Exclusive: Nicole Wallace and Gabriel Guevara have set a record for Prime Video after Culpa Tuya (Your Fault) became its biggest international original launch ever.

The Spanish-language YA movie follows a romance between Noah (Wallace) and Nick (Guevara) and bowed on Prime in December. It was tipped to launch strongly after the success of Culpa Mía (My Fault), the first movie in Mercedes Ron’s Culpables trilogy, and has duly delivered.

Culpa Tuya rocketed to the number one spot for Prime Video in more than 170 countries, including Spain, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, France, Germany, Italy and Mexico, data from Amazon and seen by Deadline reveals. It has become the streamer’s top international original launch in any language. The likes of German TV series Maxton Hall – The World Between Us and fellow Spanish pic Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End, both of which came out last year, also put in strong showings.

Amazon Prime Video has ordered a drama series based on the comic book “El Gato Negro” by Richard Dominguez, Variety has learned.

The series, currently titled “El Gato,” will be shot in both English and Spanish. Diego Boneta is attached to star, with Eric Carrasco adapting the comic book for the screen.

Exclusive: Amazon MGM Studios has signed an exclusive overall deal with Gary “Gaz” Alazraki’s Maquina Vega. Under the deal, Alazraki is set to produce, write and direct series for Amazon MGM Studios.

Alazraki is a Mexican director known for directing the movies Father of The Bride (2022; writer and director of Mexico’s record-breaking comedy Nosotros Los Nobles (2013); and co-creator, executive producer and director of Club De Cuervos (2015), Netflix’s first Spanish original series. He heads Maquina Vega and is a board member of Oceana.

Alazraki began his career by directing commercials and the short films: Volver (2005) starring Jaime Camil, Martha Higareda, Tony Dalton and La Hora Cero (2008) produced by Guillermo Arriaga.

In 2011, he began production on Nosotros Los Nobles starring Gonzalo Vega, Luis Gerardo Méndez, Karla Souza and Juan Pablo Gil which he directed/wrote/produced. The film was released by Warner Bros. in 2013 and it became the highest-grossing Mexican movie of all time.

“Exmas” filmmaker Jonah Feingold is directing a new romantic comedy, “31 Candles.”

The independent film will feature the ensemble cast of Jackie Sandler, Dale Moss of “The Bachelorette” fame, comedian Jared Freid, Catherine Cohen (“The Twist…? She’s Gorgeous”), “Abbot Elementary” actor Larry Owens and newcomer Sarah Coffey.

The call sheet also includes Caroline Aaron (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Djouliet Amara (“The Big Door Prize” on Apple TV+), Seth Barrish (“Billion”) and Lori Tan Chinn (“Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens”). It recently wrapped in production in New York City.

“31 Candles” is inspired by Feingold’s life and follows a 30-year-old New Yorker named Leo Kadner (Feingold), who has a Bar Mitzvah after running into his former summer camp crush, Eva Shapiro (Coffey). He must navigate situationships, exes, and relatives to complete his Mitzvah project… and maybe even grow up. The coming-of-age film explores tradition, identity, and how far someone will go for a former love.

Anthony Ramos, Josh Andrés Rivera, and Xolo Maridueña are solid choices to play Evelyn Hugo's first husband, Ernie Diaz, in the upcoming film adaptation. Exclusive: Warner Bros has set Sara Sampaio (At Midnight) for the role of Eve Teschmacher in Superman: Legacy, Deadline can exclusively reveal.

First appearing in Superman and Superman II, the character created by Richard Donner and Mario Puzo is portrayed in the comics as Lex Luthor’s assistant turned love interest and right hand. Sampaio steps into a role previously inhabited by Valerie Perrine in the Christopher Reeve-led Superman flicks, and by Andrea Brooks on The CW’s Supergirl.

Portraying Luthor, as we were first to tell you, is Nicholas Hoult. David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan star as Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane, respectively. Sequels should only be made if specific conditions are met, such as having the original director involved and a well-crafted story to continue the franchise without ruining its legacy. Little Women and Back to the Future deserve sequels, while declining franchises like Transformers need to end. The success of a sequel depends on various factors, including the availability and willingness of the cast and director. Greta Gerwig should write and direct Barbie 2 for it to have a chance at surpassing the original. The sequel would need to meet high expectations and deliver a message about self-love just as profound.

With so many unnecessary sequels and prequels coming out these days, it is a pity that amazing franchises and standalone movies that deserve another installment are still overlooked. While Little Women and Back to the Future are long overdue for sequels because there are more stories to tell, declining franchises like Transformers can't die fast enough.

Exclusive: Gael García Bernal will be honored with the inaugural Premio Vida y Legado (Life and Legacy Award) at the annual Día de Muertos celebration to be held on November 1 at the Hollywood Forever Cemetary in Los Angeles.

Now in its third year, the event is a tribute to Latino culture and the Mexican tradition of honoring family who have passed and bringing together family who are chosen.

“I’m honored to present the inaugural Día de Muertos Award to Gael García Bernal, a true cinematic icon whose brilliant work as both a producer and actor has brought Latino stories to life and given them a space in mainstream culture,” Carlos Eric Lopez, the Mexican-American fine art and celebrity photographer who hosts the yearly dinner, told Deadline in a statement.

Unfortunately, the overall execution — and more importantly, the central relationship — doesn't quite hold up with closer scrutiny. This spin on “Notting Hill” and “Roman Holiday” (the latter is channeled and referenced throughout) shows a silver screen superstar and a hotel employee falling in love and giving their lives the push they need to achieve their dreams.
