“Why don’t you come around for dinner?,” Barcelona lifeguard Gerard Casals (Dani Rovira) asks his boss, Oscar Camps (Eduard Fernández), at the beginning of “Mediterráneo: The Law of the Sea.”
“I’ve got other plans,” says Camps. Cut to his sitting on his sofa, eating a warmed-up microwave dinner watching TV on his laptop.
Then Camps catches a news report featuring the horrific images of 3-year-old Syrian toddler Alan Kurdi, his lifeless body lying on a Turkish beach, washed by waves, after the dingy he was in capsized.
Two days later, Oscar and Gerard are sitting on a beach in Lesbos, Greece, looking across at the hulking headlands of Turkey, just seven miles away across a strait that separates Asia from the European Union. “People are dying in the sea; we’re lifeguards,” he says. So begins Camps and Casals’ life mission, which becomes the now celebrated Ngo Open Arms,...

The eight titles it profiles that are moving into production or set for release in 2021 and 2022 are a sign of Netflix ramping up its production of Spanish movies as part of its bet on Spanish scripted TV and movies, with Spain punching above its weight in the number of Netflix originals compared to Spanish subscribers. "You did something, and we're not going to pay for it." Netflix has revealed an official US trailer for Below Zero, an action thriller from Catalonian filmmaker Lluís Quílez (Out of the Dark). In the middle of a foggy, cold night, a prison van carrying convicts is assaulted. The driver, Martin, will need to defend himself from those inside and those outside if he wants to make it out alive. This reminded me of Con Air at first glance, but with a big prison bus driving through winter in Spain. The film's cast includes Javier Gutiérrez, Àlex Monner, Patrick Criado, Édgar Vittorino, Karra Elejalde, Florin Opritescu, Luis Callejo, and Isak Férriz. This actually looks like an intense, chilly thriller to enjoy at home this winter. Fire it up below. Here's the official trailer (+ two Spanish posters) for Lluís Quílez's Below Zero, direct from YouTube: On a lonely road, a prison transport is brutally assaulted.

The Catalan director is in post-production with his latest film, based on true events and starring Eduard Fernández, Dani Rovira, Sergi López and Anna Castillo. Mediterráneo, directed by Marcel Barrena, was shot over just two months, in September and October this year. The film features Eduard Fernández, Dani Rovira, Anna Castillo, Sergi López and Àlex Monner. The story takes us back to a voyage undertaken in 2015 by Óscar Camps and Gerard Canals, lifeguards on the Badalona coast, after seeing an image that sickened the world: the lifeless body of a young boy, washed up on a Mediterranean beach. Since that photograph was taken, hundreds of unsung heroes have saved the lives of more than 100,000 fellow humans, under the auspices of the Ngo Open Arms. Mediterráneo was inspired by these brave volunteers, and their struggle to stem the tragedy unfolding at...

Barcelona-based Filmax has acquired international sales rights to “Mediterraneo: The Law of the Sea,” inspired by the stirring true-life origins story of the Mediterranean-based Ngo Open Arms, an open sea migrant search and rescue mission which has saved thousands of lives.
Now just initiating post-production, having shot for over eight weeks around Greece and Barcelona, “Mediterraneo” weighs in as a new banner title for Filmax at this week’s American Film Market, where it will present a first promo.
Directed by Marcel Barrena (“100 Meters”), “Mediterraneo” turns on the life-changing journey in 2015 of two Spanish lifeguards, Oscar Camps and Gerard Canals, who travel to the Greek island of Lesbos after having seen a heart-wrenching photograph in the international press of three-year-old Syrian Alan Kurdi, washed up dead on the shores of the Mediterranean. There, they discover a shocking reality: thousands of people risking their lives every day to get from...

"Nobody wants to see these politicians disappear..." Netflix has revealed the official trailer for a Spanish mystery thriller called The Silence of the Marsh, which is already available to watch on the streaming service this week. The film was developed by Rtve & TV3 in Spain, with Zeta Cinema and Netflix. While researching corruption for his new book, a successful crime novelist blurs the line between fiction & reality, uncovering the corrupt ties between politicians and the local mafia in Valencia, Spain. This stars Pedro Alonso, Nacho Fresneda, Carmina Barrios, José Ángel Egido, Àlex Monner, Raúl Prieto, and Maite Sandoval. The trailer is dubbed in English, though it should be available to watch with subtitles. Looks like an intriguing all-the-way-to-the-top mystery, with some intense Spanish politics thrown in, too. Mariano Barroso avails himself of a cast of first-rate actors, toplined by Antonio de la Torre and Álex Monner, and a somewhat classical narrative as he recreates the origins of Eta. The date was set for this Wednesday, 8 April, at 10 pm: the team was to present the online premiere of La línea invisible (lit. “The Invisible Line”), each person from his or her own home, suitably dressed for the occasion. And so director Mariano Barroso and lead actors Àlex Monner, Antonio de la Torre, Anna Castillo, Asier Etxeandia, Patrick Criado and Enric Auquer introduced the first two episodes of this series, which is free to air and to view (via the Movistar + YouTube channel), and which describes, from a simultaneously historical and personal perspective, how the terrorist group Eta came into being. This was an entity that left mortal victims strewn not only across the Basque Country,...

Title: [Rec]³ Génesis Directed By: Paco Plaza Starring: Leticia Dolera, Diego Martín, Àlex Monner, Emilio Mencheta, Ismael Martínez, Claire Baschet It’s hard to believe that with the amount of saturation of found footage movies flooding our theaters in recent years, that there was a time when the filmmaking style was something to be considered “unique”. We all have The Blair Witch Project to blame/thank for that resurgence when it was released in 1999, but another recent example would be the claustrophobic zombie-esque movie [Rec] from Spain. If you’re thinking that a group of people quarantined inside a building by the military in a found footage style is gimmicky, you might [ Read More ]...

Title: [Rec] 3 Genesis Directed By: Paco Plaza Starring: Leticia Dolera, Diego Martín, Àlex Monner, Emilio Mencheta, Ismael Martínez, Claire Baschet I’m all for trying something new, but when you’ve got a film franchise like “Rec,” certain expectations must be met. Perhaps his fictional virus finally got to him because the fact that writer-director Paco Plaza thinks he can suddenly do away with found footage and horror in the third installment is downright bizarre. [Rec]3 Genesis
Stars: Leticia Dolera, Diego Martín, Javier Botet, Àlex Monner, Ismael Martínez, Borja Glez. Santaolalla, Mireia Ros | Written by Paco Plaza, Luiso Berdejo | Directed by Paco Plaza
Going it solo for the third film in the series, Paco Plaza helms what is, by far, a much stronger film than [Rec]2 and a film that not only changes the game for the franchise, abandoning as it does the “found-footage” perspective on proceedings, but also expands the mythos and the scope of the series, throwing religion much more to the fore in a way that takes the series, and the traditional zombie film, to whole new levels. The film is also, at its core, a love story. Yes, I did say love story.

If you’re anticipating the third installment of Paco Plaza’s highly praised [Rec] series, this brand new red-band trailer should certainly sate the appetite, at least for the time being. This piece of footage showcases some bloody wedding festivities, and while I’m not sure it’s worthy of an official “red band” tag, it’s still awfully entertaining! [Rec] 3: Genesis was written and directed by Paco Plaza, who’s manned the entire franchise at this point (Luiso Berdejo assisted in the crafting of the screenplay). Leticia Dolera, Diego Martín, Javier Botet, Àlex Monner, Ismael Martínez and Mireia Ros star.
