The late William Friedkin had a reputation for his wild, whirling, aggressive personality on film sets. He was so blustery and temperamental that he earned the nickname "Hurricane Billy" from his co-workers. Stories from the set of his 1973 horror masterpiece "The Exorcist" are recounted frequently, and many actors, photographers, and writers have talked about the things that happened off camera while making that movie. Friendkin, it seems, thrived in a chaotic environment, and played loud audio cassettes of tribal chanting in between takes. Someone even alleged that Friedkin would occasionally fire blanks into the air, making sure everyone was a little jumpy. That kind of behavior would be considered too reckless today, but in the hoary days of the 1970s, it was considered kinda metal.
Friedkin made several horror films and thrillers in his career beyond "The Exorcist," which is still often considered one of the scariest films of all time.

The great state of Georgia has been home to an impressive number of film productions, including a number of Marvel Studios movies, but only a very small percentage of those are actually set in Georgia. Instead, the Atlanta streets frequently play the role of New York or Washington D.C., and its wild spaces can be used to represent just about anywhere.
But what about those movies that actually take place in the beautiful, complicated Peach State? Films as diverse and wonderful as "Magic Mike Xxl" and "Days of Thunder" all have great stretches set in Georgia, but some films go even further and really represent a little slice of the state with most of their runtime. Whether it's Clint Eastwood's genteel Savannah true crime murder mystery "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil," having an aca-awesome time with college acapella performers in Atlanta in "Pitch Perfect," or...

Raaz is pretty much an original spook story, told with terrific elan and a high-velocity suspense that tears across the screen with a bloodcurdling scream. Vikram Bhatt is no stranger to thrillers. His very first film, Fareb, was a thriller of shocks.
Bhatt’s previous film (inspired by What Lies Beneath) was a far less in-your-face suspense thriller than Raaz. Everything this time around is more sensuous, tactile, thrilling, throbbing with terror and anxiety. Bhatt builds a field of foreboding through age-old gimmicks associated with the horror genre. Doors creak and open ominously, screams rent the air with piercing suddenness, and a fog envelopes the studiously silent landscape in Ooty to convey the terror within.
Cinematographer Pravin (the director’s father) captures the inner and outer landscape in shades of ebony evil. As is the tradition in horror-suspense films, most of Raaz is shot in the dark. Pravin Bhatt makes...

Audiences will soon be wired into the brand-new horror film "Companion" by director Drew Hancock. The film follows a young couple whose weekend turns south when they get caught up in a murder. Josh thinks things are on lockdown until his girlfriend Iris begins spiraling out of control. The chaos forces the rest of the group to choose the best course of action in how to deal with Iris involving as little bloodshed as possible, but they fail miserably.

Yesterday, a full trailer was released for Sinners, a genre picture and a period piece from frequent collaborators Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan – who have worked on Fruitvale Station, Creed, Black Panther, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever together as director and cast member, and have other collaborations that Coogler didn’t direct. Once the trailer had been unveiled, Entertainment Weekly released a video in which Coogler and Jordan break it down, and now you can watch that video in the embed above. Coogler and Jordan try to avoid spoilers in this video, but they do talk about the film’s setting (it takes place over one day in 1932) and the characters, particularly the twin brothers played Jordan.

Last year, it was revealed that frequent collaborators Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan – who have worked on Fruitvale Station, Creed, Black Panther, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever together as director and cast member, and have other collaborations that Coogler didn’t direct – had been developing a new project in secret. Last year, a secret genre project was in development from Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan. The project had the studios in Hollywood excited to bid against each other and Warner Bros. would come out on top. The second trailer is due to hit later today. But before then, Warner Bros. has released a new poster of the film featuring Michael B. Jordan with some ominous-looking figures.
Coogler has written the script for this project, which has been described as both a genre picture and a period piece. Shortly after The Beatles split, John Lennon was publicly critical of Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. He dismissed their solo efforts and work in The Beatles. By the mid-1970s, Lennon’s attitude towards his former bandmates had softened considerably. Still, he wasn’t afraid to share his honest opinion when asked about a former Beatle’s music. He said one of Harrison’s concerts hadn’t impressed him.
John Lennon said he wasn’t thrilled with a George Harrison tour
In 1975, Lennon reflected on a recent Harrison concert he attended. It hadn’t impressed him.
“It wasn’t the greatest thing in history,” he told Rolling Stone. “The guy went through some kind of mill. It was probably his turn to get smacked.”
Harrison embarked on a 45-show tour of North America with Ravi Shankar in 1974. The critical reception was mixed, with many lambasting the shows. Lennon...

Horror movies rarely get the spotlight at the Oscars, but times are changing now, and we’ve got a new title in the coveted category of Best Picture: Demi Moore’s The Substance. The body horror film written and directed by Coralie Fargeat follows an aging celebrity who uses a black market drug to create a younger version of herself, unsuspecting of its side effects.

As we wrap an epic day of coverage of the Oscar nominations, here are some final observations:
—It’s ironic that there will be no Best Song performances at this year’s 97th Academy Awards, because music-driven movies have rarely, if ever, made such an impact. This is the first time that three music-oriented/musical films have been nominated for Best Picture in the same year: Emilia Pérez (with its chart-topping 13 nominations), Wicked (with its 10), and the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown (with eight). The last times that even two musicals faced off for Oscar’s biggest prize was in 1964 with My Fair Lady and Mary Poppins and in 1968 with winner Oliver! and Funny Girl.
—Emilia Pérez snared more noms than any foreign language film ever with 13, to lead all comers Thursday. It joins an impressive list of other 13-time Oscar nominees that includes The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,...

Horror movies tend to be frowned upon by the bigger players of the award season, but that has never once meant that the genre is without artistic merits. While it's true that the scary segment of cinema has its share of happily cheesy slasher shlock, many of the best horror movies ever are stunning affairs with plots that can leave the viewers on the edge of their seats -- even discounting all the scares.
There have been occasional Academy Award nods for horror projects over the years, but the 2025 Oscar nominations shower a surprising amount of prestige on the genre. Both Robert Eggers' vampire film "Nosferatu" and Coralie Fargeat's body horror trip "The Substance" have landed nominations in several categories. Additionally, "Alien: Romulus" was nominated for a Best Visual Effects Oscar, bringing this year's Academy Award horror representation to a very respectable three movies.

The Oscar nominations were tense as always, with many of the best actors alive going head-to-head for the biggest prizes. Names like Timothée Chalamet, Adrien Brody, and Edward Norton were called out as returning nominees. Meanwhile, Demi Moore, Mikey Madison, and Kieran Culkin were welcomed to the club. Below, we’ve ranked the performances of the 2025 Oscar nominees based on the quality of the performances.
20. Felicity Jones – The Brutalist 2025 Oscar Nominees Ranked
While the second half of The Brutalist certainly has its defenders, those who struggle with it can often point to Jones. The actress brings a very modern air to a period-set film. Additionally, she feels wrong in the role, overacting and pushing too far in several scenes. We like Jones well enough, but in The Brutalist it does not work.
19. Isabella Rossellini – Conclave 2025 Oscar Nominees Ranked
One of the most iconic movie stars of all time was the beneficiary of a weak lineup.

Who’s afraid of a little female body horror? For once, not the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, which on Thursday morning, finally opened one of the last remaining gilded doors of their annual Oscar nominations, pouring love all over filmmaker Coralie Fargeat and her “The Substance.”
The filmmaker, with just her second film, earned the sole spot for a female filmmaker in the Best Director race, in addition to helming the lone female-directed film in the Best Picture race. Meanwhile, other female filmmakers and their work were shut out not just from the picture and director race, but the entire Oscar nom kit and kaboodle, including Payal Kapadia and her “All We Imagine as Light” and Halina Reijn and her “Babygirl.”
Earlier this month, Fargeat told IndieWire at the Golden Globes that she believes horror films are fully deserving of a level playing field at the Oscars.

French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat’s body horror masterpiece The Substance was one of the best horror movies of last year, and it’s one of the rare horror films to come along in recent years that had actually been generating Academy Awards buzz. Well, the nominations for this year’s Oscars were announced today, and The Substance received some major recognition.
For starters, Demi Moore has been nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for her performance as Elisabeth Sparkle in The Substance, a fading celebrity who injects herself with a cell-replicating substance that literally makes her give birth to a younger version of herself (Margaret Qualley). It’s a performance that already resulted in Moore taking home the Golden Globes trophy for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, which sets the stage for a potential Academy Awards win.

While Paul McCartney drew much of his bandmates’ ire after The Beatles split, John Lennon angered McCartney, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison as well. In a 1971 interview, Lennon went after his former bandmates and their work in The Beatles. What he had to say about them was not flattering. Starr was used to Lennon’s sometimes painful honesty, but he thought he went too far in the interview.

John Lennon began working on the 1975 album Rock ‘n’ Roll in 1975. During the recording process, Lennon spent late, drunken nights in the studio with producer Phil Spector. During more than one session, they got absolutely nothing done. While the album was successful, Lennon said he felt that it had a curse on it.
John Lennon felt like one of his albums was cursed
After 18 months of separation from Yoko Ono, Lennon returned home to her. He said it felt like he’d been on an arduous journey to get there.
“I feel like I’ve been on Sinbad’s voyage, you know, and I’ve battled all those monsters and I’ve got back. (long pause),” he told Rolling Stone in 1975. “Weird.”
He said his work with Spector marked the beginning of a long, dark period in his life. He drank heavily, used drugs, and got into fights with friends and strangers alike.

Why do Quentin Tarantino’s movies never have any bold scenes? ( Photo Credit – Flickr )
Way back, Quentin Tarantino vowed never to share a penny of his success with his mom, Connie Zastoupil. And yep, he’s kept that promise.
The Pulp Fiction mastermind spilled the tea on The Moment with Brian Koppelman, sharing a childhood clash that changed everything. Turns out, Tarantino’s writing dreams weren’t exactly hyped at home. His mom’s biting words? They lit a fire in him—a fire that’s still blazing today.
“She was always giving me a hard time about my struggles in school,” Tarantino revealed. But the breaking point came when she belittled his dreams. During a tirade about his poor grades, she sarcastically dismissed his aspirations, saying, “‘Oh, and by the way, this little writing career? That sh*t is f*cking over.’”

In 1973, John Lennon and Yoko Ono temporarily separated. The former Beatle went to Los Angeles at Ono’s suggestion and embarked on a campaign of debauchery that became known as his Lost Weekend. While at first Lennon seemed happy to be on his own, his behavior began to spiral. His friend, Elliot Mintz, recalled the singer’s rock bottom night was so shocking that it felt like a scene out of a horror movie.

James Mangold wants to “say something original” with ‘Swamp Thing’.The 61-year-old director is set to helm the movie about the comic book monster for DC Studios, though he has insisted ‘Swamp Thing’ will be a standalone project and has no plans to expand it into the wider DC Universe (Dcu).Mangold told MovieWeb: “In relation to like ‘Swamp Thing’ at DC, It's just a matter of do we find a way on the page to say something original.”Mangold - who is also due to helm the ‘Star Wars’ spin-off ‘Dawn of the Jedi’ for Lucasfilm - emphasised he didn’t want to be “handcuffed” by the wider stories of a blockbuster franchise because they generally have a “religious level” of lore to uphold. He said: “I'm not that interested in being handcuffed by so much lore at this point that it's almost immovable, and you can't please anybody.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Hereditary.
Director Ari Aster's 2018 film Hereditary remains one of the most divisive horror movies in modern history. Though not all audiences liked the movie when it premiered, it's no surprise that Netflix recently released Hereditary for streaming. Produced by acclaimed studio A24, Hereditary was hyped as an instant modern horror classic before its premiere, drawing in plenty of viewers who wanted to experience this frightening phenomenon for themselves.
Though A24's Hereditary delivered plenty of scary scenes and an engaging story, the film had a shocking reception in theaters after it split general audiences down the middle. Hereditary has its fair share of fans and haters, but it ended up being one of the most popular, profitable, and disputable films ever produced by A24. All in all, this film's reputation is expected to make Hereditary a top viewing choice on Netflix.

The Phunny Plush line from Kidrobot has so far included the likes of Michael Myers, Pennywise, Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, Regan from The Exorcist, Gizmo and some Gremlins, a Killer Klown from Outer Space… and there are a lot more characters joining the line in March, as you can see on Entertainment Earth. Upcoming additions include Chucky, Leatherface, Ghostface, Sam from Trick ‘r Treat, The Grabber from The Black Phone – and even Blade and Torch from Full Moon‘s Puppet Master franchise!
Blade was introduced in the original Puppet Master, which was directed by David Schmoeller from a script that was crafted by Kenneth J. Hall and Joseph G. There, they discover that their compatriot Neil (Jimmie F. Scaggs) has apparently committed suicide. But, as the gruesome visions continue,...

There, they discover that their compatriot Neil (Jimmie F. Scaggs) has apparently committed suicide. But, as the gruesome visions continue,...

Russell Crowe is one of the most distinguished actors of his generation. Recently, Crowe's career has deviated towards the horror genre — with two similar roles in The Pope's Exorcist and The Exorcism. Crowe was nominated for Best Actor three years running during the 2000s for his lead role in Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind, and The Insider. While Crowe has experienced notable highs in his career, he has encountered significant setbacks, too. Poker Face sits at Crowe's lowest critic score on Rotten Tomatoes with a meager 9%, and his most recent slate of films has not performed well.
In 2023, Crowe portrayed the real-life Vatican exorcist in The Pope's Exorcist, Father Gabriele Amorth. Months later, Crowe featured in The Exorcism, where he depicts a single father and recovering addict, starring on a cursed film set. The comparisons between The Pope's Exorcist and The Exorcism were addressed by the writer, who believes "it's sort of a happy accident.

Ari Aster’s Hereditary (2018) is the kind of film that sticks with you long after the credits roll. It’s a wild mix of family drama, dark secrets, twisted plot twists, and strained relationships, all leading up to a gut-punch of a climax that’s left audiences feeling emotionally drained. When it hit theaters on January 21, 2018, the film quickly gained praise, cementing Aster’s place as a horror genius. Many even compare it to the 1972 classic The Exorcist. If you’ve already seen it, you know how intense it is. If not, good news – Hereditary is now available to stream online, so you can dive into this chilling tale whenever you’re ready. Critics are divided on their respective opinions as to what has made ‘Hereditary’ a masterpiece and a potential benchmark for horror for posterity. One interpretation surrounds the gestalt of the movie around the breakdown of the nuclear...

While the duo have finally been confirmed to be coming back, Freddie Prinze Jr. has some surprising insight about Julie and Ray's return in the I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel. After moving away from a Mike Flanagan-helmed remake, development began on a direct sequel to the 1998 sequel with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson directing on a script she co-wrote with Sam Lansky, from a story she developed with Leah McKendrick. The new Last Summer cast is set to be led by Madelyn Cline, with Jennifer Love Hewitt and Prinze Jr. confirmed separately in September and December 2024.
Now, during a recent interview with Scale Talk Podcast with David Miniatures, Prinze Jr. was asked about his upcoming return for the I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel. In addition to reaffirming he will be playing Ray again for the film, Prinze Jr. also confirmed that neither he nor...

Russell Crowe is a versatile actor who stars in movies of varying genres, but many don’t realize he is in four different horror movies. Russell Crowe’s best movies include the likes of Les Misérables, Gladiator, and L.A. Confidential, all of which see him portray a range of unique characters. Since his beginnings in New Zealand, Crowe has soared to international fame, and he is now one of the most prominent actors in the world.
There are plenty of things viewers need to know about Russell Crowe, but the most important is that his dip into the world of horror movies is a relatively recent thing. While the actor is known for providing gripping performances in hard-hitting dramas, some of the best biopic movies of all time, and hilarious comedies, Crowe doesn’t typically take on characters who are vicious and brutal.

Swedish filmmaker Magnus von Horn finds himself in some rarefied, multi-cultural air this awards season, appearing on both the International Oscar shortlist and the BAFTA longlist in the comparable category for his first Danish-language feature, The Girl with the Needle.
Von Horn’s Swedish-produced debut, The Here After, premiered in Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight in 2015, while his second feature film, the Polish-produced Sweat, was part of the official program of the Covid-canceled Cannes in 2020.
The filmmaker currently resides in Poland and has dual citizenship with Sweden, so what drew his interest in pivoting to a Danish movie? In the Q&a below, he explains it was the story itself that touched upon his own inner fears.
Starring Vic Carmen Sonne and Trine Dyrholm, The Girl with the Needle is inspired by one of Denmark’s most notorious murder cases. It follows Karoline (Sonne), a young factory worker struggling to survive in post-wwi Copenhagen.

Like Jaws to shark movies and The Exorcist to possession flicks, any dinosaur-related media will inevitably be compared to 1993’s Jurassic Park. While this makes a lot of sense, with Spielberg’s classic bringing the prehistoric beasts to life in new and exciting ways that previous filmmakers could only dream of (and that future filmmakers would struggle to recreate), it also means that some truly interesting dinosaur stories have been overshadowed by Jp‘s legacy.
In the past, I’ve recommended some fun dinosaur films that aren’t Jurassic Park, but today I’d like to discuss something a little less cinematic – Hallmark and Rtl’s forgotten miniseries adaptation of James Gurney’s Dinotopia. So if you’re in the mood to revisit a quintessentially 2000s yarn about shamanistic reptiles and the naive humans that live alongside them, read on to discover why I think this family-oriented production might also appeal to horror fans.

After watching the scene in “The Substance” where Elisabeth Sparkle, played by Demi Moore, repeatedly applies and wipes off lipstick in front of a mirror — a chilling metaphor for identity, erasure and self-loathing — I couldn’t have imagined that critics and awards voters would embrace it. Yet here we are, with Moore emerging as a frontrunner in the Oscar race for her career-defining performance in Coralie Fargeat’s provocative body horror film. Her Golden Globes win Sunday not only cements Moore’s legacy but also shines a long-overdue spotlight on horror as a genre worthy of awards season acclaim.
At 62, Moore is on the verge of earning her first-ever Oscar nomination for best actress. Her haunting and multilayered portrayal of an aging star who takes a mysterious serum to regain her youth — only for the experiment to spiral into a surreal nightmare — has been hailed as a masterclass in physical and emotional transformation.

Everybody knows horror movies are historically underappreciated at the Academy Awards. Movies like “Black Swan” or “The Exorcist” break in, sometimes, on the heels of a great star performance or culture-dominating momentum. On the Golden Globes red carpet, “The Substance” Best Director and Best Screenplay nominee Coralie Fargeat told IndieWire that horror movies deserve Oscar attention as much as any other genre.
“I don’t see horror films as any different from other movies,” she said. “They are so political. They are such a great way to tell so many things in a very rude way, and in a very indelicate way. To me, they should compete at the same level as everything else. I learned to accept who I was as a filmmaker, not loving writing dialogue, for instance, but expressing myself in a visual and very visceral way. And that’s when you accept who you are, and then the magic can happen.

This article mentions real-life fatal accidents, murders, and other tragic occurrences.
Most horror movies are already terrifying enough on screen to leave the audience shaking with fear, but sometimes, the terror sadly does not stop there. Some of the most hauntingly scary movies hide behind-the-scenes stories that are just as unnerving as the films themselves. Sometimes, these off-screen details end up becoming part of the movie's pop culture impact, even though often due to misinformation and urban legends.
From apparently cursed productions to mysterious, eerie occurrences, many of the horror movie classics that defined the history of the genre are associated with behind-the-scenes tragedies or at least strange cases. While no movie production is immune to those types of occurrences, they ended up becoming even more noticeable when tied to the production of a horror film.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that frequent collaborators Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan – who have worked on Fruitvale Station, Creed, Black Panther, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever together as director and cast member, and have other collaborations that Coogler didn’t direct – have been developing a new project in secret. Coogler has written the script for this project, which is called Sinners and has been described as both a genre picture and a period piece. The project is set up at Warner Bros., has a budget of around $90 million, and is scheduled for a theatrical release on April 18, 2025 (having moved back from a previously announced March release date). Over the holidays, a new teaser (which still has the old release date) was unveiled, as embedded at the top of the article.

Christmas is all but over, New Year is a whisker away, and another extraordinary year in the world of movies and television has almost reached its end. Now, as we sit through 2024’s proverbial end credits, breath held just in case any final frame stings arrive to shake things up as we head into 2025 (*cough* The Odyssey *cough*), we’re taking a break from our festive feasting to reflect on the biggest movie — and TV — news of 2024.
Here was a year of huge franchise comebacks on the big and small screen, of hot-button debates about AI and a very different kind of cancel culture, of box office bangers and viral sensations, and of a slew of hugely exciting meetings and truly heartbreaking partings with the people who make the films and shows we so dearly love. In short, it’s been emotional.

We hear all the time that a movie starts on the page, and while this is true in an overarching sense, for practical purposes, the process of making a motion picture intended to screen in theaters or stream into living rooms starts when you've raised enough money to hire the actors and crew and so on required to get that page-bound vision before a camera. It's at this point that you begin fretting about getting a return on your investment and, just maybe, turning a profit. In this sense, all filmmaking is risk-taking.
This is the movie business, and it didn't used to be of widespread public interest. Once in a blue moon, people would be aware that a film like Joseph L. Mankiewicz's "Cleopatra" cost a studio-devouring amount of money; meanwhile, they could tell "The Exorcist," "Jaws" and "Star Wars" were making scads of money because they could...

2024 featured plenty of unique and frightening horror movies that left a strong impression on the world. Films like Smile 2 and Longlegs succeeded in theaters by featuring plenty of surprising horror movie jump scares, as well as a great amount of spine-tingling suspense. Meanwhile, movies like Terrifier 3 and The Substance stood out by presenting an overwhelming amount of blood and violence that both upset viewers' stomachs and brought in huge profits.
Whatever their style, many of 2024's great horror movies succeeded at scaring its audience. As the modern horror renaissance continues to sweep the cinema industry, 2024 presented many profitable and critically acclaimed films that have made for some of the best horror movies of all time. In this era's new class of horror It Girls, one actress is flying under the radar but could challenge for the crown of #1 modern horror scream queen right now. Even though horror has never really struggled as a genre, it's fair to say that it's thriving like never before right now. With the explosion of streaming and a growing embrace of genre offerings, horror is weirder, more experimental, smarter, and in more formats than it ever has been. Horror anthologies and horror TV series abound, Neon and especially A24 offer inventive horror movies, and big horror franchises are coming back from the dead. It's a great time to be a horror fan.
Still, a genre is only as strong as its actors, and horror is no different; horror movies live and die by their final girls. This resurgence has been fueled by smart writing and directing, but also by the excellent performances in the genre.

To say that Robert Eggers has brought us the worst of the mainline “Nosferatu” features isn’t necessarily the derogatory designation implied by such a statement; F. W. Murnau and Wener Herzog have simply left such massive boots for any eager artist to fill. To say that “Nosferatu” constitutes Eggers’s worst film is, also, not quite a derogatory statement, but rather a testament to the towering artistic vision that the historically inclined auteur-in-the-making has stamped onto the scene over the course of his still-brief career.
With all that being said… Yes, Eggers’s “Nosferatu” is both the worst of the mainline “Nosferatu” features and the worst of the director’s own, but not for a lack of either style or reverence. While horror movies are typically not in contention for the most high-profile awards in the movie industry, there have been several notable exceptions over the years, particularly in regard to the Academy Award for Best Picture. The horror genre has undergone somewhat of a renaissance in recent years, with high-concept horror narratives usurping cheap gore and jump-scares. Hollywood A-listers have begun to embrace the horror genre as a more respected form of cinema, with film icons like Halle Berry, Nicolas Cage, Hugh Grant and Al Pacino all involved with horror movies in the last year.
As well-received as some of the best horror movies of all time have been, the genre in general has typically remained excluded from the most prestigious award lists. You don't always have to agree with Stephen King, but when the master of horror recommends a film or series, you should, at the very least, hear him out. Moreover, the author's horror-related opinions rarely miss, and he often rallies for overlooked genre gems like "The Autopsy of Jane Doe" and John Griffin's gripping sci-fi horror series "From," which you might not have heard of. In the past, King has also taken to X/Twitter to (rightfully) dunk on certain genre entries, including sharing his opinion about the worst horror film he has ever seen or beloved blockbusters he walked out of as an adult. Recently, though, King took to Instagram Threads to recommend a critically maligned Apple TV+ series starring Billy Crystal, writing:
"Before (Apple+): This show has a creepy Exorcist vibe, and Billy Crystal is very good. Short and scary episodes."

Historically, horror has been a hugely popular movie genre, yet often overlooked by critics and award ceremonies like the Academy Awards. This perceived snub stems from a long-held belief that horror, with its emphasis on scares and thrills, is somehow less "elevated" than other genres. Blockbuster actions have faced a similar bias, with the implication being that they are more designed for pure entertainment than artistic merit.
While the Academy has gradually begun to acknowledge the artistry behind horror, the genre still faces an uphill battle for true recognition. The tide does seem to be changing, inspiring bold predictions for the 2025 Oscars. Additionally, although the Academy has a reputation for not recognizing horror, quite a few horror films have been nominated for and won Oscars. However, the majority of these wins focus on their visual spectacle with both impressive practical effects and CGI in horror movies.

The 1970s were a historic time for horror movies. Some of the best and most iconic horror films of all time were released during this decade, including haunting favorites like Halloween, The Wicker Man, and The Exorcist. Many of these delightfully scary films even went on to launch massive franchises, guiding the future of the genre for many years to come. From fearsome creatures to deranged killers, the '70s had something to offer for all types of horror lovers.
Of course, not every film from that era could be as well-known as Jaws or The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. 1974 was a big year for horror. Just months after William Friedkin’s juggernaut The Exorcist shocked audiences around the world, two films electrified the genre and sent it careening in a new direction. While Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre remains one of the most viscerally terrifying films of all time, it’s sister proto-slasher Black Christmas has arguably become more relevant. The film follows Jess (Olivia Hussey) and her friends as they’re targeted by a mysterious man known as Billy (Albert J. Dunk) who hides in the attic of their sorority house. In addition to sparking the slasher revolution, Bob Clark’s film is important for another reason.
Released just one year after the historic Roe v. Wade decision granted US women the right to safe and legal abortion, Black Christmas features a main character who makes the choice to terminate her pregnancy despite her boyfriend’s strenuous—and threatening—objections.

The horror genre keeps riding the wave of legacy sequels and reboots, through which some of the biggest franchises have been brought back to life – so it’s not that surprising that two unlikely horror franchises are returning, too. The film industry has greatly benefited from reboots and legacy sequels in recent years, mostly in the horror genre, even if not all of these have succeeded. Franchises like The Exorcist and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre returned with one movie that didn’t perform well, while others like Friday the 13th continue to face many challenges that stop them from coming back.

Things are happening over at DC Studios. Just a little over two years after James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as the new heads and chairmen of the newly-formed studio, their DC Universe is slowly beginning to come together. But, really, the slowest part about it all was the waiting for the projects to get made - because, honestly, once things kicked off, they haven't really stopped.
Gunn and Safran have already confirmed which films will spotlight their first phase of the franchise (titled Chapter One: Gods and Monsters) and it all starts with Superman. Well, technically, it has kicked off with animated series Creature Commandos but the live-action arm of the shared universe begins with the Man of Steel's solo adventure in July 2025.
With the wheels in motion and the cogs beginning to turn, it looks like the DC Universe is gearing up for its global arrival.
