In today’s episode, we’re pulling the curtain all the way back for 2013’s Now You See Me– We want to know how an all-star cast became master magicians and fooled an entire division of the FBI, all while performing miracles on lush Las Vegas stages. We’re going to discuss what the movie is, how it got made, and even why Isla Fisher refused to return for the sequels. We’re about to get into all of it, so let’s go.
The art of the heist movie is a delicate thing. It’s not enough to stuff a handful of celebrities in an extravagant location and give them a big bag of sexy money. You have to innovate. Give your team incredible stakes with minimal odds, while inventing a charming and witty dynamic between the characters. Oh, and of course, you’re gonna want that bag of sexy money.

Rewatching thrillers reveals new depths in the writing and acting, making it ever more satisfying and enjoyable. Underrated psychological thrillers engage with twisting narratives of the human psyche. Great thrillers keep audiences on edge, predicting what happens next, and offer stellar performances.
Supposedly, rewatching thrillers means that some of the thrills will dissipate, but that doesn't stop me from returning to my favorite crime and psychological dramas over and over again. There is a satisfaction in rewatching a movie that changes genres halfway through and understanding how each twist works in the broader context of the story. It's always fun to revisit the most thrilling moments of a movie to dissect the writing and acting, and what makes that thrill work.
Whether it be one of the most famous thrillers of all time or a forgotten thriller that is actually great, these movies are surprising the first time around, but in the best cases,...

Jennifer Connelly is flying high these days on the big screen, both literally and figuratively. Starring opposite Tom Cruise in one of his signature roles, Connelly is the second lead in Top Gun: Maverick, a film which just shattered the Memorial Day box office record with a 160 million haul. The film also features an astonishing flying sequence in which Cruise takes Connelly up in what appears to be a World War II-era single-engine plane.
When we sat down with the Oscar winner last month, she told us that really was her up there in the clouds with Cruise at the controls. It was an extraordinary moment for Connelly, but not her first in a movie about pilots and their daredevil ways. Indeed, for audience members of a certain age, one of their first memories of Connelly may very well be her starring role in Disney’s cult classic, The Rocketeer.

Exclusive: Gunpowder & Sky’s sci-fi arm Dust has teamed with Sylvester Stallone and Braden Aftergood’s Balboa Productions to develop the sci-fi sports drama series Meshed based on the short story by the same name by Rich Larson. Edward Ricourt is on board to adapt.
Set in the not-so-distant future, Meshed is centered around a technology — appropriately called Mesh — which allows for an immersive experience of professional basketball through the eyes of its athletes. Mesh enhances the game for viewers while commoditizing the lives of its players. The show will explore the intersection of sports, sponsorship, friendship, global entertainment and winning at all costs.
“Rich Larson’s visionary short story sits at the cross-section of two very prescient ideas: the role of technology in enhancing athletic achievement, and the increasingly immersive world of spectator sport,” said Aftergood. “Sylvester Stallone and I are honored to...

Last September, it was reported that Edward Ricourt (Now You See Me) was hard at work on Nightwatch, another of Sony’s Marvel adaptations that was set to follow Venom‘s success. Sony Pictures is reportedly planning to adapt Marvel Comics' Nightwatch into a feature film. The news comes from Jeff Snieder during a recent episode of the podcast Meet the Movie Press. He says that he's "very confident" that the project is happening and went on to reveal that the script is being written by Edward Ricourt (Jessica Jones, Now You See Me, Wayward Pines) and that the studio is looking at hiring Spike Lee (Do the Right Thing, Oldboy) to direct it.
Nightwatch is a lesser known Marvel character and has only made a small number of appearances in the comics. He had his own comic in the 90s but it was short lived because it the look of the character was way too similar to Spawn.

As the many cinematic universes of comic-book franchises continue to expand, unexpected actors and filmmakers continue to enter the fray. Edgar Wright directing “Ant-Man” proved too good to be true, but previews for Taika Waititi’s take on “Thor: Ragnarok” and Ryan Coogler’s “Black Panther” inspire more confidence than the average superhero jaunt.
According to Jeff Sneider’s “Meet the Movie Press” podcast, we could be getting an even more appealing director/subject pairing: Spike Lee directing a movie about Nightwatch.

Sony’s Marvel Universe is beginning to come together at a brisk clip.
With talk of standalone pics for Kraven and Mysterio, not to mention a spinoff based on Silver Sable and Black Cat from director Gina Prince-Bythewood (Beyond the Lights), the studio has made serious headway on its own Spider-Man universe in recent weeks, and it all begins with the launch of Ruben Fleischer’s Venom next October.
The fun doesn’t stop there, though, as we’re now hearing that Sony is planning yet another spinoff for their burgeoning new franchise, and it’ll revolve around none other than Nightwatch. Jeff Sneider, Eic of The Tracking Board, is the one with the scoop here, and according to him, Edward Ricourt is currently penning the script and Spike Lee is being eyed to helm.

After directing the surprise summer heist hit Now You See Me, director Louis Leterrier will not be returning to the director's chair for the developing sequel at Summit Entertainment, despite being attached to the film last August. That means it's not a done deal, and he could just as easily fall through, but he's a solid choice to continue the saga of these four magicians now turned into master thieves and keeping it fresh. But we still don't know the story. So far, Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco and Mark Ruffalo are all expected to return, but their deals don't seem to be closed yet. There's no word yet as to whether the cast -- headlined by Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Isla Fisher, Woody Harrelson and Dave Franco -- will reprise the roles they took on in the magician heist flick. It's also unclear whether director Louis Leterrier and writers Ed Solomon, Boaz Yakin and Edward Ricourt will return for the update.

With its Us box office tally already totalling more than $100m., it’s safe to say that Now You See Me has become one of the biggest films of the year, performing brilliantly across the Atlantic.
I’ve been wanting to see the film ever since it was first announced, and am so glad that it has finally touched down on our shores this week. Chicago – Dave Franco is James Franco’s brother. Since that’s now out of the way, Dave Franco is also a writer, actor, regular on the “Funny or Die” website and co-star in the newly released film, “Now You See Me.” Franco plays a streetwise magician, and in his career he keeps bringing the magic.

Has Will Smith hit the lowest point of his career? Certainly Wild Wild West was easily his most embarrassing low-point, but going off figures and reputation alone, his new movie After Earth, sold completely on the Smith family name and developed from the ground-up by arguably the biggest movie star on the planet, has turned out to be his worst performing summer outing of all time.
After Earth has slumped in its opening weekend in the Us – taking just $26.5 million since it opened on Thursday night. That’s only enough for third place on the weekend charts behind Fast And Furious 6 ($34 million) and Lionsgate’s surprise performer Now You See Me ($28 million).

After Earth box office: Will Smith / M. Night Shyamalan sci-fier to open at highly disappointment no. 3? (Photo: Will Smith and Jaden Smith in After Earth) Starring Will Smith and his son, Jaden Smith, M. Night Shyamalan’s After Earth opened with a highly disappointing $9.8 million — including $1 million from Thursday evening and midnight screenings — at 3,401 North American theaters on Friday, according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. The Sony Pictures / Columbia release trailed not only last weekend’s top movie, Fast & Furious 6, but also Lionsgate Pictures / Summit Entertainment’s lower-budgeted "magical" heist thriller Now You See Me. Starring Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, and Vin Diesel, the Justin Lin-directed Fast & Furious 6 collected $10.5 million at 3,686 locations and could reach $33-35 million by Sunday evening and approximately $170 million cume. Sunday 1:30 Am, 4th Update: Still clocking in at #1 is Universal’s Fast & Furious 6 (3,686 theaters) which easily dominated the field again with $34M this weekend. The domestic cume should reach a huge $170M through Sunday. But the big story – or should I say, the sad story – is Sony Pictures/Columbia’s After Earth (3,401 theaters) starring Will Smith and his son and directed by the now unwatchable M Night Shyamalan. Big online ticketseller Fandango first spotted the pic’s underperformance when After Earth ticket sales began lagging Lionsgate/Summit Entertainment’s Now You See Me (2,925 theaters) on Thursday for shows beginning at 9 Pm. The magic-themed heist thriller amazingly overtook After Earth on Friday and stayed #2 all weekend, debuting with $27.5M for the weekend. That overperforms the $20M which the studio was predicting. This pic is breaking the so-called ‘movies about magic’ curse. (But it’s really a caper flick…) The...

This exhausting film harps on the magician’s ultimate trick, misdirection. That word describes the very nature of Now You See Me, which purports to tell a clever story when all it’s doing is whirling in an endless spiral. (That spinning is literal as well as figurative: I actually felt woozy as a result of the camera’s endless swooping and swirling.) So what is it about? That’s hard to say; the three credited screenwriters might have differing views on the subject. I don’t even know if Ed Solomon, Boaz Yakin and Edward Ricourt worked together on this patchwork script. As the movie opens, we meet street magician Jesse Eisenberg, shady mentalist Woody Harrelson, daring stage...

The cinematic taste of filmmakers and actors indicates a lot about the work they may do, but even more intriguing are the movies they loved as kids or watch with their own kids now. Three of the primary players of Now You See Me share their movie Picks for kids.
Mark Ruffalo, who stars in the movie as the frustrated FBI agent, says he loves The Iron Giant. "I think its got a great message to it. My kids never get tired of it."
Director Louis Leterrier was drawn to the story of a different outsider. "When I was a kid, my favorite movie was E.T. That was the most amazing kid's movie. It really changed my life." He also added that Now You See Me, although a bit intense, is a great movie for ages 8 to 88.

Summit's thriller "Now You See Me" follows a group of magicians who call themselves the Four Horsemen (Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher and Dave Franco) as they use varying techniques to pull off elaborate heists. Mark Ruffalo co-stars as the FBI agent hot on their trail, while Melanie Laurent plays an Interpol agent who lends him a helping hand. The cast also includes Morgan Freeman as a magic debunker, as well as Michael Caine as the group's benefactor. Also read: 'Now You See Me': Were the Critics Enchated? Edward Ricourt ("Year 12")...

“Some things are better left unexplained,” a character intones at one point in Now You See Me, a wise lesson that the film’s trio of screenwriters should’ve taken to heart. This heist film, in which a quartet of magicians are highly intelligent thieves (or are they?), becomes more nonsensical and inexplicable the more we learn about how these tricksters have robbed banks (or have they?) and sent federal agents on various wild-goose chases (or were…well, you get the idea). Before we find out the answers to a number of pressing mysteries in the film, that knowledge is all we crave. Once Now You See Me reveals all, we’re left questioning the shreds of logic this film adheres to, having been swindled out of an enjoyable moviegoing experience.

Come to think of it, Hollywood films and magic shows have something in common: You pay your money, and you want to believe. Even if it's exceedingly hard to do.
At the start of "Now You See Me," a magic-themed heist movie with a high-powered cast including Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Mark Ruffalo, Jesse Eisenberg and Woody Harrelson, you really want to believe. The idea is fresh, the introductory scenes enticing.
Plus, the actual magic performances that anchor the film, directed by Louis Leterrier, are fun – and for a while you almost forget that you're merely watching other people watch a magic show.
But then the dialogue turns formulaic, the plot gets increasingly hard to follow – even a film about magic needs an underlying logic – and character development seems to come to an utter halt, with interesting possibilities left unexplored.
It all builds up to a dramatic reveal at the end,...

I wasn't expecting much from Now You See Me. I read the synopsis and expected a magician's version of the Robin Hood tale and in some ways I was right and other ways not so much. Where I hit the nail on the head was in the expectation department. This isn't a great movie, but a serviceable one that traffics largely in sleight of hand entertainment and "how'd they do that?" more than anything else. Together with the "How?" also comes the "Why?" and by the end I'd say the journey is enjoyable enough to warrant a last minute matinee or home viewing. Directed by Louis Leterrier (The Transporter, The Incredible Hulk), the film centers on the teaming of four solo act magicians by a mysterious benefactor to carry off a three-act series of heists. The team consists of magician J. Daniel Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg), illusionist Henley Reeves (Isla Fisher...

Louis Leterrier’s magician-based blockbuster thriller Now You See Me will be hitting theatres in the Us next Friday, and I’m incredibly excited about its arrival.
The film boasts one of the year’s best casts, and all that we’ve seen so far suggests that it’s going to be of the year’s best movies as well.
Summit recently released the opening four minutes, which should serve as more than enough to whet your appetites for more. And following on nicely from that comes a great new TV spot, not only giving us a look at Morgan Freeman’s character, the so-called Debunker, but also the explosive action and magic sequences we can look forward to seeing soon.

Four talented magicians mesmerize an international audience with a series of bold and original heists, all the while pursuing a hidden agenda that has the FBI and Interpol scrambling to anticipate their next move in Now You See Me, a visually spectacular blend of astonishing illusions and exhilarating action from director Louis Leterrier (Clash of the Titans).
The Four Horsemen, a magic super‐group led by the charismatic J.Daniel Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg), perform a pair of hightech, high‐profile magic shows, first amazing audiences by remotely robbing a Paris bank while in Las Vegas, and then exposing a white‐collar criminal and funneling his millions into the audience members’ bank accounts, baffling the authorities with their intricately planned capers.
FBI Special Agent Dylan Rhodes (Mark Ruffalo) is determined to make the magicians pay for their crimes—and to stop them before they pull off what promises to be an even more audacious heist.

I love Mark Ruffalo! The actor is sweet and down-to-earth in real life! We all know him, of course, as Dr. Bruce Banner aka The Hulk in the mega-successful .Marvel.s The Avengers.. But we love him in smaller films like .The Kids are All Right. and .Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.. In the new movie .Now You See Me. opening May 31st, the actor stars as Dylan Hobbs, the detective out to get our Four Horsemen played by Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, Jesse Eisenberg, and Dave Franco.

*** His character.s aspirations
*** The antagonists and the protagonists
*** It.s like .The Avengers. with magicians
*** How has his life changed since .The Avengers?.

It seems inevitable that some part of Louis Leterrier.s upcoming magician.s heist flick Now You See Me is going to implode, if not all of it. But until I actually see it, nothing is going to destroy the unabashed childlike glee I have in anticipating this movie. The above clip from Yahoo! Movies further solidifies my wariness for what Leterrier is bringing to this story, with a script written by Ed Solomon (Bill and Ted.s Excellent Adventure), Boaz Yakin (Safe) and newcomer Edward Ricourt. After Now You See It.s silly but strong opening four minutes of the film were released a few days ago, it was easy to see that the entire thing was filmed as if it were a trailer for itself. The above clip takes that to the extreme, showcasing the extended money-dropping stage trick featured heavily in the first trailer. So maybe that...

Now You See Me has long been one of my most anticipated movies of the year, sitting nicely alongside the likes of Iron Man 3, Man of Steel, and Fast and Furious 6 as a different blend of summer blockbuster.
Led by an all-star cast, we’ve seen nothing but good things from the movie so far, with the latest trailer continuing to suggest it’s a must-see affair. And with its Us release date on the horizon at the end of the month, Summit have released a great first TV spot.

Louis Leterrier’s Now You See Me is deservedly one of the summer’s most anticipated blockbusters, with the magician/heist movie featuring arguably the best cast of the year.

If the new trailer for "Now You See Me" is any indication, it looks like this film will be a ton of fun for fans of bank heists, magic tricks, and sticking it to The Man. Here, Jesse Eisenberg stars as the leader of The Four Horsemen, a group of flashy magicians whose tricks go far beyond pulling a quarter out from behind your ear. Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, and Isla Fisher co-star as his fellow Horsemen, and together they're hoping to pull off the biggest burglary ever. What could be bigger than making it rain stolen money on their giant audience after teleporting a volunteer to rob a bank as part of a show? That's what FBI Agent Dylan Hobbs (Mark Ruffalo) and Interpol's Alma Vargas (Melanie Laurent) hope to find out. If your suspects can escape from anything and have already stolen a cool $140 million from one Arthur Tressler,...

"For our final trick we are going to rob a bank!"
