice. After over three decades, Beetlejuice is back with the long-awaited and appropriately named sequel "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice." You already know that most (though not all) of the cast of the original 1988 Tim Burton horror-comedy is back, including Michael Keaton as the Juice himself. One big talking point Keaton has hit on in the pre-release marketing is that, in all the years of development, he pushed hard to ensure that his character was...not in a lot of the movie. It's not just false modesty -- Beetlejuice is only in 17 minutes of the movie bearing his name, but he makes a massive impact all the same. And Keaton's performance as Beetlejuice is just one of many that manages to be memorable and iconic without being overbearing.
