Max is ready with an entertainment-packed January next year. The upcoming month will see the return of some of Max’s brilliant original adult animated superhero dark comedy-drama series Harley Quinn, and also a new original medical drama series The Pitt. Just like every month, Max is ready to overload you with great content. So, we’re here to tell you about the 5 new movies and TV shows coming to Max in January 2025.

The Front Room (January 3) Credit – A24

The Front Room is a psychological horror drama film written and directed by Max and Sam Eggers. Based on the 2016 short story of the same name by Susan Hill, the 2024 film follows Belinda, a newly pregnant young woman whose mother-in-law suddenly moves in with them and tries to get control over the unborn child, and now it’s up to Belinda to create boundaries.

DC has an interesting slate of movies and shows coming in 2025 to kick off a new period for the franchise!

2024 was, in many ways, the end of an era for DC Comics. The Dceu, with its tortured history, ended with the year prior with Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom sinking fast, so there weren't any new films from that franchise this year. The CW's Arroweverse also closed out after 12 years with Superman and Lois, while their animated film universe also ended with the Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths trilogy.

It's a new day for DC Comics on TV and film, with James Gunn and Peter Safran crafting a new DC Universe. There have been shifts as The Batman II is now delayed until 2026, and other projects are in the works. Sundance added 57 short films to its impressive 2025 lineup on Monday, including new films starring Dagmara Domińcyzk, J. Smith Cameron, Kenneth Lonergan, and Martin Starr.

“Our program would never be complete without a curation of outstanding short films, and we’re excited to share the 2025 Sundance Film Festival Short Film Program today,” said Kim Yutani, Sundance Film Festival Director of Programming. “These projects are varied in style and substance, but across all categories, they represent the power of short-form storytelling beautifully.”

“Our Short Film Program celebrates fresh styles and unique stories. The short run time encourages innovation,” said Mike Plante, Senior Programmer, Short Film. “Audiences will find much of the next generation of film talent here, with raw, exciting and inspired filmmaking from around the world in each of our eight programs.”

According to the Sundance press release, “The 57 short films selected for the 2025 Sundance Film Festival were chosen from 11,153 submissions.

With the features lineup out of the way last week, the 2025 Sundance Film Festival has revealed the short films headed to Park City and Salt Lake City, Utah, for the event’s 41st edition. Beginning January 23 through February 2, festival attendees can catch 57 short films from 28 countries and territories — including live action, animated, and nonfiction documentary titles. Shorts will also be available online during the festival’s second half along with select feature sections.

The 57 short films selected for the 2025 Sundance Film Festival were chosen from 11,153 submissions. Out of these submissions, 4,909 came from the U.S. and 6,244 were international. The selected films will be eligible for juried awards at the end of the festivals.

In today’s Harley Quinn Season 5 trailer, Harls and Ivy are looking for a fresh start after looking at the declining state of Gotham City. With Gotham being a dumpster fire, the grass must be greener in Metropolis, right? Well, not exactly. Everything is not as it seems when Harley and Ivy discover that the grass isn’t always greener in Superman’s backyard, even if it initially appears that way. Miles Levin’s drama “Under the Lights” received the coveted Polish Film Institute Award at the American Film Festival’s industry event U.S. in Progress, as well as $50,000 cash prize for post-production in Poland.

“It has been an incredibly rewarding and inspiring project to work on. Miles is a force of nature with a clear vision and relentless drive to bring this story to life,” said Natalie Metzger, VP of production and development at Vanishing Angle.

“I’m so honored to have produced it and for it to be part of U.S. in Progress. There’s nothing like this program in America, so we are very grateful it exists. It’s much needed for American indie filmmakers.”

It doesn’t sound like HBO thinks Tim Robinson should leave, after all. In fact, the premium network just ordered a new series from the comedian, titled “The Chair Company.”

The half-hour comedy, which was granted a pilot order in April, follows a man named William Ronald Trosper (Robinson), who finds himself “investigating a far-reaching conspiracy” after an embarrassing incident at work.

Robinson and Zach Kanin, who created “I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson” together, will serve as writers and executive producers for “The Chair Company.” Adam McKay and Todd Schulman also executive produce for HyperObject Industries, with Igor Srubshchik serving as an EP and Andrew DeYoung directing and executive producing the pilot.

HBO has placed a series order for The Chair Company, a comedy series co-created by and starring Tim Robinson of Netflix’s Emmy-winning sketch show I Think You Should Leave. Zach Kanin, a longtime collaborator of Robinson’s on Itysl, Saturday Night Live and Comedy Central’s Detroiters, co-created the show with Robinson; both will write and executive produce.

Adam McKay and Todd Schulman also executive produce via their HyperObject Industries, along with Igor Srubshchik. Andrew DeYoung — who helmed Robinson’s feature film Friendship — directed and executive produced the pilot.

The Chair Company will follow a man named William Ronald Trosper (Robinson) who, after an embarrassing incident at work, finds himself investigating a far-reaching conspiracy.

“With an imprint only Tim and Zach can have on a character, William Ronald Trosper follows in the strong tradition of HBO comedy leads,” said Amy Gravitt, executive vp HBO and Max comedy programming.

HBO has picked up to series The Chair Company, its half-hour comedy pilot starring Tim Robinson who co-wrote it with his writing partner Zach Kanin.

The pickup for The Chair Company, which Robinson and Kanin executive produce with Adam McKay and Todd Schulman, follows the series order earlier this week for HBO’s other 2024 comedy pilot, an untitled ensemble half-hour written, executive produced by and starring Rachel Sennott, making for a 2-for-2 pilot-to-series batting average.

With HBO also recently handing a straight-to-series order to a Bill Lawrence-Matt Tarses comedy starring Steve Carell, this marks the largest contingent of new comedy series at the premium network in years as it has ramped up half-hour development in light of stalwarts Curb Your Enthusiasm and Barry coming to an end and the pending departure of Somebody, Somewhere.

Tim Robinson doesn’t think he should leave TV anytime soon.

The “I Think You Should Leave” star is confirmed to lead upcoming HBO comedy series “The Chair Company,” with Adam McKay and Zach Kanin executive producing.

Robinson writes, stars in, and executive produces the half-hour show, which was picked up by HBO. The official logline reads: “After an embarrassing incident at work, a man named William Ronald Trosper (Robinson) finds himself investigating a far-reaching conspiracy.”

Lake Bell, Sophia Lillis, Will Price, Joseph Tudisco, and Lou Diamond Phillips co-star.

A group of comedians are signing on for the latest Zoom call to benefit Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign, with Ben Stiller, Jason Bateman, Cecily Strong and D.L. Hughley among those signed up to participate.

Katie Rich, a writer and executive producer on both, relishes that the shows’ villainous protagonists allow her and her team to crank up the “naughtiness” a few notches.

“Because they are bad people… the dirtiness and the funness is organic,” said Rich. “We are not forcing it to be an adult comedy, this is really who these people are.”

Tim Robinson and Zach Kanin’s HBO comedy pilot “The Chair Company” has added five new cast members, Variety has learned exclusively.

Lake Bell, Sophia Lillis, Will Price, Joseph Tudisco, and Lou Diamond Phillips will all appear in the pilot. Phillips will be a guest star while the other four will be series regulars. Bell will play Barb Trosper, with Lillis as Natalie Trosper, Price as Seth Trosper, and Tudisco as Mike Santini. Phillips will appear as Jeff Levjman.

As previously announced, Robinson will star in the pilot. The official logline for “The Chair Company” states, “After an embarrassing incident at work a man finds himself investigating a far-reaching conspiracy.”

Bell is repped by UTA, Entertainment 360 and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole. Lillis is repped by CAA, Untitled Entertainment, and Jackoway Austen Tyerman. Price is repped by Buchwald and Brillstein Entertainment Partners. Tudisco is repped by Prestige Management Group.

Laura Brown has teamed with (Red), the organization co-founded by Bono and Bobby Shriver in 2006 to fight AIDS, to form the organization’s new (Red) Creative Council — and she recruited some A-list members to join her.

Brown, founder of Lb Media and former editor-in-chief of InStyle Magazine, will serve as chair of the council, which is comprised of individuals spanning fashion, photography, film, design, journalism and

management, with the goal of supporting (Red) in its mission to ensure the disease is preventable and treatable for all.

The Council will meet twice annually and includes Cynthia Erivo, Murray Bartlett, Connie Britton, Allison Williams, Storm Reid, Lake Bell, Kiernan Shipka, Iman and stylist Karla Welch.

“The (Red) Creative Council; a collection of stellar forces from different disciplines — film to photography, fashion to social media — will help (Red) go bigger, bolder and work towards ending the pandemic altogether,” Brown said in a statement.

What If …? Is returning for a third season, but viewers now know it will be the final season of the Marvel animated series. Disney+ renewed the series for a third season in July 2022, ahead of its second season premiere. A premiere date for the final episodes has not yet been announced.

The anthology series shows an alternative history for Marvel with twists like Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) becoming Captain America and T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) becoming Star Lord. Actors from the Marvel films often lend their talents to voice their animated counterparts. Mother, Couch is the type of movie with a jaw-dropping cast that you keep hoping and praying gets better but never turns that corner. And that’s saying something for a film that mercifully ends around the 90-minute mark. The film has worthy performances, particularly from its star, Ewan McGregor, who does what he can to elevate the material.

However, Mother, Couch is more interested in its existential mood than in what will draw the audience in. The story is not engaging or interesting, and, for that matter, entertaining is the story. That’s the one thing about some first-time directors—they forget their audience.

Mother, Couch is a boiling point of a picture. Written and directed by Niclas Larsson (and based on Jerker Virdborg’s novel Mamma i soffa), this is an edgy story about small discourtesies and how they sometimes build into something big, nasty, and violent. Three half-siblings are forced back together when their mother (Ellen Burstyn) refuses to move from a couch in a big, dilapidated furniture store. The daughter (Taylor Russell) of the store owner appears very unworried by the dilemma. She even invites them to stay the night if it’s helpful.

For a debut feature, Larsson is incredibly confident in his cast and aesthetic. This is essentially a one-location narrative with a handful of sojourns to a beach, a house.
