While there’s been plenty of criticism leveled at Best Picture nominee “Emilia Pérez,” things nearly reached a breaking point on Wednesday. Lead Karla Sofía Gascón, the first transgender performer to be nominated for Best Actress or any acting Oscar, gave an interview to a Brazilian journalist criticizing the blowback she has gotten online from supporters of her fellow nominee Fernanda Torres, which resulted in claims that she violated the Academy’s campaign guidelines.
Gascón told Folha de S. Paulo of the Brazilian star of fellow Best International Feature and Best Picture nominee “I’m Still Here” (per Variety’s translation), “What I don’t like are social media teams — people who work with these people — trying to diminish our work, like me and my movie, because that doesn’t lead anywhere. You don’t need to tear down someone’s work to highlight another’s. I have never, at any point,...

Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón has clarified her comments about fellow Best Actress nominee Fernanda Torres after an interview Gascón had done on Jan. 21 was published online this week.
“I am an enormous fan of Fernanda Torres, and it has been wonderful getting to know her over the past few months,” Gascón said in a statement obtained by Gold Derby. “In my recent comments, I was referencing the toxicity and violent hate speech on social media that I sadly continue to experience. Fernanda has been a wonderful ally, and no one directly associated with her has been anything but supportive and hugely generous.”
In the interview with the Brazilian newspaper Folha de S. Paolo, conducted before Gascón received her historic Oscar nomination as the first openly trans woman nominated for Best Actress, the Emilia Pérez star spoke highly of Torres’s performance in I’m Still Here. However, she criticized...

Karla Sofía Gascón, star of the Oscar-nominated film “Emilia Pérez,” has accused the social media team of fellow best actress nominee Fernanda Torres of attempting to undermine her work.
In a Jan. 21 video interview with Folha de S. Paulo, a Brazilian daily newspaper, published Tuesday, Gascón praised Torres, the star of the Brazilian drama “I’m Still Here.” Torres is also competing for best actress at the upcoming Academy Awards, while “I’m Still Here” also landed nods in the best picture and best international feature categories.
In the edited clip, Gascón, speaking in Spanish, criticizes online campaigns, stating, “What I don’t like are social media teams — people who work with these people — trying to diminish our work, like me and my movie, because that doesn’t lead anywhere. For the first time in 47 years, all five Best Actress Oscar nominees hail from Best Picture nominees.
The Best Actress lineup was the top five in the odds: Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez), Mikey Madison (Anora), Demi Moore (The Substance), and Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here). Four of those films were widely predicted to score Best Picture nominations except for I’m Still Here, which was in 13th place in the odds; but in the biggest surprise of the day, the Brazilian feature made the cut on Thursday. The other Best Picture nominees are The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, and Nickel Boys.
The last time the Best Actress and Best Picture lineups aligned was during the 1977-78 season when Diane Keaton (Annie Hall) won Best Actress over Jane Fonda (Julia), Marsha Mason (The Goodbye Girl), and The Turning Point stars Anne Bancroft and Shirley MacLaine.

Fernanda Torres made history on Thursday morning as only the second Brazilian to receive a Best Actress nomination at the Oscars. The I’m Still Here star follows in the footsteps of her mother, Fernanda Montenegro, who was the first to do it in 1999 for Central Station. Walter Salles directed both films.
In I’m Still Here, Torres plays Eunice Paiva, a mother and activist who copes with the forced disappearance of her husband, the dissident politician Rubens Paiva, during Brazil’s military dictatorship. Adapted from Marcelo Rubens Paiva‘s memoir, I’m Still Here earned an additional Oscar bid for Best International Feature.
In January, Torres stunned pundits by winning the Golden Globe Award for Best Drama Actress, solidifying her status as a serious contender for the Oscars. Montenegro’s portrayal of the older version of Torres’ character in the film adds a sentimental layer to this achievement.

Update: Just heard that Ariana Grande has stayed in London to record this week’s Graham Norton TV show Thursday evening.
Wicked stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande will be in the skies, defying gravity, when Oscar nominations are announced Thursday morning.
Both depart from London in the morning, UK time.
Erivo, who plays Elphaba in the hit Universal musical movie, says she’ll be en route from London to Park City, where the Sundance Film Festival will honor her with the Visionary Award at its annual gala fundraiser Friday evening. Grande, who plays Glinda, will be headed to Los Angeles after recording the Graham Norton show .
Both were remarkably Zen on Wednesday in London about not being on the ground to hear nominations, which are being revealed Thursday at 5.45 a.m. Pt. They were more into meeting and mingling with students at the National Youth Theatre on the Holloway Road.

Birdman not only has an impressive cast but also an impressive production, as it appears to have been filmed in one continuous shot. In 2014, the dark comedy-drama Birdman took the audience by surprise with its story, cast, and visual style. Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, Birdman counts on the talents of Michael Keaton, Emma Stone, Edward Norton, Andrea Riseborough, and many others. Birdman was a critical and commercial success, as well as a hit during the awards season, taking the Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Cinematography.
Birdman tells the story of Riggan Thomson (Keaton), an actor best known for playing a superhero named Birdman in the late 1980s/early 1990s. However, Thomson’s career has faded through the years, and he is looking to revive his career by writing, directing, and starring in a Broadway play. Throughout Birdman, Thomson is tormented by the...

Following several award nominations for star Kate Winslet, many people are looking for where to watch the Lee movie on streaming platforms. Winslet portrays the titular Lee Miller in the biographical story of Vogue magazine's war correspondent, formerly a fashion model, during World War II, where she captures the harsh realities of war through the lens of her camera. Joining Winslet in Lee's cast are Alexander Skarsgård as Roland Penrose, Andy Samberg as David E. Scherman, Andrea Riseborough as Audrey Withers, and Josh O'Connor as Antony Penrose, among many others.
Lee was released in theaters in September 2024. While the movie received a somewhat mixed response from critics, Winslet was praised for her work, earning a Golden Globe nomination for her performance. That acclaim has likely bolstered interest in the movie, with audiences looking for options for watching it. With Lee now available for home viewing, there are some easy options...

The glut of movies released in time to be in the running for award season means one thing: Every small theater in every studio, guild, hotel, and club around Los Angeles and New York (and sometimes London) is likely to be booked solid with screenings for potential voters (or members of the press). But with so many screenings every week, how does any strategist get their clients’ films to stand out?
Send in the celebrities!
In an increasingly common move, A-listers are turning out to host, moderate, and otherwise sponsor key award season screenings. Whether it’s Christopher Nolan stepping up to help out Ridley Scott with Gladiator II, Jane Fonda backing Kate Winslet with Lee, or Guillermo del Toro backing … well, it seems like everyone else, celebs who have no stake in a film’s current award success are routinely turning up on invitations to these events.

Controversies and speculations have always been a part of the entertainment industry and they always will be. While sometimes the claims being made on the Internet may make sense, other times it simply seems like people are reading too much into nothing. As for Cate Blanchett and Michelle Yeoh allegedly drifting apart, you decide which category this controversy falls in.

It seemed like the two were good friends, always hyping the other up. However, when Michelle Yeoh posted her unfiltered thoughts on Academy Awards back in 2023, netizens believed that the actress was coming for her so-called friend, Cate Blanchett. It has been a while since the 2023 Oscars have come and gone but it looks like some people have not forgotten the whole debacle.

The start of the new year means it’s time to get ready for Oscar voting. Members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences have less than a week to catch up on 2024’s best movies before voting for the 2025 Oscars officially begins. How does Oscar voting work? Ahead, everything to know about the Academy’s rules and regulations on picking Oscar nominees and winners.
What are the Oscars?
A great place to start. The Oscars are the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences annual awards ceremony. The first Oscars ceremony was held in 1929. Back then it was just called the Academy Awards. The Academy didn’t start using Oscars officially until 1939.
Why is the Academy Award called an Oscar?
As they said in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, when legend becomes fact, print the legend. While it’s not exactly known how the Academy Awards became known as the Oscars,...

In making the film Lee, about World War II correspondent Lee Miller, Kate Winslet chose to champion a woman who simply refused to become what society dictated. Against all odds, shucking off her reputation as a fashion model, at a time when women were not allowed to work with the British Army, Miller determinedly made her way into a career as a war correspondent, venturing into dangerous territory alongside troops, capturing Nazi atrocities. However, the extent of her work was largely undiscovered until, upon her death, her son Antony Penrose stumbled on her archives in the family attic. For Winslet, who would produce and star as Miller, this was a story of an unsung hero; a woman who was so much more than the oft-used description ‘muse’ to the artist Man Ray. So strongly did Winslet feel that at times during production, she dug into her own pockets to keep it going.

As the town starts to shut down for Christmas break next week, fear not: The Oscar season remains in full force as campaigners know the next two weeks leading up to the start of nomination voting is crunch time, the key period when voters will have more time to watch those screeners on the Academy’s digital screening room site.
Despite months of print ads, billboard, TV ads, email blasts, Q&As, receptions, precursor awards from critics groups, Golden Globes and Critics Choice nominations, film festival tributes announced, and whatever else you can think of, the only thing that matters, the only thing is getting those voters to actually see these movies they keep hearing are “contenders” (and that includes Deadline’s own in-person Contenders events in London and Los Angeles as well as virtually for international and documentary films...

They say this town is ruled by fear. They say it’s all gloom these days when not outright doom. They say Hollywood just isn’t what it used to be. Not warm, not wild, not fun.
They may be right. But they obviously aren’t spending time in proximity to Colleen Camp, the if-you-know-you-know fairy godmother of the film business. A veteran character actress turned social networker extraordinaire turned indie producer, she’s close friends with seemingly every bold-faced name in the industry — from Jerry Bruckheimer to Da’Vine Joy Randolph (who name-checked her in her Oscar acceptance speech this year) — and who has in recent years built a reputation as one of Hollywood’s most influential awards-season players. Camp’s intimate, no-press-allowed screenings, high-powered parties, star-studded dinners and assorted taste-making receptions have already altered the trajectories of scores of Oscar campaigns.

Since bursting on the scene in 1998 as a scruffier and scrappier distant cousin to the BAFTAs, the British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs) have been an early bellwether for future talent in front of and behind the camera. Giving a very early shout out to some of the biggest stars working today is the BIFAs breakthrough performance award (formerly the most promising newcomer award).
Jamie Bell and Ben Whishaw were recipients more than 20 years ago, while other winners have included Dev Patel, Naomi Ackie and Jessie Buckley. As for Emily Blunt, John Boyega, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mia Goth, Andrea Riseborough, Will Poulter, George MacKay, Jodie Whittaker and Cosmo Jarvis, they’re among a formidable lineup of names who only managed a nomination.
So it’s only natural that this year’s crop of nominees are perhaps a little excited about what lies ahead. Speaking to Variety ahead of the awards ceremony on Dec.

Is “Wicked’s” color grading that bad? Will Kate Winslet‘s friendly endorsements amount to anything? Gold Derby editors and experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to answer your burning questions of the week.
“Wicked’s” desaturated look, especially compared to the Technicolor pop of “The Wizard of Oz,” has been a point of grievance since the first images dropped. And the discourse has not subsided since the movie’s been seen (and Jon M. Chu‘s viral explanation of it also hasn’t exactly helped). But maybe there’s a more technical reason why “Wicked” look the way it does that doesn’t have to do with color at all — because there are colors in the movie.

Jenn and I have spent the first part of the month dissecting fictionalized adaptations of cults, including Jim Jones and Jonestown (listen), as well as Ti West’s The Sacrament (listen). Then we spent the last few weeks looking at David Koresh and the Branch Davidians (listen), which led to an infamous 51-day stand-off and accompanying siege on Waco.

What frustrates, though, is how their stories wind up being given priority. In our discussion of the first half of the series (listen), Jenn and I hoped that the female “characters” – played by actors like Andrea Riseborough, Julia Garner, and Melissa Benoist – would...

With any true crime story adapted for film or TV, we expect a certain amount of narrative license. Creators may sand off a few here and condense a timeline there to present a coherent and digestible timeline. But what gets lost in this translation? And can we still trust the story we see?
In the newest episode of Bloody FM’s Murder Made Fiction podcast, Joe and Jenn encounter this issue in the 2018 series Waco.
Created by Drew and John Erick Dowdle, this limited series begins with a sympathetic David Koresh (Taylor Kitsch) begging for mercy while a group of soldiers point guns in his face. Early episodes take us back to a burgeoning cult leader building his flock while a government agency struggles to rehabilitate its image.
But what details have been softened in this less-than-faithful retelling and are the story’s real victims getting lost in the shuffle?...

At 86, Ridley Scott is on the cusp of releasing one of the biggest films of his career — “Gladiator II” — and already has at least two additional projects lined up for 2025, a reteam with Paul Mescal and a Bee Gees biopic. With no signs of slowing down.
He’s not the only Hollywood veteran who’s still making movies: Martin Scorsese, who turned 82 this year, made one of the best films of his career with “Killers of the Flower Moon” while Clint Eastwood (94) has what might be his final film, “Juror #2” in theaters now.

Director Panos Cosmatos’ revenge film Mandy quickly gained a devoted cult following when it was released back in 2018 – and one member of the Mandy cult is singer/songwriter Miley Cyrus, who is such a fan of the movie that she not only named one of her dogs after it, but she even contacted Cosmatos about collaborating on a musical remake of the film! If this musical remake had gone forward, Cyrus was wanting to play the character who was first brought to life by Nicolas Cage.
Set in the primal wilderness of an apocalyptic 1983, Mandy has the following synopsis: The quiet life of devoted couple Red (Nicolas Cage) and Mandy (Andrea Riseborough) takes a dark and bizarre turn when a nightmarish cult and their maniacal leader (Linus Roache) seek to possess Mandy… body and soul. A shocking assault on the innocent pair leads to a spiraling, surreal, bloody rampage of all out,...

Count musical artist and pop star Miley Cyrus as a major fan of Panos Cosmatos’ Mandy. So much so that she revealed in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar that she wanted to remake the movie as a musical and star as Nicolas Cage’s character.
The artist considers the film one of her all-time favorites, so much so that she shared that she also named her dog after the title character.
Nicolas Cage played Red Miller in Mandy. In the film, “Pacific Northwest. 1983 Ad. Outsiders Red Miller and Mandy Bloom lead a loving and peaceful existence. When their pine-scented haven is savagely destroyed by a cult led by the sadistic Jeremiah Sand, Red is catapulted into a phantasmagoric journey filled with bloody vengeance and laced with fire.”

Danielle Deadwyler, who was previously snubbed by the Academy Awards for her starring portrayal in Till, said she’s more “relaxed” about being back in the Oscars conversation with The Piano Lesson. And, in fact, de-centering awards season might be the way to go.
“I’m relaxed about it,” the actress told the Los Angeles Times in a recent profile. “I’ve always known what has always been most valuable, which is people, what is going on with people, what is going on with culture. This is so much about the ensemble, about how much we are connecting and the joy that it brought us all to make. It’s not about recognition individually. That should not overwhelm one’s ego or psyche. I feel good and more settled in that understanding. The incessant questioning about awards, awards, awards can be too much.”
Notably, Deadwyler found herself amid a 2022 controversy...

When Sam Riley first got the script for John Cranko, he saw the title page, with its big black print, and thought: ‘An action movie! Finally, someone has seen my action potential!” Then he googled John Cranko. It wasn’t quite what he expected. Not an action here but “a chain-smoking gay choreographer” who transformed the world of ballet.
Riley — known for his breakout performance as Joy Division singer Ian Curtis in Anton Corbijn’s Control (2007) as well as turns alongside Helen Mirren and Andrea Riseborough in Rowan Joffe’s gothic take on Brighton Rock (2010) and across Lilly James in Ben Wheatley’s Rebecca (2020) — had never even been to the ballet. But he asked his wife, Downfall and Rush star Alexandra Maria Lara, to read the script. “She told me, ‘this one you’re gonna do. David and Nathan Zellner’s upcoming alien invasion comedy Alpha Gang adds Channing Tatum, Lea Seydoux, Dave Bautista, Channing Tatum and more.
Channing Tatum, Dave Bautista, Zoë Kravitz, Léa Seydoux, and Riley Keough have joined the already announced Cate Blanchett and Steven Yeun for Alpha Gang, forming one of most fun ensembles we’ve seen in a while. The alien invasion comedy hails from Sasquatch Sunset directors David and Nathan Zellner and will go up for sale at next month’s American Film Market.
With so many brilliant names attached to it, we can’t see the film having too many problems being snapped up and following that, production is set to get underway in the spring. The story sounds really fun: ‘taking place in the 1950s, it follows a group of alien invaders as they pretend to be a leather-clad biker gang. Blanchett, who also produces, will play the gang’s leader.

As of the 2018 Western Damsel, the Zellner Brothers became a directing duo, and in 2020 it was announced that they were going to be making an alien invasion comedy called Alpha Gang, with Andrea Riseborough, Jon Hamm, Nicholas Hoult, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Mackenzie Davis, Sofia Boutella, and Steven Yeun attached to star in the film. But Alpha Gang missed its 2021 production start date and the Zellner Brothers made Sasquatch Sunset instead. Now, Deadline reports that the Zellners are circling back to Alpha Gang, and the impressive cast they originally had lined up has been replaced by a different impressive bunch of actors: Cate Blanchett (Disclaimer), Channing Tatum (Deadpool & Wolverine), Dave Bautista (Knock at the Cabin), Zoë Kravitz (The...

The lingering effect of a psychological thriller can be haunting when a script dissolves the sense of reality and manipulates viewers with its psychological narratives. Fear and anxiety drive psychological tension throughout the film as the principal characters’ distorted perceptions and fractured relationships unravel. Unlike traditional horror, the thrill in a psychological thriller is more internalized, making it a particularly haunting experience.
The psychological construct of narrative results from a unique historical shift inward – toward the secrets of the human mind. The human evolution from superstitions to science blurred the mysterious line between reality and imagination. That acts like a brain tease and makes you question almost everything around you. Hulu has a great assorted collection of such mind-bending, genre-jumping films with psychological narratives that will undoubtedly make your brain restless. I am trying to pick ten that worked for me and are highly underseen. Let me know your thoughts.

The Best Actress Oscar race is looking more and more crowded as we get closer to the 2025 awards season, with numerous significant contenders in the running for those five slots. But if there’s one performance that’s surely going to make it in, it’s Saoirse Ronan in “The Outrun,” directed by Nora Fingscheidt. Why? Here are the Top 5 reasons …
1. Previous Oscar nominee.
At only 30 years old, Ronan has already received four Oscar nominations, and thus an acclaimed dramatic performance in her latest film will put her on the radar for many academy members. Her first nomination arrived in the Best Supporting Actress category for “Atonement” (2007) and then she was nominated in Best Actress for “Brooklyn” (2015), “Lady Bird” (2017), and “Little Women” (2019). Receiving as many Oscar noms as she has in such a short period of time shows that the academy is inclined to consider any new Ronan performance, and...

Sandra Bullock has been one of the most famous Hollywood actresses since she caught everyone’s attention with Speed. Her successes also made her the world’s highest-paid actress in 2010 and 2014 besides an Oscar win in 2009. Reportedly, the actress will now be one of the key players in snatching away Angelina Jolie’s potential Academy Award in 2025.

Lee Miller, a photographer whose images of World War II were shown in Vogue, worked very closely with David Scherman and Audrey Withers. If the name Lee Miller sounds familiar, it may be because you’re familiar with the history of war journalism, or it could be because she’s discussed throughout Alex Garland’s Civil War as one of the characters’ war journalism idols. While it’s nice to see one of the most talented war photographers in history get her roses, the biopic Lee offers little outside of strong performances and interesting imagery to make it stand out in the tired biopic genre.
Lee Review
The film follows the story of Lee Miller, from her days as a fashion model to becoming one of the most iconic war correspondents of all time as a photographer for Vogue magazine during WWII. Although Miller’s life and career were anything but ordinary, this biopic’s writers seem so staunchly committed to following the conventions and formula of the genre that it is somewhat unconvincing.

Indie distributors are fretting about the current marketplace, specifically a glut of films vying for precious theater space and hard-to-snare audiences who, with exceptions of course, still seems mostly willing to come out for big ticket films.
While there are fewer wide studio releases than pre-Covid, theaters are giving them more space, up to 60%-70% of their real estate, a few indies execs said.
Meanwhile, it’s become cheaper to distribute films, which may be why new firms keep popping up to test the waters and in some cases open their movies on hundreds of screens, perhaps without a commensurate marketing effort.
“There is a lot of stuff being released, but nothing is performing,” says one indie distribution executive. Films like Deadpool or Beetlejuice Beetlejuice work, “but everything else is a crapshoot.
“Whether consumers are going to movies other than the big ones has been the question, and still is.

When she first rolled up her sleeves to tell the story of Lee Miller, star and first-time producer Kate Winslet was surprised that a major movie about the pioneering American war correspondent and photographer who covered World War II for British Vogue hadn’t been made before.
“Her life was incredibly rich and full,” Winslet told IndieWire while promoting the film. “She lived many different versions of that life in her gigantic chapter.” But to Winslet, the decade her film trails is when Lee became Lee. “She went to war as a flawed, complicated, and determined middle-aged woman,” Winslet said. “She redefines femininity for me to mean resilience, courage, compassion, and strength.”
More staggering to Winslet, who plays Miller with physical and emotional vigor and sensitivity, was how this significant woman was in danger of being defined through the male gaze in history.
