“I am an enormous fan of Fernanda Torres, and it has been wonderful getting to know her over the past few months,” Gascón said in a statement obtained by Gold Derby. “In my recent comments, I was referencing the toxicity and violent hate speech on social media that I sadly continue to experience. Fernanda has been a wonderful ally, and no one directly associated with her has been anything but supportive and hugely generous.”

The Best Actress lineup was the top five in the odds: Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez), Mikey Madison (Anora), Demi Moore (The Substance), and Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here). Four of those films were widely predicted to score Best Picture nominations except for I’m Still Here, which was in 13th place in the odds; but in the biggest surprise of the day, the Brazilian feature made the cut on Thursday. The other Best Picture nominees are The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, and Nickel Boys.

The last time the Best Actress and Best Picture lineups aligned was during the 1977-78 season when Diane Keaton (Annie Hall) won Best Actress over Jane Fonda (Julia), Marsha Mason (The Goodbye Girl), and The Turning Point stars Anne Bancroft and Shirley MacLaine.

Fernanda Torres made history on Thursday morning as only the second Brazilian to receive a Best Actress nomination at the Oscars. The I’m Still Here star follows in the footsteps of her mother, Fernanda Montenegro, who was the first to do it in 1999 for Central Station. Walter Salles directed both films.

In I’m Still Here, Torres plays Eunice Paiva, a mother and activist who copes with the forced disappearance of her husband, the dissident politician Rubens Paiva, during Brazil’s military dictatorship. Adapted from Marcelo Rubens Paiva‘s memoir, I’m Still Here earned an additional Oscar bid for Best International Feature.

Count musical artist and pop star Miley Cyrus as a major fan of Panos Cosmatos’ Mandy. So much so that she revealed in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar that she wanted to remake the movie as a musical and star as Nicolas Cage’s character.

Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio reunited last night, nearly 3 decades after the release of Titanic!

The 50-year-old actor introduced the 49-year-old actress at a special screening of her film Lee on Tuesday evening (November 19) in Los Angeles. Her co-star Andrea Riseborough was also in attendance.

“Kate, my dear friend. Your work in this film has been nothing short of transformative,” Leo said in his speech introducing Kate. “I continue to be awestruck. I continue to admire your strength, your integrity, your talent, and your passion to every single project that you create. Without further ado, one of the great talents of my generation: the one and only Kate Winslet.”

Kate and Leo obviously co-starred in 1997′s Titanic, and they reunited for 2008’s Revolutionary Road. She recently told a story about what happened on the set of the 2008 film.

Danielle Deadwyler, who was previously snubbed by the Academy Awards for her starring portrayal in Till, said she’s more “relaxed” about being back in the Oscars conversation with The Piano Lesson. And, in fact, de-centering awards season might be the way to go.

“I’m relaxed about it,” the actress told the Los Angeles Times in a recent profile. “I’ve always known what has always been most valuable, which is people, what is going on with people, what is going on with culture. This is so much about the ensemble, about how much we are connecting and the joy that it brought us all to make. It’s not about recognition individually. That should not overwhelm one’s ego or psyche. I feel good and more settled in that understanding. The incessant questioning about awards, awards, awards can be too much.”

David and Nathan Zellner’s upcoming alien invasion comedy Alpha Gang adds Channing Tatum, Lea Seydoux, Dave Bautista, Channing Tatum and more.

Channing Tatum, Dave Bautista, Zoë Kravitz, Léa Seydoux, and Riley Keough have joined the already announced Cate Blanchett and Steven Yeun for Alpha Gang, forming one of most fun ensembles we’ve seen in a while. The alien invasion comedy hails from Sasquatch Sunset directors David and Nathan Zellner and will go up for sale at next month’s American Film Market.

With so many brilliant names attached to it, we can’t see the film having too many problems being snapped up and following that, production is set to get underway in the spring. The story sounds really fun: ‘taking place in the 1950s, it follows a group of alien invaders as they pretend to be a leather-clad biker gang. Blanchett, who also produces, will play the gang’s leader.

Director David Zellner has credits going back to 1997, when he made his feature directorial debut with the comedy Plastic Utopia, working from a screenplay he wrote with his brother, visual effects artist Nathan Zellner. As of the 2018 Western Damsel, the Zellner Brothers became a directing duo, and in 2020 it was announced that they were going to be making an alien invasion comedy called Alpha Gang, with Andrea Riseborough, Jon Hamm, Nicholas Hoult, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Mackenzie Davis, Sofia Boutella, and Steven Yeun attached to star in the film. But Alpha Gang missed its 2021 production start date and the Zellner Brothers made Sasquatch Sunset instead. Exclusive: Vantage Media, the domestic distribution arm of sales firm Vmi Worldwide, is partnering with Chad A. Verdi’s Verdi Productions (Bleed For This) on a fund to acquire and distribute independent films.

Vantage has grown its slate in recent months with titles including What Remains (pictured), the true crime-thriller starring Andrea Riseborough and Stellan Skarsgård, Fernando Trueba’s Haunted Heart starring Matt Dillon, and The Ballad of Davy Crockett, starring William Moseley.

Vantage and Verdi are planning on an annual slate of twelve cast-driven titles and the former will be attending the upcoming American Film Market in Las Vegas to meet with sales agents and filmmakers.

If the name Lee Miller sounds familiar, it may be because you’re familiar with the history of war journalism, or it could be because she’s discussed throughout Alex Garland’s Civil War as one of the characters’ war journalism idols. While it’s nice to see one of the most talented war photographers in history get her roses, the biopic Lee offers little outside of strong performances and interesting imagery to make it stand out in the tired biopic genre.

The film follows the story of Lee Miller, from her days as a fashion model to becoming one of the most iconic war correspondents of all time as a photographer for Vogue magazine during WWII. Although Miller’s life and career were anything but ordinary, this biopic’s writers seem so staunchly committed to following the conventions and formula of the genre that it is somewhat unconvincing.

Indie distributors are fretting about the current marketplace, specifically a glut of films vying for precious theater space and hard-to-snare audiences who, with exceptions of course, still seems mostly willing to come out for big ticket films.

While there are fewer wide studio releases than pre-Covid, theaters are giving them more space, up to 60%-70% of their real estate, a few indies execs said.

Meanwhile, it’s become cheaper to distribute films, which may be why new firms keep popping up to test the waters and in some cases open their movies on hundreds of screens, perhaps without a commensurate marketing effort.

“There is a lot of stuff being released, but nothing is performing,” says one indie distribution executive. Films like Deadpool or Beetlejuice Beetlejuice work, “but everything else is a crapshoot.

“Whether consumers are going to movies other than the big ones has been the question, and still is.

When she first rolled up her sleeves to tell the story of Lee Miller, star and first-time producer Kate Winslet was surprised that a major movie about the pioneering American war correspondent and photographer who covered World War II for British Vogue hadn’t been made before.

“Her life was incredibly rich and full,” Winslet told IndieWire while promoting the film. “She lived many different versions of that life in her gigantic chapter.” But to Winslet, the decade her film trails is when Lee became Lee. “She went to war as a flawed, complicated, and determined middle-aged woman,” Winslet said. “She redefines femininity for me to mean resilience, courage, compassion, and strength.”

More staggering to Winslet, who plays Miller with physical and emotional vigor and sensitivity, was how this significant woman was in danger of being defined through the male gaze in history.
