From rogue androids to emotional AI, these sci-fi movies dive into the future of artificial intelligence.
I haven’t seen “Companion” yet, but it’s been on my list for a few months. It’s a sci-fi horror-thriller about an AI robot named Iris (Sophie Thatcher), who was built to be the perfect companion (in more ways than one…) until she starts questioning everything about her existence. The movie dives into themes of control, identity, and what it really means to be human. With AI being such a hot topic these days, it got me thinking about some of the best sci-fi movies featuring AI-powered robots - so here are seven of my favorites you can stream right now.

Emma Stone, standing 5 feet 6 inches (167.6 cm), is slightly taller than the average American woman but still shorter than her 6′2″ (1.88 m) husband, David McCary. While she now confidently rocks designer heels on the red carpet, her relationship with footwear wasn’t always so effortless.
Reflecting on an early fashion misstep, she once recalled, “On the first day of middle school, I wore high-heeled shoes that you weren’t allowed to wear. I remember being so embarrassed because in every class I went to they kept pointing out that I couldn’t wear these shoes. I wanted to call my mom and have her bring me new shoes!”

In the promotional tour for the UK release of “Ex-Machina” in January of 2015, writer-director Alex Garland lamented the relative failure of “Sunshine,” “Never Let Me Go” and “Dredd” by commenting that his films miss some mainstream sensibility’ and ‘… just don’t break out’. It’s interesting to look back on that statement now following the recent box office success of “Civil War.” Has Garland’s sensibility changed? Or has the cinematic dial shifted to a place in which his films have now become more conscionable to the masses? To answer this question, we must go back to Garland’s childhood…

French filmmaker Fleur Fortuné has made an impressive, if flawed, feature debut whose somewhat troubled storyline is salvaged by three outstanding central performances. The Assessment opens with a young girl swimming a little too far out in the ocean, her distant, blurry mother calling her to shore. In a neat segue, when the girl comes up for air, she is now an adult. Mia (Elizabeth Olsen), still wearing the same style costume and still swimming a little too far from shore, is one half of a handsome and accomplished couple alongside Aaryan (Himesh Patel). They live in a gorgeous home and seem to want for nothing. Their clothes are all silks, linens and natural cotton, while their accessories and household furnishings are top of the range and in excellent taste. But when it’s revealed that the film is set in the near future in an arid land where food and resources are scarce,...

Exclusive: Justin Chon, Bobby Hundreds and Garrett Basch are developing the half-hour series Burnfield based on Hundreds and Chon’s experience in the streetwear scene, preemptively bought by FX, sources tell Deadline.
Hundreds (née Kim) co-founded the streetwear brand The Hundreds alongside Bobby Hundreds (née Shenassafar) more than two decades ago. According to its official website, the company’s apparel is reminiscent of ‘90s workwear and Californian subculture tribes. Bobby Hundreds noted on the company’s blog in 2016, that he found inspiration in the early years from “an enclave of renegade graphic designers coming out of San Diego, Hawaii, and Hong Kong” because they were “weird with placements, neon prints, and bold statements.”
Chon owned and operated a chain of streetwear multi-stores called The Attic in Southern California for 10 years.
Chon and Hundreds will co-create and co-showrun the series.

Politics and the apocalypse collide in Rumours – a horror satire that threatens to steal Megalopolis’ crown as 2024’s most eccentric movie.
When Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis came out earlier this year, opinions were somewhat divided as to whether it was a grand folly, a visionary masterpiece, a piece of demented high camp, or a mixture of all of these.
What most could agree on was that there was nothing else quite like it in 2024’s line-up of movies, whether it was in its unnatural dialogue and bizarre character names (Aubrey Plaza as financial TV reporter Wow Platinum) or its incredibly uneven visuals, which veered from the captivatingly imaginative to the embarrassingly kitsch.
For better or worse, Coppola had managed to finally achieve his goal of creating a vision of the USA as a late Roman empire in danger of tipping over into facism. Which, as 2024 nears its end, now...

Action has a wide range of themes, from thrilling heist flicks to cop thrillers to Western backdrops. Now, Netflix has produced some of the big-budget action movies, but what’s unfortunate is that it has only promoted the worst ones. Amazon's highly anticipated Tomb Raider TV series is bringing the beloved video game franchise to the small screen. Originally released in 1996 for the Sega Saturn and PlayStation, the series follows the daring archaeologist Lara Croft as she embarks on perilous quests to discover lost artifacts. With numerous sequels and a dedicated fanbase, Lara Croft has long cemented her status as a gaming icon. The recent cast announcement for Amazon's Tomb Raider makes the upcoming show all the more exciting.
However, to be successful, the Tomb Raider show needs to distance itself from the underwhelming, too-serious adaptation of the reboot video game. Instead, the involvement of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who was "obsessed with and grew up playing Lara Croft/Tomb Raider" (via The Guardian) can bring the full potential of the legacy character to life. Waller-Bridge and Turner could save the Tomb Raider franchise, if the creative pairing strikes the perfect balance between drama,...

What could be stranger than the hollow pomp of neoliberal politics in the face of Armageddon? While crafting this cheerfully bonkers satire, Canadian co-directors Guy Maddin and Evan and Galen Johnson became fascinated by real footage of G7 leaders coming across a puddle and awkwardly negotiating walking around it. This miniature farce didn’t exactly offer much hope for the future of humanity.

The long-standing debate about what separates a lead from a supporting performance has resurfaced this awards season. Case in point: Netflix’s high-profile contender “Emilia Pérez.” The Spanish-language musical, directed by acclaimed French auteur Jacques Audiard, has already garnered enthusiastic reviews and is poised to be a significant player across multiple Oscar categories. But the studio’s decision to campaign Karla Sofía Gascón as best actress while positioning her co-star Zoe Saldaña as a supporting actress has sparked a heated discussion.
Saldaña’s role as Rita, a lawyer who aids the drug cartel boss Manitas in faking her death, undergoing gender-affirming surgery, and emerging as “Emilia Pérez,” propels the film’s narrative. Her extensive screen time supports this argument.
According to Matthew Stewart of Screen Time Central, Saldaña’s performance clocks in at 57 minutes and 50 seconds, representing 43.69% of the film’s runtime. It’s also slightly more than Gascón’s 52 minutes and 21 seconds (39.54%) on film.

The Tomb Raider franchise got a major lift from a major casting update for the upcoming TV adaptation. It has been reported that Game of Thrones and X-Men alum Sophie Turner is set to star as Lara Croft. The series, led by Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge, will look to turn the tide for the franchise. With Turner now set to be part of Waller-Bridge's reboot, this might be the perfect duo to break Lara Croft into the live-action sphere properly.
The Amazon Tomb Raider series will look to change the fortunes of the iconic video game character. There have been multiple attempts to adapt the legendary video game character into live-action through the years, but none have garnered the proper appreciation Lara Croft deserves. Angelina Jolie's movies from the early 2000s had some financial success but were critically panned, while Alicia Vikander's 2018 movie received mixed reviews and bombed at the box office.

Michael Fassbender is a very popular actor known for his roles in major franchises, but he is especially loved by fans for playing Erik Lehnsherr, also known as Magneto, in the X-Men films.
While Sir Ian McKellen’s portrayal of Magneto is iconic and unforgettable, fans really enjoyed Fassbender’s chemistry with James McAvoy. He is widely remembered as an excellent version of the character.
With the X-Men about to be rebooted for the MCU, the studio will likely be casting a new team, and Magneto will likely be part of it. The success of Deadpool and Wolverine played a big role in bringing attention to mutants again, along with the hit animated show X-Men ’97 this summer.
Collider spoke with Michael Fassbender about possibly returning to his iconic role. He said he had a “great run” as Magneto in four movies but hasn’t ruled out coming back. Fassbender...

Michael Fassbender is one of the most popular actors currently and he has been part of some truly big franchises, but for our readers, he is most popular due to his portrayal of Erik Lehnsherr aka Magneto in the ‘X-Men’ film franchise.
Sir Ian McKellen’s portrayal of the role is legendary and irreplaceable, however, fans loved Fassbender’s chemistry with James McAvoy and he is generally remembered as an excellent version of the character.
Considering that X-Men are about to be rebooted for the MCU, the studio will likely be looking for a new cast, and there’s no doubt that Magneto will soon join the cinematic universe.
The success of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ was vital in this newly-found interest for mutants on the big screen, as was the animated show ‘X-Men ’97’ which was a huge hit for the studio this summer.

Amazon's Tomb Raider series may have potentially found its Lara Croft in Sophie Turner, which will be an exciting endeavor for the actor since she didn't get to partake in a lot of the action in Game of Thrones. First appearing in the iconic 1996 video game Tomb Raider, Lara Croft has since become an iconic character, who has previously been portrayed by Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander on the big screen. Now, Amazon is making a Tomb Raider adaptation for the small screen, and is teaming up with Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge for the series.
While Sophie Turner has not been officially cast in the Tomb Raider series for Amazon Prime yet, she is in negotiations to star as the tomb raider herself, Lara Croft. Turner is most well-known for her roles of Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones and Jean Grey/Phoenix in two of Fox's X-Men films. While...

Amazon has announced an upcoming Tomb Raider TV series, and the video game adaptation is getting more and more exciting with each new update. Debuting back in 1996 on the Sega Saturn and Playstation, the Tomb Raider video game series follows archaeologist Lara Croft as she uses her expertise to discover lost artifacts and explore dangerous lost tombs around the globe. The popular video game series spawned a wealth of sequels, and Croft herself has become an icon among video game mascots.
It didn't take long before Tomb Raider made the jump to other forms of media, and a feature film was produced in 2001 starring Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft. A successful sequel followed in 2003, but Jolie's departure from the role put the big-screen franchise on ice for over a decade. Finally, in 2018, Tomb Raider premiered as a reboot of the series and swapped Jolie for Alicia Vikander. A planned...
